Hebner has been a surprise. In June last year he hadn't been signed so I signed him for two years at league minimum, $52,800 for 82 and $57,600 for 83. He was OK but not great last year, probably worth $150,000 in salary. But hey, he was unemployed in June, so I guess no one else thought he was worth the money. Clearly he's a super steal this year at minimum wage

Some players way out performed their salaries this year. It takes some luck to win without spending money.

Richie Hebner was unemployed June last year and signed to a two year deal at league minimum. This year he's 136 games, .265 BA, 31 HRs, 4.1 WAR. (I don't mention modern statistics in the "newspaper" articles, just in comments.) Salary is $57,600.

Somehow Mike Easler got to age 31 without three years service. But in 83 he's on an auto renew contract of $57,600. For 83 he's 141 games, .287 BA, 10 HRs, 1.9 WAR.

John Candelaria isn't as cheap but he's still a bargain. He's in the fourth year of a five year deal that pays him $290,000 for 83. He's 19 - 8 with a league leading 2.25 ERA. His WAR is 6.4.

Vance Law is a second year player making $57,600. In 158 games he's .274 BA with 8 HRs and WAR is 5.1.

The Pirates started the season with the 15th ranked payroll at $5,393,058 and ended 14th ranked at $5,522,,266.

Top AL payroll is Angels $9,020,402. Top NL Payroll is Expos $9,313,431.

Ooooh some tough decisions there bud, especially with Nolan. Don't know about you but I love having a player spend his whole career with us, but it is tough to do in these later years when their salary expectations haven't caught up with their diminished skills.
