Say hi to Rube Walker (54), Gil Hodges, and Tommie Agee in that 2nd pic.

Remember, Hank was the prospect in that family. Baby bro Frank (aka Tug) was only signed as a favor.

Greg Walker-California Angels

Hi,

In the photo code catalog it says that EH525-527 is Greg Walker and he's wearing an Angels uniform. I looked all through Baseball Reference including his SABR biography and I couldn't find anything about the Angels. Could someone give me some enlightenment on these photos.

Thanks,

BRobby5

The Angels signed Walker to a AAA contract in February 1991 and he went to spring training with them. But Walker came down with shoulder and elbow problems and in March he decided to quit. See the Los Angeles Times for March 7th and March 19th, 1991.

Tommy Cahill (1891)

One season in the majors, with Louisville in 1891, during which he played seven positions, missing only 1B and P. This sketch was in the Louisville paper prior to the start of the season.

Identified as Tom Cahill in some posts in this forum.

Hank McGraw and Joe Nolan

Part of the confusion here is: these are two different players, photographed five or six years apart.

The catcher cocking his arm on the left is indeed Hank McGraw, Tug's brother, in Spring Training with the '66 Mets and a well-traveled (seven organizations) minor leaguer who actually played four times as many games in the outfield as behind the plate.

The catcher on the right is indeed Joe Nolan, before he donned the aviator glasses he wore while with the Braves, Reds, and (1983 World Champion) Reds. The shot is from Spring Training 1971 or 1972 and his four-game cameo with the Mets was in '72.

Mike Marshall - 1977 Rangers

(These postcards have hit the market en masse; apparently this was the massive collection of Bill White, the Pennsylvania collector. When he couldn't find a postcard - from James Elder, usually - he'd create one: often a black and white copy of a color Brace or other bizarre bits of alchemy. Lots of them are shots from the Florida Instructional League. Where the Marshall comes from, I can't tell from the postcard itself, or the background)
Adding these B&W images while we wait for a better color one other than the one of him sitting next to a fan ....

Mike Gaule 1889

I found an additional photo of Gaule, a 1 game major leaguer for Louisville in 1889. He was pictured in the 9/11/1904 edition of The Baltimore Sun playing for the Police Department's baseball team. For those that prefer uniformed images (like myself) this is a welcomed discovery. Additionally, I believe John Meister is also pictured in the team photo.

Great find, I spent a lot of time namesearching Gaule, while trying to properly ID fellow strikebreaker and longtime battery mate Walter Fisher, so am surprised I never came across this.

BTW I think that's an excellent chance that the "fan" in the picture with Mike Marshall in the stands at Rangers' Spring Training was his then-wife, Nancy. The holding of hands suggests... let's hope so

I think the second photo (the head shot) also shows him in a Washington uniform. It appeared in the Washington Post on March 20, 1914, accompanying a story about Meusel's getting the winning hit in a Senators' victory over the University of Virginia in an exhibition game.
I haven't logged on here in a while. Thank you for posting the Irish Meusel photos. I really appreciate it.

Phillies player identity

I was wondering who is this guy? This is from the 1890 Phillies team picture. I think it looks like Bill Gray but I want to have someone here review it for me first.

It is Gray. Here is a woodcut with player IDs, and a higher-res version of Gray.

1890 Phillie?

On the subject of the 1890 Philadelphia Phillies does anyone know who the player is in the attached image which appears to depict the 1890 Philadelphia uniform?

Thank you.
