WP: Orvel Overall LP: Dick Donovan No Home Runs GAME NOTES Player of the Game: H. Steinfeldt Ballpark: Comiskey Park Weather: Partly Cloudy (14 degrees), wind blowing in from right at 9 mph Start Time: 7:00 pm Time: 3:05 Attendance: 10508 1908 Cubs win series 3-1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Cubbies win the cross town series A series that was deemed the "small ball" series came to a close after four games. The old time 1908 Chicago Cubs left no doubt destroying the Go Go Sox on their own field 15-3. Harry Steinfeldt drove in three runs including a bases clearing double in the 5th inning that knocked hard luck starter Dick Donovan out of the game. The Cubs collected a total of 21 hits and proved that a pile of basehits is just as good as smashing a long one. The Cubs in fact hot no home runs over the four game series, and even more impressive didnt win with their dominant pitching. The turning point had to be game one where the Cubs came back from an eight run deficit to set the tone of the series. So in this historic race the North Siders are one up on the South Siders. SERIES MVP P Andy Coakley 2 W 0.00 ERA |

1981 Montreal Expos vs 1954 New York Giants ![]() 1981 Montreal Expos Record: 60-48 Finish: Lost to Dodgers in NLCS Manager: Dick Williams Key Players: Tim Raines (OF), Gary Carter (C), Andre Dawson (OF) Team Batting: .246 Team ERA: 3.30 Home Runs: 81 Snapshot: In a strike shortened season this team came one game away from making it to the world series and in essence was the best team the franchise ever had. A very fast outfield and balanced offense allowed this team to take advanatge of the carpet at Olympic Stadium. The pitching stff isnt the greatest but does get bolstered with Jeff Reardon coming out of the bullpen. ![]() 1954 New York Giants Record: 97-57 Finish: Won 54 World Series championship Manager: Leo Durocher Key Players: Willie Mays (OF), Johnny Antonelli (SP), Don Mueller (OF) Team Batting: .264 Team ERA: 3.09 Home Runs: 186 Snap shot: Always a good team, the 54 Giants finally went all the way led by the beseball God known as Willie Mays. Mays was so good at the Polo Grounds in center field that he often times stopped opponent rallies just with his presence. The Giant pitching staff was also utilized well by Durocher where a number of men had career years. Probable Matchups Game 1: Steve Rogers (12-8, 3.42 ERA) vs Johnny Antonelli (21-7, 2.30) Game 2: Bill Gullickson (7-9, 2.80) vs Ruben Gomez (17-9, 2.88) Game 3: Scott Sanderson (9-7, 2.95) vs Sal Maglie (14-6, 3.26) |

The stunned Giants knew they were in some trouble when Andre Dawson took Johnny Antonelli deep for a two run home run in the very first inning. Before they knew it the home side were down seven runs and really had to buckle down to get back into it. The Giants did well and recovered from their early shock closing the gap. Down by three runs in the ninth the defining moment of the game happened. With closer Jeff Reardon on the mound the Expos looked to close out game 1. With runners on the corners and no one out the Giants had the tying run at the plate and were thinking rally. Dusty Rhodes singled to right center field, and Willie Mays, thinking he could make it decided to take 3rd base..but Andre Dawson turned and gunned the ball to third with a perfect strike and shocked Willie Mays to get him. This basically ended the rally and the game....and left the Giants wondering where these guys came from. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 02-14-2010 at 02:19 PM. |

WP: Ruben Gomez LP: Bill Gullickson S: Hoyt Wilhelm Home Runs: None ![]() GAME NOTES Player of the Game: R. Gomez Ballpark: Polo Grounds IV Weather: Clear skies (33 degrees), wind blowing out to center at 12 mph Start Time: 7:00 pm Time: 2:25 Attendance: 10955 SERIES TIED AT 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GIANTS BOUNCE BACK BEHIND GOMEZ The Polo Grounds was a much happier place today during game two as the Giants bounced back with a strong pitching effort from Ruben Gomez and a solid defensive performance. Gomez went 8 strong innings shuting out the Expos and pitching with a confidence that was truly needed by his teamates. Hoyt Wilhelm made the fans sweat in the 9th, but did close the door.
Expo starter Bill Gulickson didnt do very poorly himself going the distance and allowing only two runs. The Giants scored both their runs in the third inning, Ray Katt and Hank Thompson drove in the runs after Willie Mays had set the table with a lead off double in the inning. So the series is tied going north to Olympic Stadium where anything can happen. |

