Bold indicates a new single season record. Number next to name indicates how many times player has won award in their career.

**********

I debated back and forth on whether I would extend Small a qualifying offer. I ended up doing so, and as you can see from above he declined it. After raising our player dev, IAFA and scouting budgets, we have just under $16 million to spend on free agents. My main target from here is pitching. We need at least one left handed reliever and possibly another starter, but only for the right price. I wouldn't expect us to sign any of the players listed above, and I’m not looking to overspend or offer too many multiyear deals just yet.

Legend: age, position, name, former team, bat / throw/ overall rating, # all-star selections, awards (if any), career stats

12/1/24: San Diego Brigadiers trade 10x AS and 38 year old closer Jeremy Argento to the Portland Pioneers for 3 prospects. Argento has 480 career saves and spent 3 years with the Commodores in 2016-2018.
12/7/24: San Francisco Dukes trade 3x AS and 36 year old 2B Eric Hopewell to the Chicago Sentinels for 5 prospects just one offseason after signing him to a 34 year contract.
12/16/24: Oakland Commodores sign LHP Nick Bakken to a 2 year, $12 million deal. The second year is a team option with a $600,000 buyout.

**********

As a rather quiet offseason heads to the winter meetings, I continue to look for deals for the overpaid Hatton and another reliever. Nobody seems to be wanting to take Hatton’s $7.1 million over the next two seasons and I don’t blame them. We might be stuck with him for this upcoming season, which as a backup he’s not terrible, just overpaid.

The signing of Bakken fills one of the left handed relievers I’ve been looking for. His splits heavily favor lefties but he’s competent versus righties as well. The options on the open market aren’t great aside from the aforementioned Andy Carter, but his price point is too high for me. The rule 5 draft might be the best place for me to find and answer, but I’ll also be talking to all the GM’s here at the meetings and seeing what’s out there.

I’m hard at work on Christmas eve doing some scouting for the rule 5 draft today. I’ve had to protect 1B Raffale Martinella as he might make the club out of spring training. As far as selections, I took SP Steve Sasso. A 4th round pick by the Portland Pioneers in 2020, Sasso has spent the past 3 seasons in AAA, where he put up a combined 8.1 WAR. His ratings aren’t off the charts (50 stuff, 50 movement, 40 control), but the southpaw will have the opportunity to fight for the last rotation spot. My next pick was right handed reliever Jonathan Bettis. Bettis has spent the past 4 seasons with the back to back champion Philadelphia Ironclads, although he has only ever pitched a maximum of 16.1 innings in a season, spending most of his time in the minors. Bettis has a great cutter and an average changeup, and with 55 stuff, 50 movement and 50 control he can compete for one of the last bullpen spots.

**********

As the year comes to a close, none of the big free agent names have signed. I’m not looking to make a huge splash quite yet, but some of the medium tier players should lower their demands.

12/25/24: LHP Andy Carter signs a 2 year, $40.4 million contract with the Nashville Stars. He becomes the highest paid player on their roster.
12/29/24: The Charlotte Diamonds make a big move acquiring 32 year old SP Alberto Faijoo from the San Diego Brigadiers for 2 prospects. Faijoo, the 2018 LL Pitcher of the Year winner, is on an expiring contract and hopes to help Charlotte make the playoffs for a 6th successive year.
12/30/24: 1B Craig Huff signs a 2 year, $35.2 million contract with the Denver Crusaders. A questionable signing as the Crusaders already have star slugger Caspar Ford at first base.

**********

The start of the new year brings a midway update to our development lab programs.

SS Francisco Rubio, generate batspeed - frustrated
2B Guillermo Salvador, gap power - on track
SP Jim Reed, improve control - frustrated
1B Raffale Martinella, generate batspeed - frustrated
SS Jorge Gonzales, plate discipline - frustrated
RP Javier Bueno, improve control - struggling
3B Sergej Pijnenburg, quality contact - excelling
SP Bobby Tyree, improve control - on track
2B Do-Hyun Lee, plate discipline - excelling
LF Leo Jimenez, two strike approach - on track

These results aren’t amazing, but not entirely terrible. I’m not overly concerned about anyone and I won’t be making and changes.

Subject: Hall of Fame Welcomes Richard

How do you get to the United Baseball League Hall of Fame?
Just hit 500 homers, get 3000 hits, win 300 games or perhaps just save 300 games. Not an easy task, is it? But occasionally it does happen -- it happened to the gifted center fielder Josh Richard, who retired at the age of 39.

