Toronto’s Len Lunde gets the Leafs on the board first late in the opening period. That goal holds up until the early moments of the third, when Murray Oliver ties it. Halfway through the third, Dave Keon gives the Habs the lead, and they would keep it tell the end. 2-1 Montreal wins game one. JP Parise gets Toronto on the board early in the first period of game two, but Jim Pappin responds a few minutes later. Montreal grabs the lead with 2nd period goals from Bob Nevin and Dickie Moore, and shut the game down in the third with a goal from Murray Oliver. 4-1 Montreal takes the 2nd game.

Marcel Paille allows only two goals in the first two games!

On home ice, the Leafs fall behind after a George Armstrong goal. That deficit widens to two when Claude Provost scores early in the third. A late JP Parise goal isn’t enough, and the Habs win it 2-1. They have a strangle hold on the series. The Leafs refuse to go down without a fight though, and jump out to a 3-0 lead after scoring three times in 4 minutes early in game four. Those few minutes matched their offensive output of the entirety of the series so far. Montreal responds. Carl Brewer gets kicked out of the game for an illegal check. This results in a 5 min PP for the Habs and they get 2 goals on that man advantage. Barclay Plager then tied the game late in the 2nd. The game ends up needing overtime. In the extra frame, Bobby Hull is the hero that extends the series, scoring his 6th goal. 4-3 Toronto.

Bobby Hull's playoff excellence has continued!

Montreal is ready for the season to end. They jump out in front 2-0, and lead 3-1 entering the third. These Leafs continue to fight though. Frank Mahovlich and Bobby Hull score 55 seconds apart in the final frame to force another overtime game. In overtime, Len Lunde redirects a Carl Brewer shot to give Toronto the win!! 4-3 Leafs stay alive. Back in Toronto for game 6, the Leafs have a new found confidence. It’s 2-0 Toronto after a period. It’s 4-0 after two periods. Toronto cruises to a easy 5-2 win, forcing the 3rd game 7 of the 1965 postseason.

Lunde's game 5 ot goal extended the series!

Game 7

Marcel Paille is out for game 7. He suffered an bruised hand in game 6 . Montreal turns to the seasoned vet, Don Head in their most important game of the season. Terry Sawchuk is listed as 4 flames hot.

Head starts for Montreal

Wow, 15 seconds in, Andy Bathgate finds a streaking Jean Ratelle, who finds himself behind the Montreal defense. He beats Head, and the Leafs lead 1-0! That goal woke up the Habs, who get the next 7 shots on net, but it’s Kent Douglas who gets the next goal, blasting a point shot past Head! 2-0 Toronto. Two minutes later, Ron Murphy hits the post, but Bobby Baun pinching in, bangs the rebound in!! 3-0 Toronto. Before the end of the period, the Leafs chase Don Head from the game with a goal from Len Ronson. 4-0 Leafs. Jack McCartan, whose played 2 NHL games, 4 years ago, takes over.

McCartan takes over in the Montreal net!

Former Leaf Yvan Cournoyer gets Montreal on the board in the 2nd. 4-1 Leafs still lead. Dave Keon then makes it 4-2! This is getting interesting. Jack McCartan stops all 13 shots he’s seen heading into the third. He’s kept Montreal in this game and given them a chance. That’s all you can really do in his position. Halfway through the third, Cournoyer does it again, cutting the once 4 goal lead to just one!!! With 5 minutes left, Dave Keon does it, Keon scores after the Leafs failed to clear the puck!! It’s 4-4!!!!

Keon ties the game for Montreal!

With all the momentum in the world, Montreal keeps up the pressure. George Armstrong finds himself alone in the slot, and goes top corner, beating Sawchuk! 5-4 Montreal with 4 minutes left! Toronto has no fight left in them. They completely blew this after Montreal completely blew this!! Habs win 5-4 and take the Stanley Cup!!

summary for the unbelievable game 7, which caps the most exciting and crazy postseason we have ever seen!

So ten titles for Canadiens, it will be interesting to see if they can match or break their real life record.

Actually, this is their 12th, and here is a rundown of the totals for each team.

