The July 2 Super Post, Part 1

Easy Town, Glowing Sea on Championship Path

The top teams in each of the North Charles and South Charles associations seem to be on a championship path. Glowing Sea continues to possess the CBO's top record as we enter July. Easy Town is now a game up on Lexington for the NCA's top record and the CBO's second-best record. Things are aligning for each team. Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (114.1, o)
2) The Slog Ghouls (112.9, ++)

26) County Crossing Bloodbugs (63.2, o)
27) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (55.8, --)
28) Bunker Hill 75ers (46.2, o)

Current NCA Playoff Standings
1. Easy Town
2. Lexington
3. The Slog
4. Nahant
5. Starlight (5-3 vs Fort Hagen and 1-1 vs Malden)
6. Fort Hagen (leads Malden 2-0)

Current SCA Playoff Standings
1. Glowing Sea
2. Jamaica Plain
3. Diamond City
4. Quincy (leads FHE 2-0)
5. FHE
6. Vault 81 (4-1 vs Oberland, 1-1 vs Atom)

Brotherhood League

Give the Assaultrons credit for their current success, but this league is far from over. The Slog trails by two games thanks to a seven-game winning streak. Nahant has gone 4-6 in their last 10 to drop to 3rd, three games back, and Malden is four games back. On the bottom side of the BL, Nordhagen Beach, County Crossing, and Salem all have no realistic path to the playoffs.

For the Grognaks, a bid for a third-straight playoff appearance will mean winning at a higher clip. At 41-35, they are in the race but would be out of the playoffs if they started today. The Grognaks are in good shape as a well-rounded team, currently 5th in runs scored (391) and 2nd in runs allowed (328). There are lots of contributors on offense, but the big two have been 3B Jacob Tarberry (.353/17/59) and CF Floren Habern (.336/16/43). Ace SP Hrye Caje (10-5, 2.76) has been great.

Institute League

Lexington continues to lead, but Fort Hagen has suddenly made a move, going a CBO-best 8-2 in their last 10. The Silver Shroud are now tied with Starlight for 2nd place. Those three teams are the only IL teams over .500. Concord and Sunshine Tidings are still alive but need to win at a high clip the rest of the way. Cambridge and Bunker Hill can start selling. The 75ers at 25-51 possess the CBO's worst record.

The Shroud are no strangers to success but they have not found that success recently with no playoff appearances in 2315 and 2316. This season, the Shroud are looking as though they are improving and will probably be in the playoffs, assuming they stay healthy enough. Fort Hagen is 7th in runs scored (382) and 10th in runs allowed (402), so they will need to be better overall. Still, with those stats, the close games are mostly going their way (13-6 in one-run games, the best winning percentage in the CBO in one-run games). 1B Huck McFarland (.345/7/38) has been a decent all-around hitter. LF Riot Darton leads the team with 17 home runs. Wily veteran Nuke Laloosh (8-6, 3.34) is the top pitcher.

Minutemen League

With 8.5 games separating 1st from 7th, the ML is by far the CBO's most interesting league. The Rockets have the lead by a game over the defending champs, Quincy. Atom is three back, Southie is 4.5 behind, and Spectacle Island is at .500, five back. Both University Point and Goodneighbor are below .500 but still very much in the playoff race.

Southie is seeking its first playoff appearance in its eighth season. The Brews may have their best team, but they also may be overachieving. Still, the Brews are contenders, including a balance of 5th in runs scored (380) and 6th in runs allowed (361). On offense, few have stood out, but 3B Mikita Sato (.323/10/38) may be the best. Ace SP Buzzcut McDonald (11-3, 3.27) is the best pitcher, and CL Twinkle Toes Bremner (22 SV, 2.48) has been effective from the bullpen.

Railroad League

Glowing Sea has the largest league lead, six games up on 2nd place Diamond City. A stack of teams are all above .500 and in the thick of the wildcard race: FHE, Vault 81, and Oberland. The Dwellers and T-51s are tied with the Cats for the 6th seed in the SCA. Vault 81 holds the tiebreaker advantage. Egret is just under .500, while Roxbury may be out of the race, nine back of the last seed.

The Rad Sox are talented, especially on offense with stars 1B Honker Trinkl (.315/17/61) and 2B Odd Todd Walker (.330/9/35/20 SB). But the pitching is bad. Really bad. The Sox are 14th in runs allowed (437). Saint O'Fender (5-5, 4.64) is the "ace" but is rated 24th among aces in the league. There is hope that Crawdad McCarthy, the 2316 5th-overall pick out of Vim! College, is ready sooner than later. McCarthy has pitched in the BMU (A), MML (AA), and NEBL (AAA) so far this season. Currently with the Sandwich Bay Snakes of the NEBL, McCarthy is 0-2 with a 3.74 ERA in four starts. Roxbury will probably need to take another top pitcher in this season's draft.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

June 25 - A battle-tested Babs Rooth declared war on opposing pitchers last week, attacking the ball like the well-schooled veteran he is. Today the 38-year-old County Crossing first baseman collected the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

He wrapped up the week with a .500 average, 11 hits in 22 at-bats, 3 home runs, 12 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

Rooth is currently batting .278 with 13 home runs and 51 RBIs.

When it came to hitting the baseball, Honker Trinkl was in a class by himself in the South Charles Association this past week. Nobody did it better.

The outstanding first baseman for Roxbury tagged opposing pitchers for a .500 average and was voted the Player of the Week Award. Included in his stats were 13 hits in 26 at-bats, 5 homers, 8 runs scored and 12 RBIs.

In 67 games this season, Trinkl has batted at a .320 pace with 83 hits and 16 home runs.

July 2 - This week's best performer in the North Charles Association was shortstop Gavin Deux-Gas of the The Slog Ghouls.

He slashed out a .417 average and was voted the Player of the Week. Over the last week Deux-Gas stroked 10 hits in 24 at-bats and 2 home runs, drove in 7 runs and scored 6 times.

So far this season, Deux-Gas has gotten 110 hits in 289 at-bats for a .381 batting average with 20 home runs. His stats include 46 RBIs and 72 runs scored. He has played in 70 games.

There was no one hotter in the South Charles Association last week as Brandon Larsonist attacked enemy pitching with a vengeance to collect the Player of the Week Award.

The 23-year-old Jamaica Plain second baseman batted .471 with 8 hits in 17 at-bats, 3 home runs and 9 RBIs.

Larsonist is currently batting .310 with 16 home runs, 48 RBIs and 63 runs scored. He has 84 hits in 271 at-bats.

CBO Noteworthy News

June 21 - It's all done except the paperwork. The Oberland T-51s and the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys have agreed to a trade that will send 21-year old minor league 3B Peter LaCock to Nordhagen Beach, while 32-year old LHP Yank Daley will be shipped to Oberland. A top front office executive with the T-51s described the trade talks as "quick and easy." "We're glad to get this deal done. We think it's something that helps our ball club and it didn't take too long at all to sort this one out," he said.

This year, Daley has earned no saves, worked 32.2 innings, fanned 25 hitters and recorded a 5.23 ERA. He has also put up a 2-2 won-lost mark.

June 21 - With the mid-season mark upon us, now is a great time to update the pre-season BNN Top 100 Prospect list with what we have learned to this point. This year, 20 year-old LHP Paul Bird of the Spectacle Island Reapers is the #1 prospect overall.

Here is the top 10:
1) LHP Paul Bird, 20, Spectacle Island Reapers
2) RHP Lane Phrasemaker, 21, FHE Yao Guai
3) CF Ditcher Doyle Cobbler, 20, Southie Brews
4) 3B Dodge Squallbender, 20, Quincy Granites
5) RF Wind Dale Davis, 20, Goodneighbor Hancocks
6) C Austin Sapia, 18, Sunshine Tidings Chemists
7) LHP Crawdad McCarthy, 20, Roxbury Rad Sox
8) 2B Chad Kahan, 20, FHE Yao Guai
9) 3B Malik Goodneighbor, 18, Spectacle Island Reapers
10) RF Dante Joyce, 19, Goodneighbor Hancocks

June 22 - Reports have surfaced that Cambridge has agreed to send 26-year old 2B Togie Pitt to the Diamond City Swatters in exchange for 21-year old minor league RHP Bunter Mayberry and 21-year old minor league RHP B.J. Westing. "It's a done deal," said one executive speaking on the condition of anonymity. "I'm surprised word got around so quickly. We just signed off on this an hour ago." The deal apparently is awaiting physicals before an official announcement is made by either team.

During the current season Pitt is batting at a .278 clip with 3 home runs and 14 RBIs. He has played in 59 games and scored 28 times.

June 24 - It likely won't turn either team into an instant contender or provide a huge franchise shakeup, but the Goodneighbor Hancocks and County Crossing Bloodbugs finalized a trade today. Goodneighbor will send 24-year old minor league SS Seaside Jones to the Bloodbugs, while the Hancocks will receive 26-year old CF Thrifty Iraheta.

"We think this is a deal that will help out both teams and we're glad to get it done," Hancocks general manager Rick Herbst said.

The trade is expected to be officially completed later today with the players joining their new ballclubs by the end of the day.

This season, Iraheta has hit at a .297 clip with 16 RBIs, 1 home runs and 40 runs scored. He has played in 49 games.

June 25 - Proving the old adage that one man's trash is another man's treasure, the Killers announced today the acquisition of 23-year old 1B Jimmy-James Sessoms from the Cambridge Coursers in exchange for 24-year old 1B Frigate Magdaleno. "This isn't the deal of the century," acknowledged the Killers, "but we think it will improve the direction of both teams."

For the season, Magdaleno has hit .190 with no home runs and 2 RBIs. He has played in 36 games and scored 3 times.

In 58 games this season, Sessoms has compiled a .255 batting average with 48 hits and 5 home runs. He has also scored 23 times and knocked in 25 runs.

June 26 - In a hastily called press conference, Bunker Hill announced today a trade with Southie that will send 30-year old SS Aaron Squire to the Brews in exchange for 24-year old RHP Junior Griff, 23-year old minor league RHP Seymour Kimahri, and 21-year old minor league 1B Mystic Moore. All players are expected to be in their respective new cities in time for today's games.

Currently Squire has 2 home runs and a .272 batting average.

July 2 - The Silver Shroud and Chemists announced a deal that was completed today. Fort Hagen sent 18-year old minor league C Tipper Lesueur and 22-year old minor league LF Lyky Poniros to Sunshine Tidings for 25-year old RF Blaine Stabb. Both teams appear happy with the outcome of the trade. The general managers told the Baseball News Network they felt the swap was beneficial for all parties involved.

