Washington Senators Offseason Moves
Washington-St. Louis Trade: Hall for Murphy Friday, November 19th, 1909: The players apparently knew they were on the trading block, so it did not surprise one of them when he learned that he had been traded to Washington. "Got my bags packed already," he said, when reached for comment. The Senators will receive 33-year-old left fielder Frank Murphy, while 30-year-old third baseman Bob Hall will go to the St. Louis Cardinals. Lifetime Hall is hitting .248 with 147 hits, 3 home runs, 93 runs scored and 57 RBIs. Washington Fired up over Signing of 1B Hofman Saturday, December 4th, 1909: Solly Hofman and Washington put the finishing touches on a $3,020-a-year deal that will keep the 27-year-old in a Washington uniform for 4 years. Team officials reportedly held their breath at the last moment, since Hofman had second thoughts mulling over other offers. To date Hofman has a .293 career batting average and has totaled 34 home runs. Washington Wins SP Walsh Sweepstakes Wednesday, December 29th, 1909: As speculation mounted into the morning, rumors over a final agreement between Ed Walsh and Washington became a reality, with the star opting for a $48,090 deal over 7 years. Lifetime Walsh has a won-lost record of 107 victories and 103 losses with 814 strikeouts in 1846 innings and a 2.77 ERA.

Cy Young: Most likely 1910 could be Cy's most pivotal year. At 43 years old he is one of the oldest players in the league. A 350-263 record is good ofr #5 on the all time leader board for wins. Cy has a contract through 1913. Chick Robitaille: Bullpen ace. Chick was traded from St Louis Cardinals in exchange for Jesse Tannehill. Chick's record in 1909 was 5-5 with 6 saves. Batting Solly Hofman: Solly was picked up off FA and signed to a 4 year $12,080 contract. Lifetime Hofman is .293 with 34 HRs and 575 RBIs. Nap Lajoie: Nap is in his last year of his 7 year contract. Last season Lajoie went .319, 98 RBIs. Roger Bresnahan: Roger's 1909 season was much better than his 1908. A .274 and 56 RBIs compared to a .246 and 67 RBIs. Cy Seymour: At 37 Cy saw his production decline. A .291 and 104 RBIs last season was an off season. Won the 1905 Batter of the Year award. Chief Sockalexis: Homeboy Chief saw his 1909 production go under .300. Nonetheless Sockalexis could see double digit home runs again. Bill Kemmer: Bill hopes to bounce back from a horrendous 1909 season. A .241 avg was a personal disappointment. Kemmer is #2 for career HRs. Matty McIntyre: Matty hit 8 HRs last season after not hitting any for 2 season. McIntyre hopes to bounce back from a lackluster season.

The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power -- and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths -- and a favorable fall of the ball. "The hardest part was the triple," confessed Kirke, "A lot has to go right for you to get a triple. It is real easy to get greedy trying to stretch a double and get thrown out. It's really hard to get a three-bagger." He finished his special day with 6 hits in 6 at-bats, 5 RBI, 3 runs scored and a place in the record book. Jay Kirke singled in the 1st, hit a two-run double in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, tripled in the 6th, tripled in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off Bob Dresser in the 9th.

