Rufus Meadows 1926 UIN Reds
Taken from the 1926 Reds team photo currently up for auction at RMY. Prior to this, I only had a photo from Meadows' 1932 tryout with the Yankees.

Ed Coughlin 1884 Missing Player?
I believe the Facepack entry and Tnfoto's 2010 post announcing the discovery of 1 game major leaguer Ed Coughlin actually depicts Roscoe Coughlin circa 1895 with Springfield. Unless someone has something I don't, Ed Coughlin is likely a missing player.

Even checked out the Baseball Reference - which show Roscoe with almost identical features minus the parting of the hair... new look?

Cinemaodyssey, you may well be right about the Ed Coughlin image. It was originally found by now deceased collector Richard Ulrich in an unspecified issue of Sporting Life. It's possible that Richard mistook Ed Coughlin for Roscoe Coughlin.

Ed Coughlin
I've been trying, without success, to locate a photo of the now-probably missing Ed Coughlin. I was concerned at first that possibly everything known about him was a mystery, after reading David Nemec's blurb on Coughlin in The Rank and File of 19th Century Major League Baseball, where he says that Peter Morris believed his lone MLB game for Buffalo on May 15, 1884 actually belonged to a "Chester, PA amateur." This is backed up by the Buffalo Express' write up of the game, which says Coughlin was from Chester.
However, the Philadelphia Times' account does say Coughlin was an "amateur from Hartford." Also Edward E. Coughlin's 1952 obit does say he played in the National League, though the line about Connie Mack appears to be a bit off. Coughlin apparently played for Buffalo of the NL, Youngstown of the Iron and Oil Association, and Hartford in the Connecticut State League in 1884, while Mack played for Meriden. Mack played for Hartford the next year, but Coughlin doesn't appear anywhere on Baseball-Reference for 1885. Interestingly, the May 15 edition of the Hartford Courant mentions that "Michael O'Neil and Edward Coughlin of this city are to catch and pitch for the Youngstown (Ohio) base ball club this season." While that is true according to his record, its odd that it was published the day of his lone major league game for Buffalo, if these two players are indeed one in the same. |

Regarding Coughlin, I believe the current ID is correct despite some conflicting notes. I've worked with Peter Morris and Bill Carle on this and we concluded that the obit was sufficient enough, along with the Hartford reference in Philadelphia papers.
As for the Chester, PA notes, my take is that it is a red herring. I've spent so much time digging through the Chester papers circa 1880's, and there is no player named Coughlin in the area at the time. The Hartford Coughlin appeared for the local Hillyer Guard military club in 1884, as well as Youngstown and Hartford that year. |

I will also add that Coughlin was briefly on the 1886 Hartford club of the Eastern League alongside Connie Mack. He pitched a two hitter against Springfield on May 17, 1886.

Not sure if you had seen this but I happened upon an Old Judge card while checking another ball player and saw an 1887 card of Roscoe Coughlin... not as good you folks here but tried to downsize for a better look...https://img.deanscards.com/actual/4699913f.jpg

ARTIE DEDE -1916
One-game player Artie Dede is among five members of the NL champion Brooklyn Robins with close-up photos in the current RMY Auction. He played behind the plate and had one at-bat on October 4th, 1916, the penultimate game of the season, when he was 21. Dede was the third catcher to appear in that particular game. He was never in another major league game and appears not to have played in the minor leagues. Edited to add: He was a Brooklyn semi-professional player who was signed by the Robins in May as an emergency catcher and a warmup catcher. He remained on the roster for the rest of the season, but did not appear in a game until October. When the Brooklyn starting catcher injured a finger in the sixth inning on October 4th, the #2 catcher caught the rest of the inning, and then Dede caught the final three innings. He had two passed balls in those innings. Dede returned to semi-pro ball in 1917. Last edited by RUKen; 07-25-2022 at 07:50 PM. |

Facepack upgrade, pictured in the 9/18/1910 edition of the Portland Sunday Telegram. Chickazoola had previously given us a passport photo but this one is much clearer.

CO,
I have been using Tnfoto pictures for a few years. He does a great job but just to try something a little different I am going to use your facepack when I start a new league this week. OOTP is great because of folks like you and Tnfoto. |
