NL Batting Title Belongs to Jackson
Friday, October 6th, 1916 The league batting title is awarded each year to the one player that is able to separate himself, even if only by a single hit, from the rest of the hitters in the league. This year, the player to do that was Chicago's left fielder Joe Jackson. He hit National League pitching at a .307 pace over 147 games to take home the 1916 edition of the award. Cobb Tops AL with .358 Average Friday, October 6th, 1916 The American League season came to a close with Ty Cobb on top with a league-leading .358 batting average. The 29-year-old Washington center fielder swung the bat well the entire season. He concluded the year with 228 hits, 30 doubles, 11 triples and 2 home runs with 93 runs scored and 72 RBIs. NABL News: Playoffs begin Friday, October 6th, 1916 A playoff baseball game has a surreal atmosphere. Fans become one, roaring in unison at a great play and sharing the grief at blown opportunity. Victory and defeat play out in a rainbow of colors, sounds, smells and feelings. North American BaseBall League playoff baseball is a memorable experience. What is it like? Ask the 10-year-old sitting with his dad as he plucks a foul ball out of the air. Ask the veteran slugger who hits that walk-off home run. Ask the manager in the big game after coming from 10 games back to win the pennant. Ask the countless number of legends who have flourished or those greats who never won the big one. Or tomorrow, ask any of the rookies what it's like to play in one of the North American Series showdowns: Washington Senators versus New York Giants. Washington ay New York Game 1 Saturday 10/7 Polo Grounds IV Jim St Vrain (28-11, 2.02) vs Ernie Shore (18-11, 2.26) Washington 5 NY 3: Grover Gilmore goes 3-4, with a HR and drives in all three runs for the Giants. Ty Cobb goes 3-4, with a RBI for the Senators. New York at Washington Game 3 Tuesday 10/10 Griffin Stadium Ray Collins (15-17, 2.25) vs Walter Johnson (29-16, 2.20) Washington 5 NY 3: Ty Cobb goes 3-4, with 2 RBIs and Les Mann drives in two. Game 4 Wednesday 10/11 Ernie Shore (0-1, 4.05) vs Jim St Vrain (1-0, 3.68) Washington 4 NY 2: Eddie Grant goes 3-4 and drives in one. Ty Cobb goes 3-5 and scores twice. Tris Speaker adds a 2-3, RBI performance. Game 5 Thursday 10/12 George McQuillan (0-0, 1.00) vs Christy Mathewson (0-1, 0.96) Washington 6 NY 5: Dutch Zwilling and Elmer Smith each hit HRs for the Giants but Ty Cobb's 7th inning RBI single lifts Senators to their 6th NABL Championship Series. North American Series to Senators Thursday, October 12th, 1916 The 1916 North American BaseBall League season came to a close today at Griffith Stadium I, where the Washington Senators whipped the New York Giants 6-5 and won their 6th North American Series in history. MVP was Ty Cobb (11-21, .524, 4 RBIs) 1916 Draft The Top 5 Philadelphia Athletics draft Hod Eller (SP) Boston Red Sox draft Ross Youngs (CF) Pittsburgh Pirates draft Pete Killduf (SS) Chicago White Sox draft Fred Nicholson (RF) Detroit Tigers draft Ira Flagstead (RF) Senators top draft pick is Howdy Caton (SS) Major Retirements Rube Vickers (149-146, 3.11 era, 873 K) Davy Jones (.294 avg, 1710 hits, 744 RBIs) Eddie Plank (237-220, 3.33 era, 1684 K) Harry Howell (222-219, 3.57 era. one time Best Pitcher Award) Pop Foster (.297 avg, 1643 hits, 73 HR, 946 RBIs) Win Kellum (140-170, 3.19 era, 728 K) Kid Elbert (.287avg, 2102 hits, 26 HR, 1066 RBIs)

