Gus Mackey (1893-1896)

Gus Mackey was a member of the Potawatomi Tribe in Michigan. He first gained fame in Kansas in the early 1890s pitching for the Haskell Institute (a school for Native Americans), and then Lawrence and Topeka. After starting the 1893 season with Lawrence, he returned to Michigan to play with the Battle Creek club that was reported to be the Michigan State Champions for 1893. The picture of Mackey below comes from a photo of that team printed in the Battle Creek Enquirer on April 12, 1949 (pg. 10). When he was signed by Harrisburg in 1894, the Harrisburg Telegraph stated he was 6' tall, 190 lbs and a right hander. He pitched in the Texas-Southern League in 1895, and in the Atlantic League in 1896. Both seasons he was recruited by Ted Sullivan for those leagues. He retired from baseball after the 1896 season and returned home to Michigan.

"Gus Mackey, the Indian pitcher, has one curve that is especially effective. To all appearances it is about to pass three feet to the left of the plate, but takes a curve and passes diagonally across it. It is never hit, but is hard to throw." (Topeka State Journal, July 8, 1892: pg. 5)

He died February 3, 1958. His obituary gave his brith date as July 4, 1863, but Census records suggest a year of birth between 1864 and 1866.

Gene Garnell 1960

May as well show the picture, I'd think.

Since the cap looks to be a Milwaukee "M", I'd guess this is from Garnell's time with the Braves' franchise in the Florida East Coast League in 1964. (He had been with Montgomery in 1961, but I think they were using an Olde English "M" to match the Detroit "D".)

Duke Carmel 1955

Leon "Duke" Carmel, with the Portland Beavers, briefly, in 1961, per his Wikipedia page.

Duke, having started in the Cardinal chain, been traded to the Dodgers (for Joe Glenn) and sold back to St. Louis, was once more traded to LA in mid-May. (For Joe Koppe, this time.)

So he didn't get to spend much time in the Rose City, finishing out the year with Spokane. But here's a pic, anyhow.

Mardie Cornejo 1973

Drafted in the 3rd round in 1970 by the Senators, Cornejo turned them down (and subsequent draftings in the 2nd and 3rd round of the supplemental drafts) to complete his education at Miami (OH) University.

…whereupon he was drafted by the Mets in the 21st round. Oops?

He only got one season at Big Shea (despite a fine record of 4-2, 2.45 143 ERA+), so, for a while, his ML photos were hard to find until Topps Vault provided them in 2015.

Until then, the Pitcher's Pack had used a head shot from his 1977 days at Tidewater. Here's a full pic:

Tom Casey 1917

From the current RMY auction, here's Bay Area native (b. San Mateo, d. San Bruno) Tom Casey, fresh from the 'Frisco sandlots (after a brief failure with Vernon three yeas earlier) trying to win a spot with the defending champion Cincinnati Reds at Spring Training 1920.

Tom doesn't make the team, but he does get about half a season's work with Terre Haute in the 3-I League before heading back west.

Ted Waring/O'Neill (1913 Federals)

I found a photo in the Library of Congress website for catcher O'Neill, of the St. Louis Federals club in 1913. The player referred to as O'Neill for the season in the box scores was in fact catcher Ted Waring (1909-1917), playing under an alias. The photo, while clearly labeled O'Neill, looks to be the uniform for the 1914 St. Louis Federal League club. There is a photo of Harry Kuepper in the archives in the same uniform, also labeled as 1913, but I have seen the same image elsewhere labeled as 1914.

So my question is whether this photo is indeed Ted Waring, and if so, is it really from 1913? If not Ted Waring, is there any idea who it might be?

As a followup, the Federals had a played identified as J.L. O'Neil, a semi-professional from DeSoto, in camp in March and April of 1914. He stuck around with the club at least as long as their first road trip to Indianapolis, per the St. Louis Star and Times (April 23, 1914). I'm guessing this is who is the photo, ot Ted Waring (aka O'Neill) from the 1913 season.

Charles (Dutch) Sapp (1913-1914)/Otto Blake

In 1911, the St. Louis Browns gave a player named Otto Blake a tryout in training camp in the spring. He played with Lancaster in 1910. He did not make the club, instead being sent to Mansfield for 1911. No player named Blake appears with either club in those seasons in Baseball-Reference, but there is a C.O. Blake with Zanesville in 1911 and 1912.

In 1913, Charles "Dutch" Sapp appears playing for Terre Haute and Steubensville before signing on with the Pittsburgh club in the Federal League (that season a minor league). In researching Dutch Sapp, I found the entry for his grave on FindAGrave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...es-sumner-sapp). There is a brief memory from a relative, noting that when he was a young man playing professional baseball, he played under the name of Otto Blake, so his mother would not know.

Below is a photo of Charles Sapp from his FindAGrave website, compared to a photo of Otto Blake published in the St. Louis Star on March 2, 1911. Charles Sapp, meet Otto Blake.

Any known photos of John C. Fuller. Played for the Seattle Pilots Arizona Instructional league in 1968 and in the Padres system in 1969. Thank you in advance and any response.

Lee Craig 1926

Frankly, Lee Craig's pitching stats at Oklahoma City of the Western League don't look so great, and apparently he wasn't even in OB in 1929. Yet come 1930, here he is wearing one of those new Yankees uniforms with the numbers on the back, and being photographed by Thorne Studios, either at Spring Training or a random try out.

It was good enough get him a slot at Albany in the Eastern League…not that he excelled there, either.

Still, better than nothing. (Pic courtesy of RMY July Auction)