Josh Richard was recently inducted into the coveted shrine of hardball heroes by the Baseball Writers Association. Richard was always a favorite of the beat writers -- always quick with a quip and always willing to talk about the game -- but that's not why he got elected to the Hall of Fame. Richard played a good brand of baseball, too. He played in 2568 games, had 2262 hits, 552 home runs, 1474 RBIs and scored 1547 runs while batting .243 in his career.

Reminiscing about his life in baseball, Richard said it all began by hitting grand slam homers in the last of the ninth in his backyard and ended up in the Hall of Fame. "It was quite a trip. I can't believe they pay us money to play a kid's game. Thank goodness I was good at it. I only got a high school education and I had to cheat to get that. Who knows what I would have done without baseball. I was just a poor old country boy. For the longest time I even thought the last words of the national anthem were 'play ball'."

1/2/25: The Denver Crusaders strike again, retaining CF Todd Phillips and signing him to a 8 year, $280.5 million contract.
1/2/25: Japanese SP Norihide Ozawa signs a 4 year, $54 million contract with the Indianapolis Tigers. The 32 year old will slot in behind SP Jeremy Ameduri.
1/3/25: 3B Marco Sosa sign a 2 year, $27.8 million contract to remain with the San Francisco Dukes.
1/5/25: Defending champion Philadelphia Ironcalds trade 1B Nate Sellers to the Detroit Generals for 30 year old SP Art Gribble. Sellers was making around $26 million but was not a starter for Philadelphia.
1/8/25: SP Tommy Crist signs a 7 year, $151.8 million contract with the Baltimore Wardens. Us here at Oakland are thankful we traded him for Rubio.
1/27/25: San Francisco Dukes LF Omar Orta will miss the 2025 season after breaking his elbow in a car crash.
1/28/25: LF Ricky Rosta signs a 2 year $18.8 million contract with the Indianapolis Tigers.
1/28/25: SP David Fraser signs a 3 year $54.6 million contract with the Milwaukee Bishops.
1/29/29: LF Seth Small signs a 3 yearn $38.9 million contract with the Phoenix Archers. We receive a supplemental second round pick in this upcoming draft.

The time has come for international free agency. Daniel Rodriguez has been scouting all over the world for the next crop of youth talent, something I’m looking to improve upon in the organization. We’ve signed the following players:

17 year old CF Alfredo Urbina was born in Venezuela. This young man’s swing is a thing of beauty and projects to be one of the best pure hitters of his generation. He projects to be among the best in baseball at working the count and drawing walks. He can impact the game with his wheels on the base. Urbina is projected to be an elite starting center fielder. Signed for $2.2 million.

17 year old left fielder Anthony Otten was born in the Netherlands. Otten has excellent patience at the plate and picks pitches he can handle. Not quite elite, but his hitting tool projects well thanks to his ability to spray line drives to the whole field. His pure speed grades out as a plus. Otten has the potential to develop into a big league regular for the bulk of his career. Signed for $1.9 million.

16 year old shortstop Jose Barrera was born in the Dominican Republic. He has improving pitch recognition, and may make consistent contact. He has the strength to put a charge in the baseball and hit an above average number of dingers, His defense as a shortstop is adequate, and he may see a move to second base. Barrera projects to be an above average big league shortstop. Signed for $900k.

16 year old center fielder Manny Gonzalez was born in the Dominican Republic. He is a young player with above average power potential. His speed grades out as above average. He needs to improve his pitch selection and understand game situations and counts to be anything more than an average contact hitter. Gonzalez can be a second division starter at center field. Signed for $350k.

17 year old right handed pitcher Sal Agredano was born in the Dominican Republic. His 6’4’ presence on the mound is an intimidating sight for hitters. When he is fully developed, his repertoire should include a nasty slider and an off the charts fastball. Everyone raves about his big-time stuff. Agredano has the potential for high-leverage late-inning duties. Signed for $160k.

The IAFA class of 2025 excites me, especially Urbina. He could potentially be the best center fielder in baseball one day. Having him followed by Otten in the lineup one day would make me happy. Barrera and Gonzalez could man our future middle infield, and Agredano could be our future closer. This is, however, if it all pans out.

Subject: Contreras and Solomon Swapped

It took some time to iron out the details, but the Commodores and Monarchs have agreed to a swap. New York will get 30-year old LF Gabe Contreras with Oakland receiving 31-year old RHP Stephen Solomon in return. A source close to the trade talks said the two clubs were initially looking to make a bigger deal, but discussions broke off late last night. The two sides reconvened early today and eventually settled on this deal.

Lifetime Solomon has chalked up a 3-and-5 record with 4 saves and a 2.79 ERA.

**********

Subject: Oakland, New Orleans Agree to Trade

You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you find a deal anyway. The Baseball News Network is reporting that Oakland and New Orleans have made a swap with 20-year old minor league LHP Rick Ackley, 25-year old 1B Justin Wahlberg, and 32-year old LHP Kyle Backus being shipped to the Slammers and in return the Commodores would get 34-year old LHP Paul Gregory.

