July 1972 Recap

Down in the Transit League, the FRC National has bunched right up after a so-so month for the Indy Clowns. The other three divs are somewhat more cut-and-dried, but only Louisville's lead looks impenetrable just yet.

  • CAC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Terry Shumpert (Eagles) 375 / 2 HR / 22 RBI.
  • CAC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Andy Rincon (Stars) 4-1 / 1.55 / 38 K / 58 IP.
  • FRC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Johnny Washington (Wolves) 423 / 5 HR / 23 RBI.
  • FRC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Pasqual Coco (Bears) 5-1 / 2.09 / 35 K / 43 IP.

Rijo on the Go

The Black Yankees have put a bit of a break between themselves and the Crawfs and Dodgers, but certainly not one that is insurmountable just yet. The two chasing clubs play out a doozy of a pitching duel here, with Jose Rijo's one-hit gem good enough to get Pittsburgh the 1-0 win over Edwin Jackson.

EL Featured Game #8, 1972

Wednesday 16th August, 1972 – Indianapolis ABCs (66-49) @ Kansas City Monarchs (58-56)

8.05pm ET, Muehlebach Field, Kansas City MO

There's still time, but this season may well pan out to be a case of so close and yet so far for our two teams tonight. All the same, both will be very much encouraged by the forward steps they have taken this campaign and comfortable with where they are headed from here, particularly the visiting ABCs.

While the Mons enter tonight's game with a record barely above .500, it is undoubtedly an improvement for a club that is yet to finish a season in the black. That they have done so while two of their offensive spearheads - Fernando Tatis jr and Lourdes Gurriel jr, the "Junior Jammers" to KC fans - are having slightly underwhelming campaigns is another positive sign.

The aforementioned history of poor performance has allowed them to accumulate an excellent young bunch with one of the best rotations in the EL led by Juan Marichal, and one just feels that in a year or two when most of these guys are hitting their peak, the Mons will be one of the dominant forces in the league.

Their starter tonight bears one of my favourite names in all of baseball. I love seeing it on the recaps and yelling out to nobody in particular "Jair Jurrjens" at a volume and in a distorted way that must make my neighbours think I am Tourettic.

Born in Curaçao and the first Dutch Antillean to ever pitch in the bigs, Jair put together a decent enough IRL career in the 2000s and 2010s, mainly for the Braves, finishing with a 53-38 record, 109 ERA+ and just under 11 WAR. 6.5 of those were in 2009 alone, but his decline from these lofty heights was precipitous and things ended poorly for him with a suspension for a positive testosterone test while playing in the littles in 2017.

In the EL, the Mons snapped Jair up in the 3rd Round (42nd overall) of the 1970 Draft, a lower pick that is proving ever more astute. After a 7-9 / 3.09 rookie campaign, he has hit his straps this season and enters this game at 14-10 / 2.83 with more than 4 pWAR to his name.

We profiled his opponent Jim Missouri back in 1970, which can be read HERE. Jim ended up leading the WC in ERA that year, his first in the EL, and has continued to hold his own in the time since, putting together 42 wins against 40 losses with an ERA+ of 109.

The two look like this head-to-head:

I doubt anyone would argue against the fact that the ABCs have been the EL's big improver this season. And yet you can also understand if there's a general reluctance to see Indy as the real deal. After all, they had a fantastic 1970 only to regress horribly last year. Still, their only major metric in the bottom half is SB, with all others well-entrenched in the top 3, and they have a bunch of studs such as Rod Carew, Jim Rice, Ozzie Albies and Richard Hidalgo, none of whom is older than 26, and young corner IF Todd Allen could prove to be their equal if early signs are fair indication of his talents. Their rotation is workmanlike but effective, and in Will Harris they have one of the EL's premier firemen. I'm eager to see this squad strut its stuff over the next few years.

OK, time for the first pitch. Here's how they'll be lining up for it:

The ABCs open the scoring in the 2nd as Ozzie Albies triples and comes home on a sac fly by catcher Alex Avila.

That run holds until the home side puts a rally together in the 4th, tying the game on a single by Gerry Davis, but Missouri manages to keep it at that.

