Jimmie Collins Salon de la Fama
Cusick, once you alerted me to the fact that Jimmie Collins is in the Mexican league Hall of Fame I was quickly able to find another image of Collins playing for Chihuahua Dorados (1978-80). According to the Salon de la Fama website , Jimmie Collins won four batting titles south of the border and is currently #3 on the all time list at .354.

Aaron "Hank" Randall
I found these images on the Facebook page of Aaron Randall II who like his father played baseball at Grambling State University. Aaron "Ace" Randall pitched for the Tigers from 2002 until 2006. Here are two images of his dad in a Cubs uniform. From spring training I presume. Aaron "Hank" Randall made it to AAA in 1979 hitting .276 in what appears to be an injury shortened season. His last.

Rick Kemp lefthander
Here is a southpaw originally drafted by the second incarnation of the Washington Senators in 1970. Kemp reached AAA in 1975 before missing time due to injury concluding his professional career in 1977 with the AA Tulsa Drillers. Pictured is Rick Kemp in a Texas Rangers uniform. Presumably a spring training photo.

Guido Grilli
Grilli was a southpaw who briefly made the major leagues with the Red Sox and the Kansas City A's in 1966. Pictured here as a Seattle Ranier where he played in the 1961, 1963 and '64.

Luis Fernando Guzman
The bespectacled Mexican born Guzman was the ace of the 1977 Durango Alacranes (Scorpions) of the Mexican League southwest division. Lanky and unassuming , Guzman won 13 games with a sparkling 2.15 ERA in 218 innings. His finest season. According to Baseball Reference his career south of the border began in 1975 and ended in 1982. However I have found that the Mexican League stats are often incomplete. Guzman stated in a recent interview that he also pitched in Panama and for the White Sox organization reaching AA. BR has no information for this but I did find an image of Luis Guzman in the one of a kind White Sox uniforms of the late 70's and in the uniform of the Hermosillo Naranjeros a team not listed on his resume.

Lewis Henke 1885
Henke was tragically the first player to die from injuries on the baseball field. In August of 1885 while playing in a game for the Atlanta team of the Southern League, Henke smashed a base hit. While running past first, he colllided with Lefty Marr of the Nashville team and suffered a ruptured liver. He died the following day and his teammates held a fundraising game for is family not long after. Marr was apparently very shaken up and emotional about the incident for a long time afterwards.

Charlie Keller III
Charlie Keller III was the son of Charlie Keller, the noted outfielder of the New York Yankees, whose formal name was Charles Keller, Jr. Keller III was a first baseman who made his way through the Yankee system to get an invitation as a non-roster player to the Yanks' spring camp in 1962. The photo shows him in that capacity with Joe DiMaggio peeking over his shoulder.
The Minnesota Twins picked him up before the following season and placed him on their spring roster for 1963. However, the same injury that kept him from succeeding with the Yanks led to his retirement before getting a real chance with the Twins. Following his baseball career, he had a successful career in harness racing and had a horse win the Hambletonian. His farm, inherited from his father, is called Yankeeland Farms. I believe it remains in the Keller family. He passed away last month at the age of 82. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=keller003cha |

Luke Schildknecht 1888 Des Moines and Sioux City
Luke Schildknecht played one game with Des Moines in 1888 before being sold to Sioux City when that club replaced St. Louis in the Western Association. Baseball-Reference has no biographical information about him, but newspapers from the time strongly suggest he was from Kentucky. The last reference I have been able to find for him has him working in New Hampshire in the late 1890s.
I just found a photo of George Schildknecht, born in 1863 (putting him at 25 in 1888), and there is a resemblance (IMO) to Luke. George has siblings Conrad Louis and William Louis (both of whom are too young to have been Luke). It is not inconceivable that he too had a middle name of Louis. There is another George Schildknecht, born in 1860, also from Kentucky. I think they were cousins. He has a brother, Louis (born in June 1866), who moved to California and changed his last name to Shelley. I found a photo of him at a much older age with his wife, Jessie. So now we have two options for Luke Schildknecht. Any thoughts as to which is a better match? Last edited by prewinter; 10-09-2021 at 11:58 AM. |

I think there are some very minor differences in the ear shapes between the older man and the exemplar photo, so I would say that the photo of the younger man is the better match. It's certainly a difficult call.

I have yet to prove the two Schildknecht families are related, but the resemblance suggests they have to be. |

Charles Boyd Danville 1888
The Old Judge card set has a card of Charles Boyd, identified with the Chicago Maroons of the 1888 Western Association. Boyd was signed in February, and was last mentioned in a writeup in the Chicago newspapers in March. He never played with the Maroons, but did play with Danville later in 1888 (boyd--001---). No biographical information is known for Boyd (that I am aware of)... until now.
[Deleted information about Charles Newton Boyd... wrong guy!] Upon further review, C.N. Boyd was Comma (short for Commadore) Nathaniel Boyd. It seems "Charles", as published in the Chicago papers in February and March 1888, was just wrong. Never post things after midnight... Boyd may also have played for Leavenworth in 1886. Baseball-reference identifies Botd as the player, but box scores and articles identify the player as Boyd, playing first base, the same position Boyd played in college. Looking for photo of minor league player Luther Burns
Luther Burns played in the Cubs system in the late 1940s through mid 1950s. A request for photos was posted on a SABR news list. Any help would be appreciated by this person. His request is below.
------------ I am trying to locate a photo of 1940s/1950s minor league pitcher Bob "Luther" Burns and am not having any luck. Burns played for the Springfield Cubs (1949), Sioux Fall Canaries (1949), Des Moines Bruins (1954), Cedar Falls Indians (1954), Burlington Bees (1955) and Magic Valley Cowboys (1955) ... but I'm not having any luck even finding a team photo that he was in. Mr. Burns passed away recently and his family is looking for photos. They have news clips, but no photos. Any suggestions? |
