1985 - No-Hitter

05/29/1985 - Stieb in Command, No-Hits Blue Jays

Excitement reigned at the ballyard today as Chicago hurler Dave Stieb tossed a baseball rarity -- a no-hitter. After defeating the Toronto Blue Jays at Comiskey Park 3-0 he was swamped by reporters in the clubhouse for postgame comments. "I'm just glad to be here. I want to help the club any way I can. Today I just went right at the Toronto as hard as I could, as long as I could." Stieb chalked up 3 strikeouts and allowed 3 walks in his superb performance. The Toronto manager had his own analysis of the ballgame: "I don't think we could have hit him with a howitzer today." So far this year Stieb has a 3-3 record with a 2.86 ERA.

1985 - May Standings

Well, May has finished so let's see how the standings are shaping up.

AL East: It looks like Toronto is for real as they've extended their lead to 2.5 games. Leon Durham is leading the way with a banner year.

AL West: We've caught California and end the month in a tie for first. We can't forget about Oakland though as they're only 2 games back.

NL East: The Cubs rode their 14-game winning streak from last to first but ended the Month a game back from the Mets who were tied with the Cubs in last at the end of April.

NL West: Cincinnati moved from third to first this month but it's shaping up to be a 3-way race with Houston and San Diego.

06/06/1985 - Evans Told No More RV Tailgating Parties

While no official word has been released on the situation, rumors have begun circulating that Dwight Evans has been ordered by the Giants front office to "knock off the tailgating parties." Many believe this is the result of the popularity of Evans's RV parties which have attracted several hundred fans before each game. Fellow team mate, Don Aase, expressed dismay if that were the case, but had concerns nonetheless. "With that many people, the drinking and what not, it can get a bit out of hand. We have a game to play and there's no real security out there. We all went out to check it out last time and I can say, it was a bit crazy." While Evans has seemingly been told he can no longer drive his RV into the teams parking lot, he casually stated, "No one has said I can't park it around the block, have they?"

1985 - Milestones

06/20/1985 - 200 Wins for San Diego's Reuschel

San Diego ace Rick Reuschel solidified his place in league history with his 200th career victory today at Jack Murphy Stadium. Reuschel and the Padres bested San Francisco 7-4. He checked the Giants on 8 hits in 8 innings and finished the day with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk. "I've worked hard for this day," Reuschel said. "Sometimes I didn't think it would happen. Most of the time it seemed so far off. Now it's here. It's like a dream!" Since he joined the league, Reuschel has collected 200 victories and 172 defeats with a 3.36 ERA.

In real life, Reuschel pitched through 1991 earning a 214-191 record with a 3.37 ERA

06/21/1985 - Bench Makes 500 Mark

A big sigh of relief erupted from Johnny Bench after he hit his 500th career homer. The Atlanta catcher said, "I'm glad it's over...now I can go back to just playing baseball." It was quite a day for Bench. He got his name in the league record books with 2 hits, 3 runs batted in, scored 3 runs and his team, the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-4. Bench knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player, clapping and grinning. He told reporters in the postgame interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 500th home run."

"It was great," his manager said. "He stood there and watched it...we all did. You just felt it was coming...you just had a sense he would hit it soon. He has been having a lot of good at-bats. It was great to get it out of the way."

Bench is hitting .270 lifetime with 2598 hits, 458 doubles, 27 triples, 500 home runs and 1746 RBIs to date. He has scored 1451 runs and stolen 73 bases.

In real life, Bench played through 1983 amassing 2048 hits, 380 HR's, and 1376RBI's while hitting .267.

06/28/1985 - Gullickson's Streak Is Over

Seattle ace Bill Gullickson was on a roll and took an 11-0 record into his start against Cleveland. Going back to last season, Gullickson was on a 16-game win streak and a 20-game undefeated streak. Well, the Indians and starter Mark Gubicza ended the streak by defeating the Mariners 7-3. Gubicza went the distance giving up 3 run on 9 hits to raise his record to 8-7. Gene Richards led the offense for Cleveland going 3/5 including a triple and a homer, knocking in 3 runs, and scoring 2.

I'm back baby!

It's been a long time - my daughters took over the laptop I used to play this game on way back when and now it's on its last legs.. Well, I finally got myself a new laptop, transferred the old files over, and have re-started playing my Mariners dynasty on OOTP13 ... yes, version 13! Crikey, I don't even know where or even if this will show up in the current threads. Let's get back into playing again!

No-Hitter!

The crowd sensed something special today at Three Rivers Stadium. They seemed to get a little louder with passing of each out and each inning. It was obvious on the scoreboard that the pitcher had a no-hitter.

"It was like the playoffs or the Round 2," Don Robinson told the press after the game."

It ended up a very special day for Robinson of the Pittsburgh Pirates -- he held the San Francisco Giants hitless and beat them 4-0, totaling 5 strikeouts with 2 walks and faced only 29 batters.

"Today was my day and I got lucky. I've had a couple of other shots that I've lost in the seventh inning and today I got through that and made it."

Lucky? Maybe so. But it usually takes more than luck to hold a team hitless.

Up to now Robinson has recorded a record of 6-7. In 17 starts he has fanned 76 batters in 119.1 innings with a 3.62 ERA.

Another No-Hitter!

