Tony Jaeger of the Sunbirds will miss the season with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. Also, Sky Chiefs LF Tyler Michelson will retire at the end of the campaign. Why? Because he's 38, and apparently, 38 is too old to play in his opinion. GAMES Cleveland 0-2 Boston- Jordan Vasquez tosses 5-hitter Ft. The Evening Sports Paper for Fans Saturday, April 12th, 1958 I know this came a little late, but this is the Baseball Times, the online journal that keeps track of what's going on in the NBL. If there's any good news, it's in the Baseball Times. TOP NEWS REPORT: ALBUQUERQUE PUTS UP 12 IN FIRST INNING, BEAT MIAMI 15-6 Today, in Albuquerque, a crowd of just under 5,000 saw the Loggerheads host the Legion for game 2 of the 4-game set. Miami had a solid start with a 2-run homerun by Rich Corley. It didn't matter, because the Loggerheads went on what may be their best inning of the season. They stoked the Miami pitcher for 8 runs, then with the next guy pitching, they got 4 more runs in the same inning for a combined 12 runs in the 1st, the most out of any team so far this year. Both teams combined for 14 runs, also the biggest inning in baseball. In the 3rd, with Albuquerque's Jon Lucero at the plate, he looked at a called strike three that appeared to be out of the zone. He threw a fit, complaining to the home plate ump that the pitch was a little outside, then pointed his bat where he thought the ball was. Obviously, you can't do that, so the ump proceeds to eject him from the game. Boy, is Jon mad. He started arguing with the ump, kicking dirt up, and getting in his face before returning to the dugout, and eventually, the showers. Did he get his money's worth? Maybe. The Loggerheads went on to score 3 more runs and win the game 15-6. Miami is now 2-7, good for last in the ABC East, a whole 4 games behind 1st place Boston and Philadelphia. Earlier today, the league office thought that what Lucero did was not cool and suspended the second baseman for 2 games. In an interview with the Times after the game, he said that "I was disciplined for spraying him. I guess I used too many words with Ps and Ss." |

April 12, 1958 McCAFFERTY GETS DIAGNOSIS ON INJURY Tonight, the El Paso Indians reported that 2B Mike McCafferty is out for 4 weeks. He was injured on April 9th against Memphis. In the 3rd inning, he led off against Vespasiano Belloi. He worked the count to 1-2, and was then clobbered in the head with a fastball. He instantly went down and was out cold when he got to the ground. Trainers immediately called for a stretcher, and McCafferty was carted off to the applause of 16,000 people at Russwood Park. He was taken to the hospital, and had tests done on him. Today, he got his diagnosis, a concussion, and is now out for 4 weeks. He has been placed on the injured list. Up to this point, he has hit .227 with 0 homers and 1 RBI. Sunday, April 13th, 1958 MUNOZ OUT FOR SEASON WITH BROKEN KNEECAP Today, the San Jose Fusion announced the injury of Gerardo Munoz, the left fielder. They announced that he has a broken kneecap and will miss the season and possibly the playoffs. The expected recovery time is 6 months. He was injured on April 11th against the Tulsa Blue Chips. In the 5th inning, he hit a liner to right center. When he slid into second, his kneecap collided with the base, breaking it. He called for time, which the second base ump gave, as he began screaming in agony and pain. Trainers came out to see the issue, and took one look at his kneecap, which was red and bruised. He got substituted at second while he went to the hospital. After multiple X-rays, the answer was given. The X-rays show that the kneecap was completely ripped in half, and it caused a lump along with the red bruise. Munoz was not happy with the injury, but he was relieved when he found out that it doesn't require surgery. He says that "I don't like surgery because I'm scared that the doctors left something in my body, like a pair of tweezers or something." NANKIVELL'S SEASON OVER George Nankivell of the Oakland Sea Lions is done for the season after rupturing a disc in his back. Expected recovery time is 8-9 months. The injury was sustained on the 11th against Las Vegas. He threw a 2-1 pitch to George Neugebauer in the 9th, who launched it into the seats for a home run. He was taken out of the game because the coach thought that he wasn't looking very hot. In the dugout he started complaining of back pain. He was taken to the doctor, who gave him X-rays. "I was hoping that it was a pulled muscle or something, but then I found out, and I wasn't happy." This year, he went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.65. |

April 14, 1958 LOPEZ INJURED IN REHAB, RECOVERY TIME SET BACK Mario Lopez was recovering from an ankle sprain he got on April 4th. However, rehab hasn't been well for him. In fact, he still deals with some pain and soreness in the ankle, so team doctors bumped his recovery time back another week. RIVERA GONE 2 GAMES FOR EJECTION Earlier today at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, Swashbucklers 3B Nick Rivera was ejected from the game for arguing a called third strike. In the 9th, Izzy Ramirez threw Rivera a pitch that the home plate umpire called strike three. Rivera was disappointed with the call, so he said a couple words and drifted off... but before he entered the dugout, he charged the umpire with bat in hand. The ump quickly ejected him while Rivera was being restrained by the third base coach and on-deck hitter as the manager still argued the call. In the same game, Izzy set an NBC record for strikeouts in a game with 14. After the game, the NBL office suspended Rivera for 2 games. On the year he's hitting .108 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs in 11 games. |

Great performance from Nick Porter, 1-hitting the Buffaloes. Apparently, Milwaukee's skipper thought his dancing was too annoying and told him he's a lousy winner. COL Springs' skipper then pushed back the Bufs skipper and told him he's a lousy loser.
