Jerry Kane 1890

Facepack alternative, pictured on the occasion of his death in the 10/25/1948 edition of The Belleville News-Democrat. At the very least, the obituary concludes that this Jerry Kane was the major league player beyond a shadow of a doubt.

George Batten 1912

I'd be grateful if anybody can provide me with the reference for the photo of Batten in the Facepack. I haven't had any luck tracking him down in the newspapers other than a brief mention from his one day appearance in the big leagues.

Sadly, I don't have either source information or a larger version of that photo. I was able to locate mention of George Batten breaking his leg during a game in Cape May, NJ in July 1913, but nothing before or after, other than the aforementioned report of his one-game ML stint...and no photo accompanying the broken leg story.

George Batten notes

So, I've been spending some time on George Batten lately. He has a questionnaire from the Hall of Fame, where he indicates he played for Lynn, MA club in 1911-1912 and Montreal and Utica in 1913. I also found he played for Baltimore in 1913 as well. This is along with his one game for New York and his semi-pro work in Cape May.

I've checked the available Lynn, Utica, Montreal and Baltimore papers that are online, but haven't found a hit yet. But he should be findable and he lived until 1972, so there's gotta be something out there.

Fred Lasher 1963 UIN(ish) Angels

In one of the more quirky UIN finds I can recall, here is Lasher, shown in a 1971 Angels uniform holding a fish. Unfortunately, he is actually pictured while playing for the Salt Lake City Angels. This image was included on his RIP Baseball page, but I haven't found the newspaper it came from.

While the major league Angels used the same uniform style that season, for now I'm keeping him on the UIN list.

The source of the photo you posted, which is also used by Baseball-reference.com, is the book 2000 CUPS OF COFFEE, by Marc Okkonen. Okkonen was under the impression that Batten had been with Montreal of the International League in 1913, although I don't know what uniform that photo shows Batten in. I have Okkonen's photo files that he used for the book. The caption for this photo from its original source (unidentified) said "George Batton," a slightly different spelling from the major leaguer's surname. I checked B-R.com to see if there was another pro ballplayer named George Batton who was not a major leaguer, and there wasn't.

Thanks for that information. I've seen a few boxscores from Montreal that year with Batten featured so I'll keep digging.

I found a note in the Portsmouth Herald of August 9, 1940 (pg. 9) that indicated George Batten was prominent in Athletics at Phillips Exeter in 1910 and 1911. (His name appears as a member of the junior class in a yearbook for Exeter from that time on an Ancestry.com profile.) The article (about his son's death) also notes he joined a major league baseball team as a pitcher. According to the boxscores I saw, he played second base in his only game in the majors?

In July 1913, George Batten, 21 years old, broke his leg while pitching for the Cape May baseball team (Philadelphia Inquirer, July 27, 1913, pg 7). That probably ended his 1913 season. And according to Ancestry.com, he got married in the spring of 1914, and his first son was born in October. Talent or not, that may have ended any chance he had at a professional career in baseball at any level.

That is the entirety of what I could learn about George Batten in a few quick searches. But Exeter may be the place to look for the photo.

I pulled the same ancestry records but on closer inspection found that there were intermingled George Battens in the timeline of ancestry so I didn't trust them. I pulled some of the yearbooks at Exeter (I have an eyearbook account that I sometimes get lucky with) and the Batten there on a relook seemed to be too late for our man. Exeter is a high school today. There were pics too of other teams he was on in the yearbooks I saw ... but no way to match names to faces and I couldn't find his senior picture.

Well, the Exeter listing does say he is from Philly... That has him in the Class of 1913 graduating but other sources say 1915. These days it's a High School but maybe they were a college then?

There is a 1915 yearbook for sale on etsy: https://www.ebay.com/itm/233305999000

I asked if he was in the yearbook being sold and got the following response:

New message from: kathyswindinggarden (2,709RED_STAR Star)
Sorry. Don't see him in the book.

Hello,

In 1915, George B Batten should have been a senior but I'm not sure he graduated or dropped out. Is he shown as a senior (with picture) in the 1915 yearbook that is offered for sale?

No one knows which one he is, just putting out that he's in the photo. It was on information from prewinter up above.

Anyone have Wally Backman on the Mariners in 1993?

Played 10 games with them to retire.

Here is Steve Ontiveros (pitcher) on the Seattle Mariners in 1993. Found a game he was in on YouTube and did a screen grab.

Only time I could find him in a M's uniform (he played in 14 games with them in 93):

If someone has a better Vault pic or something, let me know.

I found a Batten who pitched and played the outfield and infield for a 1908 New Jersey team called Cedar Brook and if it were to be George he would have been 17 at the time. 1st player sitting on the ground from the left.

Team photo from the 8-23-1908 Philadelphia Inquirer. Box score from the Morning Post 5-25-1908
