Cards news: Sept. 28 -- Ankle injury will end season for infielder Ryan Mitchell

The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that a high ankle sprained will end the season for infielder Ryan Mitchell.
Mitchell, 26, sustained the injury during a 9-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sept. 25.
It was another solid season for Mitchell, who is in his second year as a starting infielder for the Cardinals.
He started the season playing mostly second base but moved to third when injuries and acquisitions forced a realignment of the infield.
In 147 games/141 starts, Mitchell hit .290 with a career-highs in home runs (14), RBIs (51) and runs scored (89).
He will be replaced on the roster by AAA callup Michael Bruenderman.
The 23-year-old 1B/3B hit .252 with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs in 111 games for the Redbirds.

MLB news: Oct. 3 -- Brewers clinch wild-card berth on final day of season

A 4-2 victory over the New York Mets allowed the Milwaukee Brewers to earn a wild card berth on the regular season's final day.
The Brewers finished the season 81-81, some 14 games in back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division.
But it was good enough to land them two games in front of the New York Mets for the final berth in the NL playoffs.
It is the second straight postseason trip for the Brewers -- who won the NL Central a year ago -- and the fourth in the last five seasons.
Milwaukee's last World Series trip came in 2030, when it lost to the Baltimore Orioles.
The Brewers have never won the World Series.