1965 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are the skating leaders for the regular season

Here are the goalie leaders for the regular season

Here are the playoff scoring leaders

Toronto's Bobby Hull has has 213 points in 452 games. Not quite the ppg pace he's shown in the playoffs! In the postseason, he now has 45 points in 44 games, and in the last 2 years, he's accumulated 31 points in 24 games! Playoff performer!

Dave Keon wins the first Conn Smythe Award for playoff MVP with 18 points in 14 games, though I doubt anyone would have argued with Jack McCartan taking the award after being put into a 4-0 deficit of game 7, and not allowing a goal for 44 minutes!!

23 year old Jacque Laperriere is now a Norris trophy winner. That is making his trade from the Rangers for Bill Gadsby look even worse now! Trades like this are why the Habs are in the middle of a dynasty!

Ron Ellis is the third straight Bruin to win the rookie of the year! They haven’t been able to win much during that time though. It’s either a sign the Bruins are about to be back, or that rookies make almost no impact lately in the NHL!

Johnny Bower, Allan Stanley and Red Kelly all have decided to retire! Bower played 7 years in NY, and is the Rangers all time leader in shut outs, with 40. He spent the first half of his career in the Detroit system, battling with Marcel Pelletier for playing time. Bower retires as a 4 star goalie. A blow to the Rangers.

Stanley had a very productive career, and will be a member of the Hall of Fame. His final year, he was traded to Toronto, and despite being injured for the rest of the regular season, recorded 6 points, and a 63 game rating in his 12 playoff games.

Red Kelly also finished his career in Toronto, after what I think was an ill advised trade for young Yvon Cournoyer. Kelly had 61 points in 127 games as a Leaf, but helped them win the 64 cup! Kelly finished his career with 937 points, mostly with Montreal, where the Habs will retire his number!

A flurry of deals take place on the eve of the draft. 8 trades, which is probably the most ever, but nothing major happened, no picks were moved. So nothing to see here, lets get to the draft.

With the top pick, the Blackhawks select another goalie….No, kidding…..They select Franks younger brother, Pete Mahovlich. Chicago couldn’t select a goalie as no one was available. The NHL actually changed the entry draft age from 17 to 18 this year, and I guess as a result, only 12 players were available. Here is the whole draft. Pretty deep for the number of guys available.

Here is a look at Pete Mahovlich.

Boston really wanted an American, or their scouts vehemently disagreed with Central Scouting, or they're just stupid. Those are not exclusive.

Darkhorses again!!

Top Player

Stan Mikita and Dave Keon are tied in my scientifically perfect method of determining the most talented player in hockey. We have seen Mikita, so here is a look at Dave Keon.

Top Goalie

Chicago has the top goalie, one of the best players to ever play, and it's been a long time since they made the playoffs. The supporting cast is garbage!

1965-66 NHL Regular Season

Montreal names Jack McCartan their starting goalie as the season begins. McCartan plays 4 games and goes 4-0, with 2 shut outs!! The Habs then shock their fans by waiving McCartan! He is claimed by the NY Rangers, and sent to their AHL affiliate, the Baltimore Clippers, where he is right now!! What a roller coaster ride for the journeyman!

McCartan thought he finally made it, then he didnt!

In early December, Gordie Howe hits the 600 goal mark!! It’s a remarkable number, considering Maurice Richard still sits in 2nd place 110 goals behind him. Howe is still a 5 star guy at 37, and his averaging more then a point a game this season.

Howe celebrates goal 600!

Jean Beliveau just passed Elmer Lach in all time assists! Beliveau now has 664 assists. Lach retired with 659. Here is the all time assist leaderboard.

Chicago’s Phil Esposito has finally broken out after a few years of huge potential but middling results. The 23 year old, in his 6th season just set a career high for goals with his 23rd, at the halfway point!! Phil leads the league in goals after scoring a combined 41 the last 2 years. The emergence of Esposito has Chicago all the way up into……well….5th place. At least they are closer to 4th then last!

Chicago needs a high scoring Esposito!

