Shut outs 8/5 Rube Marquard (Cincinnati) 9-0 over Phillies. 8/7 Tom Hughes (Athletics) 14-0 over White Sox. 8/10 Nap Rucker (Pittsburgh) 2-0 over Phillies. His 4th of the season. 8/11 Ed Walsh (Washington0 7-0 over Highlanders. 8/14 Roy Witherup (Cleveland) 9-0 over Browns. News Murphy on a Rampage, Hits for Cycle Saturday, August 5th, 1911: Getting 4 hits in a game is no easy feat, but hitting for the cycle is much more rare. Danny Murphy was on fire today, going 4 for 6 and hitting for the cycle against St. Louis at Robison Field. His batting escapade sparked the Boston Rustlers to a 16-7 victory over the Cardinals. For the day the Rustlers right fielder scored 3 runs and drove in 4. The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power, and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths and a well-placed drive deep into the outfield. He told reporters after the game, "It just happened. Must have been fate or something... you can't plan this. I was more concerned with winning the game." Danny Murphy struck out in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Roy Hitt in the 6th, hit an RBI triple in the 7th and doubled in the 9th. Red Sox Severeid Sizzles with Cycle Saturday, August 5th, 1911: The big buzz in the baseball world is about Hank Severeid's performance today at Huntington Avenue Grounds against Detroit. Severeid had 4 hits en route to hitting for the cycle, leading the charge for the Boston 18-6 triumph over the Tigers. A cycle requires each of the four types of hits possible -- single, double, triple and home run. A batter has to have power, speed, and a little luck to do it. "It was one of those games you dream about," Severeid told the press. "I never expected to do something like this when I showed up at the park today. All you really want to do is hit it hard and put it into play. The hits will come." And the hits did come today. The 20-year-old catcher rounded out his superb batting display with 4 hits in 6 at-bats, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Hank Severeid singled in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Art Fromme in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th and hit a two-run triple in the 8th.

Friday, October 13th, 1911: It's playoff time! The best teams have been decided in the divisional battles and now it is the survival of the fittest. Only one team will survive and they will be crowned the North American BaseBall League champions. Here are the match-ups in the North American Series: Chicago Cubs versus Washington Senators. Shut outs 9/12 Addie Joss (Browns) 4-0 over White Sox. 9/12 Roy Witherup (Cleveland) 12-0 over Detroit. 9/18 Willie Mitchell (Pittsburgh) 1-0 over Giants. 9/19 Jim St Vrain (Washington) 5-0 over White Sox. 9/24 Doc White (Cincinnati) 2-0 over Giants. 9/25 Red Ames (Giants) 12-0 over Cincinnati. 9/26 Ed Walsh (Washington) 13-0 over Cleveland. 9/27 Christy Mathewson (Washington) 21-0 over Detroit. 10/5 Red Ames (Giants) 10-0 over Brooklyn. Joe Jackson Wins NL Batting Title Friday, October 13th, 1911: When it came to hitting in the National League this season, none did it better than Joe Jackson of the Chicago Cubs. He surpassed all his peers with a .388 average to take the 1911 batting crown. The 22-year-old left fielder had 259 hits, including 53 doubles, 38 triples and 5 home runs. Jackson participated in 152 games and also chipped in 140 RBIs and scored 164 times. AL Batting Title Belongs to Cobb Friday, October 13th, 1911: Washington left fielder Ty Cobb had added the 1911 American League batting crown to his resume. He batted .389 with 41 doubles, 37 triples and 7 home runs among his 258 hits. Cobb also drove in 117 runs and scored 179. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Monday, October 2nd, 1911: The list of players who have declared for the first-year player draft was announced earlier today. BNN will have special coverage dedicated to this draft. Just look in the transaction section for the special page dedicated to the young players hoping to make a name for themselves in the show. Teams now have a chance to scout the draft pool for 30 days before the draft is held. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Ray Keating, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 2. Joe Bush, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 3. Pete Alexander, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Benny Kauff, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 5. Al Demaree, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Gene Packard, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Hugh Bedient, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Jimmy Lavender, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Hooks Dauss, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Jeff Tesreau, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. Doyle Hits for the Cycle Wednesday, September 13th, 1911: Jim Doyle produced one of the rarest feats in baseball today when he hit for the cycle against the New York Giants in the Boston 11-7 win at South End Grounds III. Afterward, Doyle acknowledged that his accomplishment was special, but he was more interested in helping the Rustlers just win some ballgames. At the postgame press conference, he said, "Maybe one day I'll look back on this day with more meaning, but right now I just want to come out tomorrow and put some good swings on the ball, get a few hits and help my club win another game." On his historic day, he went 5-5 with 4 runs batted in and 3 runs scored -- and also got a spot in the league record books. Maybe one day way down the road he will get out the record book and reminisce about his extra special day in baseball. Jim Doyle hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI triple in the 5th and hit a two-run home run off Ralph Caldwell in the 7th.