So far this year, Stabb has hit .205 with 1 home run, 5 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

CBO Top Performances in June

Hitters - It was early in June, but Malden's Jacob Tarberry took Jamaica Plain for a ride on June 2. Tarberry went 4 for 4 with two doubles, two home runs, a walk, four runs, and five RBI in a 14-5 blowout of the Red Rockets. Tarberry's 110 game score ranks as the second-highest of the season.

Pitchers - We have a tie for the best pitching performance in June, with Lexington's Aaron Noluh and Spectacle Island's Aqua Purified each earning an 88 game score, one point behind season leader, Hot Lips Houlihan.

On June 23, Noluh threw a complete-game three-hitter in the Synths' 9-0 win over Cambridge. Noluh walked one batter abd struck out eight Coursers for the victory, pushing his record to 7-4 on the season.

Four days later, Purified also had a dominating performance in the Reapers' 5-0 triumph over University Point. Purified allowed just two hits in his complete game victory, walking two and striking out seven in the process.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Babs Rooth may be getting older, but he's evidently not slowing down. He may also want to change his mind about retiring.

The County Crossing Bloodbugs first baseman is the North Charles Association Batter of the Month for June after posting a stellar campaign.

Rooth batted .382, hit 11 home runs, drove in 35 runs, scored 19 times and compiled a .510 on-base percentage.

Thus far this year, Rooth has hit .281 with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs.

SCA Hitter - Tre' Morgueman battered South Charles Association pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Commonwealth Baseball Organization long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Morgueman told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 26 games, Morgueman hit .392 with 8 home runs, 27 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

Morgueman is hitting at a .346 mark this season. His stats show 19 home runs, 61 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He has played 72 games for the Red Rockets.

NCA Pitcher - Deedee Martinson was on top of the world in June, capping it off with the North Charles Association Pitcher of the Month honors.

The Lexington starter was superb in 6 starts with 5 wins and no losses, 44.2 innings pitched, 38 strikeouts and a fine 1.81 ERA.

This year, Martinson has compiled a 9-6 record with a 2.82 ERA in 19 starts.

SCA Pitcher - Cutter Redman is the latest South Charles Association Pitcher of the Month award winner. The Glowing Sea starter shone on the hill repeatedly last month and finished June with a sparkling 5-1 record.

In 7 starts he tossed 44.1 innings, posted 35 strikeouts, and put up a 1.62 ERA.

This year, Redman has compiled a 10-5 record with a 3.04 ERA.

NCA Rookie - County Crossing's Puny Muljana collected 33 hits to snare the North Charles Association Rookie of the Month for June.

He batted .359 with 3 home runs, 17 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

The 21-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace.

At the moment, Muljana is hitting .325 with 4 home runs and 29 RBIs. He has played in 42 games and scored 33 times.

SCA Rookie - Mike Searocker was in a zone all last month and zeroed in on the South Charles Association Rookie of the Month crown.

In June the Egret pitcher had a 4-1 record and breezed through opposing lineups, holding them to a .270 batting average. He started 6 games, threw 39 innings with 29 strikeouts and 10 walks. He also fashioned a fine 2.08 ERA.

In 19 starts this season, Searocker has gathered 8 wins while suffering 5 losses. He has pitched 117.1 innings, allowed 129 hits, struck out 82 and has a 3.68 ERA.

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

2 July 2317

The July 2 Super Post, Part 2

NEBL Analysis

Entering July, there has only been one team, Abernathy, that has been a head above the others. While there are division leaders throughout, the Adamantium have the NEBL's largest lead, an eight-game advantage over both Burlington and Marlborough.

All division leaders:
Maine - Everett
Vershire - Abernathy
Mass - Sandwich
Connri - Waltham

NEBL Players of the Month

PL Hitter - Danvers Sonics fans believe they've got a talented young star in Cesar Larsen.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in June, as he hit .390 with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

The end result was the shortstop being named the Patriot League Batter of the Month.

Hitting .295 to date, Larsen has 4 home runs and 28 RBIs. He has played in 67 games.

YL Hitter - Magic Johnson made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the Yankee League this past month.

The Worcester Cannons second baseman shined through the month of June and has won the Batter of the Month award.

The 24-year-old hit .341 with 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Currently Johnson is batting .292 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs.

PL Pitcher - A relief ace was chosen the best pitcher in the Patriot League in the month of June.

The top vote-getter was Quick Toes Wilmsmeyer of the Arlington Caps, who finished the month with 7 saves in 9 save opportunities.

He had 3 wins and no losses with a 1.20 ERA. Wilmsmeyer hurled 15 innings and totaled 10 strikeouts.

To date this season, Wilmsmeyer has 9 saves with a 3-1 mark and 3.15 ERA.

YL Pitcher - The #1 pitcher this past month in the Yankee League was Mack Gunn of the Foxborough Minutemen. He worked the hitters over real good, finishing June with a superb 4-1 record and a 3.24 ERA.

The Minutemen star made 6 starts and surrendered 27 hits in 33.1 innings. He struck out 20 and walked 5.

Over the season Gunn has thrown 90 innings and dished out 64 strikeouts with a 6-8 mark and a 4.10 ERA.

MML Analysis

Every division is now within four games with some definitive leaders in three of the four divisions. The SL's Ted Williams Division was the one with the largest gap a month ago. Now it is the tightest, with Pawtucket leading Hull by a game.

Division leaders are:
Boggs - Tenpines Bluff
Murtagh - Revere Beach
Williams - Pawtucket
Yastrzemski - Hartford

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - Covenant left fielder Kettle Deitrich took home the Legends League Batter of the Month Trophy for June.

He put up some solid numbers, including a .375 batting average and .396 on-base percentage with 33 hits, 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Looking at his stats this year, Deitrich has compiled a .301 batting average, while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 43 runs. He has played in 64 games and scored 33 runs.

SL Hitter - Marshfield center fielder Murr Rohgoo was certainly bad news for pitchers in the month of June. He wore them out, going 26 for 88, and was rewarded with the Stars League Batter of the Month award.

He hit .295 with 6 home runs, 14 RBIs and scored 22 runs.

This season, Rohgoo has hit at a .257 clip with 37 RBIs, 16 home runs and 51 runs scored.

LL Pitcher - June's top hurler was Bubs Tentsleep of Tenpines Bluff. He shackled Legends League hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with a sparkling 6-0 mark.

The 20-year-old Tentsleep added 24 strikeouts in 35.2 innings and 14 walks to his season record and compiled a 0.76 ERA. Other clubs hit .195 against him.

This season, Tentsleep has crafted a 11-2 mark with a 2.61 ERA in 86.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .242 against him and he has 50 strikeouts.

SL Pitcher - It was a sensational June for Tullio Canarica as he mystified, mesmerized and terrorized opposing batters to capture the Stars League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Canarica locked down a 5-0 mark in 5 starts last month, striking out 18 while walking 8 in 39 innings and posting a 1.62 ERA.

This season, Canarica has a 6-2 mark in 9 starts with a 2.53 ERA. He has given up 64 hits in 67.2 innings, struck out 33 and issued 20 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .257 batting average against him.

BMU Analysis

The Commonwealth Association is the more contested of the two associations. Each of the divisions, the Dark Hollow Pond and Cambridge, have ties atop. The 7th-place team in the Cambridge, Outpost Zimonja, is just eight back of the leaders, Bristol and Mystic Pines.

Division leaders:
Dark Hollow Pond - Melrose and Parsons Asylum
Cambridge - Bristol and Mystic Pines
Downtown Boston - DB Tech
Glowing Sea - Meriden

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to Boston Minor Union, Zacky O'Dowd put up some good numbers in June and earned the CA Batter of the Month award.

He was one of Sandy Coves's offensive leaders with a .333 average in 21 games. He also racked up 8 home runs, 24 RBIs, and 15 runs scored.

Currently O'Dowd is batting .275 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs.

MA Hitter - When Jazz Sinclair stepped up to the plate in June he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month award.

The young Somerville Place first baseman posted a .455 batting average with 6 home runs, 19 RBIs and scored 14 runs. Sinclair also worked pitchers for 5 walks to post a .492 on-base percentage.

Currently Sinclair is batting .365 with 38 hits and 9 home runs. He has knocked in 25 runs and scored 19 times.

CA Pitcher - The Melrose Eyebots owe Luv Unleashed a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in June, Unleashed tore up the opposition with a fine 4-0 mark on his way to the Commonwealth Association Pitcher of the Month award.

"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Unleashed, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."

It was Unleashed who did the banging in June as he tossed up 35 strikeouts in 41 innings, holding opponents to a .173 average and posting a 1.10 ERA.

This year, Unleashed has compiled a 5-0 mark with a 1.29 ERA.

MA Starter - Wacky Dowling Robertson is the latest Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Month trophy winner. The Hingham starter sparkled on the diamond time and again last month and finished June with an outstanding 4-1 record.

In 6 starts he tossed 40.1 innings, posted 42 strikeouts, and sported a 1.34 ERA.

This year, Robertson has fashioned a 4-1 mark, 1.34 ERA and pitched 40.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .189 against him and he has logged 42 strikeouts.

GBRL Analysis

The young'uns continue to battle, with a few standout players looking to make their move closer to the CBO in 2318. Except for one division, the SL's Southeast Division, every other division includes a one or two-game lead.

Division leaders in the GBRL through 72 games are:
Northeast - Augusta
Northwest - Fiddler's Green
Southeast - Woonsocket
Southwest - Greenwich

GBRL Players of the Month

NL Hitter - At only 20 years of age, Paydirt Wynter could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Augusta Harpooners, as June was one to remember for the center fielder and he has captured the North League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .417 with 15 home runs, 33 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

So far on the season, Wynter is hitting .359 with 26 home runs, 66 RBIs and 70 runs scored. He has 92 hits and played in 60 games.

SL Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 19 Aurie Fubini has a lot of baseball ahead of him.

But for now the young Woonsocket Butchers star can enjoy the numbers he put up in June, which have garnered him the nod as the South League Batter of the Month.

His breakout month featured a .374 average with 9 home runs, 33 RBIs and 34 runs scored.

Thus far this season, Fubini is hitting .389 with 28 home runs, 85 RBIs and 80 runs scored. He has 105 hits in 270 at-bats and has played in 66 games.