Speaking of breaking out, Bobby Hull has finally put together a regular season that would match his last two playoffs. Hull has 27 goals and 56 points in 53 games on March 1st. That’s a fantastic year so far. At 27, Hull has finally lived up to the potential he has been flashing during the spring.

Final Standings

The Leafs have a pretty bad season, but still manage to sneak into the playoffs. The Rangers, without Johnny Bower, do not get the goaltending they have been accustomed to, and fall to last place.

I do find it weird, that even though Phil Esposito and Bobby Hull have huge break out years, their teams did not seem to capitalize on the performances. The Leafs barely make the playoffs, and the Blackhawks find themselves on the outside again!

30 year old Jack McCartan does not get that call up with the Rangers. He plays 30 games with the AHL Clippers, going 15-6-2, with a .917 save percentage.

1966 NHL Playoffs

Montreal vs Boston

Johnny Bucyk scores twice in the first period to tie the game after Montreal grabbed a 2-0 lead. Bruins with some early fightback to erase a deficit. There’s no more scoring, until the games final seconds. Johnny Bucyk completes his hattrick in dramatic fashion, scoring the winner with 9 seconds remaining. Boston wins game one, 3-2. Johnny Bucyk opens the scoring in game 2, his 4th already. Montreal needs to figure out a way to stop him. The Habs do score 30 seconds later, and find themselves a lead before too long, but Ron Ellis ties it by the end of the first period for Boston. The goals keep coming and early in the third, Bucyk scores again, which gives Boston a 5-3 lead. George Armstrong and Gilles Tremblay get huge goals for the Habs to tie it and force overtime. In OT, Bucyk does not score, by Kenny Wharram does! Boston wins it 6-5!!

Bucyk was shredding the Habs apart!

Game three looks like it would be all Montreal after a dominant 1st period and a 2-0 lead. The Bruins fought back though.Jacques Plante shut the door, and Norm Ullman tied it midway through the third. Another overtime is needed. In the extra frame, its Doug Barkley scoring his 2nd of the game for Boston, giving them the comeback 3-2 win, and a 3-0 series lead! Montreal looked like a defeated team in game four. Boston doubled them in shots, and Johnny Bucyk got his 6th goal of the playoffs. Still only a 1 goal game late, Dale Rolfe scores in the empty Montreal net, sealing the deal. 3-1 Bruins. They upset the Habs with a sweep!

Detroit vs Toronto

Bobby Hull scores early, because he’s amazing in the playoffs, but the Leafs Ron Murphy takes a 5 minute major and is ejected from the game. Pierre Pilote ties it, and the Wings score twice more on the PP to take a 3-1 lead. Toronto gets one back, but it’s not enough. Detroit wins game one, 3-2. Game two is a blowout. Gordie Howe gets 2 goals and an assist. Donnie Marshall scores twice as well. The Leafs go down hard, 6-1.

Ron Murphy's major started Detroit down the road to their 2-0 lead.

Donnie Marshall and Gordie Howe score 40 seconds apart to break open a scoreless draw in the 2nd period of game three. Detroit adds another for their 2nd three goal period of the series. Bobby Hull and Frank Mahovlich cut the lead to one, but Marshall would get another and the Wings score an insurance empty net goal. 5-2 Detroit. Toronto comes out hard in game four. They get 15 shots in the first, but find themselves trailing 2-1. Late in the 2nd, Gordie Howe gets a shorthanded goal, that pretty much ended any hope of a Leafs comeback. Detroit wins 5-1, and sweeps the Leafs.

The Red Wings have the advantage on paper. Gordie Howe is the best player in the series, and Pierre Pilote is still an excellent defenseman. Age might be a factor. The Red Wings are not young by any means, while the Bruins have a very young nucleus. Detroit is experienced, while Boston is not. The Bruins should have the goaltending advantage, but Seth Martin has had an excellent season in Detroit...

