MLB news: Oct. 1 -- Rockies win first division title since 2027
Despite losing to the San Francisco Giants 6-5, the Colorado Rockies will enter the postseason as champions of the National League West Division.
With a 90-71 record, the Rockies lead the tightly-bunched NL West by two games over the Los Angeles Dodgers and three games over the San Francisco Giants with just one game left in the regular season.
Colorado will also be the overall top seed in the NL, as it owns a two-game advantage on the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers.
The postseason berth is the Rockies first since 2031.
Colorado last played in the World Series in 2029, when it defeated the Detroit Tigers to give them their second championship in three seasons.

Player of the Month: Cutter Coffey -- The 30-year-old third baseman hit .280 with four homers, 18 RBIs and 12 runs scored in 25 games. He got on base at a .359 clip and slugged .533.
Starting Pitcher of the Month: Thomas White -- The 30-year-old left-hander went 3-0 in five starts with a 1.31 ERA. He pitched a total of 34.1 innings, during which he struck out 33 and had a 0.58 WHIP.
Relief Pitcher of the Month: Steven Howard -- The 29-year-old left-hander got into 10 games going 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA. He worked a total of 9.2 innings, during which he struck out 14 and had a 1.03 WHIP.

Despite dropping their regular-season finale 9-6 to the Washington Nationals, the Philadelphia Phillies still emerged with the top spot in the National League East Division.
The Phillies finished the season 82-80, just one game ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves.
Philadelphia finished well behind the Colorado Rockies for overall home-field advantage in the NL playoffs. The Rockies wrapped up their regular season at 90-72.
The postseason berth is the first for the Phillies since 2032, and it is their first division crown since 2024.
Philadelphia last reached the World Series in 2022, losing to the Houston Astros.
It hasn't won a World Series since 2008, and it prevailed over the Tampa Bay Rays.