NL Pitcher - The Coastal Cottage Buds felt very secure when they sent Alastair Strefford out to the hill last month. The 21-year-old starter went after North League hitters with a vengeance and earned June's Pitcher of the Month award.

He went 4-0 with a 2.50 ERA as he struck out 42 in 36 innings over 6 starts.

Strefford has fashioned a 6-4 mark for the season, 3.84 ERA and thrown 84.1 innings in 15 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .220 against him.

SL Pitcher - The Pitcher of the Month has been chosen and the South League trophy went to Norwalk hurler, Uck Domagala.

During the month, Domagala was impressive with a 3.41 ERA and 4 wins and no losses. In 29 innings he struck out 24 and gave up 27 hits and 9 walks.

So far this year, Domagala has made 13 starts, tossed 75.1 innings, struck out 68 batters and walked 23. His record is 6-3 with a 4.54 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .279 batting average.

CCBL Awards

Hitter - The future looks extremely bright for Biddy Juhan. At the age of 20, many players are still trying to find their way in Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League.

Juhan has not only found his way, he's already established himself as one of the game's brightest stars, today being named the winner of the Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League Top Collegiate Hitter Award.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

4 July 2317

All-Star Break: Victory, Dark on Top

The Victory Cave Crickets hold a four-game lead in the North Bradberton Division, while Dark has the same lead in the South Bradberton Division. A year ago, the Bloodworms had the NWL's worst record at this point.

The Cave Crickets are 3rd in runs scored (269) and 5th in runs allowed (264), showing that the team is not as strong as its 30-18 record indicates. Victory's top player has been LF Lip Durocher (.391/12/43).

Dark is 5th in runs scored (255) and 1st in runs allowed (215), meaning pitching is the dominant force. SP Terry Sherri (6-0, 2.56) has been the mot successful pitcher in the NWL thus far.

Lip Durocher has a lot going for him. The Victory left fielder just broke into the majors this year and now the Nuka World League has just picked him as its top hitter for June.

In 26 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .396 with 7 home runs, 22 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

For the year, Durocher is hitting .398 with 12 home runs. His stats include 43 RBI and 35 runs scored.

Lino Campione was on cloud nine the entire month of June, capping it off with the Nuka World League Pitcher of the Month honors.

The Grape starter was spectacular in 6 starting assignments with 5 wins and no losses, 39 innings pitched, 23 strikeouts and a fine 3.00 ERA.

Campione has posted a 7-0 record for the year with a 3.18 ERA. Teams are hitting .289 against him and he has rung up 44 strikeouts in 65 innings.

NWL All-Star Game and Rosters

Nuka World League put its best players on the field today, and the game certainly showed that.

In the annual Midseason Classic, the South Bradberton Division came out over the North Bradberton Division by a final score of 5-2. Leading the way for the South Bradberton Division All-Stars was catcher
Tractor Traylor.

"I go out there and do my best every game, All-Star game or not," the star said after his great show, going 2-for-2 in the contest.

A check of his lifetime stats shows Traylor has a career .331 average with 355 hits, 56 doubles, 3 triples, 28 home runs and 178 RBIs. To date he has scored 143 runs, walked 71 times and stolen 0 bases.

It's time once again for the Nuka World League All-Star game!
The game features the top players from the North Bradberton Division and the South Bradberton Division slugging it out in a baseball extravaganza.

Amusement Park League

In the Amusement Park League, both the Nuka Bottling Plant Pack (18-12) lead the North Division. The Dunmore Ferris Wheels (20-10) have a three-game lead in the South Division and hold the top record.

For a rookie just breaking in, Auto Focus certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the APL Batter of the Month award for June.

The 21-year-old right fielder for the Galactic Zone G-Force hit .382 with 2 home runs, 11 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

In June Junkyard starter, Too Much Ayo really put the strong arm on the other Amusement Park League teams and hauled in the Pitcher of the Month trophy. He did it with an impressive 3 wins and 1 loss.

In 4 starts and 26.2 innings of work, Ayo limited opposing batters to 20 base hits and a .206 batting average. He fanned 15, issued 8 walks and had a 2.36 ERA.

APL All-Star Game and Rosters

Although his team came out on the losing end, nobody could deny Arimon Snoreman's performance in this year's all-star game.

The APL North Division All-Stars fell to the APL South Division All-Stars by a score of 6-4, but Snoreman was still named the game's MVP.

"You would have liked to have won the game of course, but being named the MVP is a great honor," he said from his team's dressing room at Star Core Stadium at the Galactic Zone.

In the contest, Snoreman went 1 for 1.

The votes are tallied and the players have been chosen -- all that's left is to "Play Ball"! It's time once again for the midyear classic, where the league's premier performers come together to show their skill and talent. The All-Stars from the APL North Division and the APL South Division are set to tangle to determine which league is the best.

Dalton Farm Vim! League's Best

The Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers have been the most successful team in the Vim! League's 16-year history. The defending champions, who have also won a Vim! league best five championships, hold the best record at 33-15, two games up on the tied teams atop the Harbor Division. The Crawlers have a six-game lead on National Park.

Far Harbor and Grand Hotel are both 30-18 atop the Harbor Division. Last season's division champion, Acadia, is in 4th place. The Ghoul Whales won the Vim! Series just two years ago, defeating Dalton Farm in seven games. It was Far Harbor's second title, tying them for 3rd with the Atoms and National Park. Echo Lake is 2nd all-time with three titles.

Galdrus Hlervu, the Far Harbor center fielder, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .406 batting average with 43 hits, 5 home runs, 31 RBIs and scored 19 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the Vim! League Batter of the Month honors for June.

To date, Hlervu has collected 67 hits for a .351 average. He has posted 7 home runs, scored 24 runs and driven in 54 runs.

June was a very good month for Fick Aragvsky of the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers. He held opposing hitters for a .238 average and took home the Vim! League Pitcher of the Month award.

In 6 starts he claimed a 5-0 record as he put up a 2.14 ERA and struck out 37 in 46.1 innings.

For the year, Aragvsky has a 8-0 record with a 2.98 ERA in 11 starts.

Vim! League All-Star Week

The Fog Division All-Stars have bragging rights for the year after beating the Harbor Division All-Stars by a score of 9-8 at Harbor Grand Hotel Grounds.

Fog Division star Fox McCloud played a key role in the win, going 1 for 2 to lead his team.

McCloud has a career .306 batting average and .357 on-base percentage. He has recorded 189 hits with 22 doubles, 2 triples, 24 homers, 107 RBIs and scored 93 runs since coming into the league.

How would you like to manage a team with more star players than you can play? It wouldn't be an easy chore. That's the dilemma facing the two managers at the annual Vim! League All-Star classic -- how to get all the talented All-Stars in the game. But it's a joy for the fans -- to see all their favorite stars on one field at the same time.

Here are the official All-Star rosters:

Mount Desert Island League

Division leaders are the Nucleus Radchickens (Small Bertha) and MS Azalea Shipwrecks (Old Longfellow). The Radchickens lead Cliff's Edge by a game and have just a three-game lead over last place Brooke's Head, meaning this division is wide open. The Shipwrecks have a three-game lead over 2nd place Rayburn Point.

Brooke's Head Lights fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in June.

Andolin Campos put up a remarkable month at the age of 20 and has been named the Mount Desert Island League Batter of the Month.

For the month, Campos hit .317 with 8 home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

There's something about a young rookie winning the Mount Desert Island League Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Jazzy Josh Bowdry, a 22-year-old starter for the Nucleus Radchickens.

In June, he topped off the month with a 4-0 mark and 1.91 ERA in 4 starts, tossed 28.1 innings, fanned 24 and held opposing teams to a .172 average.

MDIL All-Star Week

All-Star Brooke's Head Lights' right fielder Bee Ngo had a night to remember.

Not only did he take the field with the game's best players, he was also a huge factor in the 5-4 Small Bertha Division victory over the Old Longfellow Division All-Stars.

"We had a meeting before the game, and I was struck by the talent in the room. Old stars, young stars, it's a game I'll never forget," Ngo said. "I talked to a few of my friends from back home, and they told me to go out and win the game for them. I'm sure they'll be thrilled."

Showcase for the Stars -- The Mount Desert Island League All-Star Game. It's a great game for the fans. The All-Star Classic comes around each year at this time to the delight of every baseball fan. Talented players from the Small Bertha Division and Old Longfellow Division come together and show their wares on the baseball diamond. The top players go toe-to-toe with one another to get the bragging rights for their league.

The Slog Begging Teams to Beat Easy Town

What makes a 10-game winning streak "bad"? Well, for the red-hot The Slog Ghouls, winners of 10-straight, having your league rival keep winning can do that.

While the Ghouls have gone 10-0 in their last 10, raising their record tto 46-33, the Easy Town Assaultrons are on an eight-game winning streak, helping them to maintain a 2.5-game lead on The Slog.

"We really need somebody to beat those dudes [Easy Town]," Ghouls 3B Zap Mast said. "That would be great."

It may be a ways off, but the two teams meet at Easy Town Field in 11 days. Winning streaks may not remain, but the chance that both teams are still atop the standings is likely. Only Malden and Nahant are above .500, and the Celtics are currently moving in the opposite direction, losing their last six.

"I don't know what it is about [the Assaultrons," The Slog SP Flirt Perez said, "but I hate them. Can they just lose the rest of their games, please?"

Perez faced off with the Trons on May 4, an 8-2 Ghouls win.

It appears a rivalry has brewed in the Brotherhood League! Historically, the Assaultrons have not been successful. Their sole BL title came in 2307. The Trons appeared in the Sole Survivor Series twice (2298, 2316), both times as runners-up in the BL. The Slog has also only won one BL title since the full CBO began, 2314; they won the BL and the Sole Survivor Series in 2297 when the leagues worked as separate entities. The 2314 league title led to the Ghouls' sole official Sole Survivor Series championship, a 4-1 win over current defending champions, Quincy.

Brotherhood League

We featured the race to 1st place earlier in the month, but the Trons have regained control over an also-hot The Slog squad. The Ghouls trail by three games in what is left of the BL title race. Malden and Nahant could get back into the race, but they are both probably looking at a wildcard bid instead. Nordhagen Beach, County Crossing, and Salem are all done and likely to pick in the Top 5 in the 2317 Draft.

The Witch Hats did not expect to be good, but they also did not expect to hold the CBO's worst record. As of now, that is where they are. The Hats are 12th in both runs scored (370) and allowed (483). Looking at their roster, some sellable assets may be ace SP Paul Stains (9-9, 3.40), who is having one of his worst seasons of his career for winning percentage. 2B Seemly Sam Tucker (.295/2/12).

