That way, you would always have a chance to buy the card you need for a mission. And the open ended auction would probably help them generate more PP sales, which would make them more money.

I would say that, as described, over time you would have too many of the top cards put out there in the market and it would speed up the process of top teams having the same lineups. I think the team is on the right track of having some of the top cards in packs, some in missions, and some in tournaments. The quality of cards may have been a little too heavily skewed to the missions in this cycle, but I as a F2P player I found it to be engaging throughout the season.
