Nineteen Innings Complete Game Loss One of the most amazing pitching starts in First Division history occurred on the 17th of August of this season, as young William Peace of the Burton United side tossed a complete game of nineteen innings, only to take the loss of one run to two against the visiting Red Devils of Manchester United. Peace gave up nine hits, walked two and hit two others by pitch for a total of only thirteen base runners the entire match, and he might have won after eighteen except that his catcher William Pinsmail was thrown out at home plate trying to score from second on a single to right centre field for the third out of that innings. Unfortunately the rest of Peace's luck ran out in the top of the nineteenth, for while the sun had already set and darkness was quickly setting in, Wilfred Saunders led off with a single, moved to second on a unassisted groundout to first, stole third on the next pitch and scored on a sacrifice flyout by Charles Lovell. The Burtons went out on three quiet groundouts, punctuated by an infield single, to hang the bitter loss on Peace. A count of pitches yielded the number two hundred and thirty two, yet Peace got right back on the horse five days later and scored a complete game victory of three runs to two over the Glossop Hillmen, this time only nine innings in length.

Walker Back to America The Edward Walker experiment at Middlesbrough has ended on an inauspicious note. Walker has decided to forego another crack at English League ball and go back to America to try his luck in the American majors again Walker was, in a word, terrible. With only seven wins against seventeen defeats and a porous 4.31 ERA, he did not come close to fulfilling the expectations that his background and his talents would have suggested. Walker is also said to have been surprised and disappointed by the wage disparity between the American majors and the League, although it has never been any secret that baseball players make more money, sometimes much more, in America than they do in England. It is rumoured that Walker had some sharp words for Middlesbrough chairman, Sir William Bull, on his way out, and Sir William was none too pleased at the brazen insolence Walker is said to have displayed. We will keep an interested eye on the further exploits of Edward Walker in the United States and report back as events warrant. |

Meaning, am I running a US league on OOTP that I'm pulling guys like Marty Hogan and Edward Walker out of and rotating guys like Alfred Shaw into? No, I'm not. These were real English-born baseball players who really did play in the actual American major leagues in the early days of the game.
