This was part of the Fritsch sell-off on eBay. Appropriate to his reputation, it's profile, but it's an actual image of Marshall with the Rangers.

(These postcards have hit the market en masse; apparently this was the massive collection of Bill White, the Pennsylvania collector. When he couldn't find a postcard - from James Elder, usually - he'd create one: often a black and white copy of a color Brace or other bizarre bits of alchemy. Lots of them are shots from the Florida Instructional League. Where the Marshall comes from, I can't tell from the postcard itself, or the background)

I've done my yearly update to one of my side-projects, a site that displays images of all (now) 1,919 men to have played for the Red Sox since 1901, plus all managers and coaches.

I found a nice woodcut of Alex McFarlan in the 12/27/1896 edition of the Savannah Morning News (spelled in the caption as McFarland). He had been engaged to become player/manager of Savannah but funds ran out quickly for 1897. He played for Terre Haute and Asheville instead. The 12/20/1896 make mention of him playing with Norfolk in 1896 to confirm this is the correct player.

I spent a lot of time on McFarlan and figured he was findable. Found woodcuts of a couple of his brothers at various points. Nicely done!

The Larry Fritsch E-Bay Postcard Lalapalooza keeps going, this time turning up an image of James in the 1978 unis, which to my knowledge is the first we've seen of him in this vintage...still looking for something in color, but this will do in pinch.
