The View from the Gangplank: June 1, 1916
Another strong month sees us go 20-9 with all aspects of our game humming along nicely.
![]() ![]() Cobb has started the year brilliantly, hitting 400 for May and winning the monthly award. Baker is back to his best and Charleston, while still as inconsistent as you'd expect a 20-year-old to be, is coming along nicely. ![]() The pitching has been pleasantly consistent with little of the regression I'd feared. Mays settles right down after his rocky April and wins the NL Rookie of the Month Award. ![]() The two big surprises standings-wise are the poor performances to date of the World Champion Browns and, even more so, the Braves, who sit at a nasty 14-29. The White Sox are surprising on the upside among the leading group in the AL with the BoSox and Sens. We have a narrow lead over the Jints, but I'd keep an eye on the Redbirds. They look like the main danger in the NL this year. ![]() Awards, news, leaders. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() S+ HOME REPORTS HOME PIRATES HOME

Frankly, Mr Corridon...
... I'm impressed.
![]() That is the 18th no-no in 16 seasons, which compares poorly with the historical. In the corresponding IRL period there were 36. Jack Powell is the only pitcher to this point with two.

In the post-match interview...
... Gardner said he was "happy" with his performance.

The View from the Gangplank: July 1, 1916
The early part of June sees us make a run for it with 12 wins from our first 13 including a four-game road sweep over the Giants, our nearest rivals at that point, and 10 straight until we drop both games of a DH at the Braves. Groh is suspended for 5 games after an incident early in that series (a reckless act and, with Rube Foster on the mound, perhaps a foolhardy one as well...), and it seems to throw us off balance as we lose 4 of the games he misses and let the Cards creep up on us a bit with an untidy 4-6 finish to the month. We end up 18-8 for the period.
![]() Still, the squad plays some great baseball, led by a rampant Baker who hits 404 for the sectional and deservedly wins the monthly award. Mays wins his second straight Rookie gong. ![]() ![]() We'll need to keep on doing so, as the Cards do not look like they are going away anytime soon. The BoSox and Sens seem destined for a vicious dogfight down the stretch in the junior circuit. ![]() Awards, news, leaders. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() S+ HOME REPORTS HOME PIRATES HOME

I've never counted up the no hitters. I probably should. In one of my sims Harvey Haddix got a no hitter in a World Series game which considering real life I figure is most deserving.

I was surprised at how many there had been IRL over that period. I though the save number would be well closer.

This probably isn't the right term for this, but number of no hitters isn't a direct statistic. What I mean is that it isn't an input. Strikeouts, HRs, etc are inputs. They're in the league totals.
So with that situation it is possible your sim produced the most likely outcome and real life did not.

I guess I presumed that with all the high contact hitting and bunting in those early years they'd be harder to procure than in the current TTO environment where the concept of situational hitting is non-existent. I'm eagerly awaiting how the comparison is over the full date range for my save vs historical. I should add there have been a BUNCH of one-hitters thrown. But not a one perfecto - vs two IRL, one by the Mighty Cy in '04 and one by Addie Joss in '08.

The View from the Gangplank: August 1, 1916
We keep doing what we need to with a nice 21-6 July that puts us at 71-29 for the season to date.
![]() Cobb, who wins another monthly batter award, has an astonishing 196 OPS+ for the month. ![]() Despite our good play, we still aren't entirely free of the Cards, who remain well and truly fixed in our rear-vision mirror like some vehicular apparition. The Red Sox find themselves in a similar position with the Sens, who sit just 5 back after weathering an early-month win string of 11 by the Bostonites, who must by now be getting the heebie-jeebies from their rival's persistence. ![]() Awards, leaders, news - full recap at end August ahead of the stretch run. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() S+ HOME REPORTS HOME PIRATES HOME

Our Ruby Gold on the Diamond
Just a pesky HBP and a walk from the league's first perfecto. A GIDP and a couple CS meant he faced the min.

The View from the Gangplank: September 1, 1916
Not quite home yet but certainly breathing a bit easier after a 19-9 August.
![]() I think two elements of our play this season really stand out. The first is the even spread of contribution throughout the entire squad. Not a man has been downright poor. Only two have negative WAR. That said, I have flipped Mamaux into Adams's spot in the spin, as he just started getting the wobbles. ![]() ![]() ![]() The second, no doubt a direct corollary of the first, is how consistent we have been, results-wise; how we have ground out the wins and bounced back quickly from losses. Thru end August, we only lose 3 straight on one occasion. That is the main reason we sit where we do, more than a dozen games clear of the cards. The Sox' and Sens' battle rages on, with just 3 between them to the good of Boston as we enter the stretch. ![]() Awards, news, leaders - fingers crossed you won't hear from me again until the regular season is over, tidbits aside. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() S+ HOME REPORTS HOME PIRATES HOME

The View from the Gangplank: end of regular season, 1916
We play a bit tight in early September and this race never feels as cut and dried as the standings project but in the end we lock down our second NL Pennant in a row with 11 games to play. Any joy, however, is short-lived when, as was the case last season, we lose our winning feeling at the worst possible time. We drop 6 in a row – the first time we’ve lost more than 3 straight all year – and 8 of our last 9. Worse, we play horribly in every facet of the game. Not the form you want entering the World Series and boy did I read them the riot act a number of times.
![]() ![]() ![]() Cobb wins his 7th overall batting title with a 344 BA and also leads the NL with 64 SB. Baker's 105 RBI leaves him tied for 1st with Hornsby (the NL MVP battle between these two should be incredibly tight), while Vickers leads both leagues with 30 wins and Cooper's 2.24 mark nets him the NL ERA title. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our late fade means we only just break the season record for wins with 104 by a single game and finish 10 clear of the Cards although, as I said, it never felt that wide a margin. Once again it is across in the junior circuit where all of the excitement is derived, as the AL race literally goes down to the wire. With the two sides entering the final day tied, Boston beats the A’s 4-2 and Washington loses 10-7 to the Yanks, handing the Red Sox the pennant. ![]() News and final leaders. Back to preview what shapes up as an epic World Series in a bit. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() S+ HOME REPORTS HOME PIRATES HOME
