Expansion Draft Recap
The Colorado Rockies now have a Major League roster. The expansion draft, a pivotal moment in the franchise's history, is complete, and the team has selected 35 players to form the core of its inaugural season.
Thorne and Sundin Recap the Picks Denver, CO -- November 18, 1992 -- In a post draft media session, GM Caleb Thorne and Head Scout Gordie Sundin offered their thoughts on the newly formed roster. Thorne, ever analytical highlighted the strategic approach to building the team. Caleb Thorne (General Manager): "Our goal wasn't to simply acquire the 'best available' players from available. We targeted individuals who fit a specific strategic profile, both in terms of their on-field ability and their ability to adapt to our unique environment. Players like Dwight Gooden (SP, Mets) and Mike Kingery (CF, A's) bring valuable veteran experience and professionalism. We also prioritized young, high-upside players like Sandy Alomar, Jr. (C, Cleveland) and Mark Grudzielanek (2B, Montreal) who our models suggest are ready for a larger role. We believe we have a solid mix of players who can contribute immediately while also providing a base for our future. The altitude of Denver will reward certain types of pitching and hitting, and our selections reflect a deliberate approach to exploiting those factors. While our roster is nearly complete, we will continue to look for opportunities to add players who fit our plan as we move toward spring training." Head Scout Gordie Sundin, who worked closely with Thorne, praised the effort and the talent they were able to acquire. Gordie Sundin (Head Scout): "I'll tell you what, this was a heck of a day. Caleb and his team did their homework, and we were able to get some guys with grit. I like a lot of the arms we picked up. You got Gooden, and good veteran who knows how to pitch. And then you have some younger guys like Sterling Hitchcock (SP, Yankees) and Dave Burba (SP, Giants) who just need a shot. We've got a group of competitors, and that's the most important thing." Media Reaction: The First Roster Takes Shape "Mile High Mike: O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio "Alright, here we go! The Rockies' roster is here! A lot of names, a lot of question marks. Dwight Gooden, huh? A big name! I like that. They got some bats in there, too, with guys like Derrick May and Mark Grudzielanek. But let's be honest, we've got a lot of guys I've never heard of. A lot of young guys and cast-offs. This Thorne kid is making big bets on a lot of unknowns. I hope his fancy 'models' are right, because the fans are gonna want to see some big league talent when they get to the ballpark. This isn't a bad start, not at all, but it's a long road from here to a winning team. The jury's still out, folks, but they've given us something to talk about." Isabelle "Izzy' Garcia, The Denver Post "The inaugural Colorado Rockies roster, a mix of seasoned veterans and unproven prospects, is a clear reflection of General Manager Caleb Thorne's long-term vision. The selection of pitchers like Dwight Gooden provide a much-needed anchor, while the acquisition of young high-upside players like Sandy Alomar Jr. and Derrick May demonstrates a commitment to building a foundation from within. The overall draft prioritizes pitching and versatile position players, with Thorne's analytical focus evident in the acquisition of specific player profiles. The team has built a roster that, while unlikely to contend in its first season, possesses the foundational pieces for future development and success." Marvin "The Maestro" Maxwell, National Sports Columnist "The Colorado Rockies have emerged from the expansion draft with a roster that is both intriguing and, in many ways, and exercise in restraint. Rather than chasing headline-grabbing names, Caleb Thorne has assembled a collection of players whose value, according to his unconventional philosophy, may be greater than their public perception. Gooden is a fine choice, a savvy veteran whose experience will be invaluable. The key to this draft however, will be the development of the younger players. Thorne is betting that his organizational system will turn these overlooked players into diamonds in the rough. It is a risky strategy, but one that could, in time, establish a unique and sustainable identity for the franchise." |

Winter Meeting Wheeling and Dealing
Thorne Makes His First Moves: A Veteran Arm and an All-Star Second Basemen
General Manager Caleb Thorne, true to his analytical and strategic nature, has made two significant trades, signaling his intention to build a competitive roster while still maintaining a long-term focus. Trade #1: The Star Power Acquisition In a move that has immediately excited fans and the national media alike, the Rockies have acquired veteran second basemen Jeff Blauser from the Atlanta Braves. In exchange, the Braves will receive shortstop Tim Bogar. Blauser, a Gold Glove-caliber defender and a proven offensive talent, brings a much-needed combination of experience and skill to the infield. This trade instantly upgrades the Rockies' starting lineup and gives the team a marquee player to build around. The reaction from fans has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing renewed excitement and a significant spike in fan interest...as if it couldn't get much higher. Trade #2: The Veteran Arm for the Pitching Staff In a separate move, the Rockies completed a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies to acquire left-handed pitcher Terry Mulholland. The Phillies will receive first basemen Al Martin. This trade further reinforces Thorne's philosophy of building a strong, versatile pitching staff. Mulholland is a veteran southpaw who can provide innings as a starter or key reliever, giving manager Dusty Rhodes valuable flexibility on the mound. "Mile High Mike" O'Connell Weighs In The phones at Denver Sports Radio were ringing off the hook as "Mile High Mike" O'Connell gave his take on the trades. "Mile High Mike" O'Connell: "Well, what do you know? Thorne and his number-crunchers got themselves a real player! Jeff Blauser! This is the kind of move you make to get fans out to the ballpark. He's a name, a good name, and he's a damn good player. You give up Bogar? A good guy, but you make that deal every single time. The Mulholland trade? That's a good solid move. We need arms, and we get on who can give you some innings. I've gotta say, I'm impressed. The kid knows what he's doing. He's not just building a roster for a decade from now; he's giving us a team to be excited about now!" Fan Caller (Rick from Aurora): "Mike, Rick from Aurora. I've gotta say I was skeptical about this whole thing, but getting a player like Blauser, a guy who can really hit and play defense, that's huge! It makes me feel like we're not just a team of cast-offs anymore. We've got a foundation, a real foundation. I'm excited!" Fan Caller (Terry from Aspen): "Hi, Mike, Terry from Aspen. I like the moves, but I'm a little worried about giving up both Al Martin and Tim Bogar. Are we just giving up young players for veterans? What about the future? "Mile High Mike" O'Connell: Susan, that's a fair question. But look at what we're getting. We're getting a top-tier second basemen and a solid left-handed arm. You've gotta give up something to get something. And Thorne has been clear--this is a marathon, not a sprint. These moves make us better today and help us get to where we want to be tomorrow. It's a win-win, I'm telling you!" |