With both hurlers looking strong and very little action on the bases to this point, the game enters the final frames with the tie still in place.

The ABCs regain the lead in the 8th when Eddie Miller walks to lead it off and comes all the way around on a long triple by Rod Carew, who then scores on a Rice SF to make it 3-1.

With his side still two to the good, ABCs Closer Will Harris relieves Missouri for the 9th to face the meat of the Mons order. Tatis jr shows the two sides of youthful exuberance, belting one to the wall only to then make the cardinal error of getting thrown out trying for three by a bullet from CF Eddie Milner. His mistake becomes all the more painful when Lourdes Gurriel jr smacks an opposite field solo shot.

The tension ratchets up another notch when, after giving up a double to Gerry Davis, Harris has to leave the game injured. Mike Fornieles replaces him and gets the second out, with Davis moving to third on the play and representing the tying run. Jimmie Lyons then comes through in the clutch with a single to make it a 3-3 game.

Off to extras we go, with Carlos Marmol taking over on the mound for the home side. He proceeds to give up the lead again on a single by Rice followed by a Hidalgo double.

This time, the Mons have nothing as Fornieles locks down the win with a 1-2-3 inning.

One of the best games we've seen so far featuring two young clubs who are undoubtedly hitting their straps. Don't be surprised to see them duking it out in the Championship decider at some point in the next few years.

News from the Transit Lounge

Brooklyn hurler Julio Santana has given the TL its third no-hitter for the season and fourth overall, whitewashing the Black Crackers in a 2-0 win for the Eagles.

Although Harlem has slowed in recent weeks, the Brooky boys look like they'll run out of games to catch them in the Catto American. Still, they will improve upon their first year's performance and that should give them plenty of momentum for '73 and beyond.

August 1972 Recap

A withering run by the ABCs has them within a game of the staggering Buckeyes in the WC National. Indy goes 20-7 for August and is currently riding an eight-game win streak, whereas Cleveland can only manage a 15-12 sectional to give us at least one tight race to follow. The Black Barons are home and hosed in the FC National unless they completely implode, while the Black Yankees seem to have Newark and Pittsburgh's measure once again in the FC American. The A's are 4 games up in the WC National, but those pesky Lincoln Giants are showing all the heart in the world and simply refuse to lie down.

  • FC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Adolfo Phillips (Bacharach Giants) 381 / 5 HR / 24 RBI.
  • FC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Ricky Nolasco (Red Sox) 6-1 / 1.52 / 42 K / 65 IP.
  • FC ROOKIE OF THE MONTH: Willie Gisentaner (Black Yankees) 4-1 / 2.80 / 28 K / 45 IP.
  • WC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Chino Smith (Athletics) 323 / 3 HR / 16 RBI.
  • WC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Lefty Williams (American Giants) 5-2 / 1.35 / 28 K / 60 IP.
  • WC ROOKIE OF THE MONTH: Will Harris (ABCs) 3-0 / 1.84 / 8 SV / 7 K / 14.2 IP.

The Transit League is approaching the end of the 1972 regular season, and I'll recap that separately. In the meantime, here is August's best of the bunch:
  • CAC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Martin Prado (Blue Birds) 495 / 9 HR / 38 RBI.
  • CAC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Luis Andujar (Browns) 5-1 / 2.67 / 36 K / 64 IP.
  • FRC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Willie Upshaw (Hornets) 370 / 4 HR / 21 RBI.
  • FRC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Vicente Amor (Hornets) 5-1 / 1.61 / 33 K / 50.1 IP.

The Duke of Earle

Hilldale needs to keep it going as it looks like the Lincoln Giants are going to push them all the way in the WC American this season. Games like this beauty from Charles Earle will come in very handy in this regard.

News from the Transit Lounge: End of 1972 regular season

A drama filled finish to the 1972 TL season as the defending Champion Harlem Stars, who look to be cruising to the Catto American title, lose seven straight to fall a game behind the Brooklyn Eagles entering the final game. They beat Columbus 9-5 and the Eagles lose 5-1 to Chattanooga, meaning a tiebreaker is required.

