Ruth was arguably the best pitcher in the American League from 1915-1917, when he didn't do anything else. When he started playing the outfield, his pitching results declined. He's really a data point that you can't do both successfully at the same time. Ohtani is only hitting because the Angels promised him he could so they could sign him. It will eventually become a distraction that will impact his pitching results. He is a ton of fun to watch, but he'll have to choose, or he will have the choice made for him by injury or ineffectiveness, probably no later than spring training next year.