He totaled 271 hits, 58 doubles, 20 triples, 13 home runs, 122 RBIs and 182 runs scored. "It was an amazing year. It doesn't get any better than this," Cobb said during a press conference today. Shutouts 9/14 Nap Rucker (Pittsburgh) 4-0 over Giants. 9/16 Doc White (Cincinnati) 7-0 over Brooklyn. 9/18 Rube Kroh (Red Sox) 6-0 over White Sox. 9/20 Eddie Plank (Red Sox ) 18-0 over Browns. 9/24 Jack Harper (Cardinals) 4-0 over Brooklyn. 9/27 Jim St Vrain (Washington) 4-0 over White Sox. 9/27 Cy Falkenberg (Giants) 18-0 over Cincinnati. 9/29 Rube Waddell (Brooklyn) 9-0 over Pittsburgh. 10/4 George Chalmers (Cardinals) 4-0 over Pittsburgh. Draft Pool NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Sunday, October 2nd, 1910: For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in North American BaseBall League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Claude Hendrix, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Earl Hamilton, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 3. Hub Perdue, 28 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Tilly Walker, 23 year-old left fielder out of college. 5. Larry Cheney, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Pete Alexander, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Buck O'Brien, 28 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Hall Of Fame Inductions
Lifetime Award Hall of Fame Welcomes Mountain Saturday, November 19th, 1910: Today was an historic day in the life of pitching star, Frank Mountain. Today he was inducted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame and joined the ranks of baseball's elite. Lifetime Mountain put up a won-loss record of 375-308, had an ERA of 3.09, struck out 2323 batters and held opposing teams to a .263 batting average. Mountain made 725 mound appearances and worked 5880.2 innings in his career. During his induction speech, the talented hurler told the audience what he thought made him successful, "Less than a foot makes the difference between being the winning pitcher and the losing pitcher -- a hero and a bum -- and it can also be the difference between a short stint in the league, a ten-year career and making the Hall of Fame. Fortunately I was blessed with a strong arm, good movement and good location. Those few inches made a huge difference in my baseball career." Derby Gets Call From Hall Saturday, November 19th, 1910: For quite a few seasons George Derby unnerved batters as one of the best pitchers around. Yesterday it was his day for the jitters. The talented twirler became a baseball immortal as he was enshrined into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. "This is overwhelming, over the top. I can't put into words what this means," Derby told the crowd that had gathered to honor him as baseball's newest legend. "You don't get to the Hall of Fame by yourself. I got here with the help of some great teammates, coaches and managers. One of the greatest lessons I learned was how to pitch from a hitter's perspective. That's when I became a better-than-average big league pitcher." George Derby retired at 35 after a celebrated baseball career. He pitched in 557 games, compiled an impressive 309-213 won-lost record with a 2.52 ERA. Pioneer Award Ezra Sutton Joins the Hall of Fame Saturday, November 19th, 1910: One of the best players ever, third baseman Ezra Sutton, has received the ultimate honor for a baseball player -- being inducted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game. Sutton received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said, nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 805 games, Sutton batted .274 with 898 hits, 18 home runs, 448 RBIs and 507 runs scored. 1910 Accomplishments Jay Kirke hits for the cycle on 6/14 Nap Lajoie 3000th hit Tuck Turner 3000th hit Rube Waddell 3000th Strike out Cy Seymour 1000th RBI. 1911 Preseason
Name changes Boston Doves to Rustlers Brooklyn Brooklyn Superbas to Dodgers Major News Senators Win Sweepstakes for LF Cobb Tuesday, January 10th, 1911: Washington management was cautiously optimistic this afternoon as Ty Cobb formally signed a $31,230 contract with the organization. Known for his flippant, carefree attitude and for his lack of loyalty to a club, many in the upper echelon feared the temperamental left fielder would cause a scene, or, worse yet, back out of the deal at the last minute. Neither happened and the fans are warming up to the deal, provided Cobb confines his talking to the diamond. All-time Cobb has played in 918 games, batted .379 with 58 home runs and 1492 base hits.

1911 Washington Senator Preview
Pitching Jim St Vrain (20-16, 2.71 in 1910): Jim is coming off a mediocre season, but still a fine season. This season Jim is expected to carry most of the pitching load and record his 7th 20 game winning season. Christy Mathewson (19-21, 3.07): Big Six is coming off an off season. Mathewson is expected to bounce back and move closer to his 300th win. Ed Walsh (20-15, 3.32): In 1910 Ed notched his second straight 20 game winning season. Ed is poised to record a stellar season. Cy Young (9-11, 3.26): At 44, Cy is one of the oldest players in the North American BaseBall League. Cy, with his 356 wins, is ranked 4th in all time number of wins. He needs just 17 to pass Frank Mountain for 3rd place. Batting Nap Lajoie (.370, 75 RBIs): Nap is predicted to bat over .400 this season. 1910 saw Lajoie's seasonal RBI total to be at his lowest production. Solly Hofman (.278, 74 RBIs): Solly had a solid preformance and stole 21 bases last season. George Moriarty (.272, 6 HR, 49 RBIs): George's career performance in 1910 was a shock for the Senators upper management. Matty McIntyre (.252, 82 RBIs): McIntyre's HR performance went south in 1910. Hopefully Matty can turn around his second season of sub par performance. Roger Bresnahan (.263, 68 RBIs): Roger is looking for another break out season. Ty Cobb (.421, 13 HR, 12 RBIs): Ty was picked up off FA from Boston Red Sox. Ty is looking for another top performance along whit Nap to be one and two in BA. Al Kaiser (83rd top prospect) and Biff Schaller (75th top prospect): Biff and Al have some big shoes to fill with the sudden retirement of Chief Sockalexis.
