CBO: PAM's Picks . . . and Mine

In my years of covering baseball, I feel that I have begun to lean a thing or two about it. Over the years, an analysis of PAM's predictions have changed my mind in some ways, but the eye test is few of those aspects that have changed. I know, I know. PAM is a super predictor computer that analyzes thousands (millions?) of possibilities and then uses those outputs to come to a singular consensus. This season, I am trying a bit of an experiment that I would love to revisit during the offseason. I am pitting what I, Nat Wright-Kawolski, has learned about baseball and the CBO versus PAM.

I will start by stating that I do not know where to go with the Railroad League. I look at that league and think that all seven teams are playoff-worthy in some aspect. Every team in the CBO has some strengths and weaknesses, and unpredictable matters like injuries, creature attacks, and
straight up talent rises and dropoffs all make predicting, well, less than predictable.

So, here we go. PAM vs Nat. The battle of the baseball brains. First, since PAM is our official picker, let's look at what she has to compute.

In PAM's predictions for 2317, based on final records picks, the The Slog Ghouls (BL) would be the favorites, taking on the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (ML) in the Sole Survivor Series. Other league picks are Concord in the Institute League and Vault 81 in the Railroad League. The defending champion Gunners are expected to miss the playoffs, while the runners-up, Easy Town, is picked to be the 3rd seed in the North Charles Association.

Brotherhood League

The Ghouls won the Sole Survivor Series in 2314, missed the playoffs in 2315, and then returned as a wildcard team in 2315. Talentwise, The Slog does not look to be the best team in the CBO by a long shot, so picking them as regular season champions is quite the surprise.

Top players for the Ghouls are SS Gavin Deux-Gas and 3B Zap Mast. The outfield is ranked in the bottom half of the league at every position, and the pitching staff is slightly above average.

On the other hand, the Assaultrons as a playoff pick looks to be the correct call, and Easy Town easily looks to be the most-talented team in the NCA. However, pitching is below average, leading to the possibility that the Trons will needs to be consistently good on offense.

Last season's surprise team, Malden, is expected to earn the 6th seed in the playoffs. Like Easy Town, the Grognaks have a prolific offense, but their pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired with SP Hry Caje looking to be the only sure winner throughout the season. No other team in the BL is expected to compete for a playoff spot with Nordhagen Beach surprisingly picked last.

My picks:

I agree with PAM that the three teams picked are playoff teams. I will go with the following order based on my evaluation of talent.
1. Easy Town
2. Malden
3. The Slog
4. Nordhagen Beach
5. Salem
6. County Crossing
7. Nahant

Institute League

PAM has Concord, which finished in 3rd place in 2316 and has made the playoffs three-straight years, to win the league in 2317. One key reason is that the pitching staff is probably the best in the NCA, which also makes the Stags a good pick for its first Sole Survivor Series appearance.

Fort Hagen and Lexington are picked to finish tied for 2nd in the IL and ranks as the 4th and 5th seeds in the playoffs. No other team is expected to compete for a playoff spot, but Starlight is expected to make a jump from 7th to 4th. Sunshine Tidings is the pick to finish in 7th place.

My picks:

While the Stags are worthy of a playoff pick, the offense will really need to step up. Fort Hagen is also a good pitching team, and the Synths are a good all-around team, leading me to believe that both of those teams will have more success than Concord. I also do not think the Chemists are battling for the #1 overall pick, though there are deficiencies in the starting rotation. Cambridge has two really good pitchers in SP Scooter Yaghmour and Bullets Barnes and a rising star in LF Bubbler Mayhem. However, the Coursers needs a lot more production throughout the rest of the squad.

1. Lexington
2. Fort Hagen
3. Concord
4. Bunker Hill
5. Sunshine Tidings
6. Starlight
7. Cambridge

Minuteman League

Jamaica Plain's last playoff appearance was in 2312. Since then, the Red Rockets dropped to 6th, 6th, 4th, and 3rd. And now the top record prediction in the SCA? Let's try to figure out why. There are four really good hitters in the lineup, and . . . that's all I got. Rookie CF Samdean Winchester is expected to break into the lineup, which could add a fifth bat. The starting rotation is close to the bottom in the SCA.

Spectacle Island is the only other team in the ML expected to finish above .500, with Atom surprisingly picked to finish 58-72 despite four-straight playoff appearances, including the ML's regular season title in 2316. Defending champions, Quincy, is expected to also miss the playoffs. Southie is expected to "rise up" to a tie for 6th place with the aging University Point squad.

My picks:

The Cats have a steady offense and a mid-range starting rotation. The Granites (formerly Gunners) have the best rotation in the ML and an offense capable of hanging with most teams, especially behind the bat of 2B Will Hell. Goodneighbor could surprise with its youthful vigor. I just do not see what PAM sees and will pick the Red Rockets to miss the playoffs and finish just above the Claws and Brews. Southie should pick #1 overall again.

1. Quincy
2. Atom
3. Goodneighbor
4. Spectacle Island
5. Jamaica Plain
6. University Point
7. Southie

Railroad League

PAM believes that the RL will be the tightest top-to-bottom league in the CBO, which means wins will be at a premium. Vault 81 is expected to edge both Oberland and Roxbury by a game. FHE and Glowing Sea are both picked to be in the playoff hunt, with Egret at .500 and Diamond City four games under .500.

The Dwellers are the safe pick as the champions in 2315 and the team with the best regular season record in the SCA in 2316 before falling to Quincy in the playoffs. Both Vault 81 and the T-51s just battled for the Nuka Cup, showing that both are geared to win it in 2317, just as they held the two best records in the SCA in 2316.

Picking the Rad Sox to tie for 2nd after a 7th-place finish in 2316 is an interesting one. Rox showed some moxie in the Nuka Cup Tournament by upsetting Concord in the Play-in Round and gave the Granites a ride in the Regional Semifinals. The Sox have missed the playoffs the last four seasons but won it all in 2311.

My picks:

PAM is correct that this league will be tight. I have a lot to consider, but I have no doubt that Vault 81 and Oberland are 1 and 2. On the opposite side, Diamond City's pitching is much too good to finish in last place. FHE seems to have regressed in talent instead of improved, so I do not see the Yao Guai slipping into the playoffs.

1. Vault 81
2. Oberland
3. Diamond City
4. Roxbury
5. Egret
6. Glowing Sea
7. FHE

Playoffs

PAM does not pick the playoffs but would have The Slog over Jamaica Plain in the Sole Survivor Series. Based on records, the Trons and Dwellers would be runners-up in their associations.

For me, I have Easy Town winning the NCA over Lexington, and Vault 81 taking out the T-51s. In the Sole Survivor Series, I pick the Dwellers to return to the top.

Oberland Takes Early Lead in Race to the Top

We have completed our first two weeks of the 21-week 2317 season, and the Oberland T-51s own the top record in our first full update at 10-3. All other league leaders are at 9-4 with one surprise at the top of the standings. Another surprise, Atom, is at the bottom at 2-11. Here are the current team power rankings for the Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Oberland T-51s (150.4, ++)
2) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (129.6, +)

9) Egret Ninjas (101.8, ++)
10) Nahant Celtics (99.8, ++)
11) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (97.8, ++)
12) Malden Grognaks (97.8, o)
13) University Point Deathclaws (97.8, ++)
14) Lexington Synths (93.8, --)
15) Cambridge Coursers (92.8, --)
16) Southie Brews (91.0, --)
17) Vault 81 Dwellers (87.2, ++)
18) Roxbury Rad Sox (84.2, --)
19) Starlight Killers (82.2, -)
20) The Slog Ghouls (81.2, --)
21) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (80.2, --)
22) Goodneighbor Hancocks (70.1, o)
23) FHE Yao Guai (63.3, --)
24) Salem Witch Hats (56.4, ++)
25) Bunker Hill 75ers (50.4, --)
26) County Crossing Bloodbugs (36.6, --)
27) Concord Radstags (32.6, -)
28) Atom Cats (15.7, -)

Brotherhood League

One season ago, Easy Town looked to step up. Despite not winning the BL, the Assaultrons battled through the 6 (The Slog), 2 (Bunker Hill), and 1 (Malden) seeds to make it to their second Sole Survivor Series before getting swept by Quincy. This season, they start out at the top of the BL, currently one game up on Nordhagen Beach. Nahant and Malden are knotted at 7-6 and in 3rd place.

For the Assaultrons, offense has been the biggest factor, currently atop six offensive categories, including runs scored (83). Second-year player and the former 11th-overall pick of the 2314 draft, 3B Halep Gutteridge, leads the charge with a .468/1/10 line. The Trons are not hitting bombs, with LF J.J. Gray (.327/3/12) as the only player with multiple homers. Still, this offense is electric ever at bat. SP Red Eagle (2-0, 2.53) has been the best pitcher thus far.

Institute League

Sunshine Tidings is on a three-game winning streak, pushing the Chemists two games up on a three-way tie for 2nd place: Lexington, Cambridge, and Fort Hagen. Last season's IL champion, Bunker Hill is currently in 6th place.

A year ago, we featured the Radstags in our first update for surprisingly being in 1st place. The Stags maintained a decent record, finishing in 3rd in the IL and settling into the playoffs as the 5 seed. This season, though, has been a disastrous start, just one game above the Cats for the CBO's worst record.

