AL Best Fielders for 1872 Selected
Thursday, October 24th, 1872: What does it take to win a Glove Wizard Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the American League consists of:

Pitcher: Rynie Wolters (Philadelphia Athletics)
First Baseman: Everett Mills (St. Louis Brown Stockings)
Second Baseman: Chick Fulmer (Baltimore Canaries)
Third Baseman: Mike McGeary (Baltimore Canaries)
Shortstop: Francis Abercrombie (Baltimore Canaries)
Left Fielder: Ned Cuthbert (St. Louis Brown Stockings)
Center Fielder: Paul Hines (Baltimore Canaries)
Right Fielder: Herb Worth (Baltimore Canaries)

Wolters excelled with an impressive 28-6 record in 33 starts. In 302 innings he yielded 445 hits and 23 walks, while striking out 20 and compiling a fine 2.26 ERA.

1872 First Year Draft

NABL News: First-Year Player Draft
Friday, November 1st, 1872: In the few hours remaining until the draft begins today, GMs across North American BaseBall League will be penned up in their offices, making hurried last minute notes about each of their most coveted prospects. Fearful that things won't go as planned, many of them are still playing through the myriad scenarios that are all but certain to unfold in the high-stakes lottery of drafting. Scouting teams play devil's advocate, argue strategy back and forth and try to help their general manager gain the strategic upper hand, even though they know a lot of what transpires today will come down to being in the right place at the right time. BNN projects that the top picks of the draft will be:

1. John Sheppard, 27 year-old catcher out of college.
2. Joe Gerhardt, 17 year-old second baseman out of high-school.
3. Jack Manning, 18 year-old right fielder out of high-school.
4. Joe McDoolan, 27 year-old reliever out of college.
5. Jim Britt, 16 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
6. Henry Kessler, 25 year-old catcher out of college.
7. Len Lovett, 20 year-old reliever out of college.
8. John Greason, 21 year-old reliever out of college.
9. Jim Devlin, 23 year-old first baseman out of college.
10. Ed Stratton, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college.

1873 Season

50 games: 25 home and 25 away

Cleveland Blue at Philadelphia Athletics
Tuesday April 1st 1873
Philadelphia 6 Cleveland 5
Barnes and the Athletics pick up where they left off. Bill Boyd goes 5-5 and Ross extends his hitting streak to 63 games.

Boyd 5-5 for Athletics
Tuesday, April 1st, 1873: If just anyone could go out and hit a baseball, big dollar contracts wouldn't exist. But they can't, so the good hitters get the big bucks. Bill Boyd showed how it's done as he went 5 for 5 against the Cleveland Blues and helped the Philadelphia Athletics beat them 6-5.

Saturday April 5th 1873
Cleveland 6 Philadelphia 2
Ross Barnes goes 4-5 in a losing effort. Four run 1st lifts Blues.

Consecutive-Game Hit Streak Continues for Clapp
Wednesday, April 9th, 1873: Win, lose or draw -- John Clapp just keeps on getting base hits -- game after game after game. He has now stretched his hitting streak to 30 games. The Boston Red Stockings catcher picked up 1 hit in 5 at-bats today, but it wasn't enough to win the game. His club was defeated 6-5 by the Chicago White Stockings at 23rd Street Grounds.

Hines's Hit Streak Soars to 25 Games
Wednesday, April 9th, 1873: Baltimore's 18-year-old center fielder Paul Hines has had a fine run at the plate over the last few weeks. His consecutive-game hitting streak has reached 25 games now. Today Hines extended the streak by going 1-5 against Brown Stockings pitching. The streak has brought him a degree of attention that he has tried to deflect. Hines always prefers to talk about his teammates' accomplishments rather than his own. After the Canaries 3-2 triumph over St. Louis at Newington Park he downplayed his part in the victory.

Friday April 11th 1873

Cleveland 9 Philadelphia 8
6 Run 9th in not enough for Athletics. Ross Barnes comes up empty.

Blues Chill Barnes's Hot Streak
Friday, April 11th, 1873: It was the best of both worlds for the Cleveland Blues today at Jefferson Street Grounds as they defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 9-8 and also ended Ross Barnes's 64-game hitting streak. The 22-year-old Philadelphia second baseman failed to get a hit in 5 at-bats.

Harry Wright Calls it a Career
Friday, April 11th, 1873: Ending weeks of speculation, Harry Wright announced his retirement today. The Brown Stockings right fielder has been reportedly weighing the decision since last year, sources close to Wright say.
