Game 73: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans
Another solid outing from Sam Leever and a defense that remembered how to cleanly field the ball gave the 5,319 fans a lot to cheer about. In topping the Senators (31-42) by a score of 5 to 1, the Americans (54-19) were firing on all cylinders.
Sam Leever (13-3) was dialed in, allowing just 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 hit batsman; Game Score of 80. He has been a great addition to the rotation and love his consistent play. Rube Waddell (7-11) was tagged with the loss after allowing 5 earned runs on 10 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 47. At the plate, Frank Chance (2 for 4, 2 Runs, 1 RBI, 2 Stolen Bases), Chick Stahl (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base), and Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, 2 Runs) made solid contributions in the win. Player Spotlight: Christy Mathewson
After a somewhat shaky rookie season, Christy Mathewson is putting together a fine sophomore year. The Baltimore Orioles ace recently blanked the Chicago White Sox by a score of 3 to 0 to run his season record to an impressive 13-5, while lowering his ERA to 1.98 on the year. He is the anchor of the staff, and is viewed as one of the top pitchers in baseball.

Game Performance: Jake Stenzel
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jake Stenzel may not be a household name, but he is quickly becoming a player that the opposition has to be weary of. In the most recent game against the Chicago Orphans, Stenzel went 5 for 5 at the plate, smashing a Triple, 4 Singles, scoring 2 Runs, and driving in 4 RBIs. His current slash line is .321/.392/.448 which is good for a 146 OPS+ and 2.3 WAR.

National League Player of the Week
For the 7th time in his short career, Nap Lajoie was named the National League Player of the Week. The Cincinnati Reds dynamo was on fire last week, going 13 for 27 (.481 batting average) with 4 Doubles, 1 Triple, 2 Runs, 4 RBIs, and 2 Walks. With a slash line of .481/.500/.704 and a 247 OPS+, he was able to generate 0.7 WAR for the week. It is worth noting that he is especially feasting on lefthanded pitching so far this season, smashing the ball to the tune of a .513 (40 for 78) batting average.

Game 76: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Bronchos
A tough game to lose! After a competitive 12 1/2 innings of play, shortstop Kid Elberfeld booted two groundballs in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Cleveland Bronchos (37-39) a 5 to 4 win over the Boston Americans (55-21). In picking up the victory, Kid Nichols (8-11) allowed 4 earned runs on 14 hits, 4 walks, and 1 wild pitch to finish with a Game Score of 61. Jesse Tannehill (14-6) took the loss after giving up 5 runs (1 earned) on 13 hits and 2 hit batsmen on 186 pitches; Game Score of 67.
With nearly 13 innings of play, there were several notable hitting lines, including Ed Delahanty (2 for 6, Triple, 1 Run), Zeke Wrigley (2 for 5, 1 Run, 1 Stolen Base), and Jimmy Sheckard (2 for 3, 1 Run) for the Bronchos, while Chick Stahl (3 for 6, 1 Run, 2 Stolen Bases), Jesse Tannehill (3 for 5, 2 Doubles, 1 Run), and John Farrell (2 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI, and 1 Walk) played well for Boston. It is worthy to note that the Americans committed 3 errors, were caught stealing 4 times, left 20 runners on base, and had runners thrown out at 3rd and home during the game -- ouch! Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #12 / Career: #33)

Game 77: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Bronchos
Behind the outstanding pitching of Sam Leever, the Boston Americans (56-21) topped the Cleveland Bronchos (37-40) by a score of 1 to 0.
Leever (14-3) tossed the complete game shutout by allowing 8 hits and 1 walk on 130 pitches to finish with a Game Score of 72. Bill Duggleby finished the final inning, allowing 2 hits on 14 pitches. Despite the low-scoring nature of the game, there were still a few noteworthy hitting performances. For Boston, Ossee Schreckengost (3 for 4, 1 RBI) and Chick Stahl (2 for 3, Double, Walk) played well. For the Bronchos, Ed Delahanty (2 for 4) and Harry Wolverton (2 for 4) made solid contributions to the team. Player of the Game: Sam Leever (Season: #12 / Career: #12)

Game 78: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
The hometown fans were treated to a late-inning rally that saw the Boston Americans (57-21) prevail over the Detroit Tigers (43-35) by a score of 4 to 3.
The ageless wonder Cy Young (15-3) picked up another win by limiting the Tigers to 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, Game Score of 68. That makes 11 consecutive victories since his last lost on April 27th. Togie Pittinger (12-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 13 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 44. At the plate, Boston hitters Bill Lange (3 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 1 Stolen Base), John Farrell (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run), and Fred Clarke (3 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) were locked in. Candy LaChance (1 for 1, Double, 2 RBIs) came up big in a pinch hitting opportunity for the Tigers. Of note, Chick Stahl went 2 for 4 today to raise his batting average to an American League leading .343 mark. Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #10 / Career: #27)