Thorne Dabbles in Free Agency
The First Free Agent: Lance Johnson:
The Colorado Rockies have officially signed outfielder Lance Johnson to a 4-year $4.8 million contract. Johnson most recently played for the Chicago White Sox. Know for his stellar speed and versatility, Johnson represents the kind of player that GM Caleb Thorne's front office seems to be targeting. He is a fantastic baserunner, a solid defensive player who can handle any outfield position, and a contact hitter who puts the ball in play without striking out often. Johnson's skill set aligns perfectly with the Rockies' philosophy of acquiring players who can contribute in multiple facets of the game. The Pursuit of a 'Fireballer' Reliever In a move that has the bullpen connoisseurs buzzing, the Rockies have also offered a contract to hard-throwing reliever Troy Percival. The team is currently waiting to hear back from the young flamethrower, a move that signal the organization's desire to build a strong, dynamic bullpen. GM Thorne and "Mile High Mike Weigh In Caleb Thorne (GM): Lance Johnson is a terrific addition to our ball club. His speed on the bases and in the outfield, combined with his ability to consistently put the ball in play, is exactly the kind of skillset we value. He's a professional hitter who doesn't give away at-bats. He's going to be a key piece to our outfield mix. As for our other pursuits, we are looking to add quality arms to our bullpen, and we hope to have more news on that front soon." "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio: "Now we're talking! Lance Johnson is a legit players. He's a grinder, a guy who knows how to play the game, and he's going to be great to have in the clubhouse. He's not a flashy home run guy, but he's a professional hitter and a great defender. And Percival? Oh, you've got to love that! A young kid who throws fire! It shows that Thorne isn't just sitting around. He's being selectively aggressive and trying to build a real team here. This is good stuff, folks. This is really good stuff! |

It's Almost Time to Start Playing Games!
"Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio:
"Alright, folks, listen to that sound. That's the sound of hope! That's the sound of a new season. That's the sound of our baseball team! It's finally happening! The pitchers and catchers are reporting to Arizona, and for the first time in our history, the Colorado Rockies are a real, tangible baseball team. This isn't just a fantasy anymore. You got guys like Dwight Gooden and Sandy Alomar, Jr. heading down there. You got Terry Mulholland, too, who we just got in that big trade. They're all down there, throwing and catching, and getting ready to wear the purple and black. It's no longer about mock drafts or trades on paper. It's about a bunch of guys who have never played together, getting to know each other, and becoming a team. This is where the vision of Caleb Thorne and Dusty Rhodes starts to become a reality. This is where we find out what this team is really made of. Who's got the arm? Who's got the bat? Who's going to step up and be a leader? We're going to have a lot of questions answered in the next few weeks, and it's a beautiful thing. This is the beginning of something special for the Mile High City. The first pitch is right around the corner, and I've got to tell you...I'm like a little kid on Christmas morning. It's almost time for Rockies baseball!" |

Rockies Play First Spring Training Game
Game Recap: Padres Edge Rockies 4-3
The Rockies' inaugural spring training game saw a solid performance from a number of players. Catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr. a key acquisition in the expansion draft, had a strong showing at the plate, collecting a pair of hits in the loss. The first home run in franchise history was hit by first basement Terry Jorgensen, who launched a solo shot over the fence. On the mound, veteran starter Dwight Gooden took the loss, but showed some good moments in his debut. He finished he outing with 2.2 innings pitcher, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs, while walking 2 and striking out 2. It was a good first step for the veteran ace. Dusty Rhodes Gives His Thoughts on the First Game After the game, Manager Dusty Rhodes addressed the media, focusing on the team's effort and the overall experience of their first game. Dusty Rhodes: "You know, the score wasn't what we wanted, but that's not what today was about. We've got a lot of guys here who have never played together, and they're learning to be a team. I saw a lot of good things out there. Sandy Alomar looked great at the plate, and for Terry Jorgensen to hit our first home run...that's a moment he'll never forget. Gooden got a little wild, but he's a veteran and he'll shake off the rust. This what spring training is for. We're building a foundation, and you can see the effort and potential. I'm proud of the way our guys competed." "Mile High Mike" O'Connell Reacts The phones at Denver Sports Radio were buzzing after the game, and "Mile High Mike" O'Connell was there to give his take. "Mile High Mike" O'Connell: "It's a beautiful thing, isn't it folks? The first game is in the books! We lost 4-3, but who cares about the final score? This is about seeing on our guys on the field. Alomar looks like the real deal with a couple of hits, and Terry Jorgensen? He's a legend already, with the first home run in franchise history. This is what it's all about! It's only spring training, but you can feel the excitement. The team is finally real. We've got a lot of work to do, but this is a great start." |