Institute League

The Synths have begun to take a solid lead as the IL appears to be the weakest league overall in the CBO. Lexington leads Starlight by six games, with the Killers the only other team above .500. At .500, Fort Hagen is in the playoff race, along with Concord. All of Cambridge, the Chemists, and Bunker Hill appear to be out of the playoff race, meaning the SCA has eight contenders with 42 games to go.

The 75ers are one of the teams out of contention. Despite their 8-2 mark in their last 10, the 75ers have not been productive in 2317. The productivity has been surprising since Bunker Hill is considered a talented team, having made the playoffs the past three seasons, including winning the IL just one season ago. The biggest problem has been pitching, with the 75ers currently 13th in runs allowed (511) and Starters ERA (4.94) and 14th in Bullpen ERA (5.91). Only Jalep Temper (9-8, 3.36) has been a saving grace, but the return of Pokey Chatman (4-3, 3.69) has helped. This may sound surprising, but we would suggest that Bunker Hill mostly holds ranks rather than making panic trades. Maybe LF Kasumi Goto (.303/9/43) could be a veteran trade possibility to bring in a little more talent.

Minutemen League

The ML is the fun league, with the Red Rockets and Cats tied for 1st, and the Quincy Granites just one game back. Southie is on a four-game losing streak, hurting their playoff hopes, but the Brews are still in it. Spectacle Island, University Point, and Goodneighbor are beginning to fall too far behind.

Goodneighbor is currently battling Roxbury for the SCA's worst record. The Hancocks are also in sell mode, sending SS Gav Gidree to Oberland for prospects. A team struggling on offense--12th in runs scored (386)--got rid of a young offensive star. Make it make sense. Veterans that could go include 1B Brian DeLong (.313/9/40) and SP Dave Cregger (4-8, 5.19).

Railroad League

The Radscorpions have the largest lead of seven games over FHE. There is a jumble starting with the Yao Guai with places 2nd through 6th separated by only five total games. Diamond City is in 3rd, Oberland in 4th, Egret in 5th, and Vault 81 in 6th. The Sox are six back of the Dwellers, meaning they have no realistic hopes to make the playoffs.

The Ninjas brought in some talent and hoped to make their first playoff bid since 2311, but that window may be closing. Egret is struggling on offense, but have overachieved for their current 45-43 record. Pitching is not the best, but good enough to give up the 4th lowest runs allowed (404). Since they are in it, the Ninjas should be buyers, looking to improve the 11th-best scoring offense (396) with the 13th batting average (.258). While CF A-Train Gilmore is great at stealing bases (26), he has not adjusted well moving from NWL pitching to CBO pitching with just a .235 average. C Knicker Trout (.212/3/24) could also move to the bench for a better hitting catcher.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

July 9 - One of the league's most exciting young players, Zap Mast of the The Slog Ghouls earned himself North Charles Association Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 25-year-old third baseman had a lofty .542 average (13-for-24), collecting 2 home runs, 4 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

For the season, Mast is hitting .339, batted in 61 runs with 13 home runs and 54 runs scored.

It was an extraordinary week for Huge Hugh Testerman of the Southie Brews. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .412, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the South Charles Association. Last week Testerman went 7-for-17, racked up 4 home runs and 11 RBIs and scored 6 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Southie right fielder.

Testerman is hitting .273 for the season with 16 home runs, 52 RBIs and 48 runs scored. He has 74 hits in 271 at-bats and played in 78 games.

July 16 - It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Jannar Arbor, the Concord Radstags 25-year-old right fielder, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 12 hits in 23 at-bats, compiling a .522 average with 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Currently Arbor has 18 home runs and a .256 batting average.

26-year-old Turbo Blackwood sent shock waves through Commonwealth Baseball Organization last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Blackwood made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .480 average, 12 hits in 25 at-bats, 4 home runs and 8 runs batted in.

Where the Roxbury Rad Sox left fielder goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Blackwood certainly made his mark last week.

This season, Blackwood is batting .322 with 8 home runs. He has scored 20 runs and driven in 29.

CBO Noteworthy News

July 2 - No one has ever achieved seven hits in a game. Until now.

Cambridge defeated Bunker Hill at Cambridge Polymer Field. The star of the game for the Coursers was left fielder Bubbler Mayhem. His hitting heroics included a 7-for-8 day, paving the way for Cambridge's 11-9 triumph over the 75ers. Bubbler Mayhem singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Cleveland Heep in the 7th, hit an RBI single in the 9th, doubled in the 11th, hit an RBI double in the 13th and hit a two-run home run off Corey Ware in the 14th.

In this current campaign Mayhem is hitting at a .342 clip with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs.

July 9 - There were plenty of hugs and handshakes all around as 24-year old SS Gav Gidree left the Goodneighbor Hancocks today en route to joining the Oberland T-51s organization. 24-year old minor league RHP Phantom Brear, 21-year old minor league RHP Alberto O'Keeffe, and 23-year old minor league RHP Meiji Nakagawa will be traveling to Goodneighbor Hancocks to complete the swap.

For the season, Gidree is batting .278 with 45 hits and 6 home runs. He has scored 20 times and batted in 21.

July 9 - A trade was announced today at a press conference in Roxbury. Not satisfied with their current roster, the Roxbury Rad Sox general manager shook things up by acquiring 24-year old minor league RHP Patrick Hamilton, 23-year old minor league RHP Killer Kim, and a 5th round draft pick from the FHE Yao Guai for 24-year old minor league RF Javen the Raven Coleman and a 10th round draft pick.

"We're a better team now," Rad Sox general manager Hubert Cole said. "We've added several pieces to the puzzle."

July 10 - It likely won't turn either team into an instant contender or provide a huge franchise shakeup, but the Glowing Sea Radscorpions and Concord Radstags finalized a trade today. Glowing Sea will send 21-year old minor league 1B Deacon Phillip to the Radstags, while the Radscorpions will receive 34-year old RHP Jason Tonelli.

"We think this is a deal that will help out both teams and we're glad to get it done," Radscorpions general manager Lank Chembaker said.

The trade is expected to be officially completed later today with the players joining their new ballclubs by the end of the day.

This season, Tonelli has accumulated no saves, registered a 7.11 ERA and struck out 31 in 38 innings. He also has a 3-1 record in 22 relief appearances.

July 13 - Vault 81 lost two players, Aaron Wright and Dynamite Delaney, due to a misunderstanding with scavengers in their commute to Nordhagen Beach.

Wright and Delaney each received several serious but non-life-threatening bullet wounds after scavengers mistook the players for rivals. Wright and Delaney were sent to the Boston Airport to receive care from Brotherhood of Steel medics.

Dwellers manage Darnell Bright called the incident an "unfortunate reality of the Commonwealth."

Vault 81 stated that Wright and Delaney would miss the rest of the 2317 campaign. Wright was batting .300 with 7 home runs and 34 RBI. Delaney was 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in 32.2 innings.

July 14 - The Sunshine Tidings organization announced that the Marshfield club affiliate in the MML has renamed its stadium to a historical figure, The Marshfield Park stadium will now be known as Daniel Webster Memorial Field. Webster was a former politician and Secretary of State under three U.S. presidents.

BMU, GBRL Regular Seasons End

The 88-game regular season for both the Boston Minor Union (A) and Greater Boston Rookie League (R) have come to a conclusion and the four division winners in each of the two minor leagues will begin their playoff pursuits.

Happy days are here for the playoff-bound teams. The Boston Minor Union regular season is over and the playoffs will soon get under way to determine the league's best team for 2317. The clubs are planning their lineups and pitching rotations, going over scouting reports, trying to glean bits of information that might give them the edge. Nothing is seemingly left to chance. It takes a lot of talent and sometimes a little luck to bring home the Boston Minor Series trophy.

The Boston Minor Union playoffs begin today with the Association Championship. For one lucky team, destiny is not far away. Soon one of the playoff teams will win the Boston Minor Series and be honored as the best of the best. In due time, they can have their parade, hoist up that championship banner, and celebrate. It will be the crowning glory of the 2317 season. Here are the clubs that will be in action today:
Bristol Blitz (DC) vs Melrose Eyebots (Qui) and Meriden Attack Dogs (Cam) vs DB Tech Nuclear Physicists.(Lex).

The 2317 Greater Boston Rookie League season has ended. Most clubs and most players are headed home for the year, but a few good teams will head to the playoffs, which are slated to start soon. They will get a chance to be the league's champion. All they have to do is win the Rookie Series -- a not-so-easy task. To win it takes a combination of good pitching, good defense and timely hitting -- and occasionally some lucky bounces of the ball.

With a championship to be decided, the Greater Boston Rookie League is filled with excitement. There's nothing like the thrill of the playoffs. There will be some career-defining moments played out in the coming days. There will be some heroes, some great plays, some blunders and some failures, but it will be a great time for fans. Playoff baseball is here and it gets underway today. The League Championship starts today with this slate of games:
Brattleboro Collectors (GS) vs Croup Manor Leprechauns (Nah) and Norwalk Pickpockets (JP) vs Woonsocket Butchers (Lex).

Easy Town's Stellar 2 Weeks Puts Them Atop Power Rankings

We are now at the All-Star Break/Trade Deadline portion of our season, and we will begin again at the top teams after featuring most teams out of the playoff hunt. Two of those teams have already made moves, and a few teams have already tried to secure that last piece of the puzzle to boost them to the top to end the season. After 100 games and 30 to go, we think eight teams are still alive for a playoff spot in the NCA, while we give nine teams that distinction in the SCA. The order is listed below the power rankings with three lines: currently in, currently alive, and currently out. Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Brotherhood League

The Assaultrons are three games up on Lexington for the top league leader record but only two up on the BL's The Slog. Both Easy Town and the Ghouls have been hot for most of July, giving them some distance from 3rd and 4th place teams, Malden and Nahant, respectively. All of Nordhagen Beach, County Crossing, and Salem are picking in three of the top four spots in the 2317 Draft by current records.

The Trons are primed to make their second-straight Sole Survivor Series appearance. Easy Town is 1st in runs scored (593) with home runs (7th with 107) being the only offensive statistic they are not dominating. Eighth hitter, RF Topher Spark (.278/5/31), has the lowest batting average in the starting lineup. Pitching may be the trouble spot, especially starting pitching (12th with a 4.98 ERA) where Red Eagle's (10-5) 4.48 ERA is the best.