Concord is last in six categories, including runs scored (34), an average of fewer than three runs per game. Only 1B Two Shoes Rivera (.347/4/7) is doing anything on offense. Pitching has been average with the 7th-best runs allowed (63). SP Mel Gorgeous (1-1, 1.53) has been the best pitcher.

Minutemen League

The Quincy (now) Granites finished the 2316 season atop the CBO, sweeping the Assaultrons in the Sole Survivor Series as the 6 seed in the SCA. This season, they have started strong on the road to defending their title, atop the ML. Spectacle Island sits at a game back, while University Point is two back in the list of teams above .500. PAM's ML pick, Jamaica Plain is in 5th, while my 2nd place pick, Atom is in dead last in the CBO.

The Cats' slow start can be directly attributed to the entire offense beginning on a slump, save 2B Lee Mayhew (.396/1/3). Atom is 14th in runs scored (47) and towards the bottom in every offensive category. Pitching has been OK, but the Cats are tied for 9th in runs allowed (76) thanks to poor defense and multiple unearned runs. SP Junkyard Gourd (0-1, 2.55) has been the most effective starter thus far.

Railroad League

While the T-51s sport the CBO's best record, the RL is still the CBO's tightest league with Oberland up by five on 7th place FHE. Oberland has the longest current winning streak at six games, while the Yao Guai are tied for the longest streak with Cambridge at four games. Glowing Sea is one back, and Diamond City and Egret round out teams over .500. Defending RL champions and my pick to win the title, Vault 81, is tied for 5th.

For Oberland, they have title hopes and have shown so far that they were unhappy getting upset by Quincy in the playoffs. Pitching has led to the T-51s biggest success, currently 2nd in runs allowed (46) and Starters ERA (2.98). They traded away Ahsoka Tano to Malden for another bat in CF Jurgen Windcaller. The top three starters--Tarzan Rogers (2-0, 1.93), Sarthis Idren (2-1, 2.84), and Emperry Alizm (3-0, 3.32)--are all handling business. 3B Kyle Powell (.444/5/13) may be the early Nuka-Hitter Award leader on offense. He is halfway to matching his career best in homers (10) in just 13 games.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

April 16 - Red Jay Jones has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 24-year-old catcher of the Sunshine Tidings Chemists had a hot bat in the North Charles Association over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Jones batted .636 with 14 hits in 22 at-bats, 4 home runs and 7 RBIs.

It was an extraordinary week for Kyle Powell of the Oberland T-51s. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .545, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the South Charles Association. Last week Powell went 12-for-22, racked up 4 home runs and 11 RBIs and scored 6 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Oberland third baseman.

April 23 - This week's top performer in the North Charles Association was shortstop Peter Pan Calvillo of the Sunshine Tidings Chemists.

He lashed out a .560 average and was voted the Player of the Week. Over the last week Calvillo tagged 14 hits in 25 at-bats and 1 home run, drove in 8 runs and scored 6 times.

23-year-old Brad Hop sent shock waves through Commonwealth Baseball Organization last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Hop made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .579 average, 11 hits in 19 at-bats, 4 home runs and 6 RBI.

Where the Quincy Granites right fielder goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Hop certainly made his mark last week.

CBO Noteworthy News

April 18 - Fort Hagen ace Nuke Laloosh solidified his place in league history with his 200th career victory today at Hubris Comics Park. Laloosh and the Silver Shroud bested Sunshine Tidings 8-3. He checked the Chemists on 8 hits in 7 innings and finished the day with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

"I've worked hard for this day," Laloosh said. "Sometimes I didn't think it would happen. Most of the time it seemed so far off. Now it's here. It's like a dream!"

Over the course of his career, Laloosh has a won-lost record of 200 wins and 129 losses with 2454 strikeouts in 3130 innings pitched with a lifetime 3.54 ERA.

April 20 - It came down to the last hour of a self-imposed trade deadline, but the Oberland T-51s and Malden Grognaks finally came to an agreement on a trade that had been rumored for weeks. The trade sends Oberland's 34-year old RHP Ahsoka Tano to Malden in a swap for 27-year old CF Jurgen Windcaller. Both GMs seemed relieved that the deal had been completed with one stating, "We had to set a deadline to get it done." The players are expected to report to their new teams by tomorrow.

In his career, Tano has fanned 862 batters and walked 513 in 1378.2 innings of work. His lifetime won-lost record is 74 victories and 69 defeats with a 4.22 ERA and opposing hitters have compiled a .267 batting average against him.

Currently Windcaller is batting .333 with 11 hits and no home runs. He has knocked in 1 runs and scored 7 times.

April 21 - Proving the old adage that one man's trash is another man's treasure, the Celtics announced today the acquisition of 25-year old RHP Gary Harvard and 21-year old minor league 2B Big Dipper Grzenkowicz from the Salem Witch Hats in exchange for 20-year old minor league SS No Neck Lok. "This isn't the deal of the century," acknowledged the Celtics, "but we think it will improve the direction of both teams."

During his career, Harvard has 23 victories and 41 defeats with a 5.23 ERA.

CYL All-Star Game

The North Region All-Stars have bragging rights for the year after beating the South Region All-Stars by a score of 3-1 at Coventry Grounds.

North Region star Early Duvet played a key role in the win, going 3 for 4 to lead his team.

In his 172-game career Duvet is hitting .384 with 247 hits, 42 doubles, 4 triples and 72 home runs. He has scored 174 runs and driven in 218.

Showcase for the Stars -- The Commonwealth Youth League All-Star Game. It's a great game for the fans. The All-Star Classic comes around each year at this time to the delight of every baseball fan. BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 May 2317

The May 1 Super Post, Part 1

CBO Top Performances

Hitters - There were decent hitting performances in April, but none topped the April 26 performance of Salem's Thatch Heard. In a thrilling 8-7 win at Cambridge, Heard's 9th-inning grand slam made the difference. Hear finished 4 for 5 with two home runs, three runs scored, and seven RBI for a 108 game score.

Pitchers - It was not even a complete game, but Glowing Sea's SP Hot Lips Houlihan threw the top game in April, earning an 89 game score. In 8.1 innings in an April 26 victory over Quincy, 1-0, Houlihan gave up one hit, a 1st-inning triple to Rookie of the Month, Brad Hop, walked one, and struck out nine.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 23 Halep Gutteridge has a lot of baseball ahead of him.

But for now the young Easy Town Assaultrons star can enjoy the numbers he put up in April, which have garnered him the nod as the North Charles Association Batter of the Month.

His breakout month featured a .474 average with 2 home runs, 18 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

SCA Hitter - When Honker Trinkl stepped up to the plate in April he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the South Charles Association Batter of the Month award.

The young Roxbury first baseman posted a .402 batting average with 5 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 19 runs. Trinkl also worked pitchers for 5 walks to post a .441 on-base percentage.

NCA Pitcher - In April Sunshine Tidings starter, Eugene Gym really put the strong arm on the other North Charles Association teams and hauled in the Pitcher of the Month trophy. He did it with an impressive 3 wins and no losses.

In 5 starts and 37.1 innings of work, Gym limited opposing batters to 32 base hits and a .232 batting average. He fanned 25, issued 9 walks and had a 2.17 ERA.

SCA Pitcher - In April, when the name of Ryan Goodpryce appeared on the Vault 81 lineup card it was a virtual lock on a victory. He started 5 times and chalked up 4 wins and 1 loss. With those stats it was also a virtual lock that he would be named the South Charles Association Pitcher of the Month.

Goodpryce shackled opposing batters on 21 base hits and a .204 batting average. He rang up 16 strikeouts in 30.1 innings of work, surrendered 17 walks and fashioned a sparkling 1.48 ERA.

NCA Rookie - Axe Dillworth was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 20-year-old shortstop definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's North Charles Association Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 20 games Dillworth batted .362 for Starlight, slapping 29 hits in 80 at-bats with 1 home run, drove in 6 runs and scored 11 times.

SCA Rookie - Brad Hop earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the South Charles Association for last month's performance. The boyish Quincy right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Hop hit .397 with 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and 19 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

NEBL Analysis

The NEBL functions as the place where veterans go to hang on to baseball, try to make it back to the CBO, and sometimes dominate the league. Fans of the NEBL have flocked to see some of their favorites from the CBO play into their 30s, so to speak. This season, several 30+ players are giving the fans' a lot of worth for their caps.

All divisions currently have a sole leader after the first month of the season:
Maine - Everett
Vershire - Abernathy
Mass - Warwick
Connri - Needham

NEBL Players of the Month

PL Hitter - Tobias Hoffman of the Medford Radguards stood out in April with a .368 batting average against Patriot League pitchers to land him the Batter of the Month award.

The 26-year-old right fielder totaled 11 home runs, 21 RBIs and 16 runs scored. He also chipped in 9 walks for a .442 on-base percentage.

YL Hitter - At only 21 years of age, Spud Sewell could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Providence Warlocks, as April was one to remember for the shortstop and he has captured the Yankee League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .370 with 5 home runs, 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

PL Pitcher - April's #1 hurler was Mirko Polanecky of Everett. He gunned down Patriot League hitters the whole month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award. The Mutant Hounds star piled up 3 wins and no losses to take the honor.

The 23-year-old Polanecky added 15 strikeouts in 24.2 innings and 8 walks to his season record and compiled a 0.73 ERA. Other clubs hit .175 against him.