News Chicago, Washington Swap Players Friday, June 7th, 1912: BNN has learned the Chicago Cubs have reportedly worked out a deal with the Washington Senators. Sources close to the Cubs indicated that a trade has been reached in principle where 26-year-old third baseman George Moriarty will be swapped to Chicago with 29-year-old first baseman Dave Rowan, 22-year-old reliever Pug Cavet and a 4th round draft pick heading to Washington. Neither organization would comment on the report, saying it was club policy not to speak about a trade until it was finalized.

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Thursday, September 12th, 1912: The biggest anxiety for 1912 new young players is getting drafted. For the young man with something to prove, simple entrance into the draft does not guarantee a big league contract. Some will suffer the excruciating torment of having to stand by as their competitors get picked before them, hoping that they get a slim chance to prove their skills anywhere. At any rate, teams now have 30 days to scout the draft pool before the draft is held. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Doc Watson, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Reb Russell, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Wally Schang, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 4. Bob Shawkey, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. Bill James, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Johnny Bassler, 17 year-old catcher out of high-school. 7. Chief Johnson, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Nick Cullop, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Dutch Leonard, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Rube Foster, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college.

Over the Top, Cobb Bats .434 Monday, October 7th, 1912: Ty Cobb joined a very select group today as he closed out 1912 with a torrid .434 batting average. It was a fantastic year for the Washington center fielder as he became the newest member of baseball's .400 club. During the season he stroked 261 hits, including 53 doubles, 33 triples and 6 home runs. Cobb also scored 166 times and drove in 126 runs. Asked by the media what's the hardest part of hitting .400, he glibly replied, "Getting 4 hits in every 10 at-bats." Then, speaking seriously, Cobb added, "Staying out of slumps is important. You have to be focused in every game and in every at-bat. Don't swing at anything but strikes... and stay away from any pitch you can't hit." Jackson Really Swings with .419 Season Monday, October 7th, 1912: Joe Jackson of Chicago has joined a mere handful of men to hit over .400 for a single season. The 23-year-old Cubs left fielder hit .419 in a colossal year at the plate, rapping out 270 hits, 54 doubles, 22 triples and 10 home runs. Baseball's latest member of the elite .400 club also drove in 120 runs and scored 179. "As much as I could, I tried to just forget about hitting .400 and just focus on each at-bat and trying to help my club," Jackson told BNN. "But as you guys know, there is no way to quietly hit .400." Speaker Joins Exclusive .400 Club Monday, October 7th, 1912: Tris Speaker's 1912 campaign will go down as one of the greatest in baseball history. Speaker, 24, hit .401, becoming one of a handful of ballplayers who have ever cracked the .400 barrier. In his brilliant season the Giants center fielder banged out 37 doubles, 13 triples and 13 homers. He scored 190 times and batted in 136 runs. Asked what advice he would give to any budding .400 hitters, Speaker said, "Don't let all the hullabaloo get to you. Don't let a bad at-bat or a bad game get to you. I never dwell on the negative things that happen, I just try to learn from them, not repeat them and move on. I read a long time ago that great players all share traits like this. They accentuate the positives and eliminate the negatives." NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 7th, 1912: With the playoffs mere hours away, each of the contenders are putting their game faces on. It's time for ballplayers to leave it all on the field. In the North American BaseBall League playoffs, miracles do happen, but most often it's simply the team that plays better baseball that goes home with the prize -- the much-coveted North American Series championship. The North American Series starts today with these games: St. Louis Browns versus New York Giants.