Rockies Post First Spring Training Win
Game Recap: Rockies Triumph 3-2 over Phillies
The Rockies' inaugural spring training win was a true team effort, with the pitching staff leading the way. Newly acquired pitcher Terry Mulholland set the tone, delivering a fantastic performance in his start. He tossed 4 shutout innings, giving up just 2 hits and no walks, showcasing the kind of control and poise the front office has hoped for. The bullpen handled the rest, with Bryan Wolff earning the win and Dave Burba picking up the save to seal the victory. On the offensive side, the Rockies scraped together just enough runs to secure the win. B.J. Surhoff laced a double, while Pat Listach delivered a key RBI. Lance Johnson also showcased his speed with a stolen base, a sign of what's to come from the fleet-footed outfielder. The Phillies' only runs came on a two-run home run by Ricky Jackson in the 7th inning. "Mile High Mike" O'Connell's Take: A Win, A Scare, and a Warning "Mile High Mike" O'Connell: "They did it! They got the first win! A 'W'! Let me tell you, that's a good looking box score. Mulholland, the guy we traded for, he was money! For shutout innings, just what you want to see. This guy is a pro. The bullpen held on, and Burba gets the save! The kids are alright, folks! The kids are alright! "But...but...now for the bad news. We heard reports that a couple of our pitchers, Willis Roberts and Sterling Hitchcock, had to leave the game with injuries. You've got to hope it's nothing serious. You just get this team together, and then something like this happens. It's a reminder that this is a long season, and you need to be deep. Thorne better have some more aces up his sleave if we're going to get through this. It's a great win, but we've got to keep an eye on those injuries." |

Sterling Hitchcock Injury Update
Sterling Hitchcock Confirms Season-Ending Injury
In a quiet press conference, a visibly disappointed Sterling Hitchcock confirmed that his season is officially over. The 21-year-old left-hander, a key expansion draft pick with a bright future, suffered a torn flexor tendon in his elbow on March 2. When asked by reporters if there was any chance he could return to the mound this year, he simply offered a monosyllabic response: "Nope." The injury, which occurred during the team's first spring training victory, is a significant blow to the club's pitching depth and a devastating setback for Hitchcock, who was poised to play a crucial role in the inaugural bullpen. Media Reactions "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio "I hate to say I told you so folks, but I said it was a scare, and it was a bad one. This is a real gut punch for the team. This kid, Hitchcock, he's got all the talent in the world, a bright future, and now he's gotta sit and watch. This is the reality of an expansion team, a young team. You have a plan, and then you have to adjust. It's a long season, and we've already got a challenge on our hands. Our thoughts are with the kid, but the front office has got to get to work and find a way to make up for this." Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia The Denver Post "The news of Sterling Hitchcock's season-ending injury is a major setback for the Colorado Rockies and bitter pill to swallow for the young pitcher. Hitchcock was a player that Caleb Thorne's analytical team was high on, seeing him as a key piece of the future pitching staff. His youth, combined with his raw talent, made him a quintessential 'Thorne' pick. The injury not only robs him of a chance to compete in the inaugural season but also forces the front office to re-evaluate their bullpen depth. It's a tough lesson for a for a new franchise and a reminder of the fragility of a meticulously laid plan." |

Spring Training Come to a Close
Final Game Recap & Spring Training Close
The Rockies wrapped up their spring training schedule with a 10-4 loss to the Reds. The final score was secondary to the team's bigger goals: a final tune up for the players. As the closed their first spring training with a 15-15 record, Manager Dusty Rhodes and his coaching staff now face their most difficult task yet. The Final Word from Manager Dusty Rhodes Manager Dusty Rhodes addressed the media after the final game, acknowledging the journey and setting a firm look toward the future. Dusty Rhodes: "We finished the spring with a 15-15 record, so you can't be mad about that. It's a testament to the hard work and resilience of these young men. The final score today doesn't matter. What matters is the work we've put in, the progress we've made, and team we've built. We've seen some great things from guys like Sandy, Jeff, and Kevin. We've also had our challenges, and we know we're a work in progress. But now, spring training is over. The time for evaluation is done. It's time to play for real. We're going to put those uniforms on for real and go out there and compete." The Roster Crunch: Who Stays and Who Goes to the Minors? With the exhibition season behind theme, the real work begins for the front office and coaching staff. General Manager Caleb Thorne, Manager Dusty Rhodes, and their team must now finalize the 25-man roster that will head to Denver and ultimately Montreal for Opening Day. This process is filled with tough decisions, as the team's spring training performance and the front office's long-term vision clash. The teams final record of 15-15, as seen in the final stats, gives them a solid foundation to build upon. However, they've also had some tough losses and the reality of a new franchise. Players who have performed might not fit the long-term plan, while others, whose spring may have been lackluster, may still be viewed as key parts of the franchise's future. The young GM and the manager will need to work together to navigate this critical phase. Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Post "The Rockies' inaugural spring training was a success, not necessarily in terms of wins and losses, but in what was accomplished. The team, under the unconventional guidance of GM Caleb Thorne and the steady hand of Manager Dusty Rhodes, found its identity. The exhibition games gave the front office and coaching staff a chance to evaluate the expansion draft pics and to see how they would gel as a unit. Standouts like Alomar, Jr. and Jeff Blauser cemented their place in the lineup, while some young arms showed promise. The season-ending injury to Sterling Hitchcock was a major blow, but it also force the organization to adapt and begin to build depth immediately. This team is ready. The real test begins on Opening Day, when they have to settle on a final roster and compete at a major league level for the first time." "Mile High Mike" O'Connell's Final Spring Training Rant "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio "The spring training games are over, folks! It's finally happening! We've seen a few wins, we've seen a few losses, but who cares! It's all just practice, right? What I've seen is a bunch of guys who want to be here, who are learning to be a team, and who are ready to prove the doubters wrong! I'm telling you, this team has grit! The real season starts in a few days, and I've got my tickets. I've got my jersey. I'm ready to watch our boys take the field. It's time for some real Colorado Rockies baseball!" |

