After much deliberation with my colleagues on the SABR Biographical Research Committee, we've confirmed that John Sterling, a Philadelphia minor leaguer was in fact the man who appeared for the Athletics on October 12, 1890. It was long suspected that he was the guy, but there was still some debate.

Anyway, John Sterling appears on five Old Judge cards during his brief stint with Minneapolis in spring 1888. He was released before appearing in a game. I was able to find images of three of his cards.

Articles from spring of 1888 identify the player with Minnesota as James O. Stirling, a pitcher from the Cass club of Detroit (see the Minneapolis Star Tribune, March 17, 1888). After being released by Minneapolis, he signed with Jackson (Detroit Free Press, May 27, 1888). He died in August of 1893, per the Detroit Free Press August 26, 1893.

So the Old Judge player is not John Sterling. The spelling on the card is wrong, as best I can tell.

Ooh, thanks for this correction. I noticed the notes about Sterling in 1888 said he was from Detroit, but given the vagaries of coverage in the era, I kinda disregarded it.

It is very strange because John Sterling's obituary mentions he appeared for Minneapolis, which is why I conflated the two.

I'm wondering if someone knew of a "Sterling" from the Old Judge card with Minnesota at one point and just assumed it was John Sterling.

I've run across obituaries for players from the St. Louis Whites (minor league Western Association club in 1888), and they will say "... played for Comiskey on the famous St. Louis National League club in the 1880s." So many things wrong with that statement.

The notably reluctant and troubled 1st Baseman. This was a club-issued photo and easily dates to 1968 (he didn't join them until mid-season 1967 and in 1969 the team wore the 100th Anniversary patch on their vests).

I've spent the last several months going line-by-line through the Pegasus UIN list. I discovered that, over the years, I have been less-than-thorough in removing items as they were found and posted, and for that I apologize.

I've now separated player names into first and last names, so they can be sorted by last name. I'll continue to maintain lists by player name and also by team, at least for the foreseeable future. In the background, I'm working on an even more comprehensive project that will probably take me the rest of the year, essentially expanding the UIN list back to 1871 and forward to 2022.

Before sharing the updated list, during my review I found more than 100 UIN items that had not yet been posted. I'll start posting those here, and will post an announcement when the updated list is ready for public release.
