Sometimes the Remini app can work minor miracles. The source image is almost unusable but I was pleased how the image cleaned up.

Baseball Reference

The site baseball reference has done a lot of updating this year, with the addition of the Negro League statistics being especially exciting. But today I've noticed they may have jumped the shark a bit. Players like Chief Bender, Dummy Hoy and countless others have been changed from how they've been traditionally addressed. Now you have to type "Billy Hoy" or "Charles Bender" to get them to come up in the search engine. I have, up til now, tried to keep the Facepack listings consistent with Baseball Reference in how they address players but I'm undecided if I'll continue to do that.

I noticed this a while ago and asked the chair of the SABR Biographical History Committee for SABR's policy on the B-R change. I'll update when I receive a response.

I received a reply from SABR's Biographical History Chairman, who has not changed the "use name" for historical players and does not take an official position or stance on the baseball-reference decision to rename. I also downloaded the latest Chadwick database feed, updated two days ago, which is similarly unchanged.

At least for the time being, for SABR Pictorial History Committee tracking and photopack(s), I'll continue to keep the historical "use names" that the SABR Biographical History Committee and Chadwick recognize.

Thanks, Scott. I think that's the best tactic to take at this point. I don't want to confuse newer baseball fans with revisionist baseball history.

Concur.

I had hoped the happy little corner of the world that is the shared interest of all on this board might be spared but alas, it seems I was naive.

Ivey Shiver 1931

Off the Pegasus UIN list, here's Shiver pictured with the 1934 Cincinnati Reds. The photo was featured in the April 25, 1934 edition of The Dayton Herald.

Not sure why Shiver had been on the Pegasus UIN list for a Reds uniform, because a photo of him in a Cinci uni had been posted back in 2008. It can be seen as the final photo on the following page in a previous thread:

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...55954&page=293

In other words, don't look for it on page 293 in this thread.

Shiver/Reds had been on the UIN list as "need better", a step up from missing outright. It was listed that way probably because the uniform in the prior image had no visible logos and, according to Dressed to the Nines, was not the style used during his only season with the team.

Al Brazle 1943

The Remini app does a very nice job enhancing color pictures as well. This came from Brazle's 1953 Bowman baseball card.

I've found that as well though I haven't actually tried it on a card image. I thought the moire pattern on those might give it problems. This one looks great though. I used that same image for my 1950 set but this is a vast improvement. May be looking at a lot of "re-do's".

Here's a nice enhancement of Cain's 1953 Bowman card.

Ben H. Taylor 1912

Facepack upgrade to replace the horrendous previous image. This 2 game major leaguer is pictured trying out in spring training for the 1913 Indianapolis team. Image comes from the March 12, 1913 edition of The Indianapolis News.