Institute League

Lexington still leads the IL but has seen some of the distance shortened with Starlight and Concord being hot as of late. At 8-2 in their last 10, the Radstags are the CBO's hottest team. Fort Hagen has been cold as of late and dropped below .500. With the news that Nuke Laloosh is out for the rest of the regular season, the Silver Shroud may not actually be in the playoff race at all. All of Cambridge, Sunshine Tidings, and Bunker Hill have too many holes to close the gap.

Lexington was the champs of the NCA just two seasons ago, so the three-team race for the NCA's top slot with Easy Town (2316) and The Slog (2314), the last three NCA champions are all in it to win it again. This season, the Synths are getting it done with pitching, including being 2nd in the NCA in runs allowed (419) and Starters ERA (3.60). Ace Deedee Martinson (13-8, 2.70), 38, is in the Vim! Pitcher Award discussion. He finished 2nd in voting in 2305 for the award.

Minutemen League

Jamaica Plain went 7-3 in their last 10, while Atom went 5-5, making a tied league a two-game lead by the Red Rockets. Quincy is there, too, tied with the Cats, whom the Granites have been unable to beat so far this season in five games. In a good association, Southie, Goodneighbor, and University Point are all out of the race and have been offloading talent.

The Cats were the last ML team to appear in the Sole Survivor Series before Quincy went twice in the past three seasons. Atom won that year (2313), defeating Nahant. This season, remember when they went 3-17 in April? In May, June, and July they have been perhaps the best team in the CBO, going 51-29 (.638), just two percentage points below the Radscorpions' .640 winning percentage on the season. The Cats have relied on starting pitching (3rd with a 3.78 ERA) to lead the team. Ace SP K-9 Creep (9-8, 3.58) has been their best pitcher.

Railroad League

With an eight-game lead, Glowing Sea is the most comfortable of all league leaders. They are also three games up on the Trons for the CBO's best record. Three other good teams all above .500--Diamond City, FHE, and Oberland--look to be out of the RL race but are most certainly still in the championship race. Both Vault 81 and Egret are alive but barely and need to play much better in the last 30, heck, probably needing 20 wins to have a chance at the playoffs. Roxbury has played better as of late but is very much out of the running with a seven-game gap between them and the current 6th seed.

The Radscorpions have not known suffering, set to make their fourth playoff appearance in just their eighth season of existence. What they have not done is to win the RL (3rd place finishes in each of their previous three appearances). They also won their first and second playoff series last season, defeating Diamond City and #1 Vault 81 before dropping the SCACS to the Granites. This season, they are #1 for now but may have some holes to consider. One is that the offense is not scoring enough, 10th in runs scored (456). Part of that is their low rating in power (10th with 95 home runs) and base speed (9th in steals with 67). Enigma Montgomery (.287/11/48) leads the team in steals with 44 but almost no one else can swipe bases. He is also second on the team in homers.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

July 23 - It was an exceptional week for Innis Sark of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud.

First he beat the devil out of the ball, hitting .435 and as you would expect, he was voted the Player of the Week in the North Charles Association. Last week Sark went 10-for-23, notched 3 home runs and 11 RBIs and scored 8 runs. All in all, a very good week for him.

This season, Sark is hitting at a .287 pace with 9 home runs, 52 RBIs and has scored 55 times.

Swinging a hot stick last week, Sheedy Smith picked up the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award today.

The 24-year-old first baseman for Jamaica Plain lashed 8 hits in 15 at-bats as he put together a .533 average with 5 home runs. Smith also drove in 11 runs, scored 7 times and compiled a .632 OBP.

This year, Smith is batting .327 with 14 home runs. He has scored 44 runs and driven in 48.

July 30 - What a performance by Trog Alderod of the The Slog Ghouls! The first baseman really tore up North Charles Association pitching and easily claimed the Player of the Week Award.

The 24-year-old hit .478 with 5 home runs and 12 RBIs. For the week he was 11-for-23 and scored 8 runs.

Alderod is currently hitting at a .274 pace with 19 home runs, 67 RBIs and has scored 55 times.

Jurgen Windcaller of the Oberland T-51s culminated a sensational week of play by being named the South Charles Association Player of the Week.

He rocked the opposition with a .458 batting average, 11 hits in 24 at-bats, no home runs and 4 RBIs while scoring 8 times.

Hitting .279 to date, Windcaller has 1 home run and 23 RBIs. He has played in 97 games.

CBO Noteworthy News

July 18 - The Ninjas and Deathclaws pulled the trigger on a deal that will see 20-year old 3B Sluggo Luge head to University Point in exchange for 29-year old C Hugo Steadymaster, 23-year old minor league SS Dovetail Osborne, 20-year old minor league LF Ash Wrigley, and 19-year old minor league LHP Huck Enduck. A source close to Egret officials said, "The teams spent long hours coming to the agreement and in the end, both agreed the deal should help both clubs."

Luge is currently hitting at a .306 pace with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs. He has played in 47 games and scored 10 times.

This year, Steadymaster has 8 home runs and a .263 batting average.

July 22 - Trade winds have been blowing through The Slog. This time, a deal has materialized between the Ghouls and Brews. According to sources inside the organization, The Slog will ship 20-year old minor league RHP Arcade Fourcade to Southie for 23-year old RHP Buzzcut McDonald.

This season, he has made 15 relief appearances, collecting no saves. Fourcade has worked 18 innings, yielding 29 hits and giving out 7 free passes while striking out 10. He has a 1-2 record with a 7.00 ERA.

To date this season, McDonald is 12-5 with 23 starts and an ERA of 3.48 with 105 strikeouts in 142.1 innings.

July 22 - BNN has learned the Goodneighbor Hancocks have reportedly worked out a deal with the Starlight Killers. Sources close to the Hancocks indicated that a trade has been reached in principle where 23-year old SS Jordan Johnson, 23-year old minor league CF Automatic Lawson, and 22-year old minor league RHP Irvin Ray will be swapped to Goodneighbor with 32-year old 1B Brian DeLong and 21-year old minor league RHP Kyle Hunt heading to Starlight. Neither organization would comment on the report, saying it was club policy not to speak about a trade until it was finalized.

Batting .309 to date, DeLong has 10 home runs and 44 RBIs.

In his 2317 season totals, Johnson has no home runs, .267 BA, .327 OBP, 1 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

July 30 - Sometimes a change of scenery can be a beneficial to a baseball player. That is the hope in Jamaica Plain and University Point as the teams came to an agreement today which sends 23-year old minor league 1B Pistol Holder and 24-year old minor league 2B Luke Holdman to the Deathclaws and 21-year old RHP Swampy Tamragouri and 20-year old C Gary Email to the Red Rockets. "Only time will tell if this is the right move for everyone," stated the University Point GM.

This year, Tamragouri has earned 20 saves, made 35 relief appearances, fanned 37 hitters in 37 innings and posted an ERA of 2.92 and a 2-5 record.

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 August 2317

The August 1 Super Post

CBO Top Performances in July

Hitters - Bubbler Mayhem, as was covered in our "Noteable News" section in the July 16 report, set a CBO record with seven hits and a game score of 125. However, he did not earn July's top hitting performance. That honor went to another record setter, Phantom Vargas of Vault 81. On July 26, Vargas had an extraordinary day in a 17-4 thrashing at Oberland, setting the SCA's single-game RBI record and tying for his squad's best home run day with three. Vargas was 4 for 5 with three home runs, two of which were grand slams, a walk, four runs scored, and 10 RBI. he finished with a game score of 146, the best in 2317.

Pitcher - He only tied for the top of the season, but the top is the top. On July 21, Concord's Kevin Gauzeman pitched a complete-game, three-hitter, shutting out Southie, 8-0. With his game score of 89, Gauzeman tied. In the game, Gauzeman recorded a walk and struck out nine in 132 pitches. Returnig from injury, Gauzeman moved to 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA in seven starts.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Zap Mast, the The Slog third baseman, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .438 batting average with 39 hits, 10 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 27 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the North Charles Association Batter of the Month honors for July.

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

CBO All-Star Game

There's a whole lot of pride on the line when the best baseball players throughout Commonwealth Baseball Organization gather for the all-star game.

It was no different this year, as the South Charles Association bested the North Charles Association by a score of 3-2, in a spirited contest played at Nuka Park.

"It might be a little lower intensity than the regular season or playoffs, but everyone in that clubhouse still wants to win this game," said Alex Bragman of the South Charles Association, who was named the game MVP.

Bragman's career batting average stands at .280, and he has 91 home runs.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

1 August 2317

Victory, Dark Maintain Division Leads

The Victory Cave Crickets and Dark Bloodworms still appear to be on a crash course to the Nuka Series with just 19 of the season's 90 games remaining.

The Cave Crickets are four games up on Grape in the North Bradberton Division, with Quantum and Wild pretty much eliminated from contention. In the South Bradberton Division, the Bloodworms have a three-game lead on Quartz, with Orange seven back. Cherry, winners of the 2315 Nuka Series, is in last place.

Big Bear McIntosh is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Orange second baseman joined that select company when the Nuka World League announced the results of July's voting.

McIntosh totaled 38 hits, 12 walks, 5 home runs, 24 RBIs and 18 runs scored last month to put together a .404 batting average and .467 on-base percentage.

So far this season, McIntosh is batting .345 with 11 home runs, 50 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He has 98 hits in 284 at-bats, 27 walks and a .401 OBP. McIntosh has played in 70 games.

Kory DiLeva is the latest Nuka World League Pitcher of the Month award winner. The Grape starter stood out on the hill time and again last month and finished July with a sparkling 4-1 record.

In 5 starts last month, he fanned 26, walked 9 in 41.1 innings and posted a 2.18 ERA. DiLeva held opposing teams to a .274 batting average when he was on the mound.

This season, DiLeva has rung up 10 wins and 5 losses in 16 games. He has an ERA of 3.43 and has fanned 63 batters in 118 innings.

When it came to hitting the baseball, Swayne Pringle had few peers in the Nuka World League last month. The gifted second baseman for Victory tagged opposing pitchers for a .424 average and was voted the Rookie of the Month for July.

Included in his stats were 42 hits, 2 homers, 29 runs scored and 11 RBIs.

So far this year, Pringle is batting .405 with 8 home runs and 34 RBIs.

APL

The Amusement Park League only has 13 games left, so some stragglers will need to catch up soon if they want a playoff appearance in 2317. The Nuka Plant Electrics are not in that discussion, having already been eliminated.