WP: Scott Sanderson LP: Sal Maglie S: Jeff Reardon Home Runs: Mon:W. Cromartie (0, 1st Inning off S. Maglie, 1 on, 2 outs) ![]() GAME NOTES Player of the Game: W. Cromartie Ballpark: Stade Olympique Weather: Clear skies (6 degrees), wind blowing out to center at 13 mph Start Time: 7:00 pm Time: 2:28 Attendance: 41730 81 EXPOS LEAD SERIES 2-1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The back and forth nature of this series continues as the home team pleases the capacity crowd at Olympic Stadium with a good win that they solidified in the bottom of the 8th with 2 insurance runs. By far the man of this game was Expo's outfielder William Cromartie who hit a home run in the 1st and had the 2 run triple in the 8th. Willie Mays on the other hand has really struggled in the series, after three games he is only 2 for 13 with no runs driven in. The Expos will look to close it out at home and complete the first real upset of this competition. |

WP: Jim Hearn LP: Ray Burris Home Runs: NYG:D. Williams (0, 5th Inning off B. Lee, 1 on, 1 out) GAME NOTES Player of the Game: D. Williams Ballpark: Stade Olympique Weather: Clear skies (9 degrees), wind blowing out to left at 18 mph Start Time: 7:00 pm Time: 3:14 Attendance: 41914 SERIES TIED AT 2 ================================================== ============== With their backs against the wall a World Champion wont fold easily. The Giants came out with a lot of fight in them to take control of game 4 and send the series back to the Polo Grounds for the decisive game 5. Wille Mays had his best game of the series and Davey Williams went 4-5 on the night driving in four runs. Ray Burris for the Expos seemed to fold under the pressure and couldnt settle down, he let up 4 in the first inning alone, making any sort of comeback a steep climb. Nothing more exciting then a final deciding game, it will be Kenny Rogers against Johnny Antonelli. |

With the series between the 81 Expos and 54 Giants tied at two. The deciding game 5 came down to the bottom of the ninth, where the Expos held a 2-1 lead and Jeff Reardon on the mound. Here is the play by play...
The mold was broken for an outstanding playoff series s two teams that wanted to win so badly battled it out down to the last out of the last inning of the last game. The Giants were the favored but this series in no way should have had a loser. The final game was full of great drama and great pitching as Steve Rogers pitched his heart out for 7 innings and left with his team ahead by a single run. "We wouldnt let ourselves even think about losing" said Willie Mays who truly can thank his teamates for moving on. In the ninth Reardon couldnt hold the fragile lead, as the first two men got on base and finally Don "the magician" Mueller came through with the dramatic hit and the dramatic end to a great series. Giants fans stormed the field at the Polo Grounds to celebrate their win, reminisint of another dramatic last ining win, back sometime in 1951. "They tore our hearts out". sid Tim Raines after the loss. The Expos could be accused of many things, but lacking heart definately wasnt one of those things. 2000 New York Mets vs 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Overviews and Summary ![]() ![]() 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Record: 98-55 Finish: Won 1955 World Series over Yankees Manager: Walter Alston Team ERA: 3.68 Team AVG: .271 Home Runs: 201 Key Players: Duke Snider (OF), Don Newcombe (SP), Jackie Robinson (2B) The 'bums' are one of the most beloved teams in baseball history. After a long stretch of losing the big games this team put it all together to take it all in 1955 and create a buzz that is still talked about in legends today. The stars are there from Campanella to Hodges, but it was this teams ability to come up big when it counted and to win like a team that made it great. 2000 New York Mets Record: 94-68 Finish: NL Champs; Lost World Series to Yankees Manager: Bobby Valentine Team ERA: 4.16 Team AVG: .263 Home Runs: 198 Key Players: Mike Piazza (C), Al Leiter (SP), Edgardo Alfonzo (2B) No one expects much from this Met's team that seemed to overachieve in 2000. Still with Turk Wendell and Armando Benitez the Met bullpen is strong. Much will fall on the shoulders of Mike Piazza who will hope he see's something good to hit. Like them or not, this Mets team did win the pennant and play well when they had too. This is a team that comes through in the clutch and wins the close games. Pitching matchups Game 1: Mike Hampton (15-10, 3.14 ERA) vs Don Newcombe (20-5, 3.20) Game 2: Al Leiter (16-8, 3.20) vs Carl Erskine (11-8, 3.79) Game 3: Glendon Rusch (11-11, 4.01) vs Johnny Podres (9-10, 3.95) Last edited by Nick Soulis; 02-15-2010 at 05:16 PM. |