Harlem wins that 4-1 to proceed to the post-season, leaving the final standings and playoff tree looking like this:

EL Featured Game #9, 1972

Friday 15th September, 1972 – Birmingham Black Barons (80-61) @ St. Louis Giants (65-76)

8.05pm ET, Giants Park, St. Louis MO

Two clubs seemingly headed in opposite directions on show tonight as the ascendant Black Barons head to the Gateway City to take on the struggling Giants.

The trend is fairly clear for St. Louis - after winning the FC National the first two years including that famous Championship in '68, they have steadily progressed down the standings with each subsequent year and look set for a second-division finish yet again in 1972.

The fact that they are one of the smallest-market clubs in the EL really isn't a valid excuse just yet, given we're still to see the full effect of free-agency take hold. Hate to say it, but a general apathy within the club's top brass - almost certainly derived from those early successes - is the more likely culprit, and they are going to have to get a whole lot smarter in this regard moving forward or else face many long and lean campaigns and fan disgruntlement.

No signs of this evident yet, however, with three of their biggest names - Hi Bocachica, George Scott and Aaron Judge - still unsigned past this year. This might be acceptable were their coffers filled with suitable replacements, but that is anything but the case, with only Junior Felix worth any sort of attention among their prospects.

Not a great time to be a Giants fan, I'm afraid.

They send Jae-weong Seo to the mound tonight, whose form over the years has mirrored that of his club. Winner of the first FC Stovey Medal in the league's inaugural season, his WAR totals have been in decline ever since. While he has turned that metric around this year to some degree (3 pWAR to this point), some of his other metrics aren't so pretty and he enters tonight at 12-13 with a fairly nasty ERA+ of just 78. You get all the data you need to know by looking at one stat: K/BB, which has nearly halved over the course of his career.

JW's opponent tonight is perhaps the most enigmatic player the EL has ever seen. Rookie Manuel Garcia Carranza, "Cocaína" Garcia as he is known professionally, was drafted 34th overall by the BBs in last year's Draft and sent to work immediately.

And, boy, what work he has been doing.

Not quite Shotime '69 sort of numbers, but he has acquired a similarly cult-like following as his Japanese confrere thanks to his exploits with both bat and ball, as you can see from this screenshot:

IRL, Cuban-born Cocaína played during the 1920s and '30s in the NeL, mainly for the various clubs involved with his homeland, then left America and became a star in the DR and Mexico. So travelled was this second act that, rather than try and cover it here, I'll instead refer you to his BBRef Bullpen page if you are interest in learning more.

His Black Barons are headed for the playoffs again, and look a much better chance of knocking off the mighty Black Yankees this time than last year, a matchup that is all but guaranteed. Aside perhaps from Gary Pettis they still undoubtedly lack the BYs' polish and certainly don't share their depth, but the general scrappiness of this Birmingham group compensates mightily for that, with gamers like Willson Contreras, Ozzie Virgil jr and Luis Medina just hitting their peak and always unwilling to take a backward step or be intimidated. They are almost invariably a fun club to watch.

And so, despite there being little on the line and what looks a glaring mismatch in tonight's game, I doubt it will be uneventful.

Here's a more detailed comparison of our two moundsmen:

And here, for interest's sake, is how Señor Garcia matches up with Ohtani-san in both hitting and pitching at present:

OK, here's tonight's lineups and we are ready for the first pitch.

The home side draws first blood in the 2nd, when Judge singles and Willie Kirkland belts a Garcia splitter into the opposite-field bleachers for a 2-run jack. They extend their lead in the next on two singles and a sac fly by Yasmani Grandal.

While Garcia is struggling, Seo looks sharp as he allows just two hits over the first four frames. Then, however, he leaves one hanging and Gates Brown doesn't miss it, making it 3-1 with a big solo shot. But the Giants hit straight back, with Luis Garcia doubling Seo all the way from first after he had led off with a base hit.

But, as I said in the preview, this BBs side rarely takes it lying down, and they get within a run in the top 6th on a 2-run big fly by Luis Medina, his 13th of the year.