Division leaders are the Nuka Bottling Plant Pack and Dunmore Ferris Wheels. Dunmore has a Magic # of 10.

Claw Clawney has a lot going for him. The Nuka Jolly third baseman just broke into the majors this year and now the Amusement Park League has just picked him as its top hitter for July.

In 18 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .338 with 6 home runs, 13 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Thus far this season in 47 games, Clawney is batting .289 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He has 50 hits in 173 at-bats.

Galactic Zone starter August Morgueman really put the chill on opposing teams in July and today was acclaimed the Amusement Park League Pitcher of the Month.

He excelled with a 3-0 mark and 3.07 ERA in 5 starts. In 29.1 innings, he fanned 17 and walked 14.

In 6 starts this season, Morgueman has rung up a 3-1 record and a 3.57 ERA.

Harbor Division a True Race, Dalton Farm Dominating Fog Division

The Harbor Division has become a two-team race, with the Far Harbor Ghoul Whales leading the Grand Hotel Atoms by a game with 19 to play. Trailing by 8 and 9 games, Cranberry Island and Acadia are also not out of the race but need to win at a high clip to make it to the 2317 Vim! Series.

The Fog Crawlers lead National Park by six games in the Fog Division, keeping them comfortable in the final month of the season. Echo Lake is 19 back, meaning they would need to go 19-0 with Dalton Farm going 0-19 just to tie. Eden Meadows is already eliminated.

National Park Gulpers 31-year-old first baseman Cross Sykes hit his way to a .426 batting average and the Vim! League Batter of the Month award in July.

He had 10 home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored for the month.

For the year, Sykes is batting .393 with 17 home runs, 40 RBIs and 55 runs scored.

What Ignitor Racine of the Grand Hotel Atoms did to Vim! League hitters in July was criminal. He assaulted them, broke them and walked off leaving them lifeless and lost as he stole away with the Pitcher of the Month award for his barbaric behavior.

"Racine was truly dominant out there," an opposing hitter said to reporters. "He really made hitters miserable."

The 24-year-old reliever threw 13.1 innings in 13 relief appearances as he registered 8 saves, 8 strikeouts, and notched a 2-1 record and 4.05 ERA for the month.

This year, his season stats show Racine has 8 saves in 13 relief appearances with a 2-1 mark and 4.05 ERA.

Paul Atreides earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the Vim! League for last month's performance. The boyish Eden Meadows left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Atreides hit .526 with 3 home runs, 14 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

In this current campaign Atreides is hitting at a .415 clip with 5 home runs and 25 RBIs.

MDIL

There are 13 games to play, but the Mount Desert Island League is sure to have a fight until the end. In the Small Bertha Division, three games separate first from last, with Rock Point leading Nucleus by a game. In the Old Longfellow Division, first to last is only separated by five games. MS Azalea is at the top, one up on Haddock Cove.

Not known for his offensive prowess, Tony Ratliff set the league afire in July and took home the Mount Desert Island League Batter of the Month award.

The Haddock Cove first baseman posted a steady .446 batting average, 5 home runs, 23 RBIs and 13 runs.

So far this season, Ratliff has recorded a .395 batting average with 30 hits, 5 home runs, 24 RBIs, 13 runs scored and a .444 OBP.

Gilb Ramos certainly found a groove in July. The Nucleus starter posted 3 wins last month to easily claim the Mount Desert Island League Pitcher of the Month.

During the month Ramos was 3-1 with a 2.17 ERA. He made 5 starts, tossed 37.1 innings and had 13 strikeouts.

This year, Ramos has posted a record of 7 wins and 5 losses with a 3.14 ERA. He has appeared in 13 games and struck out 36 in 94.2 innings.

Minor League Seasons Come to a Close

NEBL

Another New England Baseball League campaign is in the books. The regular season has ended and the playoffs are about to begin. It is a time of skill, talent -- and luck. And when all the games have been played, one team will survive and be crowned the 2317 New England Series champion.

It's playoff time. The best teams have emerged from the divisional battles and now it is the survival of the fittest. Only one team will survive and they will be crowned the New England Baseball League champions. Here are the matchups in the League Championship Series:
Everett Mutant Hounds (V81) vs Abernathy Adamantium (BH) and Waltham Wanderers (Lex) vs Warwick Mirelurks (Star).

MML

Another regular season is in the books, and the playoffs will begin in a couple of days. It will be a battle of survival -- and the final survivor will be the Massachusetts Minor League champions. The "haves" will be in their radiant glory, playing for the league title, while the "have-nots" will be at home, sitting by the hot stove until springtime.

To win the Massachusetts Minor League title is the zenith of any baseball career.

Players on postseason qualifiers will get the chance of a lifetime beginning today with the League Championship Series, where both heroes and goats will arise, but only one team will emerge as the Massachusetts Minor Series champion.

The playoffs are a time for managers to map out pitching and batting matchups and on-the-field strategy. Rivalries soar to new heights and destiny's fickle finger holds the fate of the teams and players. The League Championship Series begins today with these games:
Revere Beach Shoremen (Rox) vs Marblehead Grenades (Good) and Hull Lead Bellies (Qui) vs Hartford Melonheads (JP).

CBO Draft

Commonwealth Baseball Organization today released the final list of all players eligible for next month's rookie draft. Now that the list has been made official, close scrutiny of these players can be expected as scouts begin to review this year's up and coming talent.

BNN has added to its Transactions page a section dedicated to the draft pool, which will be available 30 days prior to draft day.

The early favorites to be high picks are the following:
1. Headcase Stepniewski, 17 year-old 1B out of high-school.
2. Derek Cureall, 20 year-old CF out of college.
3. Biddy Juhan, 20 year-old RF out of college.
4. Lance Boots, 16 year-old 1B out of high-school.
5. Otto Megaphone, 20 year-old 2B out of college.
6. Sandy Slinky, 20 year-old CF out of college.
7. Bad Company Gondek, 21 year-old LF out of college.
8. Sevenfold Abrams, 22 year-old C out of college.
9. Music Man Hughes, 19 year-old 3B out of college.
10. Talley O'Reilly, 17 year-old RHP out of high-school.

The opening unofficial Mock Draft based on the 2316 draft order:

Brotherhood League

Easy Town may be on a four-game losing streak right now, but they have a six-game lead over The Slog and a Magic # of 8. Nahant and Malden are each just two back of the Ghouls for 2nd place and firmly hold a wildcard spot over Fort Hagen. Nordhagen Beach is not officially eliminated but will be soon. The bottom three are all out.

The Ghouls are still battling to show that they are a team to reckon with in 2317. They are 3rd in runs scored (627) and 5th in runs allowed (552), giving them a good balance. Four players--Gavin Deux-Gas (25), Trog Alderod (22), Zap Mast (21), and Hammer Longball (20)--have 20 or more home runs, leading The Slog to tied for 2nd in the NCA with 148. Pitchers Buzzcut McDonald (3.18), Flirt Perez (3.78), and Quincy Jones (3.97) all have an ERA under 4.00.

Institute League

With a 3-7 mark in their last 10, Lexington's once steady lead is now down to a CBO low for league leaders of three games up on 2nd. That 2nd place team is Starlight, which just picked 2nd overall last November.

When the Killers picked 2nd overall, they were pleased to get the #1 rated players, 2B Cool Papa Cornwell out of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Cornwell played 14 games with the BMU's Cranston Boomers before getting the call up. Now, 97 games in, with 92 starts, Cornwell (.287/6/38/19 SB) looks to already be established at the top of the lineup. Starlight has been relying on dominant pitching, though, leading the NCA in runs allowed (481) and Bullpen ERA (3.28) with the 3rd-best Starters ERA (3.98). Ace Mercury Morris (12-9, 3.29) has been a steady pitcher all year, and Phil Pearlman (7-13, 3.97) has held teams' runs down without the run support from his team.

Minutemen League

At one point, Jamaica Plain was the CBO's hottest team, winning their first 13 games played in August. That got them in contention for the #1 overall seed before a three-game losing streak sent them back. However, the Red Rockets now have a five-game lead and a Magic # of 9. Atom is in 2nd, followed closely by Quincy. The rest of the ML is pretty much out, with Spectacle Island in 4th at seven games under .500.

After breaking their losing streak, the Rockets became just the third team in the CBO to win 70 games, With just 13 to play, that makes their Magic #4 to clinch a playoff spot. Jamaica Plain leads most offensive categories in the SCA, including runs scored (680) and homers (154). 3B Tre' Morgueman (.338/33/102) is in contention to win the Triple Crown, but that will be a tall task to catch up with Oberland's Kyle Powell (.360) for the top batting average. Pitching has been decent, but Tristan Martell (14-5, 3.58) has helped to skew those stats upwards compared to his fellow starters.

Railroad League

Glowing Sea continues to win about 2 out of every 3 games consistently, and they now have a Magic # of 6 to claim the RL and a Magic # of 8 to clinch the #1 overall seed in the SCA playoffs. All of Diamond City, Oberland, and FHE are above .500 and most in the playoff race, though all of Vault 81, Roxbury, and Egret are technically alive.

The Swatters are in the strongest position of all teams not at the top of their league and seem set to earn the #3 seed, or, at worst, the #4 seed. Diamond City is sttill winning with pitching, including being 2nd in runs allowed (477) and Starters ERA (3.49). Third starter, Dropper Millieu (11-6, 3.05), has the best ERA. Offense still lags far behind, including being 11th in runs scored (527).

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

August 6 - Easy Town fans have something to crow about today as Easy Town left fielder J.J. Gray nabbed the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award for his performance over the last seven days.

"I know there are times when it's hard to lay off pitches. Everyone goes through stretches when he's too eager to put the ball in play. You know, though, I feel like this past week I was able to get in the right frame of mind and just let things come naturally," said Gray.

He posted a .571 average (12-for-21) this past week with 1 home run, 5 RBIs, and 8 runs scored.

Gray is currently batting .312 with 22 home runs and 95 RBIs.

It was an extraordinary week for Phantom Vargas of the Vault 81 Dwellers. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .571, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the South Charles Association. Last week Vargas went 8-for-14, racked up 3 home runs and 8 RBIs and scored 4 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Vault 81 catcher.

This season, Vargas has banged out 93 hits in 294 at-bats for a .316 average with 18 home runs. He is getting on base at a .419 pace and his totals also include 64 RBIs and 58 runs scored.