The Baltimore Orioles and their fans had a lot to celebrate today as 30-year-old hurler Dan Schatzeder no-hit the Chicago White Sox 3-0 at Memorial Stadium.

"He mixed his pitches well, hit his spots...and got some help from above," said his pitching coach. "Dan really took it to another level today."

On his record-setting day Schatzeder had 4 strikeouts and 5 walks.

His manager added, "I don't remember a better pitched game. And how about our defense, too. We played some good 'D' today."

So far this year Schatzeder has a 4-12 record with a 5.42 ERA.

1985 All-Star Game!

(July 16, 1985)

The 1985 All-Star Game comes to you live from Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Jack O'Connor (NYM, 10-6, 3.32) took the hill for the NL while Doug Rau (TEX,12-8, 2.83) got the ball for the AL.

The teams traded goose-eggs through 5 before the NL broke through in the top half of the 6th. After Juan Samuel (PHI) lead off reaching base on an error, Wade Boggs (PIT) doubled him home. Boggs later scored on a Brad Komminsk (ATL) sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the 6th, the AL got on the board themselves with a solo homer by Mike Marshall (BOS) ... which set off the hometown crowd!

The AL tied up the game in the 6th when Jose Canseco (TOR) scored on a sacrifice fly by Alan Trammell (DET). Then, nodoby scored through the end of 9 innings meaning we're heading for extra innings!

The NL scored 2 runs in the top of the 11th inning. First, Dan Driessen (CIN) tripled, knocking in Tony Fernandez (NYM). Then, Driessen scored on a sac-fly by Ron Kittle (PIT).

It was left to Bob Welch (PHI) to pitch a 1-2-3 inning to seal the game for the NL. Wade Boggs (PIT) earned the MVP award based on his 2/3, 1 RBI, 1 Run performance.

J R Richard Gets 200th Victory

Astros ace J R Richard reeled in his 200th career victory by beating the New York Mets 9-2 at Shea Stadium. In his historic win, he notched 10 strikeouts in 9 innings, yielded 2 runs and 6 hits, while surrendering 3 walks.

"I tried to focus on each batter," said Richard after the game, "but as the game goes by, I couldn't help but think about the possibility. 200 is a big number. It's a pretty exclusive club and I'm honored to be a member."

During his career Richard has 200 wins and 137 losses and a 2.93 ERA.

[In real life, Richard (107-71) was a devastating pitcher whose career was cut short after suffering a stroke in 1980.]

Matlack Earns 200th Win!

Jon Matlack took the hill at Three Rivers Stadium today in search of his 200th career win. The 35-year-old ace found it against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After the historic victory, his manager told reporters, "I saw a tremendous sigh of relief when this thing was over. He was just looking to hug everyone in sight."

He worked 8 innings with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in the 4-1 victory, checking Pittsburgh on 3 hits.

"It a big milestone in my career," admitted Matlack. "When you get close to it, you worry about it a lot. It's done now... and I can relax and enjoy it."

During his career Matlack has compiled a 200-200 record with a 3.36 ERA in 480 starts.

Deadline Deals!

I made a few small deals as we got to the trading deadline.
  • Traded Gerald Perry (LF/1B) and Eric Bell (MR) to Atlanta for Stan Javier (CF/RF) and Harry Chappas (SS). This move gives me some depth in the minors in case of injury. Plus, moving Perry gives him a chance for more playing time in Atlanta and it allows me to call up Dan Pasqua (.330/.433/.730 with 46 HR's and 119 RBI's) from AAA.
  • Traded minor leaguers Brad Lesley (MR) and Steve Macko (IF) to Houston for minor league starter Don Schulze. This adds a bit of starting pitching depth ... again, in case of injury.
  • Traded reliever Enrique Romo (MR) from our AAA team to San Diego for minor leaguer Victor Mata (CF). This is a loyalty move to give Romo a chance back in the majors. Romo is the career Mariners leader in ERA (based on required IP) at 3.64, games pitched (350), and K/9 IP (7.0) while 3rd in career saves with 69. Romo is the last remaining original Mariner from their expansion team in 1977. Vaya con dios Enrique!

1985 - July Standings

Here's a summary as we pass the trading deadline and enter the dog-days of August.

AL East - Cleveland moved into a 1 game lead over Milwaukee with a torrid 21-7 July.

AL West - Seattle has opened up a huge 11 game lead over California.

NL East - St. Louis came back from 5 down to being tied with the New York. The Cardinals outdid even Cleveland in posting a 21-5 record including winning 12 in a row.

NL West - Houston moved into a half-game lead over Cincinnati.

All the races are up for grabs except for my Mariners. Hopefully, I didn't jinx myself!

1985 - Triple Crown Watch

Willie Upshaw (MIL) is having a huge year! He leads the AL in all 3 Triple Crown categories hitting .350 with 36 HR's, and 92 RBI's. My Paul Molitor (.345) is pushing him for the batting crown while my Greg Walker (83 RBI's) is a challenger for RBI's. The closest competitors for the HR crown are far away - Greg Brock (CAL) and Jose Canseco (TOR) have 23 and from Rob Deer (CHW), Daryl Strawberry (TEX), and Greg Walker (SEA) have 22 a piece. We'll see if Upshaw can hold on for the Triple Crown!
