Week 17 recap

SCHEDULE:

3 @ Phoenix
3 @ Chicago

RESULTS
  • 7/26: FLA 6 DET 2 POTG Pollock W (14-3 3.64) 7.2 IP 6 H 2 ER 7 K Turner SV (4) 1 IP 1 H 2 K (0.65) Hallamore 2-4 2B (21) HR (22) SB (23) 2 RBI (69)

  • Zach Hogue (SF) went 5-5 for the second time this season but the Bears were beaten by San Antonio 13-7. He's hitting .329-25-72

FLORIDA, ALASKA SWAP PROSPECTS
The Florida Tarpons sent P prospects Dave Corra and Jeff Faulkner, along with C prospect Joey Scalzi to the Alaska Kodiaks in exchange for pitchers Sergio Coronado and reliever Tyrese Umoh as well as the Kodiaks 2nd round draft choice in 2011.

GM'S OFFICE
Teams are starting to make moves at the deadline. This wasn't a high impact deal for Alaska other than to move some salary and give some pitchers a change of scenery. Corra was our 7th best prospect and 4th ranked pitcher but our scouts say Coronado is almost a mirror image with more innings potential and a harder thrower. They are both almost 26. Coronado is ready to start in the ABA now, but he won't. He's also a guy I envision filling a hole as I have to move salary and that appears to be one of my starters. Likely Samvdio or Alatorre. Umoh is a left-handed power arm. He's put in the pen and Mike Allen is sent down. We now have 3 LHP and 3 RHP, which is ideal. Scalzi was in the backlog of catchers and Faulkner was a name so many teams hit on in trade talks and while we have acted as if he's almost untouchable our scouts since Julian Toro took over, don't think he's more than a 4 or 5 at best. The other thing is while our guys love Corra and think he's a potential 2 likely a 3, they see Coronado as almost the same but a potential 275+ K guy. The only other possible move would be Hayashi/Saldana, one of those two if I could swing an everyday OF that hits RH. I am also looking at the possibility of dealing one for prospects and giving Nate Bosse a shot. Only issue is he's a definite drop in defense which is something we have stabilized.

FLORIDA, AUSTIN AGREE TO SWAP
Officials from Florida confirmed they have dealt 26 year OF Dave Weller, minor league C prospect Jeremy Pope and a 5th round draft choice to the Austin Colts in exchange for 28-year-old SP Andy Luman and their 2nd round draft choice in 2011 as well as 25K in cash.

GM'S OFFICE
Weller deserves to play for someone in the ABA and it just wasn't going to be here. He's done nothing but rake in the minors with HR years of 30, 40, 26 and 25 this year. He's an LHH so that puts him way in the back of the line for us, not to mention there is a good group of OF prospects at AA and AAA that need AB's. This was also a move to grab another big league arm with options, which Luman is. He's 28 and a career 27-38 3.83 with 13 SV in 125 games, 74 starts. He's arbitration eligible. He was a 2010 NL All-Star this year as well.
  • 7/28: PHX 7 FLA 6 POTG Bursey 2-3 HR (20) 5 RBI (66) Samvdio 4 IP 8 H 5 ER 2 BB 6 K
  • Sergio Guerrero (BUF) struck out 4 in a 4-0 win over Jacksonville. He's 7-9 4.60
  • 7/29: FLA 8 PHX 5 POTG Christman 2-3 2 BB 2B (19) 2 RBI (63) Willoughby W (12-7 4.08) 7 IP 6 H 3 ER 4 K Galindo SV (25)
  • Chris Kantor (NY) tossed his 2nd shutout in his past 3 starts striking out 8 in a 10-0 win over Denver. He's 8-9 3.22 on the year.
  • Brooklyn sent 27-year-old Closer Jim Carr to the San Antonio Broncos for 3 prospects today. Carr is 2-3 3.95 with 19 saves this year and 11-13 with 73 saves the past 2 seasons. Carr will be a free agent at seasons end. The Broncos trail KC by 4 games in the NL Central but lead the NL WC by 2 games over 2nd place Pittsburgh and 5 over San Diego.

  • SHORT-SEASON ALL-STARS
  • SP Josh Drake 5-1 3.98, SP Josh McKenna 3-2 3.07, SP Mitch Kleine 3-1 2.54, OF Mike Michael .342/.449/.616

  • 7/30: FLA 14 CHI 4 POTG Hallamore 2-4 2 HR (24) 4 RBI (73) 3 R Chase 2-5 2B (11) HR (32) 3 RBI (73) Alatorre W (5-6 4.52) 7.2 IP 7 H 4 ER 4 K
  • 7/31: FLA 11 CHI 4 POTG Cortezo 2-4 Grand Slam (16) 4 RBI (65) Hallamore (25) Hayashi (18) Saldana (16) all homer Pollock W (15-3 3.72) 6.2 IP 11 H 4 ER 6 K
  • New Englands Jonathan Huber went 3-5 hitting 3 homers and driving in 5 in their 9-4 win over the Miners today. He's hitting .279-27-75

TRADE DEADLINE NEWS
The deadline came and went and no real blockbusters. With the exception of the 2 minor deals I did, I did nothing else. I had about 25131514 trades in the talks phase, some at the decision stage but couldn't pull the trigger as I could not ultimately justify breaking up this team. Winning at a .701 clip is not something you mess with. We are 22 games up as of today. Honestly not much worries me with the exception of getting Detroit in the post-season. They've beaten us 5 of the last 6 times and seem to have our pitching staff's number
  • 8/1: CHI 2 FLA 1 POTG Stanton W (15-6 3.62) 7.2 IP 6 H 1 ER 12 K D'Addio SV (24)
  • Sugihara L (10-4 3.09) 7.1 IP 9 H 2 ER 4 K Turner 0.2 IP 2 K (0.63)

Alaska in the AL and San Diego in the NL, both have made huge surges to close the gaps. Some races I didn't think would happen may actually get interesting.
Tyshawn Ogarro is putting up a monster season.
RJ Stanton looks like he's headed to 300 territory again.