August 13 - Spud Sewell has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 22-year-old shortstop of the Salem Witch Hats had a hot bat in the North Charles Association over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Sewell batted .478 with 11 hits in 23 at-bats, 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

This year, Sewell is batting .311 with 14 home runs.

Adavald Vigilant demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

The Quincy left fielder wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .417 average (10-for-24) with 6 home runs and 10 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

This season in 98 games, Vigilant has hit at a .289 clip with 91 hits, 19 home runs, 61 RBIs and 69 runs scored.

August 20 - This week Gavin Deux-Gas, shortstop for the The Slog Ghouls, hit his way to the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

Deux-Gas put on a hitting clinic with a .500 average as he belted and battered NCA pitchers for 12 hits in 24 at-bats, 2 home runs, 4 RBIs and scored 9 runs.

So far this year, Deux-Gas is batting .346 with 25 home runs and 64 RBIs.

It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Spike Emerson, the University Point Deathclaws 25-year-old third baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 13 hits in 21 at-bats, compiling a .619 average with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

This year, Emerson is hitting .274 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .342 clip and scored 51 runs.

CBO Noteworthy News

July 30 - Each year, one slugger is crowned the champion of the Home Run Challenge. This time, it was Will Hell. He out-hit the competition at The Stone House to win the event. The Quincy Granites second baseman out-swung Floren Habern in the final round, 6-5.

"There are no slouches in this contest," said Hell. "To win it, you have to earn it."

Hell has a lifetime .313 average with 632 hits, 120 doubles, 10 triples, 125 home runs and 379 RBIs to date.

August 4 - It was one of Racky Westheim's better days at the ballpark. The Oberland T-51s toppled the Roxbury Rad Sox 6-2 and the catcher recorded his 2000th career hit.

During his career, Westheim has hit .315 with 2002 hits, 122 home runs, 836 RBIs and scored 798 runs.

August 7 - County Crossing fans reacted with disappointment to the news that Bloodbugs third baseman Taygun Topaloglu has decided to retire.

Lifetime Topaloglu is batting .273 and has totaled 271 home runs.

August 7 - The County Crossing contest with Nordhagen Beach featured a real shining moment: Babs Rooth, the Bloodbugs first baseman, collected career base hit #2500. That his team lost the game, 6-1, took away only a little bit of the luster. Fittingly, the 38-year-old Rooth, who went 1-for-2, received a warm ovation from the Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium crowd.

His numbers show Rooth is carrying a .331 lifetime batting average with 554 home runs and 1629 RBIs.

August 9 - Glowing Sea began a campaign for SP Alex Language for the 2317 Vim! Pitcher Award. Their campaign is: "Speak our Language. Now, say it with us: "Alex Language for Vim! Pitcher of the Year."

The Radscorpions plan to travel with the banner on their remaining road trips and pass out sets of giant lips for all home games where Language pitches. His next scheduled home start is August 14 against Southie.

August 18 - Nahant has lost Bulleye Shooterson for the rest of the regular season after a super mutant attack just outside Roxbury following the game against the Rad Sox. No further details are available at this time, but team officials mentioned a "wound that needs healing."

August 19 - You can't fire the players when times get tough. Jared Herdman learned that the hard way today as he was dismissed from his managerial position with the County Crossing Bloodbugs.

Citing a need to "shake things up," a team official said it was time to move on.

"We respect what Jared has done for the club and we thank him for his time here, but we just think the future of the Bloodbugs needs to be handled by someone else and needs to move in a different direction," said club general manager Cent in a prepared statement.

For his part, Herdman remained upbeat about the decision.

"I know it's a business and sometimes you've just got to make a change," he said. "I want to thank County Crossing for the opportunity to manage here."

Team officials are expected to announce an interim manager in the next few days.

August 20 - A spokesperson for the Salem Witch Hats today confirmed that Jaa Thirtysix will not be back next year. The Witch Hats starting pitcher has decided to retire.

Thirtysix's won-lost record is 165 wins and 155 losses with a 3.93 ERA and opposing hitters have compiled a .248 batting average against him.

A slump was a rare occurrence for him. Playing in 86 games, Pringle contributed 144 hits, 9 home runs and 41 RBIs to the Cave Crickets attack.

APL

Dalton Farm, Grand Hotel Win Vim! Divisions

Another Vim! League season has come to a close. The clubs that made the playoffs will be doing battle in a few days, while the also-rans will go home with their heads hung low, thinking of what might have been. The playoffs will culminate with the two best teams going head-to-head for the league's title in the Vim! Series. To win it, you need talent, skill and a little luck.

The regular season set the stage and pruned down the number of title contenders. Now the clubs that made the cut will go at it on the diamond in the 2317 Vim! League playoffs. It's the first step in the race to win the Vim! Series trophy. The Vim! Series starts today with these clubs set to battle:
Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers vs Grand Hotel Atoms.

Junkyard Dog Williams of the National Park Gulpers capped an impressive season by winning the Vim! League batting crown. The 24-year-old Williams, who hit .397, proved to be a tough out for opposing pitchers all year long.

Included in his stats were 126 hits, 18 home runs and 63 RBIs. He also scored 80 runs and played in 79 games.

MDIL

The dust has cleared from the regular season pennant chase and the clubs that survived are getting ready to do battle in the 2317 Mount Desert Island League playoffs. Only the strong survive to play for the Mount Desert Island Series championship. It's the playoffs -- a very special time to baseball fans everywhere -- and they start in just a few days.

The playoffs in Mount Desert Island League start today and all the clubs that made it into the Mount Desert Island Series are hungry to claim the ultimate prize: the champion's mantle -- the Mount Desert Island Series title. Love how good the Radscorpions have been. Unless they take the foot off the gas they have to be the favorite to win it all

Their pitching is something to admire this season compared to the rest of the CBO. The interesting part is that they are not the most talented staff but have definitely been efficient, even rookie injury replacement Black Red (11-7, 3.68). If they were more efficient on offense, I would believe them to be unbeatable. They have a Magic# of 1 to clinch the top seed, so they are in good position.

Last Week CBO Races

We are in the final week of the 2317 CBO season with just seven games remaining per team on average. In the NCA, only one team, Easy Town, is officially in the playoffs. All of Glowing Sea, Jamaica Plain, and Diamond City have clinched a spot in the SCA.

In the NCA, the Assaultrons have clinched the top record in the association. The Trons lead both The Slog in the BL and Lexington in IL by eight games. The Synths have a Magic # of 3 to clinch the IL. Starlight trails by five. The Ghouls and Synths both have a Magic # of 1 to clinch a playoff spot.

The outlook for the playoffs looks like this unless there are some extreme winning or losing streaks in the last week to skew the order:
1. x-Easy Town
2. Lexington
3. The Slog - Mal(3), @ST(2), @Sal(2) - Expected 5-2 - 74-56
4. Malden - @Slog(3), CC(2), NB(2) - Expected 4-3 - 70-57
5. Starlight - @Rox(3), @Lex(2), ST (2) - Expected 5-2 - 69-61
6. Fort Hagen - Cam(3), @Con(2), @Nah(2) - Expected 5-2 - 67-63 (better record vs NCA)
---------------------------------
7. Nahant - CC(3), ET(2), FtH(2) - Expected 3-4 - 67-63

In the SCA, Glowing Sea seems to be the #1 seed. The Red Rockets appear to be #2. Diamond City has a five-game advantage over both Atom and Quincy, so we can assume they will clinch #3. Here is the outlook:

1. Glowing Sea
2. Jamaica Plain
3. Diamond CIty
4.Atom - @SI(3), @Qui(2), Sou(2) - Expected 4-3 - 71-59
5. Quincy - @JP(3), Atom(2), Good(2) - Expected 3-4 - 70-57
6. FHE - @DC(3), Egr(2), SI(2) - Expected 4-3 - 69-61
------------------------------------
7. Oberland - @V81(3), DC(2), GS(2) - Expected 3-4 - 67-63
8. Vault 81 - Obe(3), JP(2), @Rox(2) - Expected 5-2 - 65-65

NEBL Playoffs

A celebratory mood filled the air as the Everett Mutant Hounds closed out the season with a 10-3 victory over the Warwick Mirelurks at The Homestead to capture the New England Series, 4-3.

Giving the Mirelurks credit for a hard-fought series, Mutant Hounds players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned New England Baseball League champions.

"We felt like this was our year all season long," said center fielder Tommy Haudson, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did."

It was the 1st in franchise history. During the Patriot League Maine Division regular season Everett put up a 62-46 record and finished first.

"They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected Warwick manager Rack Toetip. "We played good ball, they just played better than us."

MML Playoffs

The Hartford Melonheads ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Revere Beach Shoremen 5-4 to win the Massachusetts Minor Series.

Hartford won the series 3-2, capturing the title for the 1st time.

"We stepped it up at the right time, and now we're the champs," said Hartford manager William Howard Chief. "It's a great feeling."

The champs finished the regular season 70-38 and claimed first place in the Stars League Carl Yastrzemski Division.

In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, series MVP and left fielder Mac Berger said the Melonheads have "great fans and they deserve this."

"I am so happy for our city right now," he said.

CBO Regular Season Ends, EasyTown-Glowing Sea as #1s

Happy days are here for the playoff-bound teams. The Commonwealth Baseball Organization regular season is over and the playoffs will soon get under way to determine the league's best team for 2317. The clubs are planning their lineups and pitching rotations, going over scouting reports, trying to glean bits of information that might give them the edge. Nothing is seemingly left to chance. It takes a lot of talent and sometimes a little luck to bring home the Sole Survivor Series trophy.

Some clubs have coasted to make the playoffs -- others have scrapped tooth and nail to get here. After a long, sometimes seemingly endless regular season, it gets down to who can win a short series -- by hook or crook, talent or luck. That's what it takes to capture the Commonwealth Baseball Organization championship.

NCA
1. Easy Town
2. Lexington
3. Malden
4. The Slog
5. Nahant
6. Starlight

There was quite a lot of turnaround from the 2316 playoffs, with just 3 of the 6 returning: Easy Town (#3 in 2316), Malden (#1 in 2316), and The Slog (#6 in 2316). Bunker Hill, Concord, and Cambridge were all replaced. Because of the turnover and experience, all of the returning teams have to be favorites to advance. The Assaultrons, defending NCA champions, are heavy favorites to return to the Sole Survivor Series.