The action continues apace as Judge leads off the home half with a line-drive double. He moves to third on a one-out single by Michael Taylor and scores on an Orlando Arcia SF to make it 5-3.

Garcia is replaced by Alfredo Aceves to start the 7th but, somewhat surprisingly, doesn't stay in the game. He gets a clean inning and the BBs bats get to work, with singles to Luis Mercedes and Pettis putting the tying runs aboard with none out. A groundout by pinch-hitter Gary Matthews jr brings one in but Seo holds his nerve and keeps it at that.

Then Aceves gets into all sorts of trouble, loading the bases with none down on a walk sandwiched by two hits. When the BBs turn an amazing 1-2-3 double play, it looks like they have negated the threat, but Arcia has different ideas on that theory, belting a 3-run homer to all but end it at 8-4.

After he gives up a single to Jackie Bradley to lead off the top 9th, Seo's night is done, with Eduardo Rodriguez summoned from the bullpen to close it out. He does just that to get the Giants home.

Well, this one didn't disappoint, although that will no doubt be the sentiment among Birmingham fans. Still, for the neutrals, this was one of the more entertaining games we've featured so far.

EL Featured Game #10, 1972

Wednesday 27th September, 1972 – Cuban Stars West (70-82) @ Cuban Stars East (71-81)

7.05pm ET, Griffith Stadium, Washington DC

Well, we've perhaps saved the best for last in this run of featured games as tonight we bring you the final game in the fifth iteration of "El Clàsico".

Sadly, neither of Los Clubs Cubanos are having much of a good time this year, with both eliminated already and all but guaranteed of losing seasons. Still, this rubber remains alive after the East got a 3-2 walkoff win last night to square the series, so there's sure to be plenty of spice tonight. Perhaps even more so than if one or both sides were in the playoff hunt.

Almost certainly the last we'll see of some of the bigger names in their current uniforms. Both Cuban clubs are small in the financial sense and cannot afford the free-agent salary demands of many of their stars. For the East, Carlos Zambrano, Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez are among those whose contracts are set to expire. The West has locked Juan Soto, Big Papi Ortiz and Bryan Clark down for varying lengths of time, but Todd Cruz and Charlie Neal look to be headed elsewhere.

The East has Chet Brewer going for him tonight, one of the league's many NeL players. Chet made his name during the pre-WW2 years with the Monarchs, for whom he went 62-38 over his various stints. A truly well-travelled player, Jim Riley claims he played in 44 US states as well as various other countries and territories in the region, and he made it all the way to the minors - albeit in the twilight of his storied career - with cameos for the Porterville Comets of the SW Indy League and the Visalia Cubs of the California League in 1952, his last year in professional baseball. As a player, that is, because he then spent three decades as a scout, most notably for the Pirates where he formed a very close bond with the great Roberto Clemente.

Chet's EL incarnation entered the league via the 1969 Draft, where he was taken 15th overall by his current club. Since then, he has forged a record of 18-15, with most of those decisions incurred in the current season.

Chet's opponent tonight is another NeLer in southpaw Oscar Estrada. Unlike Chet, Cuban-born Oscar's NeL career was short and sweet, consisting of just 67 IP over three seasons and a 1-6 record. An EL rookie, Oscar has been impressive in his debut campaign, entering tonight's game at 17-20 with a very tidy 2.97 ERA (112 ERA+) - good enough for 7 pWAR and counting, which should earn him some RoY love come awards time.

Here's a head-to-head comparison of the two:

And here's tonight's lineups:

Plenty of atmosphere in the ground despite the disappointing crowd of just over 10000, and let's hope they get a good show. Vamos!

Immediate problems for Brewer, as the West gets to him in the 1st. Rookie sensation Juan Samuel knocks in one with a double and another two-bagger by Juan Soto brings home two more. Todd Cruz then singles Soto in and Rico Washington bombs out a big fly and, just like that, it is 6-0.

The home side gets one of them straight back on an Adrian Gonzalez solo shot, but an out of sorts Brewer gets a very early hook applied after giving up a leadoff single in the 2nd to Val Dreke. Devern Hansack takes over and gets them out of the inning without conceding.