Rockies Inaugural 25-Man Roster is Complete
After months of anticipation, the waiting is finally over. The Colorado Rockies have officially set their roster for their inaugural season, and the team is headed to New York for Opening Day against the Mets. GM Caleb Thorne and Manager Dusty Rhodes have made their final decisions, shaping the group of players who will forever be known as the first Colorado Rockies squad.
The Inaugural 25-man Roster Pitchers (12) --Starters: The rotation with be led by the veteran presence of Dwight Gooden, Terry Mulholland and Todd Stottlemyre, with young arms like Armando Reynoso and Gil Heredia also making the cut. --Bullpen: The relief corps features a mix of experience and unproven talent, including Paul Abbott, Jack Armstrong, Steve Cooke, Kevin Ritz, Rudy Seanez, and Brian Shouse. The bullpen will be a key area to watch as they navigate the challenges of pitching at altitude. Catcher (2) --Sandy Alomar, Jr. and Eddie Taubensee will handle the catching duties. Alomar, a key pick in the expansion draft, is a proven talent expected to be a leader behind the plate. Infielders (6) --The infield is anchored by veteran David Segui at first base and expansion draft standout Pat Listach at second. The left side of the infield will be handled by Jeff Blauser at shortstop, and B.J. Surhoff at third. Utility player Luis Alicea and Terry Jorgensen also made the squad. Outfielders (5) --The outfield features a promising blend of youth and experience. Gernomo Berroa and David Segui (also at first base) bring power bats to the lineup, while Brian Hunter, Mike Kingery, and Lance Johnson will patrol the outfield. Media Analysis "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio "Alright, folks, this is it! The first 25! You've got some names you know, and you've got some young guys nobody's ever heard of. I'll tell you what, though, this team has a certain...a certain scrappiness to it. Thorne and Rhodes, they've picked guys who they think can compete. A lot of young pitchers, which is a risk, but it's a new team, a new city. You gotta take risks! I"m ready to see these guys go out there and prove everyone wrong!" Isabelle "Izzy" Thorne, The Denver Post "The final roster announced today reflects GM Caleb Thorne's clear and consistent philosophy. The team is built around a core of young, athletic talent, particularly on the pitching staff, with the hope of developing them within the system. The selection of players like Sandy Alomar, Jr. and Jeff Blauser provides a foundation of veteran leadership, but the emphasis is clearly on the long game. The bullpen, in particular, will face a steep learning curve. While there are a few surprises, the roster is a testament to the front office's commitment to building a sustainable winner rather than a short-term contender." Rockies Make Their Debut
ESPN BASEBALL TONIGHT
"BASEBALL TONIGHT: ROCKIES DEBUT" CHRIS BERMAN Good evening, sports fans! Welcome to Baseball Tonight where we've got a whole new team to talk about! The Colorado Rockies have officially taken the field, and while they may have lost a game, they've won a piece of history! But history, as they say, isn't always pretty. The New York Mets put a damper on the Rockies' debut, winning this one by a score of 10-2! Let's get right to the highlights with our main man, 'The Baseball Man,' Peter Gammons!" PETER GAMMONS "Thanks, Chris. It was a tough debut for the Rockies, but not without some bright spots. The Mets' bats were just too much, especially early in the second inning. But if you're GM Caleb Thorne and Manager Dusty Rhodes, you've got to be happy with some of what you saw. The bats were able to get some hits and a guy like Geronimo Berroa had a very good day at the plate." Cut to highlight: fast-paced montage of game action) CHRIS BERMAN "A grand old day at Shea! For the Mets, it was all about one big swing, one big inning! In the bottom of the second, with two out, Dave Magadan, delivers a two-run single to put the Mets on top 2-0! Little bit later, it's 'The Big Cat,' Andres Gallaraga, and he hits a three-run blast! Back, back, back...gone! Mets up 5-0! That's how you put a team on the ropes early! The Rockies battled back, but it was just too much for this new team to overcome!" Cut back to Berman and Gammons in the studio CHRIS BERMAN It's a tough day on the injury front, Peter. Mike Kingery with a beautiful triple, but a has to leave the game with an injury. We'll have to wait and see the severity but for now he's out. PETER GAMMONS "It is a tough break, Chris. Kingery was a guy they were counting on to patrol the outfield, and for him to go down with a leg injury in the very first game, that's something Caleb Thorne is going to have to address immediately. You can't afford to lose key pieces on an expansion team. You also saw Dwight Gooden, the former Met, on the mound for the Rockies. He showed flashes of what made him great, but that 5-run second inning, that's jus the kind of thing that happens with you're working with a new defense and new team. He pitched into the fifth and kept them in the game after that tough second, which is a good sign." CHRIS BERMAN "But the hits were there! Tell us about the Rockies offense, Peter!" PETER GAMMONS "Well, you saw a few guys swing the bat pretty well. Geronimo Berroa, who had three hits looked solid. Shawon Dunston had a double. The Rockies were able to get 12 hits, but they just couldn't bunch them together in the right spots. They left nine men on base. That's a sign of a team still learning how to win. But the good new is, they didn't get shut out. The bats were active. They've got something to build on." CHRIS BERMAN "Final thought Peter?" PETER GAMMONS "Chris, this is an expansion team. There's a lot of pressure, and there are a lot of tough games ahead. But the fact that they got some hits, they showed some fight, and some of the young guys performed well--that's what you build on. The loss hurts, but the lessons they learned in this first game, those are what matter most in the long run. The season is long, and the Rockies are just getting started." CHRIS BERMAN "That's going to do it for us here on Baseball Tonight! We'll see you tomorrow night. |

