Mike Flynn 1891 MISSING PLAYER

I found a nice image of Flynn playing amateur baseball circa 1890 in Lowell, MA. The team photograph was pictured in the 1/15/1913 edition of the Lowell Courier-Citizen and mentions that Flynn "owns a paying bowling alley in Fall River." This is true of the major leaguer, who lived there until the early 1920s before moving to Hollywood.

In working on a 1965 project, I am beginning to believe the newly-christened California Angels still wore caps with the "LA" on them and did not debut the "CA" caps until 1966 - can someone confirm or refute?

Here's some research I did on the issue about 8 or 9 years ago. I haven't found out much more since. Maybe Merkle can help with some more detail about the prototype hat.

With Cimoli I now have "LA" photos for everyone who played for the Angels in 1965. I'm curious about the possibility of finding 1965 Angels in a "CA" hat, though. I have CA photos of the entire 1965 Angels coaching staff and all 25 1965 Angels who also played for the team in 1966 and after. I'm more interested in the players who made their last Angels appearance in 1965.

Gene Autry announced that the team would immediately switch from their Los Angeles designation to California prior to the team's game against the Yankees on September 2, thus making Whitey Ford the first pitcher to face the California Angels (there's some SABR trivia for you). Of the 17 players whose Angels tenure ended in 1965, eight (Lou Clinton, Charlie Dees, Aubrey Gatewood, Joe Koppe, Barry Latman, Vic Power, Merritt Ranew and Dick Simpson) appeared in games after Autry's announcement.

Merkle mentioned a prototype hat that surfaced during the Detroit series in late August, but can anyone tell me when, if at all, the team wore "CA" hats during games, either before or after Autry's announcement? I know that the Angels were still wearing "LA" helmets (I'm not sure about caps) for Bert Campaneris's 9-position game on 08-Sep-1965. Is a 1965 "CA" photo for those eight players even possible? I have a "CA" photo of one of them--Aubrey Gatewood, but it was taken in 1966.

Taffy not Tom Wright

Saw this photo offered by my_WDW_planner on ebay. It was identified a Tom Wright but it looks to me like it is Taffy Wright. Good shot though.

Charles Dougherty

I had someone randomly message me on sabr.org saying they want to know the source of the Charles Dougherty (1884) image as they think it may actually be a minor leaguer from Wisconsin by the same name. I honestly have no idea so I will ask someone here since this is where I originally found it.

The Dougherty photo is correct - it's from the 1886 Altoona team photo - which the correct Dougherty played for.

I discovered that the bio details for Dougherty were incorrect - there were two minor leaguers named Charlie Dougherty playing at the same time - one from Philadelphia and one from Wisconsin.

The Philly Dougherty is the correct guy and played for Union Association Altoonas in 1884 and with the minor league Altoonas in 1886 (where he is in the team photo).

Thanks, i figured it was the correct man given that tnfoto wouldnt have let such an error slip onto his mostly accurate missing/found players list for so long if that was the case, given that this image was discovered on here for a while.

Roy Nichols not Frank Rosso

I just stumbled across this mixup. The player pictured in the quoted post is Roy Nichols and not Frank Rosso.

Larry Foss 1961 (in 1962)

Following this site's relationship with, and rules about, George Brace photographs, is at best a roller-coaster. But if I remember correctly their ownership is in flux and nobody's enforcing any copyright. If otherwise, I'll be happy to remove these next few startling finds.

Besides the obvious maddening quality to the Braces (that the quality varies from artistry to take-the-lens-off-next-time) there's one other confounding but sometimes joyous quality-control issue. Brace and his widow understandably were not able to maintain a 100% record of inventory and periodically stuff bubbles up out of collections that Mary Brace insisted did not exist.

Case in point: for years those pursuing a set of good color images of the '62 Mets crashed when it came to Larry Foss, a pitcher the Mets bought from the Pirates on waivers in September. Topps did not get him (or if they did, the images were lost when a bunch of files of obscure players was sent to Larry Fritsch for the "One Year Winners" series in the '80s) and Brace had one decent pitching pose, ruined by a flaw in the negative that produced an unfixable stripe over about a third of the image.

I recently bought a huge collection of Braces in hopes of finding a few white whales or at least some unseen images, and I was not disappointed. I would suggest there are maybe 100 I've never seen before. I don't think any of them are absolute first-known images of guys in given uniforms, but there are lots of really scarce guys and even better, better images of lots of Braces.

Like Larry Foss of the 1962 Mets. TWO superb shots to replace the stripe-ruined ones. If you'll look closely you'll notice that these were not taken at the same time. He's got a jacket on under his uniform in the portrait and not in the pitching pose. The stripe-ruined one is a pitching pose with the jacket. In other words, Brace posed him twice!

More of other guys to come. You'll like his Ron Herbel/Mets.