YL Pitcher - April's elite pitcher was Quack Quack Ruggiero of Needham. He silenced Yankee League hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with 3 wins and no losses in 4 starts.

Ruggiero restricted opposing hitters to a .185 batting average. He rang up 15 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of work, surrendered 9 walks and crafted a 0.74 ERA.

MML Analysis

The MML has been the jumping spot for some of the younger talent once they "get it." While some still move into AAA territory in the NEBL, many of the top young guns will jump from here straight to the CBO ranks.

Two divisions are tied. Division leaders are:
Boggs - Marblehead and Nashua
Murtagh - Bedford
Williams - Hull
Yastrzemski - Dedham and Hartford

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - For a rookie just breaking in, Grumpy Jamarauli certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the LL Batter of the Month award for April.

The 21-year-old first baseman for the Watertown Armorers hit .392 with 10 home runs, 21 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

SL Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to Massachusetts Minor League, Aru Makalapua put up some good numbers in April and earned the SL Batter of the Month award.

He was one of Springfield's offensive leaders with a .360 average in 20 games. He also racked up 5 home runs, 15 RBIs, and 17 runs scored.

LL Pitcher - The premier pitcher this past month in the Legends League was Jakie Zhou of the Bedford Beaneaters. He was one mighty tough pitcher, finishing April with a sensational 4-0 record and a 1.49 ERA.

The Beaneaters star made 5 starts and surrendered 26 hits in 36.1 innings. He struck out 17 and walked 5.

SL Pitcher - Hull Lead Bellies hurler Gatatog Uvenk was rewarded today with the Stars League Pitcher of the Month honors. Uvenk, 26, realizes that pitching isn't all about how hard you can throw, it's about accuracy and about picking yourself up even when you've had a run of bad luck.

"I'd like to say I don't give them anything to hit," said the Hull starter, "but that's not true. Every pitcher gives up a long ball now and then. Usually there's at least one mistake in each at-bat, but you've got to battle through your mistakes and build some positive momentum. The rest will fall into place."

Things did fall into place for Uvenk. In April he took the ball for 38.1 innings while notching 26 strikeouts, a 0.47 ERA and a 3-0 record.

BMU Analysis

The BMU is built for the college selections who are not ready to compete for a CBO shot. While some 18 and 19 year olds play here, many are in the 20-25 range.

There are four solo division leaders:
Dark Hollow Pond - Parsons Asylum
Cambridge - Mystic Pines
Downtown Boston - DB Tech
Glowing Sea - Meriden

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - Dante Joyce made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the Commonwealth Association this past month.

The Parsons Asylum Greasers right fielder shined through the month of April and has won the Batter of the Month award.

The 19-year-old hit .357 with 7 home runs, 12 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

MA Hitter - Troll Pope has a lot going for him. The Westing Estate right fielder just broke into the majors this year and now the Massachusetts Association has just picked him as its top hitter for April.

In 12 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .421 with 5 home runs, 14 RBIs and 9 runs scored.

CA Pitcher - A 4-0 record with a 2.01 ERA is a good month for most any pitcher. The Commonwealth Association thought it was worthy of an award and named B.J. Westing, starter for the Bristol Blitz, April's Pitcher of the Month.

He also held the opposition to a .171 average while posting 12 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.

MA Starter - When Malik Watts takes the hill, there's a good chance for a Meriden victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and a 2.08 ERA in 4 starts, tossed 26 innings, fanned 22, and held enemy hitters to a .226 average.

That's why the Attack Dogs star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Massachusetts Association.

GBRL Analysis

Ah, the youngsters fresh out of the CYL, and a few college players 22 or under. The GBRL is for the "rookies," the players with talent but not yet showing those skills at a major league level. The GBRL is full of potential talent looking to show off what they have, probably for a jump to AA (MML) or A (BMU) later in the season or next.

Division leaders in the GBRL through 16 games are:
Northeast - Augusta
Northwest - Beantown
Southeast - Neponset Park
Southwest - Roadside Pines

GBRL Players of the Month

NL Hitter - Not known for his offensive prowess, Horan Freeman set the league afire in April and took home the North League Batter of the Month award.

The Augusta third baseman posted a steady .446 batting average, 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and 13 runs.

SL Hitter - Aurie Fubini, the Woonsocket third baseman, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .431 batting average with 28 hits, 7 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 19 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the South League Batter of the Month honors for April.

NL Pitcher - When Everton Lance takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Diamond Island Glowers. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 3-0 mark and 2.52 ERA in 4 starts. In 25 innings, he fanned 21 and walked 13.
That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the North League.

SL Pitcher - There's something about a young rookie winning the South League Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Hugh Ironhorse, a 22-year-old starter for the Pioneer Park Hackers.

In April, he topped off the month with a 3-1 mark and 2.57 ERA in 4 starts, tossed 21 innings, fanned 20 and held opposing teams to a .213 average.

CCBL Players of the Month

Hitter - Slow Motion Donovan may be much younger than other hitters in the Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in April to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 20-year-old New Hampshire left fielder hit .546 with 13 home runs, 32 RBIs and 35 runs scored.

This season, Donovan is batting .549 with 22 home runs.

Pitcher - In April Boston College starter Eta Candy confused hitters all month long. Last month's Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Month took home the trophy as he collected a 8-1 record in 10 starts.

The 20-year-old Candy added 91 strikeouts in 84.1 innings and 9 walks to his season record and compiled a 0.96 ERA. Other clubs hit .238 against him.

This season, Candy has compiled a 13-1 mark with a 1.36 ERA.

CYL Analysis

There are 13 games left in the regular season, and there are zero of the 32 playoffs spots filled. Regional leaders are currently the CIT Academy Yahoos of the NR and the CYL's best team in the Coventry Quads of the SR.

Division leaders are:
NR Franklin - Littleton
NR Emerson - Marblehead
NR Fuller - Covenant
NR Revere - CIT Academy
NR DuBois - Haverhill
NR Longfellow - Far Harbor
NR Allen - Nashua
SR Adams - Coventry
SR Alcott - Jamaica Plain
SR Morse - Brockton
SR Attucks - Harwich
SR Hancock - New Haven
SR Bradberton - Hadley Falls
SR Mayhew - New Bedford

CYL Players of the Month

NR Hitter - Marlborough Minigunners fans believe they've got a talented young star in Enjoyable Everett Dexter.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in April, as he hit .402 with 24 home runs, 50 RBIs and 36 runs scored.

The end result was the left fielder being named the North Region Batter of the Month.

Thus far this season in 36 games, Dexter is batting .400 with 33 home runs, 65 RBIs and 50 runs scored. He has 48 hits in 120 at-bats.

SR Hitter - Wareham Comets fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in April.

Joker Swan put up a remarkable month at the age of 17 and has been named the South Region Batter of the Month.

For the month, Swan hit .385 with 23 home runs, 47 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Swan is hitting .362 this season with 25 home runs, 54 RBIs and 37 runs scored. He has 42 hits in 116 at-bats.

NR Pitcher - The #1 pitcher this past month in the North Region was Eagle Eye Hayes of the Marblehead Mess. He worked the hitters over real good, finishing April with a superb 8-1 record and a 1.13 ERA.

The Mess star made 9 starts and surrendered 49 hits in 71.2 innings. He struck out 116 and walked 19.

So far this season, Hayes has a record of 11-1 with 153 strikeouts and 21 walks in 95.1 innings and a 1.23 ERA.

SR Pitcher - In April when the West Quincy manager wrote the name "Carr" on the lineup card, he knew he had a good shot at winning. Start after start in the month, Sheridon Carr took the hill, took charge and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 7-1 mark and 1.47 ERA in 8 starts. The gifted Atomatoys star pitched 67.1 innings, fanned 79 and held opposing teams to a .182 average.

For his outstanding mound performance Carr was named the SR Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

This year, Carr has recorded a 9-2 mark. In 12 starts he has fanned 111 batters in 98 innings with a 2.39 ERA.

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

7 May 2317

One Clear Top Team, But Who Else Is Good?

We have just completed the four-week mark of the 2317 CBO season, and there is a clear top team in Oberland at 19-7. Quincy and Glowing Sea are both two games back, with Nahant's 16-10 record the top one in the NCA. Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Oberland T-51s (134.6, o)
2) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (125.7, o)
3) Nahant Celtics (118.7, ++)
4) Quincy Granites (116.7, o)
5) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (106.9, +)
6) University Point Deathclaws (106.9, ++)
7) Spectacle Island Reapers (104.9, +)
8) Malden Grognaks (103.9, +)
9) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (99.9, --)
10) Concord Radstags (98.0, ++)
11) Roxbury Rad Sox (97.8, +)
12) The Slog Ghouls (96.0, ++)
13) Cambridge Coursers (91.0, ++)
14) Starlight Killers (91.0, ++)
15) Goodneighbor Hancocks (89.4, -)
16) Egret Ninjas (89.0, --)
17) Southie Brews (88.4, -)
18) Easy Town Assaultrons (87.8, --)
19) Vault 81 Dwellers (80.2, -)
20) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (79.2, --)
21) Diamond City Swatters (78.2, +)
22) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (77.2, --)
23) Lexington Synths (75.1, --)
24) FHE Yao Guai (72.1, --)
25) Salem Witch Hats (71.3, o)
26) Atom Cats (60.4, +)
27) Bunker Hill 75ers (48.4, -)
28) County Crossing Bloodbugs (33.6, -)

Brotherhood League

The BL has the NCA's best team by record (Nahant) and the CBO's worst (County Crossing). Malden and Easy Town are above .500, The Slog is at .500, and Nordhagen Beach and Salem are below .500. While there is plenty of season left, I am personally surprised by the Celtics' success. Everyone is hitting home runs for them! But the Celts are not this update's feature team. That goes to the Bloodbugs and one big announcement.