The First 'W': Rockies Grab a Historic Win
The Colorado Rockies' inaugural victory was a true team effort, highlighted by strong pitching and a clutch eighth-inning rally. Starter Terry Mulholland was magnificent, stifling the Mets' bats for 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs. HIs performance set the stage for the bullpen, with Jack Armstrong earning the win and Kevin Ritz locking down the save.
The game's turning point came in the top of the eight. Down 2-0, the Rockies offense finally broke through against Met's ace David Cone. The rally was capped off by a go-ahead, run-scoring single from a familiar face; Mike Kingery. Kingery who had left the first game with an injury, proved his resilience by coming up big in a crucial moment driving in the go-ahead runs to put the Rockies up 4-2. Manager Dusty Rhodes, beaming after the game, praised his starting pitcher. Dusty Rhodes: "Terry giving us the start that he did was huge. He kept us in the game, gave us a chance to win. That's all you can ask for from a starter. And the guys in the eighth, they didn't give up. They kept battling. That's the kind of team we're going to be." Local Reaction form Denver's Media "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio: "YOU HEARD IT FROM ME DENVER! A WIN! A REAL WIN! The Rockies are on the board, and you can take that to the bank! Forget that first game, forget the big loss, because today, our boys showed some heart! Terry Mulholland, what a performance! And Mike Kingery! The guy was hurt, he comes back, and what does he do? He gets the big hit! The winning hit! This isn't some fluky win, folks, this is a sign of things to come! This team has fight! I'm telling you this is a team you can believe in!" Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Post "The Colorado Rockies' first victory was a microcosm of what this franchise aims to be: resilient, resourceful, and fundamentally sound. Terry Mulholland's masterful outing against a formidable Mets lineup showcased the type of pitching performance this team will need to rely on. The late-inning rally was not powered by home runs, but by clutch hitting and the ability to manufacture runs when it mattered most. The most encouraging sign, perhaps, was the return of Mike Kingery. His timely hit, after an injury scare in the season opener, speaks to the depth and determination of this team's roster. This win is more than just a tally in the standings; it is a vital confidence boost for a young team and a rallying cry for a city that is ready to embraced its new heroes." |

Rockies Light Up Mile High in Historic Home Opener
What a night! The Rockies offense exploded, led by a powerful performance from center fielder Lance Johnson, the player of the game, was simply unstoppable, going 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in four and scoring twice. He set the tone for a relentless offensive attack that the Expos simply couldn't handle.
But Johnson wasn't alone. Second baseman Jeff Blauser electrified the home crowd with not one, but two home runs, including a two-run shot in the first inning that put the Rockies up early. The power surge continued with blasts from Geronimo Berroa and Shawon Dunston, turning the historic night into a full-on demolition. On the mound, pitcher Gil Heredia was brilliant. He handled the pressure of the historic night with veteran composure, pitching 6.2 solid innings and limiting the Expos to just two runs. His performance, combined with the offensive barrage, left Montreal's manager, Tom Runnells, with a simple, defeated assessment of the game: "Just something that happens." Local Reaction from the Denver Media "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio "MILE HIGH MAGIC! Did you see it, Denver?! Our boys put on a show for the home crowd. Gil Heredia was dialed in, giving us a beautiful start. And that offense! Lance Johnson, Blauser, with TWO BOMBS! Every guy in the lineup was hitting! The Expos came to our house and got a taste of what Mile High baseball is all about. Forget the altitude, forget the expansion-team struggles. We're on the board, we're winning at home, and the party has just started." Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Post "The Colorado Rockies' home opener was everything a new franchise could hope for. The atmosphere was celebratory, the crowd was electric, and the team responded with a dominating performance. Lance Johnson, in particular, looked like a true leader at the plate, showcasing both speed and power. But it was the collective offensive effort, with multiple players demonstrating their power, that truly signaled what this team might be capable of. The decisive victory gives this young club significant momentum and strong sense of identity. While it's early in the season, this home opener will undoubtedly be a moment fans will remember for years to come." |