1912 Awards
Top Defensive Players Named by NL Sunday, October 27th, 1912: What does it take to win a Glove Wizard Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the National League consists of: Pitcher: Nap Rucker (Pittsburgh Pirates) Catcher: Jack Lapp (Boston Braves) First Baseman: Stuffy McInnis (Philadelphia Phillies) Second Baseman: Johnny Evers (Cincinnati Reds) Third Baseman: Hans Lobert (Chicago Cubs) Shortstop: Larry Gardner (Boston Braves) Left Fielder: Johnny Bates (Boston Braves) Center Fielder: Tris Speaker (New York Giants) Right Fielder: Fred Snodgrass (Boston Braves) AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Sunday, October 27th, 1912: Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1912 American League Glove Wizard Awards tonight: Pitcher: Harry Krause (Detroit Tigers) Catcher: Ivey Wingo (Cleveland Naps) First Baseman: Dots Miller (Chicago White Sox) Second Baseman: Buck Herzog (Philadelphia Athletics) Third Baseman: Frank Baker (Boston Red Sox) Shortstop: Buck Weaver (St. Louis Browns) Left Fielder: Amos Strunk (Philadelphia Athletics) Center Fielder: Hub Northen (Boston Red Sox) Right Fielder: Chief Wilson (Philadelphia Athletics) Boston Second Baseman Chosen Best Rookie Monday, October 28th, 1912: The top National League rookie in 1912 was Boston second baseman Del Pratt. He's the latest winner of the National League Newcomer of the Year Award. During his first year in the league, the 24-year-old Pratt hit .370 with 238 hits, 4 home runs, 115 RBIs and 140 runs scored. He also walked 61 times on his way to a .424 on-base percentage. Cleveland Shortstop Wins AL Rookie of the Year Monday, October 28th, 1912: 1912 was a much better year than Tex McDonald expected. This spring he was overjoyed at just making the Cleveland roster. Not only did he make the team, he was the starting shortstop. Then it got even better. In his debut season, McDonald hit .373 with 209 hits in 561 at-bats, 4 home runs, 138 RBIs, 68 bases on balls and a .433 on-base percentage -- good enough numbers to be honored with the American League Newcomer of the Year Award. New York's Wiltse Gets Outstanding Pitcher Award Wednesday, October 30th, 1912: All the games have been played, all the votes have been counted, and the recipient of the prestigious National League Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1912 is Hooks Wiltse of the New York Giants. The superb relief artist fashioned a fine season with no relief appearances and no saves. Wiltse put together a 25-11 record with a 2.84 ERA. In 311 innings he fanned 95. Johnson Grabs AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Wednesday, October 30th, 1912: He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Walter Johnson performed like a veteran on the hill for the St. Louis Browns and walked away with the American League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process. The 24-year-old Browns star fashioned a 27-9 won-loss record in 1912 with a 2.86 ERA. In 330.1 innings of work and 38 starts, Johnson struck out 211 while giving up 337 hits and 92 walks. He held opposing batters to a .257 average. Speaker Named 1912 NL Outstanding Hitter Award Winner Thursday, October 31st, 1912: It's been a year of triumph for veteran Tris Speaker of the New York Giants as he hit his way to the 1912 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 24-year-old veteran compiled a .401 average and .500 on-base percentage by putting together 250 hits, 37 doubles, 13 triples, 13 home runs and 130 walks. He also scored 190 times and drove in 136 runs. Cobb AL Selection for 1912 Outstanding Hitter Award Thursday, October 31st, 1912: What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1912 Outstanding Hitter Award in the American League. It had already been a very special season for Washington's Ty Cobb, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake. All season long Ty Cobb gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .434 as he collected 261 hits, 53 doubles, 33 triples, 6 home runs and 126 RBIs. Accomplishments Cycles hit by Chief Wilson, Beals Becker, and Ted Easterly No Hitter by Jim Scott (Cincinnati) on 9/28 The leagues 14th and the first since the 1909 season. Four player recorded over 150 RBIs. Nap Lajoie 158, Beals Becker 156, Chief Wilson 153, and Jack Lelivelt 154. Ty Cobb 45 game hitting streak. He retired at the age of 35 and during his 941-game career batted .272, produced 6 home runs, 752 hits and 353 RBIs, while scoring 418 times. The legendary right fielder, surrounded by his joyful family, looked on as his plaque went up on the wall of fame at baseball's shrine to its greatest players. John also pitched from 1878 to 1887 with the St Louis Brown Stockings and Louisville Eclipse. After the induction ceremony, one of the Hall of Famers notorious for doctoring the ball was asked how did he pitch to Ward. "Greaseball, greaseball, greaseball, that's all I threw him... and he still hit them. He's the only player in baseball who consistently hit my grease. He saw the ball so well, I guess he could pick out the dry side." ![]() ![]() Pioneer Award Ed Cushman Inducted into Hall Of Fame Monday, November 4th, 1912: The North American BaseBall League made it official today. They honored one of the best pitchers to ever step on the mound. In recognition of a superlative career, Ed Cushman today joined the other legends in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. He was introduced by his favorite manager, who said, "To be a successful manager you have to have two things: faith in God above... and several pitchers like Ed Cushman on the mound." Baseball newest legend comes with great credentials. He entered the Hall with a 224-148 won-lost record, a 1.93 ERA, and 2166 strikeouts in 3298.2 innings. He retired from baseball at age 39.