The Bugs are getting poor performances throughout the roster with just a couple saving graces, including leadoff 2B Yoink Yukon (.406/0/18). County Crossing is 13th in runs scored (116) and 14th in runs allowed (171). Ace Scooter Harcourt (0-4, 8.23) may need a short trip to the NEBL. We have the story in the Noteworthy News section, but icon 1B/OF Babs Rooth (.169/3/11) is calling it quits after this season.

Institute League

Five teams in the Institute League are in a tight battle with just a two-game difference. As opposed to being the IL leader at this point, Bunker Hill is in 7th this season. Lexington is up on the 75ers by three games for 6th place. Fort Hagen and Sunshine Tidings are tied for 1st, while Cambridge, Concord, and Starlight are knotted up at 13-13 and a three-way tie for 3rd.

Not only is Nahant a surprise 1st place team, but more so is Sunshine Tidings. The Chemists missed the playoffs the past five seasons after nine-straight trips from 2303-2311. The biggest success thus far is the starting pitching, currently 1st in ERA (3.66). Thirty-eight-year-old Ace Eugene Gym (4-0, 2.70) won the NCA's Pitcher of the Month in April. C Red Jay Jones (.429/6/14) appears to be on a Nuka-Hitter Award track.

Minutemen League

Quincy was on top of the league to finish 2316, and they are the league leaders in the ML a month in. The only two other teams above .500 are Spectacle Island and University Point, both at 15-11. Goodneighbor, Southie, and Jamaica Plain are all clustered in the next three, while the Atom Cats are anchored in 7th and the SCA's worst record.

The Deathclaws missed the playoffs last season and figured that they were rebuilding from veterans to youth. Well, maybe not all the veterans are done, including Mr. CBO, 1B Barker Cocoa (.345/3/21). LF Pop Dylan (.319/8/19) is a star. Pitching could be better, but ace SP Clubhouse Treelover (4-1, 2.93) is doing great.

Railroad League

Oberland has a two-game lead in the RL and for the CBO's best record. Glowing Sea is the team on their heels, while the rest of the RL--Roxbury, Egret, Diamond City, Vault 81, and FHE--are al hovering around .500.

The Dwellers expect to compete for the title, but a truly slow start has made them have to play catchup. A three-game winning streak ended yesterday, but that at least has pulled Vault 81 out of 7th place. The big problem has been hitting woes, currently 11th in runs scored (115). 2B King Hippo (.388/4/10) is doing his job, but others need to step up.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

April 30 - Thatch Heard has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 24-year-old right fielder of the Salem Witch Hats had a hot bat in the North Charles Association over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Heard batted .542 with 13 hits in 24 at-bats, 3 home runs and 13 RBIs.

This season, Heard is batting .375 with 4 home runs. His totals include 23 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

What's in a number? In baseball, just about everything.

The numbers that Roxbury's Brennan Colt-45 put up last week were the envy of the league, as Colt-45 came away with South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He belted out 13 hits in 23 at-bats, 1 home run and 3 RBIs last week as he posted his .565 batting average.

Colt-45 is hitting .414 for the season with 1 home run, 12 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He has 29 hits in 70 at-bats and played in 18 games.

May 7 - Cambridge fans have something to crow about today as Cambridge left fielder Bubbler Mayhem nabbed the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award for his performance over the last seven days.

"I know there are times when it's hard to lay off pitches. Everyone goes through stretches when he's too eager to put the ball in play. You know, though, I feel like this past week I was able to get in the right frame of mind and just let things come naturally," said Mayhem.

He posted a .500 average (13-for-26) this past week with 3 home runs, 11 RBIs, and 6 runs scored.

Mayhem's current batting average stands at .344 and he has chalked up 7 home runs and 27 RBIs.

It was an extraordinary week for Rodney Caribou of the Roxbury Rad Sox. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .600, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the South Charles Association. Last week Caribou went 12-for-20, racked up 5 home runs and 11 RBIs and scored 6 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Roxbury third baseman.

For the year, Caribou is batting .388 with 7 home runs.

CBO Noteworthy News

April 26 - Nahant second baseman Zara Zapper had a stellar day at Lucky Charms Bowl. His 4-hit day included a cycle and 2 RBI and was instrumental in the 7-2 Celtics victory over the Starlight Killers.

"I felt just about perfect up there," Zapper said.

Zara Zapper hit a solo-shot off Mercury Morris in the 2nd, doubled in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 5th and singled in the 7th.

Looking at his present stats, Zapper has compiled a .400 batting average in 16 games with a .469 on-base percentage, while hitting 2 home runs and driving in 12 runs.

May 1 - County Crossing Bloodbugs first baseman Babs Rooth will retire at the end of the season, according to reports out of team headquarters. Rooth, 38, has been considering retirement since last season sources say, though he has declined to speak publicly about retirement.

"Babs still likes baseball," one source said, "He wants to play, but he also knows he's getting up in age and the skills are not what he wants them to be. He says it's physically getting harder to go out there every day. That's why he's hanging up his spikes."

Rooth is hitting the ball at a .332 clip over his career. In 1967 games he has delivered 2426 hits, 538 home runs with 1573 RBIs and scored 1486 times.

He is 3rd all-time in WAR (92.67) and 2nd in home runs and RBI.

May 2 - Spectacle Island fans reacted with disappointment to the news that Reapers reliever Brent Hooker has decided to retire.

Hooker has a career record of 124-127 with a 4.30 ERA. In 500 games he has recorded 2 saves and the 38-year-old has 1480 strikeouts in 2230.2 innings of work.

May 5 - Gavin Deux-Gas of the The Slog Ghouls helped his club in a big way, hitting for the cycle in their 9-3 win against the Easy Town Assaultrons. The 4 hits, 2 runs batted in and 4 runs scored for Deux-Gas led the way for the Ghouls.

"It was just a perfect day at the ballpark," Deux-Gas said later.

Gavin Deux-Gas doubled in the 1st, tripled in the 3rd, walked in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Hollywood Joe Horn in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

So far this year, Deux-Gas has 5 home runs and a .316 batting average.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

7 May 2317

NWL Picks: Victory, Orange

The 2317 season is upon us! PAM has predicted that the Victory Cave Crickets and Orange Tourists will win their respective divisions and meet in the Nuka Series. That was the same prediction a year ago but not the correct result.

Last season, Quartz defeated Victory in seven games in the 18th Nuka Series and then went on to the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers of the Vim! League in seven games in the Season Pass Association Series.

PAM has Victory taking the North Bradberton Division by six games over Grape and finishing at 58-32. Also, Orange is expected to finish at 49-41, six games up on Orange and Quartz in the South Bradberton Division.

For top hitter picks, PAM again predicts that the Tourists' 1B Yorkie Tallsky will come out on top. Other contenders are Orange's 1B Doman Northsea, Victory's 2B Swayne Pringle, and Cherry's 1B Swamp Dantin. Dantin was the winner of then Nuka King Award two seasons ago. A-Train Gilmore, now of Egret in the CBO, was last season's winner.

Top pitcher pick for the 2317 Nuka Cannon Award starts with the Tourists' SP Allen Puckett. Other contenders include Grape's Orion Sapunxiu, the Cave Crickets' Lefty Alvarez, and Orange's Melvin Teacup. Lang Fittingroom of Quartz was the winner last season.

Vim! League Predicted to Have the Best Season Ever!

You know who is super duper extra wextra excited about the upcoming 2317 Vim! League season, the 17th season of the league? Me!!! Do you know why? Because this will be the best Vim! League season ever, far none! Seriously, it just gets better every year.

Last season was the best before and things were super competitive in the Vim! Series. In the end, the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers beat the Acadia Acadians, 4 games to 2. The Fog Crawlers the went on to win the Season Pass Association Series, 4 to 3, over Quartz of the Nuka World League.

This season, PAM picks the Crawlers to repeat, which would extend their championships to six. Dalton Farm is first for most Vim! Series appearances (8) and championships (5). Echo Lake is second with three titles.

In the race for the Vim! MVP, won last season by Dalton Farm's Toppie Gunn (5th), PAM picks the Crabs' 1B Bobba Fette to win it. Other top contenders are 1B Mader Sierra of Far Harbor, and Dalton Farm's Tick Garrett and Gus Hangman. Fette won the Vim! MVP in 2312.

The Vim! Top Arm also has Fick Aragvsky of the Fog Crawlers sitting at the top. Three other contenders are Eden Meadow's Alex Ruder, Fisher Trout of Grand Hotel, and Acadia's Wearya Going. The Crawlers' Steady Mike Holmes won the award last season, his second. Going won it in 2314.

CCBL Regular Season Ends, UMass #1 Overall Seed

Another regular season is in the books, and the playoffs will begin in a couple of days. It will be a battle of survival -- and the final survivor will be the Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League champions. The "haves" will be in their radiant glory, playing for the league title, while the "have-nots" will be at home, sitting by the hot stove until springtime.

