WOODCUT LOCATED Joe Fagin 1895 St. Louis Browns
Been working hard on the Joe Fagin case, and in doing so found a nice woodcut of him in the March 16, 1896 Memphis Commercial Appeal.
He signed with Memphis, but seems to have been let go before the season. The paper also had a nice woodcut that is an upgrade of Bill Wittrock, who was Fagin's battery mate in the Cincinnati amateur scene. |

We do have at least a couple photographs of Whitrock, including this one from his time with Quincy in 1892. |

Bill Whitrock / Bill Wittrock 1890
Quote:
Attached is a copy of the second image for Wittrock ?, which I believe dates from 1891, the suffix cdr has been applied to the image, I guess that is Cedar Rapids. Should a change be applied to his name spelling in the excellent facepack? Last edited by UKBaseballfan; 08-10-2024 at 01:08 AM. |

Paul Castner 1923
As far as I'm aware, we still have no major league images for Castner, but here at least is a baseball image, showing him as the captain of the Notre Dame baseball team, shortly before his ML cup of coffee.

George Patterson 1884 Philadelphia Keystones
Just wanted to flag that the photo of George Patterson is not the right guy.
The Keystones player was a local Philly semi-pro, who we've not definitively tracked down yet. The photo we have is of George Patterson Jr., who was a lifelong Erie, PA resident, who can be found living in Erie in 1884, and played for the local club in 1889-90, when he was photographed. |

Ed Mars?
I saw on here that Ed Mars is considered a missing player aside from a really terrible picture where you can't even see his face, but his Wikipedia page has an image of a player from the 1888 Syracuse Stars team photo. I'm just going to take a guess here and say whoever put it on there was wrong? If that's the case who is that player then?

But to my knowledge there is only a bad passport photo and a bad caricature for Mars. |

Mike Garcia 1948 UIN Senators
Taken from a 1961 Senators team photo. I'll leave him on the list, for now, as need better.

That's much better! Thank you. He's no longer on a list.

Bob Lawson 1901 (1902 Baltimore uniform)
Lawson was the starting pitcher in two games and relieved in one for Baltimore in 1902 before his release on June 14th, which ended his two-season major league career. He had been on the roster of the Boston Nationals for part of the 1901 season. This image is from the Baltimore Herald of May 27th, 1902.

Harry Arndt 1902 (Baltimore uniform)
Arndt had begun his major league career with the Tigers in the summer of 1902, but was lent to the Baltimore Orioles after they had been stripped of most of their best players by NL owners and left with an insufficient roster to field a team. (The American League quickly took control of the franchise.)
Arndt remained with the Orioles for the rest of the season, appearing in 68 games in multiple positions. He was sent back to Detroit after the end of the season, but did not reappear in the major leagues until 1905, when he was a member of the Cardinals. There is an excellent Carl Horner portrait of him in a St. Louis uniform (see post# 32526 in this thread), but this image from the Baltimore Herald dated July 19th, 1902, shows him in the Orioles' home uniform. Lew "Sport" McAllister 1896 (Baltimore uniform)
Lew McAllister had been a member of the Detroit Tigers in 1901 and 1902, but when the American League restocked the Baltimore Orioles roster with lent players in the summer of '02, McAllister was among the players to go. He appeared in only three games for the Orioles, at second base and first base, and was then returned to Detroit for the rest of the season.
This image is from the Baltimore Herald of July 19th, 1902, and shows McAllister in the Baltimore home uniform. Last edited by RUKen; 08-18-2024 at 10:01 AM. |