1916 Awards
National League Announces Glove Wizard Award Winners Tuesday, October 24th, 1916 Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1916 National League Glove Wizard Awards tonight: Pitcher: Jim Scott (Chicago Cubs) Catcher: Jack Lapp (Chicago Cubs) First Baseman: Del Gainer (Cincinnati Reds) Second Baseman: Eddie Collins (Chicago Cubs) Third Baseman: Tex Wisterzil (Boston Braves) Shortstop: Rabbit Maranville (New York Giants) Left Fielder: Johnny Bates (Pittsburgh Pirates) Center Fielder: Dutch Zwilling (New York Giants) Right Fielder: Whitey Witt (New York Yankees) AL Announces Best Glovemen for 1916 Tuesday, October 24th, 1916 Great glovemen can range far and wide to make a backhand stop or an over-the-shoulder catch -- and the best usually make it look easy. Today the winners of the American League Glove Wizard Award for 1916 were announced. These awards for defensive excellence go to: Pitcher: Ray Fisher (Detroit Tigers) Catcher: Palmer Hildebrand (Boston Red Sox) First Baseman: Dick Hoblitzel (Philadelphia Athletics) Second Baseman: Art Fletcher (Washington Senators) Third Baseman: Rogers Hornsby (St. Louis Browns) Shortstop: Ernie Johnson (Boston Red Sox) Left Fielder: Harry Hooper (Cleveland Indians) Center Fielder: Max Carey (Chicago White Sox) Right Fielder: Sam Rice (New York Yankees) Brooklyn Right Fielder Voted Best NL Rookie Wednesday, October 25th, 1916 The National League Newcomer of the Year Award winner for 1916 is Walton Cruise of the Brooklyn Robins. This season the 26-year-old right fielder played in 146 games, recording a .279 batting average with 4 home runs, 54 RBIs and 68 runs scored. Cadore Snags AL Rookie Award Wednesday, October 25th, 1916 Leon Cadore's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the St. Louis Browns and today he walked away with the 1916 American League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 25-year-old starter registered a 13-20 record this season in 40 starts. Over 340.1 innings he gave up 293 hits, struck out 110 and issued 118 walks as he held the opposition to a .232 batting average and fashioned a 2.19 ERA. Ragan Voted NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Friday, October 27th, 1916 The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1916 has been presented and the National League winner is Pat Ragan of St. Louis. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Ragan. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Cardinals star told reporters. Ragan excelled with an impressive 21-13 record in 36 starts. In 309 innings he yielded 248 hits and 88 walks, while striking out 139 and compiling a fine 1.63 ERA. Washington Pitcher Racks Up Outstanding Pitcher Award Friday, October 27th, 1916 Christy Mathewson of the Washington Senators might be an old man, but he can still pitch with the best of them. Today the 36-year-old hurler snagged the American League Outstanding Pitcher Award honors for his outstanding 1916 performance. He posted a 1.63 ERA with 29 wins, 16 losses, 140 strikeouts and 69 walks in 447 innings. Wally Schang Chosen NL's Best Hitter Saturday, October 28th, 1916 It was a season to remember for Wally Schang. He was one of the most dangerous men in the league when he had a bat in his hand, and the National League announced today that he has won the Outstanding Hitter Award for 1916. The New York catcher dominated opposing pitchers with a .273 batting average, 21 doubles, 13 triples, 7 home runs and 56 RBIs while compiling a .366 on-base percentage and scoring 72 runs. AL Announces Top Batter Award Saturday, October 28th, 1916 It's been a year of triumph for veteran Bobby Veach of the Washington Senators as he hit his way to the 1916 American League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 28-year-old veteran compiled a .315 average and .382 on-base percentage by putting together 205 hits, 38 doubles, 17 triples, 9 home runs and 66 walks. "I really don't know what to say," he said to the large crowd attending his ceremony. "It's such an incredible honor. I always dreamed that this day would come, but now that it's finally here... Someone pinch me, so I know I'm not dreaming!" Over the course of his 893-game career, McGeary was a .271 hitter with 1004 hits, including 5 home runs. He drove in 435 runs and also scored 578 times as well. McGeary played from 1871 until 1877. Service Inductee Hall of Fame Welcomes Tiernan Monday, October 23rd, 1916 One of the best players ever, right fielder Mike Tiernan, has received the ultimate honor for a baseball player -- being inducted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game. Tiernan received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said, nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 2275 games, Tiernan batted .311 with 2713 hits, 159 home runs, 1407 RBIs and 1749 runs scored.

Cobb Collects Hit Number 3000 Saturday, August 11th, 1917 Ty Cobb started out as a baby-faced rookie many seasons ago. Yesterday at Griffith Stadium I the Washington veteran joined the league's 3000-hit club. Cobb achieved that milestone with a 2-for-4 day in the Senators 6-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. He spoke to reporters in the clubhouse after the game and said, "Looking at the list of all the great players who have done this is humbling. It is a great honor to be among them." In his 1929-game career Cobb is batting .373 with 504 doubles, 265 triples, 85 home runs and 1307 RBIs. He has stolen 583 bases and scored 1778 times.

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Wednesday, September 12th, 1917 The biggest anxiety for 1917 new young players is getting drafted. For the young man with something to prove, simple entrance into the draft does not guarantee a big league contract. Some will suffer the excruciating torment of having to stand by as their competitors get picked before them, hoping that they get a slim chance to prove their skills anywhere. At any rate, teams now have 30 days to scout the draft pool before the draft is held. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Mule Watson, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Truck Hannah, 28 year-old catcher out of college. 3. Austin McHenry, 21 year-old left fielder out of college. 4. Hod Eller, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. Walt Kinney, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Charlie Hollocher, 21 year-old shortstop out of college. 7. Roy Leslie, 23 year-old first baseman out of college. 8. Fred Thomas, 24 year-old third baseman out of college. 9. Buzz Murphy, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 10. Babe Pinelli, 21 year-old third baseman out of college.