UMass enters the playoffs as the #1 overall seed, shattering the CCBL's winning percentage (.867) record. Last season was the Minutemen's first college playoffs appearance. They were eliminated in the Sweet 16.

Some clubs have coasted to make the playoffs -- others have scrapped tooth and nail to get here. After a long, sometimes seemingly endless regular season, it gets down to who can win a short series -- by hook or crook, talent or luck. That's what it takes to capture the Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League championship. The top teams will vie in the College Series starting today:

#8 Northeastern Huskies (BYE)

#5 Sturbridge Mighty Men (BYE)

Nahant, Glowing Sea Claim Top Records

With just over 30% of the 2317 season now complete, the two teams on top may be surprising. Both Nahant of the NCA and Glowing Sea of the SCA are tied at 24-14 for the top record in the CBO. Oberland, one of the coldest teams in the CBO, is one game back. Bunker Hill sports the CBO's worst record, while Atom, four games below .500, is the ONLY SCA team below .500. Only four teams in the NCA are above .500. Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (117.8, ++)
2) Nahant Celtics (114.8, +)
3) Diamond City Swatters (112.2, ++)
4) Spectacle Island Reapers (107.2, ++)
5) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (106.5, ++)
6) Goodneighbor Hancocks (104.2, --)
7) Oberland T-51s (102.9, --)
8) Easy Town Assaultrons (102.5, +)
9) Cambridge Coursers (99.7, ++)
10) FHE Yao Guai (97.0, ++)
11) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (93.7, ++)
12) Southie Brews (93.5, -)
13) University Point Deathclaws (92.7, +)
14) Starlight Killers (91.0, +)
15) Vault 81 Dwellers (91.0, --)
16) Atom Cats (90.5, ++)
17) Quincy Granites (89.5, --)
18) Egret Ninjas (89.0, o)
19) Roxbury Rad Sox (88.0, --)
20) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (87.0, +)
21) The Slog Ghouls (86.0, --)
22) Malden Grognaks (83.0, --)
23) Lexington Synths (76.8, o)
24) Concord Radstags (75.5, --)
25) Salem Witch Hats (65.2, o)
26) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (59.2, +)
27) County Crossing Bloodbugs (57.9, +)
28) Bunker Hill 75ers (44.0, -)

Brotherhood League

The Celtics hold a three-game lead on Easy Town as the only two BL teams over .500. The Slog and Malden are right at .500, while all of Salem, Nordhagen Beach, and County Crossing had better start winning soon.

For Nahant, the time to win may be now, at least that what OSA scouts are saying. A few players have climbed the ranks thanks to productivity. The Celtics are 2nd in runs scored (221), thanks in part to being 2nd in home runs (48). Five players have five or more dingers, including SS Evan Keel (.240/8/25), the team leader.

Institute League

Cambridge and Sunshine Tidings are each two games above .500 and tied for 1st. Starlight and Fort Hagen are a game back in a tie for 3rd. Concord, Lexington, and Bunker Hill bring up the rear.

The Coursers are winning thanks to great starting pitching, helping the, to be 2nd in ERA (3.95) and runs allowed (175). Scooter Yaghmour (2-5, 4.12) has struggled, but Bullet Barnes (4-2, 2.82) has been productive.

Minutemen League

Spectacle Island has a 1/2-game lead over Goodneighbor, a one-game lead on Quincy and Jamaica Plain, a two-game lead on University Point, and a 2.5-game lead on Southie in a crazy, tight league. Atom is five games back in 7th.

The Reapers do not have the stats output that indicates winning baseball, but their 53 home runs is tied with the Chemists for the CBO's best mark. Both 3B Donovan Mackey (.359/9/26) and CF Gauntlet Kim (.217/9/21) have helped those numbers. Ace SP Aqua Purified (4-0, 3.15) has been highly successful thus far.

Railroad League

Thanks to the recent T-51s' struggles, the Radscorpions are now in 1st, one game up on Oberland. Diamond City is in 3rd, two games back, while all of Egret, FHE, Roxbury, and Vault 81 are tied for 4th at 19-19 each.

The Scorpions are using pitching to lift themselves to the top. Glowing Sea is 1st in runs allowed (130) and Bullpen ERA (2.64) and 3rd in Starters ERA (3.49). SPs Alex Language (5-4, 2.89) and Hot Lips Houlihan (4-1, 3.00) have been dominant, as well as CL Mar Gotfenning (10 SV, 1.84).

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

May 14 - It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Mike Fountaineau, the Concord Radstags 23-year-old third baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 7 hits in 19 at-bats, compiling a .368 average with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs.

Currently Fountaineau is batting .283 with 5 home runs and 14 RBIs.

The South Charles Association has selected Ziggy Stardust of the University Point Deathclaws as Player of the Week.

He hit .500 (14-for-28) this past week collecting 6 RBIs, scored 6 runs and hit 1 home run.

So far this season, Stardust is hitting .343 with 2 home runs, 18 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He has 48 hits in 140 at-bats and a .361 OBP.

May 21 - This past week the best batter in the North Charles Association was J.J. Gray, who banged his way to the Player of the Week Trophy.

During the week the Easy Town left fielder compiled a .458 batting average (11-for-24) with 5 home runs, 16 RBI and scored 7 runs.

In the current season, Gray has put up a .324 batting average with 45 hits, 10 home runs, 42 runs batted in and scored 29 runs.

The South Charles Association today announced McMack Bingham as its Player of the Week.

The Atom first baseman was truly in a zone as he hit .545 (12-for-22) with 2 home runs and 11 RBIs.

In his 2317 season totals, Bingham has 8 home runs, .318 BA, .380 OBP, 34 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

CBO Noteworthy News

May 13 - Former standout RP Doug Dee El (318 career saves from 2296-2309) is making splashes in the coaching ranks. Some insiders in the league office believe Dee El could one day manage in the CBO.

Dee El is manager of County Crossing's MML (AA) team, the Ipswich Hitters in his first season there. While the talent is not the best, Dee El has looked poised. leading the Hitters to a 19-19 record early in the season.

May 17 - Local papers are reporting that Hid Matsumoto of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud will retire at season's end.

Matsumoto has a .251 career batting average and has hit a total of 296 home runs.

CCBL Playoffs Update

The CCBL playoffs are down to the Final Four: #2 Winthrop College, #3 Yale, #13 Commonwealth University, and #16 Fairfield.

The Winthrop College Guardians are making their 6th playoff appearance and seeking their third title. The Guardians won back-to-back titles in 2311 and 2312. Last season, Winthrop College was the #7 team but lost in the Sweet 16 to Curry College.

The Bulldogs of Yale are making their fourth-straight playoff appearance in just their fifth season in the CCBL. They were also #3 last season, winning their first two series to reach the Final Four before falling to Commonwealth University.

Speaking of CWU, the Terriers are making their fifth-straight playoff appearance, including a title won in 2314. In 2313, the Terriers fell 3-2 to Northeastern before topping Boston College, 3-1, the following year. Last season was CWU's third finals appearance, a 3-1 loss to Greenfield College.

The Fairfield Stags are making their Final Four AND playoff debut. Like Yale, the Stags play in in the Southern Commonwealth Conference, finishing 3rd behind the Bulldogs and tied with Narragansett. The Tide were the 14th seed, falling to Yale in the Sweet 16.

CYL Playoffs Update

The CYL is now in the Youth Series with the NR's #18 seed, the Worcester Crows taking on the SR's #18 seed, the Pawtucket Paw Sox.

Worcester's sole CYL title came in 2305 under the outstanding season of current CBO star, Gavin Deux-Gas. Pawtucket has never won the CYL but was three-time champions of the Providence Junior Pro League (2301, 2303-2304).

In Game One of the three-game series, the Crows took it, 8-4. They need just one more win. Story:

Pedersen Helps Worcester Take Youth Series Game 1

The Worcester Crows got past the Pawtucket Paw Sox by the score of 8-4 in the crucial first game of the Youth Series at Worcester Amateur Field. Worcester catcher Melchior Pedersen was 2-3 with a home run and 3 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, to lead the charge. With a 1-0 lead, the Crows will have two chances to close out the Paw Sox.

Ash Riojas helped out the Worcester cause in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run-scoring walk. For the game, the first baseman was 1-2 with 3 walks and was hit by a pitch.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Riojas, "one at-bat at a time."

Very excited to see Glowing Sea off to a great start, but that looks to be a tough division. Might have to upgrade the lineup near the deadline but things are looking good

If their top four starters remain this good, the Radscorpions can remain good. On offense, they hit well (high average) but do not score runs because they do not hit a lot of dingers. I would guess they want a power hitter to add to the lineup, but I don't know which one may be on the market. Nordhagen Beach is tanking so Slammin' Sammy Holloway? Naga Arakaki is having a down year, so that could be a spot for a slugger if he cannot get it together.

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 June 2317

The June 1 Super Post

CBO Top Performances

Hitters - Atom's McMack Bingham had May's top performance and the top performance of the season so far with a 116 game score. On May 19 at Quincy, Bingham went 5 for 6 with two doubles, two home runs, three runs scored, and seven runs batted in.