Oakland general manager Pierre Lemieux said the two sides were close to a blockbuster trade before agreeing upon a smaller scale transaction.
"This is just a bit of housekeeping compared to what we wanted to do," he said. "I won't name names, but the potential deal we were close to making would have certainly grabbed some headlines."

A source inside the Oakland organization said the two sides might not be done dealing, and another transaction could be in the works.

New Orleans will retain a portion of Gregory's remaining contract.

Gregory has pitched in 403 games over his career, registering 1 save and a 128-94 won-lost mark. He has an ERA of 3.35 in 2065 innings and 2218 strikeouts.

**********

The free agent market does not have many appealing relief options left so I turned to the trade market. These trades add some depth to our bullpen for this year. Solomon has 2 options left should he fail to break camp with the big league club, and Contreras was an outfielder without any options left and was not looking like he was going to make the team. Same goes for Backus and Wahlberg, and Ackley is a young reliever with not much potential. Gregory won the LL Pitcher of the Year award in 2017, but has fallen off since then and is now a reliever that will be one of our two lefties from the pen. New Orleans is covering 95% of his $6.3 million salary for this season and he is due to be a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.

It’s the day before spring training and head Scout Daniel Rodriguez came into my office this morning with the final results of our development lab programs:

SS Francisco Rubio, generate batspeed - no improvement
2B Guillermo Salvador, gap power - outstanding, current and potential gap +5
SP Jim Reed, improve control - no improvement
1B Raffale Martinella, generate batspeed - successful, current power +15
SS Jorge Gonzales, plate discipline - successful, current + >5
RP Javier Bueno, improve control - poor, current movement and control - >5
3B Sergej Pijnenburg, quality contact - successful, current BABIP +10
SP Bobby Tyree, improve control - outstanding, current and potential control + >5
2B Do-Hyun Lee, plate discipline - successful, current eye + >5
LF Leo Jimenez, two strike approach - outstanding, current avoid k’s +10, potential avoid k’s + <5

I would say this is a majority good result overall. I’m extremely happy about Martinella as he looks major league ready, which pushes my hand with Felix Reyna. They’ll split time in spring training at first base. The only negative is of course Bueno, but he is young and can improve upon that. Our lineup looks a lot better with these improvements.

2025 Spring Training Recap

Our record was 21-7 (great!). The injury bug hit us hard (not great!).

CF Jose Flores is out for 2 weeks (as of opening day) with a sore shoulder he sustained early on in spring training.

RHP Andy Reilly suffered a sprained ankle midway through spring training and his recovery time is unknown.

RHP Bobby Tyree also suffered an injury in the middle of spring, he has a strained shoulder and is out for 2 more weeks. He was competing for the last rotation spot but will now start the season in AAA.

RHP Josh Ditzel suffered a fractured coracoid (shoulder) and is out for 5 months.

Juan Molieri was signed towards the end of spring training as I realized I needed another backup infielder. He has a captain personality which helps offset a few of the negative personalities we currently have.

There are 92 players on the waiver wire, however none are of any interest.

I’m still working on our final opening day roster and will include player profiles once all is confirmed and submitted to the league office. This part of the job is hard!

Subject: Regular Season Preview – Oakland Commodores (2024: 79-83, 3rd)

Pierre Lemieux is the newest man to be given the reins of GM of the Oakland Commodores and the early signs are in the right direction, according to us writers. Can he help Oakland return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017? We think so, projecting their 2025 season record at 92-70 and winning the Liberty League West Division. A new look outfield and revamped bullpen is a plus for the Commodores, however the rotation overall is still a question.

Key Acquisitions: RF Miguel Navarro, LF Leo Jimenez, CL Mike Ressler
Important Losses: RF Seth Small, LF Eric McGuire, 2B Rico Gutierrez
Total WAR Gained/Lost: +3.2, 4th in UBL

Rotation: This could be what bites Oakland in the butt. We have Tom Luther finishing runner up in Pitcher of the Year voting this season, and the Commodores have a good #2 in Jim Reed, who they are hoping can continue to develop following a third place finish in rookie of the year voting. Dan Pierce, Glenn Bain and rule 5 pick Steve Sasso round out the rotation in what still needs improvement for Oakland. Oakland lacks a real #3, as in our opinion Pierce is at best a #4 starter on a playoff team at best, and Bain and Sasso are innings eaters. Bobby Tyree and Gordon Holsapple were both given opportunities to win a spot in spring, however both were injured and will start in AAA once healthy.

