AI doesn't think about what ifs. This is why there should be a switch for "Help AI" with various degrees of help.

I was glad to see that they did eventually sign Duffy Dyer off the free agent heap. I think there were roughly 10-15 catchers unemployed when I first noticed that St Louis was catcherless. Now, I'm interested to see what happens when John Ellis finishes his rehab assignment. Will the AI keep Dyer on the active roster as a backup, or will they cut him. Should know soon.

My C got injured. I had three old guys in AAA no option years left on minor league contracts. I called one up. When my regular C returned I had to put the callup guy on waivers. But if he claims, not big deal, I still have two spares. I don't know how AI cold be programmed to that thought process.

I agree, I was just surprised to see the organization only carried 2 catchers total. So no catcher in AAA or AA ball. Might be my fault though, as I don't have large rookie draft, only 5 or 6 rounds. I allow ghost players. Oh and you I took your advice from a ways back and I'm not stressing over the stat output at the minor league level. Thanks.

Just one of the many reasons the human player has an unfair advantage as it currently stands. Really hope AI roster management is on the agenda for 24.

AI can never be as good as a good human player. No matter what they do.

However I suspect they dumb down AI on the big money teams.

I tried something similar. Seven RPs. I made the change mid season.

I let the manager set the bullpen then altered the settings but not the order of the players. I set two as closers 8th or later with a secondary high leverage role. I set two as setup with secondary role as closers.

Nothing terrible happened. I didn't look at every box score but found one where my top closer came into the game in the sixth to get two outs in a high leverage situation. That's what I wanted to see.

The idea of not saving a closer for a late critical situation that may never come possibly isn't good one. I'm reminded of "never save a pitcher for tomorrow, tomorrow it may rain."

Yeah, pretty sure this is the correct hierarchy to go with the AI programming: HIGH LEVERAGE-USE MORE OFTEN-NORMAL-USE LESS OFTEN-AVOID HIGH LEVERAGE-SPECIALIST. The role designation seems more a situational usage definer. So if the Closer is unavailable for a spot in which he'd be the first choice, Setup would be the next grouping under consideration, with this hierarchy then kicking in along with fatigue etc.

I'll certainly be using this as the basis for my BP setup moving forward, but will try a few different things along the way. Anything interesting arises, I'll report.

I have a question for y'all.in regards to Hall of Fame voting. If I participate, does my vote count as a single vote, or does my vote basically take over the AI voters all together and the guy I vote for automatically gets in?

I'm at the beginning of a new season and I have it set as I described and will do the whole year this way.

I really wish Baseball Reference displayed whether a player was happy, sad, mad etc. I would love to know if in real life over 2/3rds of all players were red faced mad on a daily basis, like they are in OOTP. Of course, one of the first things I usually do when playing OOTP is to turn that feature off, but when I forget to do so, I'm always a little frightened by all the anger.

The psychology stuff shouldn't be part of a game with real players. The effects of that are already included in their historical ratings.

Have any of you seen Actionjackson's thread in the bug forum? Lukas responds and says that they are currently working on merging the historical db with the roster db. I have no clue what this means. How will this effect the historical game?

It means the fix for stolen bases will be delayed again.

Back to the St Louis catching situation. When John Ellis came off his rehab assignment, St Louis did keep Dyer on the roster for rest of the season. St Louis won the AL East and faced off against Houston in the NLCS. Ellis was the teams only catcher on the post season roster, as I assume Dyer was ineligible due to signing so late. I'm also kind of flummoxed by the decision of the St Louis manager to bench Luis Arraez for the post season. Arraez hit above .300 on the season. Instead of starting Luis, the AI has him pinch hitting late in games. I will have to check when I get home if the guys playing ahead of him are better defensively or if maybe Arraez has nagging injury I didn't hear about.

I started this thread talking about the AI using starters as closers in the post season. I may have just seen a team do so and in doing so they improved their chances to take home a World Series. Detroit has used Guy Hoffman as their closer all season. Hoffman racked up saves, but he also racked up blown saves as well. When the post season rolled around, Hoffman pretty much forgot how to get anyone out. I was extremely pleased to see the Tigers start using Larry Dierker in the closing role the last couple games. Detroit is up 2 games to 0 against St. Louis in the World Series.

He got claimed. So now I have two spares in AAA who once I call up I can't demote until they clear waivers. So the plan is working!

They were committed on the catcher situation due to lack of forethought.

The hopefully under development help AI switch hopefully as an option to exempt AI from selected roster rules.

I still want to know what it means when they say they're working on merging the historical db with the roster db? Does this mean historical will become another version of the MLB Quickstart? Does it do away with recalc? Sometimes things get tossed out on these Forums, but zero explanation is given. Ugh!
