Cards news: June 23 -- Showalter and Cotto sent to Atlanta for minor-league 1B
Sometimes, enough is enough.
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired 26-year-old first baseman Jon Fredrico from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP Zach Showalter and left-handed Magdiel Cotto. Fredrico has spent most of the season at AAA Gwinett, where in five games he has hit .273 with two home runs and six RBIs. He also got his first chance to play in the majors, getting in nine games/just one start with the Braves. In those games, he hit .143 with no homers or RBIs. A season after posting the best ERA in the National League (3.06), the 2033 campaign has been a complete reversal for the 29-year-old Showalter. In 14 games/13 starts, he is 4-6 with a 5.81 ERA. Regulated to the bullpen, in his only appearance as a reliever he allowed two runs on four hits in just 1.1 innings. His last start before being demoted to the bullpen last an inning, as he allowed four runs on seven hits. A free agent after the season, it just seemed best to cut ties now. Taken off the waiver wire after being released by the Phillies. Cotto, 30, was garbage in his short time with the Cardinals. In nine appearances, covering 7.2 innings, he allowed 16 hits, 13 earned runs, three home runs, walked seven, struck out two. His record was 0-2 with a 15.26 ERA. Good riddance. |

Cards news: June 24 -- RHP Halvorsen gets first start, lost for season with elbow injury
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that right-handed pitcher Gabe Halverson has been lost for the season after suffering an elbow injury in a 6-3 loss to the Miami Marlins on June 24.
Halvorsen, 24, had thrived as a member of the bullpen for most of the season. But when injuries opened a spot in the rotation. He was given the opportunity. It ended with him leaving the game with a sore elbow which was later diagnosed as arthritis related. He is expected to miss up to four months. For the season, the 24-year-old pitched in 19 games/one start and went 1-1 with two saves and a 2.01 ERA. |

Cards news: June 24 -- 3B Almeyda sent to Phillies for 2B Cunningham
The St. Louis Cardinals had high hopes when they acquired 3B Luis Almeyda from the Los Angeles Angels in the offseason.
But they quickly evaporated. After a decent April -- where he batted .247 with four home runs and 12 RBIs -- his production has dropped off the table. Through 68 games/66 starts, he is hitting .214 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. With free agency looming at the conclusion of the season, and the team falling out of contention, the Cardinals decided to cut ties. They didn't get nothing for him landing second baseman Kayson Cunningham from Philadelphia. The 26-year-old is a two-time All-Star selection and is hitting .288 with three home runs and 28 RBIs through 69 games/65 starts this season. |

Cards news: June 27 -- OF/1B Spencer Torkleson granted his release
The St. Louis Cardinals have opted to release outfielder/first baseman Spencer Torkleson after he refused a demotion to AAA Memphis.
Signed as a free agent in the off-season, the 33-year-old Torkleson has hit just .219 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 35 games/29 starts. He also had made comments to the front office about his lack of playing time. So when he was asked to move to Memphis and refused, the team opted to cut him loose. The team has recalled 25-year-old outfielder Bob Lankford from the Redbirds. Acquired in an off-season trade with the Chicago White Sox, Lankford opened the season as the team's starting left fielder and a good first couple of weeks before fading. In 54 games/53 starts with St. Louis, he hit .225 with three home runs and 21 RBIs. Lankford did struggle with Memphis hitting just .190 with one home run and five RBIs in 18 games/17 starts. |