Bullpen: The bullpen has improved compared to last year with the acquisitions of Mike Ressler and the now injured Andy Reilly. Javier Bueno, Justin Devlin and Jamal Anderson return again this year, and are joined by newly acquired Stephen Solomon, Paul Gregory, Nick Bakken, and Jonathan Bettis. Josh Ditzel will return sometime in August/September, and there is not much depth beyond them.

Catcher: Marçall Camacho returns behind the plate for Oakland and remains their best player overall. He can opt out of the remaining 3 years of his contract following this season, it remains to be seen if Oakland will try to re-sign him if he does, or if they will trade him if they don't get off to a hot start. Ronnie Hatton will back him up again this year, and while he won’t hit for much he’ll call a good game behind the plate. Newly acquired Javy Rodriguez will start in AAA.

Infield: Felix Reyna beat out Raffale Martinella to win the first base job in spring training, but Martinella is almost ready. Guillermo Salvador has been given the keys to second base following the offseason trades of Rico Gutierrez and Jim McAfee. Sergej Pijnenburg returns to third base, and Jorge Gonzales will look to capitalize at short given the full time role as he attempts to hold off #1 prospect Francisco Rubio. Javier Rodriguez and Juan Molieri will serve as backups. Aside from Rubio in the minors, middle infielder Do-hyun Lee is almost ready, but does not have a real starting spot as of now.

Outfield: This is where Oakland really saw their changes this offseason. LF Leo Jimenez and RF Miguel Navarro create a strong young outfield with CF Andoni Barlini. Also newly acquired Jorge Flores would’ve been the starting center fielder, however a spring training injury sees him starting the season on the IL. Edgar Melendez returns as backup, and Neil Calkins cracks the opening day roster. Luis Navarro will spend yet another year in AAA, his 3rd in a row.

Minor League Update
We have the #3 farm system in the UBL headlined by the leagues #1 prospect in SS Francisco Rubio. Our other top 100 prospects are #29 1B Raffale Martinella, #55 CF Alfredo Urbina, #56 RHP Marco Gudino, #65 2B Jorge Alcala, #68 LF Chase Bolin, and #96 CF Omar Garcia. The future is bright!

I like to have a hands-on approach when it comes to our farm system and those that show real future potential. I’ve created 2 shortlists: one for our top prospects and one for our mid prospects. I’ll check these lists at the start of each month leading up to the all star break, and once more after the trade deadline and will make adjustments accordingly. I like to see prospects over succeed at each level as I find it helps with their development (one of the things I learned as an analyst!). However, I’m a lot quicker to promote players on our top prospects list should they show appropriate development.

My lists must've gotten lost somewhere in my office, I can't seem to find any screenshots of them. I'll have to set a reminder in June to send them over before the draft...

Subject: Personal Message from the Owner – Season Expectation

Pierre,

Welcome to your first regular season as GM. I hope that the off-season has treated you well! I’ve been very intrigued by the articles written about us this offseason so I’m very hopeful for this season! I hope you’re keeping in mind the goals I set for you in our initial meeting. You need to be hitting those. However, I’ve been told to calm my expectations a little bit, so this is also a reminder that the team should play .500 ball.

Good Luck!

Johnny Shelby

**********

Pierre,

Well done, you’ve managed to keep my dad relatively calm. I appreciate you keeping us in the loop with your offseason moves. The team looks strong! I haven’t said that in awhile, it feels weird. Best of luck this year!

Evan Shelby

Opening Day Lineup

A meeting with manager Zach Bourdon, bench coach Ji-e Ju and myself saw us discussing player roles for this upcoming season. We ultimately decided on this lineup for opening day.

Miguel Navarro, RF
Marçall Camacho, C
Leo Jimenez, LF
Felix Reyna, 1B
Jorge Gonzales, SS
Guillermo Salvador, 2B
Sergej Pijnenburg, 3B
Andino Barlini, CF

This is the main lineup vs righties. Jimenez and Gonzales will switch places vs lefties.Calkins will play every other game in center until Flores is back healthy.

The rotation will be Tom Luther, Jim Reed, Dan Pierce, Glenn Bain, Steve Sasso in that order. Ressler takes the closer role, Anderson will be a right handed specialist, and Bakken a left handed specialist. Everyone else will be designated as a middle relief role.

Financial Forecast - Our player salaries total up to $121,622,000 (ranked 28th), and total expenses just under $190 million. Projected revenue is $169 million, and projected revenue sharing is $33 million. With the ownership group taking $11 million, we have a projected final balance of $1.2 million, much lower than the $27 million Mr. Shelby wants. Hopefully our play on the field will make him happy. Fan interest starts the season at 47 with medium loyalty in a average market size.