Rockies Wrap Up First Ever Homestand
What a week in Denver! The Colorado Rockies have officially wrapped up their first homestand in franchise history, and they did it in grand style. After a snowstorm postponed Wednesdays game in the fourth-inning, the Rockies swept a double-header against the New York Mets, finishing their inaugural homestand with an impressive 4-2 record and series wins over the Expos and Mets. The Mile High City is buzzing with a new brand of baseball, and this young team has already given its fans plenty to cheer about.
Rockies Sweep Doubleheader, Show Grit and Power Game 1: Dunston's Bat Powers Rockies Past Mets 8-4 In the makeup game for Wednesday's snow-out, the Rockies' offense came to play. Shortstop Shawon Dunston was the hero of the day, going a stellar 4-for-5 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning that put the Rockies ahead for good. Dunston finished the game with 3 RBI, earing him player of the game honors. Shawon Dunston "We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win. We showed a lot for grit and fight today." The Rockies offense was relentless, pounding out 16 hits and getting contributions from throughout the lineup, including a two-run homer from third basemen Jeff Blauser. The bullpen was also strong, with Paul Abbott earning his first career win. Game 2: Walk-Off Heroics Complete the Sweep If the first game was about power, the second was pure drama. In a back-and-forth battle, it was none other than Shawon Dunston who delivered the final blow. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Dunston stepped to the plate and drove in the winning run with a walk-off single, sending the crowd of over 35,000 into a frenzy. The real start of the second game, however, was starter Dwight Gooden. The veteran ace put on a clinic, pitching a complete game to earn his second win of the season. Manager Dusty Rhodes captured the moment perfectly: Dusty Rhodes: "This place sure got loud. The fans were incredible, and they gave us the push we needed to finish that game." Local Reaction from Denver's Media "Mile High Mike" O'Connell, Denver Sports Radio "A SWEEP! A DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP, PEOPLE! You can't make this stuff up! After that snow-out, the guys came out hungry, and they took care of business. From Dunston's absolute mash in the first game to his clutch walk-off in the second, this team has heart! And what about Doc Gooden?! A complete game! At Mile High! Are you kidding me?! The season is young, but I'm telling you right now, this 4-2 team is for real! LET"S GO ROCKIES!" Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Post "The inaugural homestand for the Colorado Rockies was a resounding success, culminating in a doubleheader sweep that will surely be etched into the minds of fans. The team showed remarkable poise in the face of a weather delay and a gritty Mets team, demonstrating a knack for clutch hitting and a deep well of pitching talent. The tandem of established veterans and promising young players is already paying dividends. As the Rockies now hit the road with a winning record, the buzz in Denver is undeniable. This team is building something special, and this first homestand has laid a powerful foundation." The Rockies now hit the road for a six-game road trip against the Expos and Cardinals. They leave Denver with a winning record and two series wins already under their belt. |

An Interview With Caleb Thorne
Izzy Garcia: Caleb, thank you for your time. The atmosphere at Mile High Stadium has been absolutely incredible. The team finished it's first-ever homestand with a 4-2 record and two series wins and sit at 6-3 on the season. What's your immediate reaction to this hot start?
Caleb Thorne: Well, first off, it's great to see the city of Denver rally around this team. The energy from the fans has been amazing, and it's something our guys have fed off of. As for the record, we're certainly pleased with the start. But it's just that--a start. We're a few games into a 162-game season. It's a marathon, not a sprint and we have a long way to go." Izzy Garcia: In the last two games alone, we saw Shawon Dunston come through with some huge, clutch hits, and Dwight Gooden turned in a brilliant complete game. Are these the kinds of veteran performances you envisioned when you built this roster?" Caleb Thorne: "We brought in a mix of players for a reason. We have young guys with a high energy and potential, and we have veterans who know what it takes to win. The performances from Doc and Shawon are exactly what we hope for. They are leaders who can show the younger players how to compete every single night. Those are the guys you want in clutch moments, and they've delivered. But again, it's early. We're asking a lot of these guys, and they're responding. The key is to maintain that focus and consistency over the entire season." Izzy Garcia: With the team now heading out on a road trip to Montreal and St. Louis, what's the message to the players and the coaching staff?" Caleb Thorne: "The message is simple: stay humble and stay hungry. We can't get ahead of ourselves. We've played well so far, but we're going to face some tough competition on the road. It's about sticking to the process, doing the little things right, and continuing to work hard every day. Our guys have the talent, but it's the daily grind and preparation that will truly define us. We'll take it one game at at time and focus on playing clean baseball." Izzy Garcia: The community is buzzing with excitement. There's a real sense that this team could be something special. What do you say to the fans who are already dreaming of October baseball?" Caleb Thorne: "I'd say thank you for their incredible support. We love the energy and the passion. But my job is to keep a long-term perspective. It's a fun time right now, but there will be ups and downs. The real measure of this team won't be in the first six game, but in how we respond to adversity and how we continue to improve throughout the season. We're building something here, and we're committed to doing it the right way." |

