Robert Higgins (1888-1889)

While going down the rabbit hole looking for information on J. Higgins, a black catcher who played for Columbus for a month in 1887, I ended up finding Robert Higgins (https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=higgin004rob), a black pitcher who pitched for Syracuse in 1887 and 1888. He is pictured (along with Moses "Fleet" Walker) in the 1888 Syracuse team photo. Prior to signing with Syracuse, he pitched for the Memphis Eurekas, a prominent colored club in that city. When he signed with Syracuse, the Camden Daily Teleram gave his age as 26 years old. After his two seasons in Syracuse, he returned to Memphis, where he again played for the Eurekas. He worked as a barber in Memphis, for years at 416 Beale street, until his death in 1930. His FindaGrave website (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...robert-higgins) puts his year of birth at 1867, but 1861 (based on an age of 26 when he signed with Syracuse in 1887, and how he looks in the team photo a year later) makes more sense.

The first Lancaster club of 1884 started the season in the Keystone Association. That club dropped out in early June. The Lancaster Ironsides, which had been playing as an independent club, was then able to join the Eastern League. Do we know for certain this club is the club from the Keystone Association? If so, there is a very limited pool of players, and the photo was most likely taken in April or May. A roster of the club was printed in the Lancaster New Era on March 15, 1884 (pg. 4). It lists:
Jos. Hofford, Geo. Wetzel, James Harris, Harry Richardson, P.J. Smith, John W. Hyland, Frank Parker, Charles C. Waitt, Edward Sixsmith, A.G. McCoy, Edward Peek, and Crowley, "a brother of [Bill] Crowley of last year's Athletics and this year's Bostons. Wiatt and Wetzel of that list played in MLB.

It's definitely the 1884 Lancs, I've worked on this one several years ago. Charlie Waitt is in the back row, 2nd from the right along with John Hiland, back row, far left. Chick Hofford is in the front row, left. There are a lot of players I don't have exemplars for on this roster that prevented me from going too much further. The Lancaster Historical Society didn't have any information on this photo when I last reached out to them.

The first photo shows him with the Alexandria Dukes. It's from the Detroit Free Press of May 31, 1978. The second photo shows him in a NY Yankees uniform. It's from the Kansas City Star of March 20, 1978. The third photo also shows him in a Yankees uniform in spring training. He looks more like his dad in this one. It's from the Newark (NJ) Star Ledger of March 22, 1978.

This photo shows him with the Anderson (SC) Braves. It's from the Anderson Independent-Mail of July 13, 1982.

Lawrence "Larry" Rhodes

Signed with the New York Giants as a shortstop out of high school in 1942 but suffered a career ending injury before he ever got called up.

Photo is from the May, 2015 edition of the Baseball in Wartime Newsletter.

Steve Stieb is the brother of major league pitcher Dave Stieb. When I saw Steve's batting record on baseball-reference.com, I was skeptical that he had received an invitation to a big league training camp, but catchers often have an advantage over other position players when it comes to spring camps. Steve was indeed a non-roster invitee with the Atlanta Braves in 1981.

The photo shows him for the most part in a Durham Bulls uniform, but he is sporting an Atlanta Braves cap. He is part of a group of Bulls meeting a teammate at home plate in celebration of a dinger that teammate has just hit. The photo is from the Durham Herald-Sun of August 7, 1980.

P.S. By the way, Lumpkin, check the page where you requested a photo of Ted Fisher. I found one.