Game 79: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
A crowd of 5,715 fans came out to the ballpark to see a match-up between last year's 2nd place and 3rd place Platinum Pitcher aces. Unfortunately for the home crowd, Detroit (44-35) got the better of Boston (57-22) by a score of 4 to 0.
Doc White (9-13) picked up the win as he shutout the opposition and allowed just 5 hits and 1 wild pitch to finish with a Game Score of 80. Noodles Hahn (12-8) has been struggling as of late gave up 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk over 8 innings of play; Game Score of 55. Reliever Al Orth wrapped things up with a clean final inning in the defeat. The Tigers received offensive help from Dave Fultz (2 for 3, Triple, 1 Run), Hugh Duffy (1 for 1, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Tom Daly (1 for 4, Double, 2 RBIs). The Americans saw John Farrell (2 for 3) and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 3) put the ball in play but were not able to capitalize on their efforts. Player of the Game: Doc White

Game 80: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
This was a prime example of a game that slowly slipped away. While the Tigers (45-35) maintained an early lead, Boston (57-23) remained within striking distance. Yet at the end of the game, the box score showed just how dominate Detroit was.
Nixey Callahan (13-7) picked up the victory by limiting the opposition to 5 runs (3 earned) on 12 hits, 3 walks, and 2 hit batsmen; Game Score of 45. Jesse Tannehill was knocked out of the game after 6 innings of play, allowing7 runs (4 earned) on 12 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score of 26. Duke Esper covered the final 3 innings in relief, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits. With a combined 29 hits, 4 walks, and 3 hit batsmen, there were plenty of action on the base paths. Detroit was led by Freddy Parent (4 for 5, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Mike Donlin (4 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base), Roger Bresnahan (3 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base), and Tom Daly (2 for 5, Double, 3 Runs). The Boston offense was paced by Chick Stahl (3 for 5, 2 RBIs; American League leading .342 batting average), Frank Chance (2 for 5, Double, 2 RBIs), Bill Lange (3 for 5, RBI). The Americans left 23 runners on base, committed 3 errors, and had 5 runners thrown out. Player of the Game: Freddy Parent

Performance Spotlight:
Chicago Orphans catcher Klondike Douglass has now strung together a 20-game hit streak. Not only has he helped his team to a winning record during the streak (12-8), he has raised his batting average from .300 to .323 - nicely done!

Game 81: Boston Americans vs. Baltimore Orioles
Three straight losses and 4-6 in the last 10 games does not have the Americans heading in the right direction. In a game that saw several lead changes, the Baltimore Orioles (48-33) topped the Boston Americans (57-24) by a score of 11-9.
While the match-up had Christy Mathewson (9 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits, 3 walks, 2 hit batsmen, and 1 wild pitch in 7 2/3 innings; Game Score of 26) squaring off against Cy Young (8 earned runs on 12 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 20), it was the teams' respective bullpens that factored into the decision. In picking up the win, Jake Boyd (2-0) pitched 1/3 inning in which he faced 2 batters and allowed 1 hit. Ed Doheny earned his 1st save of the year after pitching a scoreless final inning. Ham Iburg (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings of play. A day with a lot of offense generated some nice hitting performances. For the Orioles, Harry Davis (2 for 5, Home Run, 1 Run, 4 RBIs), Jimmy Bannon (3 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, 1 Stolen Base), Jimmy Collins (2 for 5, Home Run, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), and Christy Mathewson (2 for 3, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI). The Americans were led by Chick Stahl (4 for 5, 2 Doubles, 3 Runs, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk; AL leading .350 batting average), John Farrell (3 for 5, Double, 1 RBI), Frank Chance (3 for 4, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk, 1 Hit by Pitch, 1 Stolen Base), and Fred Clarke (3 for 6, Triple, 1 Run, 3 RBIs, 1 Stolen Base). Player of the Game: Chick Stahl (Season: #4 / Career: #4)

Player Spotlight: Rube Waddell
After a dominating 1901 season, Rube Waddell has struggled at times this year to replicate his prior performance. In a recent game against the the Philadelphia Athletics, Waddell lead his Washington Senators to a 15 to 0 win by limiting the opposition to just 1 hit, striking out 10, and finished with a Game Score of 95.

Game 82: Boston Americans vs. Baltimore Orioles
A much needed win, as the Boston Americans (58-24) topped the Baltimore Orioles (48-34) by a score of 9 to 0.
Boston pitcher Sam Leever (15-3) tossed the complete game shutout, limiting the opposition to just 6 hits and 2 walks to finish with a Game Score of 75 and lower his ERA to 1.74 on the season. Addie Joss (11-11) took the loss, allowing 9 runs (8 earned) on 15 hits and 1 walk in 7 1/3 innings of play; Game Score of 15. Ted Lewis covered the final 1 2/3 innings, scattering 2 hits and 1 walk in his scoreless effort. The Americans were dialed in at the plate, smacking 17 hits and drawing 2 walks in scoring 9 runs. The team was led by Frank Chance (3 for 5, Double, 1 RBI), Kid Elberfeld (3 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base), Chick Stahl (2 for 4, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk), Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), John Farrell (2 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 5, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI). Of note, Baltimore turned a triple play in the 9th inning when Kid Elberfeld grounded to Jimmy Collins, over to Heinie Reitz, and throw to Harry Davis. Player of the Game: Sam Leever (Season: #13 / Career: #13)

Player Development Report
The latest player development report is out and things are not looking good for ace Noodles Hahn. The assessment of scout Dave Radovanovic is that Hahn suffered a decline in his current and potential "stuff" rating. In other news, John Farrell was assessed as having improved his potential eye rating.