April Recap
The Rockies Finish April with a Final Homestand and a Road Trip
The Colorado Rockies concluded their inaugural month of play, finishing April with a 12-10 record. It was a month that could be described as a tale of two halves. The team burst out of the gate with an impressive start, giving fans a lot to cheer about. However, the second half of the month saw them "come back to earth," as they battled to stay afloat. A Mixed Bag in Montreal & a 10-Inning Thriller in St. Louis The Rockies struggles began with road trip to Montreal. After a solid 4-1 victory in the first game of the series, which saw pitcher Todd Stottlemyre earn his first win and catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr. blast a two-run homer, the team dropped the next two. The offense went quiet only managing 5 hits in 5-1 loss in the final game of the series, where the Expos' Delino DeShields had a stellar day. As manager Dusty Rhodes noted after the loss, "It was a tough night at the plate." The team showed its resilience in St. Louis. After losing the first game of the series, the Rockies battled back in a dramatic 10-inning contest. With the game tied in the top of the tenth, left field Geronimo Berroa delivered a clutch RBI single to put the Rockies ahead for good, securing a hard-fought 7-6 victory. Second baseman Jeff Blauser also had a big game, getting on base five times. The win showed the team's grit, with Berroa proudly stating, "Our team showed some gumption. I like it." Unfortunately, the momentum was short-lived. The next two games were nail-biters, with the Rockies falling 1-0 and 3-2. The offense sputtered in the shutout loss and couldn't hold the lead in the last game as the Cardinals walked it off in the ninth. After the 3-2 lass, Rhodes lamented that, "We squandered some opportunities." A Roller Coaster Finish at Mile High The team returned home to Mile High Stadium and had a mixed run against the Florida Marlins and Chicago Cubs. The Rockies swept the Marlins for their first ever three game sweep. In the first game Rockies stages a comeback to beat the Marlins 7-3. Outfielder Troy Neel was the hero of the day going 3-for-3 with a bases-clearing double. The following day, the Rockies posted a dominant 8-0 shutout victory, with Armando Reynoso delivering a masterful performance. The homestead continued in the finale against the Marlins. With the Rockies trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Blauser crushed a walk-off grand slave to give the Rockies an incredible 7-5 victory. "What not to like about a walk-off win?" Blauser said after the game. The momentum was short-lived, as the team then faced the Chicago Cubs in a challenging two-game set. The first game was a grueling 13-inning affair that ended in a 5-4 loss for the Rockies, with the Cubs' Hector Villanueva hitting a go-ahead solo home run in the 13th. The next day, the Rockies offense sputtered in a 6-2 loss, with Cubs catcher Rick Wilkins having a huge day at the plate. The Rockies rounded out their homestand by splitting a pair go games with the St. Louis Cardinals. After a tough 11-2 loss in game one, where the highlight for the home team was Jeff Blauser setting a team record with three doubles, the Rockies bounced back in the second game with a 5-2 win. Pitcher Armando Reynoso was the star, earning praise for his performance. The offense was powered by home runs from Geronimo Berroa and Brian Hunter. The Month Concludes on the Road The final game of April took the Rockies to Florida to face the Marlins. In a tight hard-fought contest, the Rockies ultimately fell in extra innings, 4-3. Pitcher Gil Heredia delivered a fantastic performance, going 7.2 innings and allowing only one run, but the Marlins ultimately won on a walk-off solo home run by Russ McGinnis in the 11th. As manager Dusty Rhodes put it, "This ballgame left me feeling kind of raw." |

Rockies Finish Road Set With Marlins
After losing the first game of the series 4-3 to end the month of April, the Rockies completed the three game set to start May.
Game 2: Marlins Edge Rockies in Pitcher's Duel Saturday's contest was a low-scoring affair that saw the Marlins come out on top. Pitching dominated for both sides, with the Rockies' Dwight Gooden delivering a strong performance, but taking a tough-luck loss. The deciding blow came in the bottom of the seventh, when Florida's Ken Caminiti hit a sacrifice fly off Gooden to break a 3-3 tie. Gooden's line (L, 2-3) was 7.1 innings pitched, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 7. The Rockies' offense, though scrappy, couldn't quite put it all together, leaving seven men on base. Luis Alicea and Shawon Dunston each had two hits, but it wasn't enough to secure the victory. Game 3: Blauser's Heroics Save the Day With the series on the line and the Rockies staring down a sweep, the team rallied for a dramatic come-from-behind victory on Sunday. The game was a back-and-forth battle that saw the lead change hands multiple times. It was Jeff Blauser who proved to be the hero, delivering a clutch 4-RBI performance, including a game-changing double in the top of the ninth that gave the Rockies a 6-5 lead. Blauser, who also hit a triple and a home run in the game, was on fire at the plate. Catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr. also had a big day with three hits and two doubles. The bullpen was key in this win as Kevin Ritz (W, 3-0) and Jack Armstrong (SV, 1) shut down the Marlins' late rally. "Mile High Mike" O'Connell Weighs In: A Month into the Season "Alright, alright, settle down folks! It's your man, 'Mile High Mike,' and you're listing to the Denver Sports Report! Now, I gotta be honest, I'm a little shocked. We're a month into this thing, a month and half maybe, and our boys are sitting at 13-12. An expansion team, a month in, and they're playing .500 baseball. Who saw that coming, huh? Don't lie, I know you were all expecting a lot worse. I was! "I'll tell you what, that trip to Miami, it showed me something. They lost the first two, yeah, but in that last game? Down late, and who steps up? Blauser! The kid comes through with a double, a triple, and a dinger. That's the kind of grit you can't buy folks. That's the kind of heart that tells me this team isn't going to roll over. "I still got my eyes on Thorne and Rhodes. The kid GM and the skipper. They're making it works so far. They're not panicking. They're playing small ball when they have to , and they're getting big hits form guys we're counting on. The bats are better than I thought they'd be, especially the way they can put pressure on the defense. Now, the pitching...that's a how other can of worms, especially with our tough luck. Dwight Gooden deserved a better fate in that second game, but that's baseball. "Look, it's a long season. We're not in the World Series hunt, let's not get carried away. But for right now? For a brand new team? They're competing. And that's all I'm asking for. I'll believe it when I see a winning record in September, but I'm not complaining about what I'm seeing today. We're on the map, folks. We're on the map. We'll be back after this break!" |

