You've inspired me to try this. But I'm going to allow the payroll to vary, based on a 3-year rolling average of wins. If it's 90 or over, I will allow myself 110% of the average team payroll for the previous season. If it's 70 or under I will allow myself 70% of said average. And I will interpolate if it's in the middle.

This is consistent with the history of the Pirates in recent years, they drew well when the team was contending. And this has been true at least since the late 50's when the team finally began to snap out of the doldrums of the postwar years.

He asked for a long term. He's a player I'm happy to do that with. I had to make the total money about what he asked for but I got it spread out the way I like.

Ryan has been good about agreeing to long term deals too.

Makes all the difference in the structure you're maintaining. Lets you know exactly how much money you've got left over to spend for the duration of their contract. The re-sign might be tricky with BALCO Boy, though...

No way to know what will happen. Players sometimes go for years not asking for the sky and then suddenly they want huge money.

By that time the farm will have not produced for several years so the roster should be full of near minimum wage players. There might be enough money left to give Bonds half the payroll!

Dennis Martinez has signed relatively cheaply for years and now suddenly wants big money. OTOH, he hasn't performed as well as I expected until recently either. Anyway unless he drops his demand a lot he's gone next year.