Pitchers - Harley Buechel of Goodneighbor had the top pitching performance with a score of 87. Buechel pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the Hancocks' 7-0 victory at Lexington on May 1. Buechel walked one and struck out seven in the victory. It was Buechel's second complete game of the season. He had three CGs in nine previous seasons.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Gavin Deux-Gas, the The Slog shortstop, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .423 batting average with 44 hits, 7 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 33 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the North Charles Association Batter of the Month honors for May.

Currently Deux-Gas has 10 home runs and a .365 batting average.

SCA Hitter - Atom Cats fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in May.

Lee Mayhew put up a remarkable month at the age of 23 and has been named the South Charles Association Batter of the Month.

For the month, Mayhew hit .366 with 5 home runs, 28 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

In his season totals Mayhew has 6 home runs and a .369 batting average.

NCA Pitcher - The North Charles Association scribes have announced May's Pitcher of the Month and have given the award to Chad Nailgun of Cambridge. He was one tough cookie on the mound last month with a fine 6-1 mark to prove it.

The Cambridge star made 7 starts with a 3.02 ERA and surrendered 48 hits in 47.2 innings. He struck out 41 and walked 9.

Up to now Nailgun has compiled an ERA of 3.90 with a 7-2 mark over 12 starts. He has 66 strikeouts in 80.2 innings and has held opponents to a .265 batting average.

SCA Pitcher - Despite the number of years he's been in the league, K-9 Creep still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 30-year-old starter for Atom was named South Charles Association Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 43 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 3.35 ERA in 51 innings of work.

To date this year, Creep has compiled a 6-3 mark with a 3.23 ERA in 12 starts.

NCA Rookie - Ty Paterson entered the month a lamb, but finished it a full-fledged lion as he received word that he had been chosen the North Charles Association Rookie of the Month for May.

In 0 starts Paterson cruised to a 1-0 record for the month, hurling 13.2 innings, striking out 11 batters and holding them to a .231 batting average.

Sunshine Tidings fans have a lot to look forward to with this guy on the hill.

This season, Paterson has recorded a 3-2 won-lost mark, pitched in 17 relief appearances and rung up 8 saves. He has a 3.68 ERA and has allowed 22 hits over his 22 innings of work, struck out 16 batters and walked 10.

SCA Rookie - Few players his age have the consistency to put a solid month together, but Spectacle Island's Travis Prescott carved up the opposition all May long and hauled off the South Charles Association Rookie of the Month award today as a result.

He sizzled last month with a 2-1 mark, fanning 5 in 11.1 innings with an ERA of 0.79 in 0 starts.

For the year, Prescott has made 20 relief appearances and claimed 13 saves. His record is 2-4 with 15 strikeouts in 19.1 innings and a 3.26 ERA.

NEBL Analysis

There have been some outstanding performances throughout the NEBL season. Some players to shout out early for their skills in the first 48 games include Braintree's (NB) Bannon Harrison. The 22-year-old former 2nd-round pick has shown some sudden pop, leading the NEBL with 16 home runs.

All divisions currently have a sole leader after the first month of the season:
Maine - Everett
Vershire - Abernathy
Mass - Brookline, Fall River, and Sandwich
Connri - Waltham

NEBL Players of the Month

PL Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 25 Cy Sutcliff has a lot of baseball ahead of him.

But for now the young Burlington Ferals star can enjoy the numbers he put up in May, which have garnered him the nod as the Patriot League Batter of the Month.

His breakout month featured a .318 average with 9 home runs, 23 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

For the year, Sutcliff is hitting .293 with 9 home runs. His stats include 25 runs batted in and 14 runs scored.

YL Hitter - Bannon Harrison made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the Yankee League this past month.

The Braintree Robobrains shortstop shined through the month of May and has won the Batter of the Month award.

The 22-year-old hit .356 with 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Looking at his present stats, Harrison has compiled a .323 batting average in 44 games with a .370 on-base percentage, while hitting 16 home runs and driving in 40 runs.

PL Pitcher - Felix Robles of Abernathy had a tremendous May with a 5-0 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Patriot League.

Robles restricted opposing hitters to 26 base hits and a .203 batting average. He rang up 19 strikeouts in 34.2 innings of work, surrendered 6 walks, and crafted a 2.60 ERA.

For the year, Robles has compiled a 7-0 record with a 3.20 ERA.

YL Pitcher - It was a monstrous May for the Yankee League Pitcher of the Month award winner, Lucas Frost of the Sandwich Bay Snakes. He put up some mighty scary numbers.

Frost recorded 4 wins and 1 loss in 6 starts. Throwing a total of 39.2 innings, he yielded 26 hits, mowed down 36 on strikes, gave up 6 walks and put up a solid ERA of 2.27 in a stellar month on the mound.

For the year, Frost has a 6-3 record with a 2.83 ERA in 10 starts.

MML Analysis

If the MML is not the toughest of the minors to play in, we do not know what tough is. While Hull of the SL is slightly dominating, every other division is tight.

Division leaders are:
Boggs - Marblehead
Murtagh - Revere Beach
Williams - Hull
Yastrzemski - Hartford

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - Regan Prezzton has a lot going for him. The Sanctuary Hills first baseman just broke into the majors this year and now the Legends League has just picked him as its top hitter for May.

In 26 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .373 with 6 home runs, 16 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

This season, Prezzton is batting .333 with 7 home runs. His totals include 24 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

SL Hitter - At only 22 years of age, Speedy Conejo could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Newton Behemoths, as May was one to remember for the third baseman and he has captured the Stars League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .375 with 10 home runs, 22 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

This season in 29 games, Conejo is batting .345 with 12 home runs, 26 RBIs and has scored 18 times.

LL Pitcher - Kit Kauffman really put his best foot forward in May with 5 wins and 1 loss and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month honors in the Legends League. When he got the start for the Tenpines Bluff Manta Men, it was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 35.1 innings of work, Kauffman limited opposing batters to 26 base hits and a .197 batting average. He notched 27 strikeouts, issued 10 walks and had a 1.27 ERA.

This season, Kauffman has compiled a 5-1 mark, 1.27 ERA and made 6 starts.

SL Pitcher - There's something about a young rookie winning the Stars League Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Arnold Welsh, a 22-year-old starter for the Hull Lead Bellies.

In May, he topped off the month with a 5-0 mark and 0.50 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 35.2 innings, fanned 31 and held opposing teams to a .179 average.

This year, Welsh has worked 42.2 innings with 39 strikeouts en route to a 5-0 record and a 0.84 ERA.

BMU Analysis

The BMU is pitching centric, including only two players hitting above .300 in the Commonwealth Association. In the other association, Abington's Rapp Unzelle (.381/2.1 WAR) has been a pitcher's nightmare.

There are four division leaders:
Dark Hollow Pond - Parsons Asylum
Cambridge - Stratford
Downtown Boston - DB Tech
Glowing Sea - Meriden

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - Oz Rodriguez may be much younger than other hitters in the Commonwealth Association, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in May to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 20-year-old Melrose first baseman hit .433 with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

This year, Rodriguez has collected a .433 batting average to date with 26 hits in 60 at-bats, 19 RBIs, 4 home runs and scored 10 times. He has played in 21 games.

MA Hitter - Rapp Unzelle put together a good May to earn the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month prize. A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to Abington officials that he belongs on the big league roster.

The Patriots left fielder posted a .380 batting average with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Unzelle is hitting .381 for the season with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He has 37 hits in 97 at-bats and played in 30 games.

CA Pitcher - Most of the time the starting pitchers get the glory, but not this month. A reliever, Florent Poda, has been named the Pitcher of the Month in the Commonwealth Association.

In May, the Greentop Nursery bullpen ace starred with 1 save in 11 relief appearances, logging 24.1 innings, 11 strikeouts, 14 walks and a 2.59 ERA. Poda finished the month with 5 wins and no losses -- and captured the trophy as the league's number one pitcher.

This season, Poda has made 11 relief appearances and has 1 save. His record is 5-0 with 17 strikeouts in 34.1 innings with a 2.62 ERA.

MA Starter - May was a very good month for Garth Fitzgerald V of the Eastlake Aquaboys. He held opposing hitters for a .221 average and took home the Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Month award.

In 5 starts he claimed a 5-0 record as he put up a 1.35 ERA and struck out 35 in 33.1 innings.

This year, Fitzgerald V has made 8 starts, thrown 54.2 innings, fanned 57 batters and walked 6. His won-lost record is 6-1 with a 1.15 ERA.

GBRL Analysis

The Augusta Harpooners (NB) is the top team in the GBRL through 46 games. Augusta lost the 2317 Rookie Series in their only previous playoff appearance.

Division leaders in the GBRL through 16 games are:
Northeast - Augusta
Northwest - Beantown
Southeast - Duxbury
Southwest - Waterbury

GBRL Players of the Month

NL Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to Greater Boston Rookie League, Downey Moore put up some good numbers in May and earned the NL Batter of the Month award.

He was one of Diamond Island's offensive leaders with a .402 average in 26 games. He also racked up 12 home runs, 31 RBIs, and 25 runs scored.

So far this season, Moore has put up a .364 batting average with 56 hits, 13 home runs and 38 RBIs.

SL Hitter - Woonsocket Butchers fans believe they've got a talented young star in Aurie Fubini.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in May, as he hit .378 with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

The end result was the third baseman being named the South League Batter of the Month.

