Dick Radatz 1962 (in 1969)

Back to the Brace file:

Exactly when Dick Radatz hurt himself, or what he hurt, is unclear. His splits in 1965 and 1966 are inconsistent. He had slumps before his decline seemed to have begun; he logged high strike out totals after it clearly had.

Still, he went from whiffing 608 men in the first 538 innings in the first 270 games in compiling 49 wins and 98 saves in the first four years of his career, to winning three games, saving 22 and being dealt four times in the last three years of his career.

Mickey Mantle batted 16 times against Radatz and struck out in 12 of them.

The last stop was when the Tigers sold him to the Expos at the June 15th deadline in 1969. This was something of a collecting finish by the first-year Montreal franchise. It signed the great Pirates closer Roy Face on April 27th, bought Radatz, and bought the ex-Astros All-Star reliever Claude Raymond from the Braves on August 19th. In a touch of irony the first Expo game ever was started by Jim "Mudcat" Grant, whom they traded to the Cardinals on June 3, thus beginning his three-year renaissance as a pretty solid closer for teams other than theirs.

Because not nearly as many people read I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally (Jim Bouton's follow-up to Ball Four), I think I should note that one anecdote from the second book is about a man who, during Radatz's days in Boston, would pay Dick to visit his apartment, where the gentleman would strip off (not what you think) and have Radatz throw oranges at him.

(I hope that Radatz removed the rinds first, but Bouton doesn't say.)

Karl Olson 1951 (in 1957)

A pause from the Braces. This is on eBay from our old friend SoxPhotos, a J.D. McCarthy they were unable to identify.

It's Ted Olson, the one-time replacement for war-bound Ted Williams in the Red Sox outfield who finished up with eight games for the '57 Tigers. I've only seen one other image of him in a Detroit uni.

1924 Cleveland Indians

I am in the process of trying to obtain representative images of all Major League players who were active in 1924. The team that I have the most missing players are the Cleveland Indians. I would be most grateful if anyone could provide a 1924 image for any of the following Indians, :- Virgil Cheeves, Watson Clark, Frank Ellerbe, Paul Fitzke, Tom Gulley, Kenny Hogan, Ray Knode, Bob Kuhn, Jake Miller, Freddy Spurgeon and Carl Yowell. Thank you.

Red Kelly 1910

From the latest RMY auction. They claim it's only the 2nd image of Kelly, but we've got two already (one from his Notre Dame days). Still, we can use another.

(Had to do a bit of work here, taking out the sepia and boosting the brightness but using the contrast to avoid washiing it out.

Not a great image, but this depicts Frank Ellerbe with the 1924 Indians. He was pictured in the 6/25/1924 edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Thank you so much for the images of Cheeves and Ellerbe, one of which appears to show him with his time with the Browns.

Carl Yowell 1924

Here's Yowell, in what I guess is a Conlon? This is actually a 1925 pic (courtesy of ebay seller russtygold), but the uniform is the same, so l think this might help.

Fred Spurgeon 1924

As with Yowell, this is from 1925 (same eBay seller), but the same uniform as 1924.

Bub Kuhn 1924

This is a poor photo, but it gets Kuhn in a Cleveland uniform. It's from the Washington Evening Star of March 19, 1924.

It's the same uniform as worn in 1924.