Game one of the finals sees all the scoring take place in the first period. Kenny Wharram and Ron Ellis gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Earl Ingarfield gets his first for Detroit on the power play, but that was it. Martin and Plante shut the door the rest of the way. 2-1 Boston wins the opener. Detroit responds in the 2nd game, giving themselves a 2-0 lead until Boston finally breaks the shut out half way through the third. Boston however had more left in them, and tie it with 3 minutes remaining on a Tommy Williams goal. We need overtime. 11 minutes in, Bruce MacGregor is the hero, getting his first, and the Bruins continue to look good in their upset bid. 3-2 Boston!

MacGregor scores the game two overtime winner!

Ron Ellis scores early in game three, his 4th, and it’s 1-0 Bruins. Gordie Howe ties it with his first goal of the finals, and Detroit gets the winner late, off the stick of Ron Stewart. The Wings avoids the disaster with a slim 2-1 win. Boston jumps out infront again with a 2 goal first period. Detroit responds and ties it in the 2nd. The two teams then exchanged goals in the third before Fred Stanfield scored the winner at the 18:09 mark, tying the series for Detroit. 4-3 is the final.

Howe has just one goal in the first four games!

Game five is just as tight as the first four games have been. Boston and Detroit exchange goals in the first period, then again in the 2nd period. Again, this time at the 18:12 mark, Charlie Burns of Detroit scores the late winner! 3-2 Red Wings. Detroit turns the tables in game 6 smelling victory. They go up 2-0 after a period, but Boston responds with two early 2nd period goals to tie it. The Wings keep coming, and Gordie Howe makes it 3-2 late in the period. Down 5-3, Boston gets goals from Ron Ellis and Dale Rolfe late in the third to avoid elimination and force another period to stay alive. In overtime, Paul Henderson finds the back of the net, which forces a game 7! 6-5 Boston!

Henderson forces a game 7!!

Game 7

Detroit controlled the early play, but at the half way mark of the first, Boston took over, and outshot the Wings 9-2 the remainder of the period. Both goalies were on their game though, and there is no score through one. 5 minutes into the 2nd, Norm Ullman out battles Pierre Pilote in the corner, he wins the puck, comes out in front, and finds a way to stuff the puck past Seth Martin. 1-0 Boston. Ullman’s goal is the only marker in the 2nd, and the Bruins hold the slight lead heading into the third.

Ullman has the Bruins infront!

Defense is dominating. Forwards can’t do much, and shots are very limited, but with 7 minutes remaining, Gordie Howe breaks through, and gets a shot through Jacques Plante. Howe gets his 8th, and it’s tied at 1. Gordie Howe gets a breakaway 2 minutes later, and is denied by Plante. The puck is quickly relayed down the ice by Boston, and Ron Ellis finds himself alone in front of Seth Martin. Ellis scores!! 2-1 Boston. Detroit can’t find another goal. Ellis wins it! 2-1 Bruins. They win the Stanley Cup!!

Boston vs. Detroit. Goes to 7. Every game decided by 1 goal. This would have to be the NHL version of the 1958 NFL Championship in this universe.

1966 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Here are the offensive leaderboards for the season.

Here are the goalie leaderboards for the season.

Here are the playoff leading scorers.

At age 38, Gordie Howe has won his 7th Hart trophy! It’s been 7 years since the last time Howe took the honor. Gordie had 73 points in 70 games, and led the Wings to game 7 of the finals.

Pierre Pilote also won his 6th Norris trophy. That number is incredible, as 34 year old defensemen are not supposed be this good. Pilote is arguably the best defenseman in NHL history at this point. It’s always hard to compare, especially in a text sim, but I would have to say Eddie Shore and Pilote are a clear 1/2 either way.

A two notable retirements. Bill Gadsby has called it a career. The 38 years old was a 2 time Norris trophy winner as the leagues best defenseman. After years of excellence in Montreal, he was dealt in a deal I criticized, to the NY Rangers. He spent 5 years in New York, but age caught up with him. Gadsby retires with 570 points in 1148 games.

Montreal’s Dickie Moore is hanging them up after a 17 year professional career. Moore spent this last season playing with the Canadiens farm team. At 35, Moore lost a lot, fairly fast. He holds the single season scoring record, and is the only player ever to hit 100 points! In his 868 games, Moore tallied 769 points. He also has an impressive 124 playoff points in 138 games!