Thus far this year, Fubini has hit .399 with 19 home runs and 52 RBIs.

NL Pitcher - The North League announced the winner of the Pitcher of the Month Award. It went to bullpen ace Peet Rodney of Switchboard for his outstanding work on the mound.

During the month, the Gun Fu star stood out with 1 save in 1 save opportunity, a 0.00 ERA and 3 wins and no losses. In 16.2 innings he struck out 18 and gave up 11 hits and 8 walks.

This season, Rodney has been credited with 1 save. In 19 relief appearances and 23.1 innings he has a 3-1 won-lost mark, a 7.71 ERA and 27 strikeouts.

SL Pitcher - When Copay Roach takes the mound, a Danbury victory is usually the result. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 5-1 mark and a 2.13 ERA in 7 starts, tossed 38 innings, fanned 46 and held opposing batters to a .191 average.

That's why the Gazelles starter was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the South League.

This season, Roach has fanned 65 in 59 innings and collected a 5-1 record with a 3.20 ERA.

CYL Playoffs Update

This is the time of the baseball season when grown men are reduced to tears. This year, the Worcester Crows were shedding tears of joy and the Pawtucket Paw Sox those of sorrow.

The Crows topped the Paw Sox today 10-5 at Paw Sox Field and locked up their 2nd Commonwealth Youth League Youth Series championship, winning the series 2-0.

"To come this far and leave empty-handed is not easy," said Pawtucket manager Marcus Pizza.

Series MVP, Early Duvet of Worcester, was 2 of 4 with a home run, a walk, two runs, and two RBI. He finished 5 of 8 (.625) in the series, including scoring two runs in Game 1 on 3 of 4 hitting.

The Crows finished the regular season in the North Region Benjamin Franklin Division with a 30-19 record, ending up in third place in the division standings.

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

4 June 2317

Glowing Sea Leaps Ahead, NCA Jumbled Up Top

We are more than 50 games into the season, All-Star voting has begun, and June will start to determine if teams are buyers or sellers heading into July. Glowing Sea, 9-1 in their last 10, now holds a three-game advantage on the CBO's second-best record. That happens to be Railroad League rival, Oberland. Diamond City, also of the RL, is tied with three other teams for the 3rd-best record in the CBO. Two of those teams are tied for the NCA's top record, Easy Town and Nahant. Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (127.1, o)
2) Lexington Synths (113.8, ++)
3) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (109.4, +)
4) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (107.8, ++)
5) Oberland T-51s (107.4, --)
6) Easy Town Assaultrons (105.4, +)
7) Diamond City Swatters (103.4, -)
8) Nahant Celtics (102.4, ++)
9) Atom Cats (102.2, -)
10) The Slog Ghouls (97.8, --)
11) Starlight Killers (94.8, ++)
12) Southie Brews (94.6, --)
13) Egret Ninjas (92.2, ++)
14) FHE Yao Guai (91.8, -)
15) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (89.8, --)
16) Quincy Granites (89.2, -)
17) Vault 81 Dwellers (89.2, ++)
18) Malden Grognaks (85.2, --)
19) Roxbury Rad Sox (83.8, ++)
20) Goodneighbor Hancocks (81.4, --)
21) Concord Radstags (80.2, --)
22) Spectacle Island Reapers (77.2, --)
23) Cambridge Coursers (72.2, --)
24) University Point Deathclaws (72.2, --)
25) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (71.6, o)
26) Bunker Hill 75ers (64.5, +)
27) County Crossing Bloodbugs (60.5, -)
28) Salem Witch Hats (54.9, -)

Brotherhood League

As mentioned in the intro, the Assaultrons and Celtics are tied for 1st, with The Slog just a game back in the race to the #1 seed. Just a game under .500, Malden is also in the playoff race. Nordhagen Beach, County Crossing, and Salem are clumped at the bottom and all in contention to hold the #1 draft pick. The Witch Hats currently hold that position.

The Party Boys are far from their days of glory, though they are a talented young team that may need to be patient instead of selling off assets. With the bottom ranking in runs scored (206) among other offensive categories, it is apparent that the Boys need bats. Oi! RF Slammin' Sammy Holloway (.284/7/30) is the star, but Nordhagen Beach could use even more long balls from him. Pitching has struggled, uincluding ranking 11th in runs allowed (277), thanks in part to the worst Bullpen ERA (6.01). Starters Ugio Church (4-4, 3.87) and Mister Burns (4-3, 3.42) have pitched decently.

Institute League

Like the tie in the BL, the IL is also tied and jumbled up top. Fort Hagen and Lexington are both in the lead, one game back of the NCA's top record. Two games back, tied for 3rd, are Starlight and Sunshine Tidings at a game above .500. Cambridge and Concord are tied for 5th, while Bunker Hill is five back of those two teams.

The Synths are on a seven-game winning streak and tied with the Radscorpions for the best 10-game record of 9-1. Lexington is getting it done by being up top in runs allowed (214), along with the 2nd-best Starters ERA (3.83). SP/RP Lyle Pine (3-0, 1.13) has stepped up recently with Kennett Kentucky (2-4, 5.30) moving into the bullpen. SP Deedee Martinson (4-6, 3.34) needs more run support.

Minutemen League

Jamaica Plain is in 1st and tied for the CBO's 3rd-best record at 29-22. Atom, which had a miserable start to the season, is now two games back and tied with Quincy for 2nd place. Southie is a half-game back of those two teams for 4th. Spectacle Island, Goodneighbor, and University Point bring up the rear.

At 8-2 in their last 10, the Red Rockets are now looking to be a team that has figured things out. They have done it by scoring runs in bunches, currently 1st in runs scored (286). The only other offensive category they are #1 in is home runs (62). Three players have contributed to those runs and homers: 3B Tre' Morgueman (.324/12/35), 2B Brandon Larsonist (.296/11/30), and LF Ken Debate (.272/10/32). Tristan Martell (7-2, 3.93) has benn the best pitcher.

Railroad League

As mentioned, the Scorpions, T-51s, and Swatters hold the top three spots. From 4th-7th, there is a two-game difference with FHE in 4th, Egret and Vault 81 tied for 5th, and Roxbury in 7th.

The Yao Guai are an anomaly at a game above .500. FHE is 12th in runs scored (229) and 11th in runs allowed (260), seeming to indicate they should be much worse record-wise. In association play, the Yao Guai are 17-15, even better than their 9-10 mark against the NCA. Anomaly. 2B Blue Dahlia (.272/8/30) has been the offense's top player, while RP Ryan Roberson (5-0, 2.25) is contributing to close wins.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

May 28 - One of the league's most exciting young players, Bill Barnes of the Easy Town Assaultrons earned himself North Charles Association Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 24-year-old catcher had a lofty .533 average (8-for-15), collecting 4 home runs, 5 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

So far this season, Barnes has gotten 42 hits in 123 at-bats for a .341 batting average with 8 home runs. His stats include 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He has played in 35 games.

It was an extraordinary week for Will Hell of the Quincy Granites. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .480, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the South Charles Association. Last week Hell went 12-for-25, racked up 2 home runs and 4 RBIs and scored 5 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Quincy second baseman.

To date, Hell has collected 54 hits for a .321 average. He has posted 11 home runs, scored 29 runs and driven in 29 runs.

June 4 - It was an extraordinary week for Kasumi Goto of the Bunker Hill 75ers. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .684, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the North Charles Association. Last week Goto went 13-for-19, racked up 3 home runs and 9 RBIs and scored 4 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Bunker Hill right fielder.

Currently Goto is hitting .317 and has collected 8 home runs, 32 RBIs and scored 18 times, while playing in 47 games.

Lee Mayhew has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 23-year-old second baseman of the Atom Cats had a hot bat in the South Charles Association over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Mayhew batted .440 with 11 hits in 25 at-bats, 4 home runs and 12 RBIs.

For the year, Mayhew has hit at a .373 clip with 34 RBIs, 8 home runs and 48 runs scored.

CBO Noteworthy News

May 25 - Diamond City and Starlight have made a swap. Players involved in the transaction are the Swatters 21-year old minor league CF DJ Shark and the Killers 24-year old 3B Hey Dentra Venski, 20-year old minor league LF Iron Elf Crist, 23-year old minor league LHP Tats McCoy, and 22-year old minor league RHP Berserker Haynes.

In 28 games this year, Venski has posted a .260 average and put up these numbers: 5 home runs, 11 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

May 31 - "I've made up my mind to leave baseball," Earthbound Bussey said. "It's time to move into the second phase of my life."
The Oberland right fielder announced his retirement today at a press conference, saying it would be his last season.

Looking at his all-time stats, Bussey has a career .281 average with 2318 hits, 388 doubles, 67 triples, 189 home runs and 818 RBIs to date. He has scored 1409 runs, walked 1094 times and stolen 562 bases.

May 31 - The Salem Witch Hats and David Daly have parted ways. It was announced today by club officials that David Daly had been dismissed as the team's manager.

Witch Hats GM Arias told reporters that "certain goals were mutually agreed upon this season and, in our estimation, they have not been reached. Our team has not made the progress we were promised."

Daly told BNN that he is "proud of what has been accomplished in my tenure as the Witch Hats manager. We have a better club now than when I first got here. I'm just sorry it ended this way."

June 1 - In a move that surprised few, the Salem Witch Hats have dismissed general manager Kelly Arias.