  • No need to comment on the AL East, AL Central, NL Central. Those divisions are done barring a catastrophic collapse.
  • The AL West will be a good one, Pittsburgh and Washington are going to fight for the NL East again and LA and San Diego are locking horns after LA tanked midseason while San Diego found their legs.
  • I'm hoping Chicago and Vegas keep the WC in hand as I don't much like the thought of Detroit in October. Call it a gut feeling.
  • The NL wild card looks like fun. 3 teams with what could be 6-7 if things fall right.
  • A lot of interesting but not earth-shattering statistical years in the making. I am not seeing anything record breaking except for Camacho possibly giving the all-time single-season AVG a race. Averages tend to fluctuate so wildly month to month. Right now Camacho sits .0159 pts ahead of Zach Fussell's .3654 in 2000. Dave Groh's is in the conversation as Eric Hecht.

  • TARPONS MONTH
  • 2nd rounder Josh Thompson took home AA Pitcher of the Month going 5-0 1.62 throwing 44.1 innings with 34 punchouts. He's 16-3 4.42 with 155 K's in 179 IP.
  • Ben Phillips, another 2nd rounder, took home Class A pitcher of the Month going 3-0 1.53 over 47 innings. He's 12-6 2.75 in 199.2 IP
  • And finally 2009 4th rounder Mitch Kleine went 4-0 3.23 over 47.1 IP punching out 50. Astute readers may remember my comments about him in that draft. A 1st round talent with 50th round brains. Maybe we're seeing a change? He's 7-1 2.89 for Hobbs this year
  • Both Clovis and Alamogordo clinched playoff appearances. I won't do much roster shuffling given where we are and what they've earned.
  • I will recall relievers Tyrese Umoh and Joe Ballard
  • Catcher Eddie Ellerbee will be added to the 38 man and called up, and C Chris Schultz and reliever Mike Allen will be placed on Waivers. OF Luis Ramirez will be DFA'd.
  • I'll wait for Alamogordo to end their season before calling up Fine (1B) Motalbetti (IF) Yamaoka (IF) and I think OF prospect Andy Elizondo might have earned a roster spot and callup. Also OF Jamie Okereke (our only true CF other than Bursey) and Nate Bosse will get the call.

Division series

Quick reminder. The Division series has moved to a best of 7 format from the former best of 5.

Our first round matchup is one of those scary “reverse locks'. We went 11-1 vs Alaska this year. Samvdio was 4-0 1.80 and we hit 18 HR.
Eric Hecht hit .311-1-4 in 45 AB's.

GAME ONE

  • Las Vegas leads series 1-0

Alaska (DeSclafani 15-9 4.16) @ Florida (Pollock 18-7 4.34)
Holy Crap. Pollock doesn't survive the 2nd inning as Alaska scores 3 in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd. Just 1.2 IP and 5 ER. Chad Willoughby goes 4 in relief giving up just 1 run. None of the matters as DeScalfini takes a 6-0 lead into the 8th.
With 2 outs and down 6-1 Chris Christman hits a 3 run homer to make it 6-4.
Galindo walks two but escapes the top of the 9th with 2 K's.
Saldana grounds out to start the bottom of the 9th. Flores, Cortezo, and Hallamore all single to load the bases. Hughie Meah comes in and promptly walks Funicello to force in a run.
Hayashi works the count to 2-2 before striking out. The ONLY outcome we didn't want outside a double play.
Ben Chase then works a full count before hitting a low line drive to left that clears the fence for a game-winning walk-off grand slam!!!
Nine runs over the final 5 outs!
  • Florida 9 Alaska 6
  • W-Galindo (1-0) L-Corra (1-1)
  • HR FLA: Christman (1) Chase (1)*
  • POTG Ben Chase 1-4 walk-off grand slam

League championship series

  • I have zero expectations of anything resembling the Alaska series. Ohio is the only team in the game that outhit and outscored us (979-970). Our decided advantage is on the mound. Pollock beat them 2 times in 3 starts (2-0 3.92) and Mike Rose beat us twice in two starts (2-0 1.26).
  • As expected Sergio Robles was a beast hitting .351-2-7. Their offense as a whole hit 19 homers vs our 16. Guiomar Cortezo hit .370-4-9 vs General pitching. Ohio has made 11 trips to the playoffs winning their only title in 2008. They are trying to make it back to the series for a record-tying 6th time. I'll be stunned if this goes less than 6. If it does go less I don't think it'll be us moving on. They are just too damn deep on offense.
  • In the NL Pittsburgh looks to win their 2nd title while the Jets are looking for their 1st. Pittsburgh is also seeking a record 6th series appearance and the Jets are looking for their 3rd. Pittsburgh owned the Jets this season winning 8 of 12 games. Pittsburgh's top-ranked staff will be trying to stop the NL's 2nd ranked offense. The Jets were 1 game better in winning the NL East with a +165 run differential to the Miners +117
