This shows a workaround for minecraft, which I believe uses open gl 2 - make sure you are NOT using the WDDM drivers. |

wellllllll
great news! I was able to get this working using the work around that Wolf posted early on in this thread! Initially it sounded like one of the many solutions I tried before but when i read more into last night, it was slightly different. Thanks to everyone for trying to help out. I wish i would have tried Wolf's suggestion as soon as he posted it before dismissing it as something I'd tried before but at that point i was pretty exasperated. Also thanks to Brad for reaching out as well. |

Hurray! I couldn't figure out why that didn't work for you. Now all you need to do is to hand select your Windows updates so that you don't overwrite the fix.
Enjoy the game!

EDIT: Heh, it's interesting that the article, on a web site that I regularly visit believe it or not, linked to this other one of theirs: Is Windows Update Broken? Old news, yes, but definitely news at the time. Notice it says things like "Microsoft pulled this update" after the issues became widespread and known, but it does not say if subsequent updates corrected the bad ones. Rather, one had to Google the 'net for homegrown remedies. And, for every major calamity that becomes common knowledge, who knows how many are minor issues such as the one that apparently befell Go Tribe?

Hell. In the public interest, all you young folks out there, Wolf is right. Get the updates for Windows (and other programs like Adobe and Java) and have them done automatically.
I am a jaded old technophobe whose past bad experiences should not be used to judge today's standards of good I.T. practices. The relatively minor inconveniences that you may avoid by following my example could be vastly outweighed by the grim consequences of not getting timely security updates for your operating system.

Automatic updates do absolutely nothing to protect a pc of any kind from an ignorant user. I've seen it time and time again. User sees a fabulous and unbelievable offer on facebook. User gives away beau-coup personal info to fabulous offer giver. User wonders why all of their friends and family are now receiving spam in their email and why their pc is so slow all of the sudden. I've seen pc's that were absolutely crammed so full of malware and spyware that they became unusable, but windows was up to date and avg doing it's thing in the bottom right corner.
If good advise is the motive here, then tell the truth. Automatic updates can screw things up. Most of the time they work just fine, until they don't. If you choose to let Microsoft or Java or Adobe do as they see fit with your pc, then at minimum at least ensure a restore point is created before ANY update of ANYTHING is done. Even more preferable, would be a manual backup of the registry(see CCleaner), along with backups of important personal files before updates occur. Any anti-virus that claims real time protection is snake oil, pure and simple. The best anti-virus available is an educated user. If it sounds to good to be true, it is. That being said, even the wisest and wariest user sometimes stumbles into something they shouldn't have. In this case, malwarebytes free version in conjunction with super-antispyware free version will remove almost anything. These tools run when you tell them to run. They do not consume resources with real time monitoring. In the event of a serious infection, you will most likely need another pc to access the internet to research and download necessary utilities. Having a second barebones pc as a backup is a good idea. |

Glad to see you got it done. I have a bad feeling that the more 3D/Open GL junk they implement, the more of us will have to resort to these kinds of workarounds. I just hope the workarounds keep working!