Final Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE STANDINGS
Jackson Crowned NL Bat King Friday, October 5th, 1917 The National League's top batter in 1917 was Joe Jackson of the Chicago Cubs, who snagged the title with a .323 average. The 28-year-old right fielder recorded 195 hits in 604 at-bats, 3 home runs and 70 RBIs in his league-leading season. Washington's Cobb Takes Home AL Batting Honors Friday, October 5th, 1917 Nobody in the American League outhit Ty Cobb this season. It became official today with the close of the regular season that the talented Washington center fielder was the best in the league. His .363 average put him at the top of the leaderboard and got him the AL batting title. Cobb's stats also included 218 hits, 36 doubles, 15 triples, 5 home runs, 86 RBIs and 117 runs. NABL News: Playoffs begin Friday, October 5th, 1917 Some clubs have coasted to make the playoffs -- others have scrapped tooth and nail to get here. After a long, sometimes seemingly endless regular season, it gets down to who can win a short series -- by hook or crook, talent or luck. That's what it takes to capture the North American BaseBall League championship. The top teams will vie in the North American Series starting today: Chicago Cubs versus Washington Senators.

Washington Senators Win 'Fall Classic' and Get Invited to the White House Saturday, October 13th, 1917 Besides winning the big game and all of the accolades that go along with it, the President of the United States has already let the team know that he would like them to visit later this year. When speaking of the call he received from the POTUS, Senators Manager, Snyder, seemed a bit flustered. "He told us that he wants to meet the boys that won the Series and asked if we would come to the White House. I told him, "Hell Yes...er-Yes Sir, Mr President". While the date has not yet been decided, we will be reporting upon the exciting event. 1917 Draft The first round of the draft.

1917 Awards
NL Honors Top Glovemen for 1917 Thursday, October 25th, 1917 In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1917 in the National League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Joe Benz (St. Louis Cardinals) Catcher: Ray Schalk (Philadelphia Phillies) First Baseman: Steve Evans (New York Giants) Second Baseman: Del Pratt (Boston Braves) Third Baseman: Tex Wisterzil (Boston Braves) Shortstop: Rabbit Maranville (New York Giants) Left Fielder: Ernie Walker (Brooklyn Robins) Center Fielder: Dutch Zwilling (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: Hub Northen (Cincinnati Reds) Season's Best Fielders Selected by AL Thursday, October 25th, 1917 Great glovemen can range far and wide to make a backhand stop or an over-the-shoulder catch -- and the best usually make it look easy. Today the winners of the American League Glove Wizard Award for 1917 were announced. These awards for defensive excellence go to: Pitcher: Hippo Vaughn (Detroit Tigers) Catcher: Charlie Maisel (New York Yankees) First Baseman: Dick Hoblitzel (Philadelphia Athletics) Second Baseman: Ed Hemingway (Washington Senators) Third Baseman: Jack Smith (Cleveland Indians) Shortstop: Dave Bancroft (Philadelphia Athletics) Left Fielder: Nemo Leibold (New York Yankees) Center Fielder: Max Carey (Chicago White Sox) Right Fielder: Benny Kauff (Cleveland Indians) 1917 NL Best Rookie Named Friday, October 26th, 1917 Dutch Ruether's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Boston Braves and today he walked away with the 1917 National League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 24-year-old starter registered a 13-19 record this season in 33 starts. Over 267.2 innings he gave up 257 hits, struck out 111 and issued 104 walks as he held the opposition to a .253 batting average and fashioned a 2.93 ERA. Youngs Sweeps Up Newcomer of the Year Award Friday, October 26th, 1917 In his first season, Ross Youngs not only won the hearts and cheers of the local Boston fans, he also nabbed the American League Newcomer of the Year Award. This gifted right fielder compiled a .303 batting average while collecting 4 home runs and 75 RBIs with a .370 on-base percentage and scoring 80 runs Best Hurler Award Presented by NL Sunday, October 28th, 1917 With speculation about his retirement gaining steam last offseason, Cubs ace Buck O'Brien had something to prove. He proved it in award-winning style as he accepted the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award today. The veteran Chicago hurler posted a record of 25 wins and 9 losses this year with a 2.33 ERA. In 37 starts he struck out 132 and walked 117 in 317.1 innings. American League #1 Pitcher Named Sunday, October 28th, 1917 The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1917 has been presented and the American League winner is Walter Johnson of Washington. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Johnson. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Senators star told reporters. Johnson excelled with an impressive 29-16 record in 51 starts. In 444.2 innings he yielded 375 hits and 100 walks, while striking out 254 and compiling a fine 2.08 ERA. Sisler Heads NL Best Batter List Monday, October 29th, 1917 George Sisler, the Pittsburgh first baseman, certainly made an impression on National League pitchers this past season. He punished them for 204 hits in 637 at-bats, 19 doubles, 15 triples, 6 home runs, and 67 RBIs and scored 83 times. That standout hitting earned him the National League Outstanding Hitter Award for 1917. Ty Cobb Chosen AL's Top Batter Monday, October 29th, 1917 It's been a year of triumph for veteran Ty Cobb of the Washington Senators as he hit his way to the 1917 American League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 30-year-old veteran compiled a .363 average and .443 on-base percentage by putting together 218 hits, 36 doubles, 15 triples, 5 home runs and 86 walks. He also scored 117 times and drove in 86 runs.