Rockies Finish a Road Trip in Chicago
Rockies Split Short Series with Cubs at Wrigley
The Colorado Rockies' road trip continued with a quick two-game series at historic Wrigley Field, where they faced off against the Chicago Cubs. In a tightly contested set, the two teams traded victories, resulting in a series split. The Rockies now stand at 14-13 on the season, continuing their surprisingly competitive start. Game 1: Morgan's Mastery Leads Cubs to Victory In the series opener, the Rockies offense struggled to find its footing against Cubs veteran right-hander Mike Morgan. Morgan delivered a stellar performance, holding the Rockies to just one run on four hits over eight innings. The Cubs' offense was powered by two-out hitting, with Sammy Sosa, Ryne Sandberg, and Rick Wilkins all delivering crucial two-out RBI hits in the early innings. The Rockies only run came in the seventh inning on a RBI single by Shawon Dunston, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit. Starter Todd Stottlemyre took the loss, but the bullpen with Rudy Seanez and Jack Armstrong, held the Cubs scoreless the final three innings. Game 2: Rockies' Offense Erupts in Dramatic Comeback The Rockies bounced back in a big way in the second gam, securing a dramatic comeback victory. After falling behind 5-3 in the sixth inning, the Rockies' offense exploded for five runs over the final three frames. The turning point was a huge five-run seventh inning that saw the Rockies take the lead for good. The Cubs' Sammy Sosa was a one-man wrecking crew, hitting two home runs, but his heroic effort was overshadowed by the Rockies' relentless offense. The bullpen was key once again, with Jack Armstrong, Steve Cooke, Rudy Seanez, and Kevin Ritz shutting down the Cubs' bats in the late innings. The win ensured the Rockies would not be swept and they were able to continue their surprising start to the season. The View from the Press Box: Izzy Garcia Weighs In "The two-game split with the Cubs tells a fascinating story about this young Rockies team. In the first game, they looked a lot like the expansion team we all expected: a few bright spots on offense, but an inability to generate consistent scoring against a solid pitcher like Mike Morgan. But in the second game, we saw a different side of this club--resilience. They fell behind, but instead of folding, they answered with a five-run inning that showcased their potential. The offense is still streaky, but their ability to come back from a deficit on the road, even in a short series, is a very encouraging sign for a new team. The bullpen's performance in both games was also a bright spot. This team might not be a consistent winner yet, but they're certainly a tough out." --Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Post |

Rocky Mountain Highs and Lows
The Rockies wrapped up an eight-game homestead at Mile High Stadium, a stretch that was a rollercoaster of emotion for players and fans alike. From tough losses to dramatic walk-off wins, the team proved to be resilient, finishing the homestand with and even 4-4 record.
The Battle with the Braves: A Series of Near-Mises and a Thrilling Finish The homestand kicked off against one of the better teams in baseball, the Atlanta Braves, and things didn't go the Rockies' way early on. The first game was a tough one as the Rockies' offense was completely shut down by Atlanta pitcher David Nied in a 5-0 shutout. The second game was a much closer affair, a back-and-forth battle that ended in a heartbreaking 7-6 loss for the home team. The next day, things seemed to hit a low point. After leading late, the team gave up 8 runs in the top of the ninth, losing a wild one by a score of 11-7. Just when it seemed like the series was lost, the Rockies turned the tables in spectacular fashion. In the final game against the Braves, the team trailed 10-7 in the bottom of the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, pinch hitter Derrick May stepped to the plate and delivered the biggest hit of the homestand: a walk-off grand slam to right-center field. Finding Their Rhythm Against the Giants Carrying the momentum from May's grand slam, the Rockies entered the four-game series against the San Francisco Giants. The team started strong, winning the first two games. Starting pitcher Armando Reynoso was the hero in a 5-3 win, and Derrick May once again delivering a key hit with a 2-run triple. The next night, it was Gil Heredia who starred on the mound, pitching 7 solid innings in a 5-2 victory. Mike Kingery provided a critical hit, a 2-run single that broke the game open. The momentum was halted by a stellar performance from Giants pitcher John Burkett, who held the Rockies to just one run in a tight 2-1 loss. But once again, the Rockies refused to quit. The final game of the homestand was a marathon that went to extra innings. With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th, Jeff Blauser stepped up and delivered a walk-off single, giving the Rockies a hard-fought 7-6 victory. |

Good catch. I had sent him to AAA before I took the screen shot and I didn't correct the post, I usually do my best proofreading after I've already submitted something. I went back to check to see how he's doing in AAA and I think he's about to make his Rockies debut. He's tearing it up to the tune of a .477 average with 20 home runs, and 58 RBI in 46 games!