SCA
1. Glowing Sea
2. Jamaica Plain
3. Diamond City
4. Atom
5. Quincy
6. FHE

The SCA had a lot less turnover with four of the top five seeds returning. Glowing Sea (#4 in 2316), Diamond City (#5), Atom (#2), and Quincy (#6) all return. The Granites (formerly Gunners) advanced to the championship in 2316 and swept the Trons for their first title. Jamaica Plain and FHE are newcomers, with preseason heavy favorites, Vault 81 and Oberland, both out.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

August 27 - When it came to hitting the baseball, Stormin Normin MacDonald was in a class by himself in the North Charles Association this past week. Nobody did it better.

The outstanding shortstop for Easy Town tagged opposing pitchers for a .579 average and was voted the Player of the Week Award. Included in his stats were 11 hits in 19 at-bats, 1 homers, 3 runs scored and 9 RBIs.

MacDonald is batting at a .308 pace this season, picking up 128 hits in 415 at-bats with 10 home runs, 78 RBIs and 85 runs scored.

It was an extraordinary week for Will Hell of the Quincy Granites. First he goes on a hot hitting streak, batting .379, then he is voted the Player of the Week in the South Charles Association. Last week Hell went 11-for-29, racked up 4 home runs and 12 RBIs and scored 5 runs. It was a heck of a week for the Quincy second baseman.

Hell is hitting .311 this season with 32 home runs, 95 RBIs and 86 runs scored. He has 144 hits in 463 at-bats.

September 3 - None named

CBO Noteworthy News

August 20 - A spokesperson for the Salem Witch Hats today confirmed that Jaa Thirtysix will not be back next year. The Witch Hats starting pitcher has decided to retire.

Thirtysix's won-lost record is 165 wins and 155 losses with a 3.93 ERA and opposing hitters have compiled a .248 batting average against him.

August 20 - Diamond Ball has gone through many bats during his playing career. None of them means as much to him as the one he used to crack career hit number 2000 at CURIE Inc. Field yesterday.

The 33-year-old Silver Shroud third baseman told reporters after the game, "I plan to keep this bat at home in my own private Hall of Fame."

It was a happy day for Ball from the standpoint of the 2000-hit milestone, but a little disappointing, too. Despite his achievement, Fort Hagen dropped the contest to the Vault 81 Dwellers 5-4.

For the day Ball finished the day with 2 hits in 4 at-bats.

To date Ball has a .336 career batting average and has totaled 438 home runs.

August 24 - Deedee Martinson of the Lexington Synths nailed down his 200th career victory with a 5-0 win over the Starlight Killers today at Valentine Detective Agency Field. Martinson, 38, fired 3 strikeouts over 6 innings of work. He gave up no runs, 2 walks and allowed 8 hits.

"I feel great," Martinson said afterward. "I try not to get caught up in the moment. It's hard with so much press coverage these days, but I tune all that out when I go out there and pitch."

In his career, Martinson has compiled a 200-150 record with a 3.83 ERA in 511 starts.

September 2 - The Quincy Granites really celebrated their 10-8 victory over the Goodneighbor Hancocks at The Stone House. Not only did the Granites win the game, but reliever Professor Harriel recorded his 200th-career save. The bullpen ace stopped Goodneighbor on no runs and 1 hit in his 0.2 innings of work to seal the triumph.

"It's a good milestone -- it doesn't happen very often," Harriel said. "I was out there when my teammates needed me 200 times, and I'm real proud of that."

Harriel has saved 200 games in his career with 408 strikeouts in 442.1 innings pitched. He has also racked up a 43-31 record and a 2.73 ERA.

September 3 - Alex Language of the Glowing Sea Radscorpions could be headed for the South Charles Association Vim! Pitcher Award after an unforgettable 2317 season. The Radscorpions pitching star won the league's Triple Crown, winning 17 games, striking out 168 and logging a 2.79 ERA -- all league bests.

"It's an honor," Language told BNN, "Not many pitchers can say they've won the Triple Crown. Usually the batting Triple Crown gets all the attention."

In his sensational year he registered 17 wins and 7 losses. An opposing manager said, "I can see how he won 17 games. What I don't understand is how he lost 7."

September 3 - And the Winner is... Red Jay Jones.

The 2317 North Charles Association batting race was won by the Sunshine Tidings catcher. Jones topped the batting chart with a .362 average.

For the season, he cranked out 151 hits, 30 home runs, scored 72 times and batted in 84.

September 3 - Congratulations are in order for Oberland third baseman Kyle Powell, as he was presented with the 2317 South Charles Association batting title today at a special awards ceremony.

Powell was honored for his league-leading .359 average. He collected 150 hits in 418 at-bats, including 27 doubles, 5 triples and 14 home runs. The 24-year-old Powell also had 65 RBIs and scored 59 runs.

CBO Top Performances of August/September

Hitter - It is a bit down on the season list for game score, but McMack Bingham's performance for the Cats on August 13 was the top score, 108, of August/September. That game score tied for 6th on the season with two others. In Atom's 11-1 victory over Roxbury, Bingham was 4 for 5 with a double, two home runs, three runs, and seven RBI.

Pitcher - It came late in the season, but Starlight's Jacques Of'Ten set the season mark with a game score on August 30 for the top pitching performance of the month and season. In a 7-0 drubbing at Lexington, Of'Ten pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out five in the process. The lone baserunner came in the bottom of the 8th with two outs when Shawn Sykes looped a flyball into right field and then advanced to second on Henry Hampster misplaying the ball attempting to maintain the no-hitter with a dive.

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Jim Geiger, the Cambridge right fielder, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .402 batting average with 41 hits, 4 home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 29 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the North Charles Association Batter of the Month honors for August.

This season, Geiger is batting .324 with 153 hits, 14 home runs, 71 RBIs, .423 OBP and has scored 102 runs.

SCA Hitter - Tre' Morgueman battered South Charles Association pitchers all August and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

In 27 games, Morgueman hit .324 with 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

Morgueman is hitting .335 this year with 35 home runs and 110 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .412, 61 walks and scored 100 times.

NCA Pitcher - Jalep Temper was firing on all cylinders in the month of August with 5 wins as he steamrolled all North Charles Association opposition on his way to the Pitcher of the Month award.

During the month Temper was 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA. He made 7 starts, tossed 48.2 innings and had 43 strikeouts.

In 32 starts this season, Temper has chalked up a 16-9 record and a 3.13 ERA.

SCA Pitcher - August's #1 hurler was Black Red of Glowing Sea. He gunned down South Charles Association hitters the whole month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award. The Radscorpions star piled up 6 wins and no losses to take the honor.

The 22-year-old Red added 25 strikeouts in 47 innings and 12 walks to his season record and compiled a 2.11 ERA. Other clubs hit .237 against him.

This season, Red has compiled a 12-7 mark, 3.47 ERA and made 23 starts.

NCA Rookie - Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered. That was how other clubs felt, when they faced Beasty Boyd Hollen in August, making the Malden hurler an easy choice for North Charles Association Rookie of the Month honors.

In 7 starts he breezed to a 3-0 record, racked up 13 strikeouts in 43 innings and posted a 3.77 ERA. Opposing hitters only managed a .288 batting average against him.

Hollen has made 17 starts so far this year and put up a 7-3 won-lost record with a 4.42 ERA. In 99.2 innings he has allowed 106 hits, walked 31 and struck out 37.

SCA Rookie - The best rookie has been named for August -- and the winner is Black Red.
The South Charles Association presented the trophy to him today in a press conference.
It was a sparkling 6-0 record that brought the Glowing Sea starter the Rookie of the Month award.

Red stood out last month with a 2.11 ERA in 7 starts, tossed 47 innings, fanned 25 and held opposing batters to a .237 average.

Red has gone 12-7 this season with an ERA of 3.47 and 73 strikeouts in 145.1 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .256 against him.

Dark-Dalton Farm to Meet for 17th SPA Series

The Dark Bloodworms of the NWL and the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers of the Vim! League will meet for the 17th SPA Series. The Bloodworms are making their first appearance, defeating the Victory Cave Crickets in seven games. It was Dark's second Nuka Series appearance and first championship in their 19-year history. The Fog Crawlers are old pros in the SPA Series, making their 6th appearance with five titles, including 2316 when they defeated Quartz in seven games.

Dark was not dominant like their opponent is but efficient in what they do. The Bloodworms finished 5th in the Nuka World League in runs scored (484) and 2nd in runs allowed (426). Top offensive stars were LF Everlast Barron (.321/19/57) and C Haymaker Abernathy (.373/14/43). SP Petyr Littlefinger (10-4, 3.47) has been their best pitcher. Goofy Chambers (5-3, 3.00) offers the best support from the bullpen.

This series may not be close. We're taking the Fog Crawlers to dominate for their second-straight SPA Series victory. Dalton Farm 4, Dark 1

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

3 September 2317

NWL Playoffs

Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better.

It was the latter case in 2317, as the Dark Bloodworms topped the Victory Cave Crickets 16-5 tonight at John-Caleb Bradberton Honorary Field to win the Nuka Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history.

"When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Dark left fielder Everlast Barron, who was named series MVP.

The Bloodworms took the series 4-3. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the South Bradberton Division and a 52-38 record.

Dark manager Tame Paul Williams grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Barron's words.

"Everlast said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said.

Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come.

APL Playoffs

This is the time of the baseball season when grown men are reduced to tears. This year, the Nuka Bottling Plant Pack were shedding tears of joy and the Grandchester Flying Ants those of sorrow.

The Pack topped the Flying Ants today 6-2 at Grandchester Mystery Mansion Park and locked up their 4th Amusement Park League Amusement Park Series championship, winning the series 4-2.

"To come this far and leave empty-handed is not easy," said Grandchester manager Billy Daulton.

The Pack finished the regular season in the APL North Division with a 32-28 record, ending up in first place in the division standings.

Vim! League Playoffs

It was all about winning for the Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers -- and win they did.

There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.

"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said shortstop Gus Hangman, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."

Dalton Farm defeated the Grand Hotel Atoms by a score of 6-3 at Blood Tide Stadium to take the series 4-2.

"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Dalton Farm manager Greg Hammerberg. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

MDIL Playoffs

With a 17-6 win over the Rock Point Barnacles at The Lumber Yard today, the MS Azalea Shipwrecks wrapped up their 4th title in team history.

The Shipwrecks left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game.

"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said MS Azalea manager Plow Holdgun. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."

A jovial mood filled the air as MS Azalea celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order.

"I hope they have a big celebration," Rock Point manager Bearskin Melton said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it."
