Rockies, Reds strike blockbuster deal

Colorado Rockies Receive - Cincinnati Reds Receive
SP Mat Latos - OF Carlos Gonzalez / SP Jordan Lyles
10-7 3.76 ERA 122.0 IP 0.95 WHIP 125 K (ML) - .284 AVG .816 OPS 13 HR 45 RBI 8 SB (ML) / 8-7 5.40 ERA 98.1 IP 1.56 WHIP 58 K (ML)

This was a huge deal which I am incredibly excited about. We knew from the beginning of the season that pitching was the problem for this team, and it has certainly proved that up until this point. Currently, our squad is ranked 13th in the National League in starters ERA (4.46), and 15th in the NL in bullpen ERA (4.39). The deal a few weeks ago that brought in Seth Maness helped to increase our pitching depth going forward; but this deal provided us with an ace for the future. 26-year old Mat Latos will be a huge boost to our current Rockies pitching staff. Jhoulys Chacin and (especially) Jorge De La Rosa have struggled down the stretch, and the hope is that Latos will be able to bring an end to some of those pitching struggles. So far in 2014 Latos is 10-7 with a 3.76 ERA. Latos also has an impressive 0.95 WHIP and a highly productive 3.00 FIP.

The big name heading back to the Reds is 28-year old outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. I've had moving Gonzalez as an option for a while now, mainly due to his high future contract hit; he is due $53,000,000 over the next 3 years. Additionally, Gonzalez has been relatively expendable on this high-powered offensive squad. Prior to leaving, Gonzalez was ranked 6th on the team in batting average (.284), 3rd in home runs (13), and 6th in runs batted in (45). 23-year old Jordan Lyles, on the other hand, was the guy the Reds wanted to complete the deal; that was an easy decision for me to make. Lyles has struggled all year as a starter, illustrated most of all by his sky-high 1.56 WHIP. Moving Lyles will now allow either Brett Anderson or Maness to step-up as the fifth starter in the rotation.

As mentioned above, this move makes sense both strategically and fiscally. Latos is due $7,500,000 for the rest of this year and will be eligible for arbitration come the end of the season. However, early indication is that we will be able to secure him for less than we would be paying Gonzalez over the next few years.

July 2014 Rockies Update

This was a real tough month to handle. After starting the month on a 9-3 clip going into the all-star break, we completely blew a tire in the back half of the month. Post all-star break we were 4-9, including an abysmal 1-8 record against the Nationals and Pirates, two of our main competitors in the wild card race. Hopefully the late addition of Mat Latos will help this team going forward. So far he has only made one start as a Rockie, but it was a well pitched victory against the Cubs.

Colorado Rockies Major Transactions
July 9th, 2014: Traded 22-year old minor league 1B Jordan Patterson to the St. Louis Cardinals for 25-year old P Seth Maness
July 18th, 2014: Purchased the contract of Dan Winkler from Triple-A Colorado Springs
July 23rd, 2014: Traded 28-year old OF Carlos Gonzalez and 23-year old SP Jordan Lyles to the Cincinnati Reds for SP Mat Latos

Yeah they've had a great season, thanks to one of the top pitching staffs in the league. A.J. Burnett has been doing a grat job for them

How did you get fictional players in the draft from real colleges/high schools in the first season? did you use some sort of feeder league database?

I like what I'm seeing, this is a good dynasty. Keep it up.

And it looks like Lee has too. Can I see Burnett's stats?

Basically what I did was follow this thread:

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...eur-draft.html

About half way down it explains it. I just set the draft pool to be released 75 days prior to the draft, when it came out I went to commissioner mode, deleted all the players, and then switched the settings back to release the pool 30 days before the draft. When the new pool came out they were all fictional, with stats.

Thanks for following, and I like the avatar, I just graduated from UConn this year.

Thanks for following along! The Red Sox and orioles have had quite the battle in the AL East, and the Pirates, cardinals and reds have had a similar one in the NL Central. Pirates continue to be great, which is unfortunately hurting my chances of landing a wild card spot this year.

Absolutely but I'm away from my laptop right now. Next time I get a shot I'll upload some Philly stats for you

Here are some stats for you:

Burnett has been real poor his last four starts (3 of the 4 he has given up 4+ ER). Despite that poor run he still has a pretty good season in the works, although his current WHIP is quite high.

Lee on the other hand has been excellent and would be a strong contender for the Cy Young if he didn't miss time to injury.

Hamels has also performed well for the Phils

Both the starter and bullpen ERA are currently 3rd in the NL, not shabby at all.

Updates on this will likely be slow going forward. For now, I'm on vacation, but afterwards I find myself getting stressed managing one team. I'm incredibly competitive, so even losing in a video game makes me pretty angry. I think I may come up with a new dynasty idea where I will act as the commissioner rather than a GM for any team.

We shall see..
