Si Pauxtis 1909

Here's Pauxtis pictured with the 1909 Reds. He only made it into 4 games for them that year despite being a highly touted athlete out of college. His picture was printed in the 9/10/1909 edition of The Cincinnati Post.

Ike Samuels 1895 MISSING PLAYER

I was able to locate a photo for Ike Samuels, who played for many teams and under many aliases, in the late 1890s. He was pictured here, alas not very clearly, in the 6/61897 edition of The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette. He was a notoriously poor fielder and his miscue-laden tenure with the 1895 Browns was remembered in St. Louis papers for decades afterwards. All that being said, he was proud of his brief time in the majors and reportedly stopped by a newspaper office in New York in the early 1960s to respond in person to an article about still-living players from the 19th century.

Great find cinemaodyssey. Here's a drawing of Ike from the 8-17-1895 The Kentucky Post.

Thanks, that was extremely helpful. From the two exemplars we have of Samuels now, I think the attached photo that Chickazoola has been trying to identify for several years is without a doubt Samuels.

Wow, this is wonderful. I have spent so much time on Samuels, so to see this one as well on top of CinemaOdyssey's find warms my heart!

PHOTO LOCATED Sam White 1919 Boston Braves

Found another one of my white whales, 1 game catcher Sam White of the 1919 Boston Braves.

He is pictured in the March 29, 1914 Battle Creek Enquirer. White was with the team in the preseason and was cut before he appeared with the club.

Just an observation: The image has him posing as a right handed batter and his stats say he's a left handed batter

1986 Opening Day Rosters

Not an image request - apologies.

I've been using the back issues of The Sporting News from Paper of Record to obtain opening day MLB rosters. They don't seem to have printed them in 1986.

Anyone know of another source for this information? I've begun searching Newspapers.com, but that's gonna be a project....

Thanks!

Leonard 1892

I've spent a lot of timing trying to track the case of Leonard. He was a Brooklyn semipro. My best guess is he was a man named Dr. Francis Ignatius Leonard of Brooklyn, who was a catcher for the Long Island College Hospital and the Utica semipro club in 1890, the Long Island Athletic club in 1891, had baseball connections and went by moniker of "Doc". There is another well-known player named Michael J. Leonard, who was playing in New Jersey at the time and went on to a minor league career, but he appears to have been playing for another club on game day.
I just spent a brief bit of time on Doc Leonard to see what was out there, and I found a date of birth (Aug 27, 1869), but not a date of death. Have you found that information? I also found he was married to a well-known vaudeville actress, who had a tobacco card of her own, but I was not able to find when they separated, nor any photo of the two of them.

Would you be willing to share your info?

I was just looking through my notes and he died on March 3, 1929 in Brooklyn. I've not found an obituary.

I found the newspaper article that showed the box score for this game.

The teams were both full of hall of famers. in the photo you can clearly see Cobb sitting down in the front all the way on the right and George LaChance sitting on the left with the mustache
