Thanks! ![]() Better than what I was able to do. This is certainly good enough for me to colorize and put in my 1950 image pack. |

Charlie Snell 1912
Facepack upgrade of Snell, replacing the current image of him as an elderly man. This pictures the young catcher as a member of the 1913 Montgomery Rebels via the April 14, 1913 edition of The Montgomery Advertiser.

RIP John LaRose
Was doing an image search today and found out that John LaRose, who appeared in relief in one game for the Red Sox in 1978, passed away on January 14 of this year. Drafted first by the Yankees, he had an 11 year MiLB career that spanned 1970-1980 in the Red Sox' system, surfacing at the big league level as a September call-up during the infamous Sox Swoon (and brief rebound) of 1978. He was treated harshly by the Tigers in his one appearance on the 20th.
LaRose is one of the toughest image finds of 1978 - a color image of him from the Sox 1979 yearbook (shown here) is all that there is in color, and nothing of him seems to exist in the older red-capped unis they were still wearing in 1978 - if anyone has any leads on a red-hatted photo of LaRose, my 1978 project would be forever indebted to you. A final note - his hat is fitted strangely in this image - looks a few sizes to big, like it's sitting on his hair but not gripping his head. A belated farewell, Mr. LaRose. |

Joe Wright 1895
Facepack upgrade, pictured with the 1891 Appleton, WI team. Note that the Baseball-Reference image does NOT depict Wright. I searched long and hard for this one!

Martin Powell 1881
Not a Facepack upgrade, but this gives a nice uniform option for Powell. He is pictured with the 1883 Detroit Wolverines.

Dick Burns 1883
Miraculously Burns made it through high school with a most unfortunate name. This is the first time I've seen a photo of him in uniform, pictured with the 1883 Detroit Wolverines.

Jim Lewis New York Yankees 1982
Jim Lewis was a tall right-handed pitcher out of Florida who signed with the expansion Mariners as an amateur free agent in 1977. Jim spent three seasons in the Mariners chain as a starting pitcher, posting one decent season and two bad ones. In 1980 the Mariners sent him to the Yankees as part of a multi-player deal which also brought Ruppert Jones to New York. I don't know the names of the manager and pitching coach at the Yankees AAA Columbus farm, but somebody there saw immediately that Lewis was miscast as a starter and that he had potential as a relief pitcher. Lewis worked out of the Clippers' pen for the next three seasons, posting good ERAs in two of those years and pretty good numbers all around. (1980: 3.29 ERA, 10-7, 7 SV, 93 IP, 73 H, 45 BB, 76 K; 1981: 4.98 ERA, 8-7, 13 SV, 150 IP, 147 H, 65 BB, 100 K; 1982: 2.60 ERA, 12-6, 5 SV, 166 IP, 139 H, 64 BB, 107 K.) By '82, Lewis was probably among the Yanks' better minor league pitchers, but they gave him just 2/3 of an inning of big league work that year (54.00 ERA) and left him unprotected over the winter. The Twins drafted Lewis and converted him back to a starting pitcher, which essentially ruined him. He got sips of the saucer in Minnesota and Seattle before quitting, but he was never really effective after leaving the Yankees organization. Major league Images of Jim have been very hard to come by. The only one I'd ever seen until recently was a blurred enlargement of a black and white image from a 1980 or 1981 Yankees yearbook. Now the estimable ebay store kylesportscards has to come to our aid with two good color images of Jim from 1981. Enjoy.

I don't know if you are referring to the most recent post or not, but the routine should be pretty simple. 1. Put cursor on image, click. 2. Select 'view image.' 3. Click again to enlarge image. 4. Select 'save as,' then give any name you want to image and save in any folder you want on your own drive. |

Tom Gettinger 1889
Here's a couple Facepack upgrades for journeyman outfielder Gettinger. First one pictures him with the 1897 Kansas City team while the second pictures him in street clothes with 1895 Indianapolis.