The Canadiens have decided to retire Bill Gadsby’s number, and I have decided to honour Dickie Moore’s number!

The Rangers have hit the lottery. Bobby Orr is a member of the team after being drafted first overall. Orr’s offensive skill is ready to play right now, and produce a pretty productive player. We all know how good Orr was in real life. I’m really curious to see how he performs here. Can he take this franchise and turn them around?!

Chicago makes the obvious pick at 2, but ofcourse, it’s another goalie!! Ken Dryden is an insanely talented potential franchise goalie. Chicago now has Roger Crozier, Tony Esposito, Rogie Vachon and now, Ken Dryden, playing behind 34 year old Glenn Hall. Dryden and Esposito have star potential. Vachon and Crozier should be starters. MAKE SOME TRADES CHICAGO!! Esposito is now 23. He needs to play. His 138 games in the AHL over the last 5 years isn’t gonna help him anymore.

Ted Lindsay has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame! Terrible Ted is one of our greatest players. He is the 30th member of this elite group, the first since Maurice Richard’s induction in 1963, and just the third of the decade! Maybe I'm too hard on who i let in?

The Toronto Maple Leafs changed up their logo and uniforms. Here is their new look.

1966-67 NHL Regular Season

The New York Rangers have gone from worst to first. Yes, I’ve said that before, and it’s only December 1st. They are 12-6-1, and it isn’t even because of Bobby Orr. Orr played 3 early games in New York, grabbing 3 points, but has spend the last month in the AHL. The reason for New York’s hot start has to be Stan Mikita. The two time Hart Trophy winner, who is already a star, has scored 14 goals and added 14 assists in just 19 games! The Rangers are flying on offense right now. They have 3 other players averaging a point a game. Will this last, who knows, but I can’t imaging Orr stays down much longer, and when he comes up, it theoretically should make them better…right?

Mikita an early Hart Trophy Fav?

Montreal’s Bob Nevin suffered a fractured skull in car accident. Car accidents, BBQ mishaps and ladders seem to be really dangerous in the hockey world. Nevin is in all likelihood done for the season. He’s coming off a 80 point campaign, and had 30 points in 28 games this year. Nevin isn’t the type of player you can replace. He does way too much. Montreal's forward core is extremely deep though. If any team can survive this, it’s probably the Habs.

Nevin's season is over!

I have no idea what has happened, but Gump Worsley, after making 37 saves in a 3-2 loss to the NY Rangers on Dec 29th, retired from the NHL. Worsley had started 21 games for the Red Wings, and led the league in save percentage with a .915 mark. There was no news story, there is nothing in his career history. I have no idea why he decided to leave in the middle of the season.

Gump has called it a career!

The Montreal Canadiens have waived 34 year old, franchise wins leader Marcel Paille. The 34 year old won 254 games in Montreal, but played just 37 games over the last year and a half. Of all the teams that could have picked him, up, the Chicago Blackhawks claim Paille, because ofcourse!! He will join AHL affiliate, the St. Louis Braves roster of goalies. Asset management at its worst!

Chicago's goalies in the AHL!

As we pass the trade deadline, last years two finalists are on the outside looking in, and will need absolute miracles to qualify for the playoffs. Detroit and Boston are 13 and 18 points out of the postseason with 13 games left. Boston was the upset winner last year, but I don’t think anyone could imagine a 13-35 record for them this year!

Final Standings

Boston and Detroit do infact finish out of the playoffs. Detroit actually won just twice in their final 19 games. Age might be finally catching up to this group. Boston went on a little run to finish the year, but never actually came close.

Chicago has their best season in years! Infact it’s their first playoff appearance in 9 years!! Goalies at all positions must be their secret!!

What an incredible season for Dave Keon, 45 goals, and 96 points! That’s the 2nd highest point total ever!! Keon is in my opinion the best player in hockey, ratings wise, stats wise, performance wise. He’s spectacular!

Bobby Orr ends up playing 37 games for the Rangers in his rookie season. He plays 20:15 per game, and puts up 26 points. He’s improved quite a bit over the season, and is on his way to being special!