Argh! Thought the Expos had it. Great series.
Loved the 2000 Mets, but the truth is that team - with Payton, Agbayani and Timo as the outfield - had no business making the World Series. One note...it was Rusch's one good year, but despite a slightly lower ERA, Rick Reed was the real #3 on that staff. |

METS AND HAMPTON STUN BUMS Game 1 WP- Mike Hampton LP - Don Newcombe![]() Mike Hampton has always had a bulldog mentality and it came through in game 1 of this series against the favored 55 Dodgers. The Mets stunned the Dodgers 7-1 in what is becoming a trend of the underdog teams doing much better then expected. Hampton went the distance allowing 7 hits and only one run for the win. The Dodgers and Mets had a tight game going tied at one until the eigth inning when New York put 4 on the board. Rickey Henderson had a teo ru double and Robin Ventura a two out hit, chasing Don Newcombe from the game. Newcombe had been very tough up until that point, having struck out 11. Now like the Expos the Mets have a chance to really take control of a major favorite, the Dodgers are likely to be desperate in game 2 but they have been there before. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COMEBACK DODGERS DONT QUIT AND TIE SERIES ![]() A wild game that only Ebbetts Field could provide saw the Brooklyn Dodgers come back down from six runs to win this ball game 8-7 in 10 innings and tie the series. The winning run was driven in by Jackie Robinson who singled of Armando Benitez to score Don Hoak.
Edardo Alfonso homered twice in this game and drove in 4 runs. Fonzi was in a groove and the Mets may have relaxed with their big lead and Al Leiter on the mound. With runners on the corners and 2 outs in the 8th the Dodgers but together 5 hits in a row including a hit batsman and tied the game knocking a tired Leiter from the game. Bobby Valentine was late on the hook. So pulling the series out of the fire the Dodgers are alive and well as the series shifts over to Shea. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

METS ON THE BRINK, ALL ON THE LINE IN GAME 4 ![]() The underdog Mets are one game away from pulling off the first huge upset of this competition as they hold a 2-1 game lead going into game 4 at home. Still we have seen the 81 Expos in the same position and they just couldnt finsih it off but lost the last 2 games. In Game 3 it was another comeback, the Dodgers were winning for most of the match behind the effort of starter Johnny Podres. Gil Hodges and Sandy Amoros helped the visitors get off to a 5-2 lead. going into the 7th where the Mets cut the lead to two. In the 8th inning pinch hitter Melvin Mora came through with a two RBI hit and the Mets hung 3 on the board against young lefty Sandy Koafax. Armando Benitez this time closed the door and the Mets are starting to believe. Glendon Rusch will try and give them the win in Game 4. Pee Wee Reese told reporters as he was walking off the field, "Were going back to Ebbetts field, this series is just starting." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOT TODAY AT SHEA; BROOKLYN TAKES GAME 4 ![]() With seemingly all baseball experts rooting for them the 55 Dodgers went into Shea Stadium for Game 4 and played a very strong mistake free game to keep the home team's champagne on ice. Emergency starter Billy Loes came to the rescue for the Bums with an effort that will be remembered, Loes got out of numerous jams and only let up 2 runs even though he allowed 12 hits.
A Todd Zeile error opened the door for the Dodgers in the 3rd inning and they plated two thanks to a single with 2 men on from Jackie Robinson. The Mets came on late but the Dodger defense was excellent with Pee Wee Reese making numerous difficult plays and Carl Furillo making the catch of the day in right field to save an extra base hit. Brooklyn just wanted it more today. Everything on the line again in a game 5 back at Ebbetts field. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOT TO BE DENIED BUMS MOVE ON ![]() Sandy Amoros had a relatively short major league career, but one thing he did have alot of is the flair for the dramatic during a big game. Amoros hit a three run home run in the 4th inning off of Mike Hampton, enough to give a comfortable lead to the Dodgers, who held on for the win and the series by a score of 7-5. Carl Furillo added a 2 run double in the 2nd inning and the Dodgers clearly had the worried and slumping Mets on the ropes. The Mets looked deflated after their game 4 loss at Shea, and a lack of confidence showed on the field as Mike Hampton didnt have his best stuff. So like the 54 Giants the Dodgers barely move on which is all anyone will remember. Roy Campenella gets the deserved series MVP award for his great handeling behind the plate and timely hitting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GAME 5