Things settle down for a few innings until Estrada runs into strife in the 4th, loading the bases, but he gets Jose Maria Fernandez to ground out and end the threat, keeping the 6-1 line intact. It is still intact when Hansack finishes up in the 6th, replaced by Henry Strickland, with two out and a man on first.

Dreke is the first batter he faces, and he belts a long double to score the runner and increase the West's lead.

From there a thoroughly disappointing contest fizzles out, with the only real highlight an absolute moonshot by Samuel in the 9th to give is a final score of 8-2 and narrow the East's lead in this annual matchup to 3-2. Oscar Estrada, who goes the distance for the victors, is named Player of the Game.

What a let-down, not the way I was hoping our coverage of the season would end. That's showbiz for ya! See you next season for more EL action.

September 1972 Recap

Just a handful of games to go and I'll recap fully at the end of the reg; before then perhaps if the two tight races stay that way to the finish.

Here's how things stand right now across all four associations:

Sadly no H2H matchup to really amp up the suspense but you can't have everything.

Here are the award-winners for September.
  • FC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Luis Medina (Black Barons) 384 / 6 HR / 18 RBI.
  • FC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Ricky Nolasco (Red Sox) 6-1 / 1.84 / 43 K / 58.2 IP.
  • FC ROOKIE OF THE MONTH: Claude Grier (West) 2-1 / 2.45 / 7 SV / 13 K / 14.2 IP.
  • WC BATTER OF THE MONTH: Charles Earle (Athletics) 347 / 7 HR / 17 RBI.
  • WC PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Felipe Paulino (Athletics) 6-1 / 2.33 / 32 K / 46.1 IP.
  • WC ROOKIE OF THE MONTH: Leon Day (Grays) 3-2 / 1.45 / 17 K / 49.2 IP.

It's a Drag Down Hoedown Showdown!

Three of the playoff races are safely in the bag, with Birmingham, Hilldale and Cleveland all having booked their spots.

That leaves the FC American, which is the one race that looked settled a while back with New York seemingly having seen off the challenges of both Pittsburgh and Newark. But the BYs, usually so relentlessly clinical, have shown they are only human and fallen into a colossal hole that has seen them not just caught but passed by the Dodgers with just four to play - three, in fact, for the BYs. The Dodgers aren't having things all go their own way, mind you, with Edwin Jackson lost for the season to an ab strain.

So let's track this one to its conclusion.

A quick standings check before we begin.

Friday, October 6th
  • Newark 5 v Atlantic City 4 (14) - the Dodgers come back for a crucial walkoff win to reduce their MN to 3.
  • New York 2 v Baltimore 1 - the BYs barely escape as well, needing a 2-run single in the 8th from pitcher Willie Gisentaner to get the tight win.

Saturday, October 7th
  • Newark 6 v Atlantic City 1
  • New York 2 v Baltimore 3

And, just like that, the Dodgers are within one of their maiden playoff appearance.

Sunday, October 8th
  • Newark 5, Atlantic City 4
  • New York 9 v Baltimore 2

With the BYs having won in an afternoon game, the pressure is all on the Dodgers. And they tighten noticeably, trailing 4-1 entering the bottom 8th. But back-to-back 2-run HR by Jim Gilliam and then Quilvio Veras give them a 5-4 lead and Sixto Sanchez's 27th save of the year delivers that coveted triumph without the ordeal of a must-win Game 162 against the ABCs.

1972 Regular Season Summary

A walkoff loss for the Dodgers to the ABCs in their makeup game leaves the final standings looking thus:

From September 1, Newark goes 24-9 to the BYs 16-18.

Juan Marichal finishes with an EL-record 12.8 pWAR, the only new mark set this season other than Hanley Ramirez's 44 CS.

Don Baylor (FC; 313) and Rod Carew (WC; 319) win the batting titles - the first for each. In a very pitching-heavy season indeed, Ken Singleton's 26 homers edge Shotime's 25 for the most in the league, while Pops Stargell is the only player with 100+ ribbies, and him only passing that figure by one.

