Canes are hot. Seven game winning streak. Necas has 17 pts during the run, including the game winner last night. Svech has 8 in the last 6.

Canes stay warm. Nine wins in last 10 skates. They gave Vegas their 1st home loss. Necas pt streak has continued to 10 games. Jordan Martinook has a goal in each of the last 4.

The scary thing for me is that coming into this season, if the Canes were going to have a great year, you would have thought Aho & Jarvis would have monster seasons. They've been merely "OK". And their top D pair (Burns/Chatfield) has yet to score a goal. So does that mean the rest of the team is playing above their skates? Or are they due to really take off once the expected contributors get hot?

Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka was black hole last night. Nothing was getting by him. He had 49 saves. Utah was practically on the kill the last 10 minutes of the game & the Canes still couldn't bust thru. Kudos to him.

Two things I didn't like though. Carolina lost Svech w/an injured hand from slash that wasn't called. While Svech was in possession of the puck. How the zebras missed it? Don't know. Svech could be looking @ missed time.

The other was an uninstigated attack by Michael Carcone on Jack Drury that got him DQ'd w/a major.

Is Utah known for being dirty or did I just catch them at the right/wrong time?

Canes update:

Team continues to play well, currently 2nd in the NHL in pts%. Necas pt streak finally ended in Philly @ 13 games. But Carolina still won 4-1 w/a 3 goal blitz in the 3rd period. Even better, Aho won the game w/a 5 on 5 goal that trickled through the Flyer goalie. So hopefully the puck luck for him is about to turn. In the meantime, SeaBass became the Canes franchise all time leader in GW goals passing the man that drafted him, HOF Ron Francis.

Bad news is that G Frederik Andersen is out 8-12 weeks w/knee surgery. On the plus side, it forces Brind'Amour to keep Kochetkov in the net. Hopefully, we will see him lock himself in as the number 1 netminder. On the negative, Pytor isn't the most durable player himself. So 3rd string Spencer Martin (very capable, he has the Canes only shutout) is going to need to be inserted frequently. And that means Carolina is one day away from having their entire season in ruins if one of those guys gets hurt.

I didn't want the Canes to bring back Andersen cause I felt he couldn't get it done during Stanley time. And he has now become injury prone. Canes are tight, super tight against the cap, so potential moves are limited @ the moment.

Shouldn't have spoke it into existence.

Big comeback tonight. Canes scored 5 in the 3rd vs the NHL's stingiest team to win 6-4. Carolina got Seth Jarvis back & he responded w/a goal & 2 assists. Aho continues to pick up steam w/a goal & 3 helpers. And Necas remains hot w/a goal (GW on the PP) & assist. And Brett Burns finally found the back of the net w/his 1st goal.

Is there anyone on the planet that understands what makes goalie interference?

Blockbuster trade!

Hurricanes get Mikko Rantanen from the Avs & Taylor Hall from Chicago for Martin Necas, Chris Drury, a 2nd & a 4th rounder. Avs get the players & picks. Hawks will pay 1/2 of Rantanen's salary plus get back the 3r round pick they had given the Canes before.

Nice trade! We'll see you Saturday!

But the important question is…when, oh, when, will Trevor Lewis finally get his Silver Stick ceremony??

For those who haven't been following this (practically everyone), perennial Unsung Hero Award winner (so much that the players renamed the Award in his honor when he left and now have disqualified him from winning it again that he's back, since once they actually call it The Trevor Lewis Unsung Hero Award, what's the point Lewis winning it, again?) Lewis was closing in on his 1000th career game…when he got hurt in game #999 back on November 30.

So the Kings (who are really good at ceremonies, you may recall…we got Hollywood skillz, yo!) had to push back the planned ceremony until Lewis actually played his 1000th game, which he did on January 5th. The ceremony was promptly scheduled for January 7th, before the Kings faced Calgary…but had to be scrubbed when the L.A.-Flames matchup was cancelled due to actual L.A. Flames.

The Kings then went on a 5-game trip of Western Canada (well, Seattle qualifies as Canada to some, perhaps) and came home this past week. However, the first game (where the Kings had a really bad case of the First Game Home blues, understandably) was dedicated to honoring the First-Responders, so Trevor's ceremony would have been inappropriate, and the other home game (where the team rallied past the Panthers in the 3rd) was on TNT, and you can't ask a national TV telecast to conform with your special events (and we'd want the ceremony shown on local TV, with Kings announcers hosting, anyhow.)

So now the Kings are back on the road for another five games, and Trevor still doesn't have his Silver Stick. Next opportunity would be when the Kings come back on February 5th against Montreal, but who knows.

At this point, perhaps Lewis and the club want to wait until after the 4-Nations break, as the Kings' next game sees them hosting the Utah Ukeleles (or whatever they're called by then) and what with Trevor being The Greatest Hockey Player from Utah, EVER, perhaps he'd like the ceremony to broadcast back home to the Beehive State.

We wait and see. At this point, I won't be shocked if the Utah game gets canceled due to a swarm of bees…

(The Kings will eventually get all these road games back; 22 of the final 32 are at home. Of course the last time the schedule worked like this was in 2020, when the rebuilding Kings had FINALLY gotten their stuff together and were on a League-high 7-game win streak…and then COVID came to town and all those lovely home games ended up being cancelled instead. Just saying.)

In case certain Hurricanes fans aren't up on their Kings news ahead of tonight's game, let's review:

• Drew Doughty is back, ahead of schedule!

• Not that it matters so much, since with Drew out, Vladislav Gavrikov slid over to RD, he and Mikey Anderson became one of the best pairs in the League, and the Kings have led in all sorts of defensive metrics so far this year.

• Not that that matters so much, as L.A.'s power play has been rancid all season, and with the team averaging a whopping 1.50 GPG over the last six, they're now in the bottom of the scoring overall.

About the only cause for worry Carolina has tonight is if they manage to knock it into their own net, as Moritz Seider did in Detroit.

(Not that THAT helped, as after the gift gave L.A. a 2-0 lead, they allowed 3 straight to give up said lead, and a pair of ENG, as well.)

At this point, I'm in favor of putting Jim Fox and Daryl Evans on the ice and moving some of our "stars" (Moore, Byfield) to the broadcast team. Sure, Foxy and Daryl are each 64 years old, but they can still probably improve our "offense"…

Canes have a bug going through the locker room right now. So the players available will be in flux right up til the puck drop.

Oh, I'm sorry. 9 goals in 6 games was the Kings' total heading into Thursday's shut out in Tampa Bay. It's 9 in 7 now. 1.29 per game, now.

Also, the puck that hit Mikey Anderson in the hand not only forced him out of the TBL game, but he's TBD, now. Fu…dge.