Arias's job security has been in doubt for some time, as the Witch Hats have lost games, whiffed on key draft picks and not been able to engineer a turnaround through free agency.

Arias seemed ready to move on, and even before today's announcement few observers expected him to stick around into next season.

"I will cherish my time in Salem," Arias said. "I'm sorry it had to end this way but it is clear the relationship was not working."

June 4 - "Vote Early and Vote Often!"

While that may not be true for elections, that's the message coming out of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization offices for the upcoming All-Star game, scheduled for Tuesday, July 31st , 2317. The ballots have been released, and everyone can cast your ballot up until a few days before the game, when the final rosters will be released.

Six-Run Comeback Marks Yale's First CCBL Championship

Entering the bottom of the 8th inning of Game 5 of the 2317 College Series, the Yale Bulldogs appeared to have come close but just short. Yale trailed 8-2 entering their last two at bats. But they were not finished.

First came the 8th inning and chipping away. Yale scored two runs thanks to star 2B Warring Morris' two-run homer. That cut the Commonwealth University lead to 8-4.

In the bottom of the 9th, with the Terriers' Nemesis Oakley on the mound to start the inning, the Bulldogs were ready to become champions. Oakley faced two batters, a triple by Kerwin Cox and then an RBI single by Helter Skelter to make it 8-5 CWU.

Schooner Newton then came in for the Terriers. Ryder Francis answered that change with a single, followed by an RBI double by Jiminy Christmas to cut the lead to 8-6 with no outs and the tying run on second.

After Morris was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Terror Kavanagh singled to cut the lead to 8-7. Wawa Medlock then singled to tie the game with the championship-winning run on third and no outs. Ralph Batten swung at the first pitch he saw from Newton and drove it between the SS and 3B. Morris skipped into home plate. clinching the title for Yale.

"We've got grit," said Bulldogs right fielder Jiminy Christmas, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to." Christmas was 9 for 22 in the series, won three games to two by the Bulldogs. he hit two homers and drove in six.

"I didn't have a great series," Morris said, "but that was from games 1 through 4. In Game 5, I was ready to win a championship in my last college game." Morris hit .188 for the series, but went 2 for 4 with a home run, a HBP, two runs, and two RBI. "It felt amazing to be the one to cross the plate for the winning run."

In just its fifth season as part of the CCBL, Yale is now champions for the first time. Commonwealth University won the championship in 2314.

Glowing Sea CBO's Best, Lexington and Easy Town Rule NCA

We have hit the season's halfway point (63 of 130 games), and we are starting to get a picture of what's happening. We will get our first preview of association seedings. For now, Easy Town and Lexington are tied atop the NCA and for the CBO's 2nd-best record. Glowing Sea, with 41 victories, holds the top record. Current NCA Standings
1T. Easy Town
1T. Lexington
3. Nahant
4. Starlight
5. The Slog
6. Fort Hagen (leads Malden 2-0)

Current SCA Standings
1. Glowing Sea
2. Atom (leads Quincy 3-0, leads Jamaica Plain 3-2)
3. Diamond City
4. Quincy (leads Jamaica Plain 3-2)
5. Jamaica Plain
6. Oberland

Brotherhood League

The Assaultrons have the top record in the BL but lead Nahant by only one game. The Slog and Malden are both above .500, thus in the playoff race. All of Nordhagen Beach. County Crossing, and Salem will be sellers and preparing for the draft in November.

The Ghouls were champions in 2314, missed the playoffs in 2315, and returned but quickly exited in 2316. This season, The Slog appears to be in the middle of another playoff run with a good chance to be the best from the NCA. The Ghouls are 3rd in runs scored (336) and 4th in runs allowed (292), showing balance throughout the team. The starting rotation leads the NCA in ERA (3.71), led by ace Flirt Perez (8-4, 2.93). Two hitters drive the team: SS Gavin Deux-Gas (.377/15/36) who leads the NCA in batting average and WAR (4.4) and RF Hammer Longball (.342/12/37).

Institute League

With the Synths in first, the only other contenders are Starlight and Fort Hagen. Concord is the best of teams with losing records at five games below .500. Cambridge, Sunshine Tidings, and Bunker Hill can start making trade lists.

The Killers last made the playoffs in 2311 but hold on to 2nd place in the IL through 63 games. Pitching has been the key, including leading in runs allowed (253) and Bullpen ERA (3.20). Three starters have a sub-4.00 ERA: Mercury Morris (6-6, 3.97), Jacques Of'Ten (11-4, 3.43), and Phil Pearlman (2-9, 3.93). CL Wizard Albutt (13 SV, 2.16) has been effective. Hitting needs to be much better to be a contender, with the Killers at 13th in runs scored (262). No qualifying player is batting above .300.

Minutemen League

Atom, Quincy, and Jamaica Plain are knotted atop the ML in what is the tightest league from top to bottom. Southie is 1.5 games back as the only other team above .500. Spectacle Island and University Point are close, while Goodneighbor, 1-9 in their last 10, is fading away.

The defending champions, now known as the Granites, are hitting well, leading to a tie in the ML for the league lead. Quincy is 2nd in runs scored (352), led by the outstanding young duo of RF Brad Hop (.345/16/50) and 2B Will Hell (.324/16/49). Ace Make Money (5-5, 3.84) is the only effective starter, with Quincy 14th in Starters ERA (5.49), something that could mean missing the playoffs if it does not improve.

Railroad League

The Radscorpions are five up on the Swatters for the largest league lead. Oberland, FHE and Vault 81 are all above .500. Egret and Roxbury are not out of it but need to win at a much higher clip in the second half of the season.

Diamond City, as expected, is all arms and few bats. The Swatters are 2nd in runs allowed (264) and Starters ERA (3.50) but 11th in runs scored (282). Ace Macho Lopez (6-5, 2.54) has pitched well, with all four starters below 4.00. RF Nicholas Stapleton (.310/9/39) has been the best hitter.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

June 11 - His face might be sunbaked after all the years he's invested in this game, but 38-year-old Babs Rooth of the County Crossing Bloodbugs is still playing a kid's game -- and getting paid for it. The veteran first baseman had a tremendous week and was named the North Charles Association Player of the Week.

Rooth drilled 8 hits in 18 at-bats and 4 home runs on his way to posting a .444 average. He also knocked in 11 runs and scored 6 times.

So far this season, Rooth has put up a .249 batting average with 43 hits, 10 home runs and 36 RBIs.

It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Will Hell, the Quincy Granites 24-year-old second baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 13 hits in 24 at-bats, compiling a .542 average with 4 home runs and 14 RBIs.

June 18 - All week long Jannar Arbor was the toughest out in the North Charles Association and that is the prime reason he was voted the Player of the Week.

This season, Johnston has posted a batting average of .272 with 52 hits in 191 at-bats, 8 home runs and 39 RBIs. He has also scored 27 runs, walked 21 times and compiled a .344 OBP.

CBO Noteworthy News

June 9 - The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys have made a deal sending 22-year old minor league CF Jemm Saturn to the Sunshine Tidings Chemists for 24-year old minor league 3B Ruben Hawkins, 21-year old minor league LF Lightning Jeffries, and a 6th round draft pick. Both sides are said to be pleased with the way the trade worked out.

Saturn was considered "next in line" for the Boys but became impatient not getting a chance to show his skills at the next level. Nordhagen Beach sent him to the Chemists with the hope Jeffries can take on that role. Party Boys scouting director, Steve Strubberg, has indicated, though, that Jeffries may also be converted to a middle infielder.

June 11 - Jamaica Plain's Derek Green took the hill at Hallucigen Stadium at UP today in search of his 250th career win. The 38-year-old ace found it against the University Point Deathclaws.

After the historic victory, his manager told reporters, "I saw a tremendous sigh of relief when this thing was over. He was just looking to hug everyone in sight."

He worked 5.2 innings with 3 strikeouts and no walks in the 6-5 victory, checking University Point on 13 hits.

"It a big milestone in my career," admitted Green. "When you get close to it, you worry about it a lot. It's done now... and I can relax and enjoy it."

A check of his career stats reveals Green has chalked up 250 wins and 164 losses with 3531 strikeouts and a 3.77 ERA. Opposing teams have put up a .246 batting average against him.

June 17 - Sean Samuels said he's looking forward to getting home to Boston, Massachusetts to relax and unwind.

At age 39, the Easy Town Assaultrons player has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

"I'm thankful for my time in Commonwealth Baseball Organization, but all good things must come to an end," he said.

Samuels's all-time stats include: 2337 hits, 414 doubles, 71 triples, 258 home runs and 982 RBIs in 2021 games. He is batting .299 with 300 stolen bases and has scored 1388 runs.

June 18 - Sources in University Point close to Donn Mattingley report that the third baseman will retire once the season is over.

During his career, Mattingley has played in 1672 games, batted .303 with 288 home runs and 1828 base hits.

Radscorpions are legit! With a nice lead they may be conservative at the deadline but I'm sure their staff would love a big bat

They are looking good. I am starting to see the CPU make some quality trades, so it is possible. I used to force a lot of trades in past years, but I am going to believe the OOTP developers. If I don't see enough moving of pieces, there will be trades. Glowing Sea has several overachievers so far. We'll see if they ride with it, but they could use more power in their lineup (tied for 9th in HRs in the coming July 2 update).