Patricio Scantlebury has the most wins with 25, Leroy Matlock's 2.09 ERA is the lowest, Carlos Zambrano is the King of K with 304, and Ossie Brown and Will Harris tie for the most saves with 42.

I can't wrap this up without mentioning two exceptional performances with both bat and ball.

Shohei Ohtani continues to astound, exceeding 20 in both wins and HR, while racking up a combined WAR total of 14.4.

Meanwhile, Martin Dihigo has his best overall season to date, winning 21 and putting up a combined 12.9 WAR.

Here are the final Top 20s:

Hitters - Overall

Hitters - NeLers

Pitchers - Overall

Pitchers - NeLers

And the final news and leaders for the season.

1972 EL Conference Championship Series

Fleet Conference

Newark Dodgers (98-64) v Birmingham Black Barons (92-70)

Best of seven, Dodgers with home-field advantage.

  • The Dodgers see off a dogged Birmingham side in six enthralling games despite the outstanding pitching of Jim Jeffries.
  • The Game 6 clinch is one that will go down in Dodgers folklore for all eternity, as Newark come from behind in the 8th and then again in the 12th before Yoshi Tsutsugo puts them into the World Series in the bottom of the 14th with a leadoff, walkoff home run.
  • Newark LF Herman Dunlap hits 458 with 3 RBI to take MVP honours.

Weldy Conference

Cleveland Buckeyes (98-64) v Hilldale Athletics (88-74)

Best of seven, Buckeyes with home-field advantage.

  • The Buckeyes' reputation for shakiness under pressure will only be enhanced by their performance here, as they take a 3-2 lead back to Cleveland but can't close it out and the Athletics win it in seven.
  • Game 1 is as good as they get, as the A's come all the way back from an early 0-5 deficit to tie it in the 9th and send it into extra innings. The tow sides exchange a run in the 12th before the Buckeyes finally win it in the next on a walkoff solo shot by Cesar Hernandez, his second of the game.
  • This engrossing contest gets a fitting finale as Dave Brown and Shohei Ohtani duke it out for eight scoreless before the A's go ahead in the top 9th on a two-out single by Eric Chavez and series MVP Brown completes a legendary five-hitter to put the Hilldale mob into their second straight EL World Series and third overall.
  • Dave Brown's MVP is well-deserved as he goes 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA over 25 innings.

1972 Eclipse League World Series

Newark Dodgers v Hilldale Athletics

Best of seven, Dodgers with home-field advantage.

What a matchup this promises to be, pitting two sides who just don't seem to know how to quit. Because of their more consistent offence and a pitching staff that has been here before and looks to be in peak form just at the right time, I'm tipping the A's to win it all in six.

After it looks as if this is going to be one of those World Series that promises so much yet fails to deliver, the Dodgers come storming back from 3-1 down to take their maiden title in an epic seven-gamer.

The Athletics' pitchers dominate early, with Dave Brown adding another shutout to his impressive playoff resumé in Game 3, but they don't take their chance to close it out at home in Game 5 and then it is Hilldale's bats who go quiet over the final two games as Newark overruns them and finishes it off in emphatic style with a 4-0 whitewash behind Connie Rector.

Relatively unheralded Dodgers 2B Rickie Weeks wins the MVP, hitting 360 with a homer and 2 RBI.

1972 Organisational / Settings / Rule Changes

A few amongst the managerial ranks are given their walking papers:
  • Jim Rittenhouse (Bacharach Giants GM)
  • Nick Jolly (Liberty Stars Manager)
  • Gerry Holt (Motown Stars Manager)

Meanwhile, ownership of the Cuban Stars West franchise has passed to Jason Dietrich. His first task ends up being finding a new pilot after Miles Burgess unexpectedly announces his retirement, leaving the game with a career 417-393 record.

Now that we have enough players, I am making some scheduled changes to a few settings, with rotations moving from 4-man to 5-man and pitcher stamina ticked down to NORMAL.

I am also introducing the DH to both conferences with the Ohtani Rule ON.
