1902 World Series results
1902 World Series: Baltimore Orioles vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Game 1, October 8th, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh World Series Game 1 Victory for Tannehill and Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Pirates started the World Series in dominant fashion, blowing out the visiting Baltimore Orioles at Exposition Park by a score of 11-1 and securing an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pirates left-hander Jesse Tannehill turned in a fine performance. He threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Tannehill was effective for Pittsburgh, seldom allowing the Orioles to square up a pitch. The left-hander tossed 128 pitches over 9 innings. He limited Baltimore to just 1 run on 4 hits. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Tannehill said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 9th, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh Baltimore Win Evens Series at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Bill Bernhard, the Baltimore Orioles topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 6-3 and got their first win in the 1902 World Series. Bernhard threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball for the Orioles. The win moves Baltimore into a 1-1 tie with Pittsburgh. Baltimore used a timely hit from Frank Foutz to get the win. The first baseman stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Orioles ahead, 6-3. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a difference-maker. "We're one game closer to our goal," Baltimore manager John McGraw said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played on October 11th at Oriole Park in Baltimore. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 11th, Oriole Park, Baltimore Road Win Lifts Pittsburgh to 2-1 Lead in WS Riding the 3-hit performance of right fielder Harry Arndt, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the Baltimore Orioles, 14-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. Arndt went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1. A key moment came with two out in the top of the fifth. That's when Arndt hit a slider from Barney Wolfe for a run-scoring single, putting Pittsburgh up, 5-3. "I thought I'd have a season or two to get accustomed to everything," Arndt said. "I didn't think I'd be here already." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Oriole Park in Baltimore. Pirates lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 12th, Oriole Park, Baltimore Almost There: Pittsburgh On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 9-3 Win With starter Jesse Tannehill leading the charge, the Pittsburgh Pirates crushed the Baltimore Orioles, 9-3, in Game 4 of the World Series. Tannehill threw 9.0 innings allowing 3 runs at Oriole Park as Pittsburgh breezed to a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pittsburgh used a well-timed hit by Claude Ritchey to capture the win. The second baseman socked a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to put the Pirates ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important. "It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Ritchey said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Oriole Park in Baltimore. Pirates lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 13th, Oriole Park, Baltimore Baltimore Wins at Home to Narrow Series Deficit to 3-2 The Baltimore Orioles have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Pittsburgh Pirates, winning, 9-7, at Oriole Park. Orioles right fielder Bill Keister went 3 for 4 with a triple and a double, while adding 4 RBIs and scoring once. The win cuts the deficit facing the Orioles to 3-2 in the best-of-7 World Series. Baltimore, Maryland native Bill Keister had a clutch at-bat in the bottom of the seventh for the Orioles. With Baltimore trailing 7-6, he hit a 2-run triple. "There's nothing like the postseason," said Keister, "to ramp up the pressure." Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 15th, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh Pirates Win World Series The Pittsburgh Pirates are champions, today and forever. The Pirates topped the Baltimore Orioles 10-4 at Exposition Park today to claim the World Series crown. "Nobody can take this away from us, not ever," said series MVP and shortstop Honus Wagner after his club had sealed the victory. "We worked hard and we accomplished our goal." The atmosphere was electric as the newly-crowned champs stormed the field at the conclusion of the game. Fans cheered, gloves flew in the air, high fives and hugs were the order of the day. "From day one of spring training, I could see it in their eyes," said Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke. "The players had that look of intensity, of hunger, of a desire to accomplish something great, and today they did that. They're champions of the world." The Pirates took the series 4-2. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and an 87-53 record. Pirates win series, 4-2, (Pittsburgh Pirates (2)) World Series MVP: SSP Honus Wagner (Pittsburgh Pirates) Here are the 1902 World Series champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates: Last edited by Lord Byron; 04-13-2025 at 02:54 PM. |
