A fairly benign lottery for all concerned:

Number 1 overall this year is a bit of a surprise, with Wilmington opting for pitcher Tully Sparks over the highly-touted Ken Griffey jr, who eventually goes to the Colt .45s with the 5th pick.

A relatively subdued offseason, but still a few key moves and acquisitions are transacted.

One of the more high-profile trades happens right at the end, as Baltimore trades away a couple excellent prospects in Rap Dixon and Guillermo Velasquez to obtain the services of Buck Leonard. Another one of interest is Denver sending Dave Winfield to Mobile for pitcher Deacon Phillippe.

The Knickerbockers continue their high-turnover ways, letting Tris Speaker walk (he eventually signs with Pittsburgh), then signing Bernie Williams. Same with the Terriers, who lose Williams, Bobby Doerr and Frank Chance, replacing them with Brian Giles, Bill Mueller and Jonathan Lucroy.

Here's a summary of the major gains and losses.

The Dice Deities have dragged us a bit closer to the modern era, with 2014 stats in use for 1954.

Here is how the boffins see this season panning out, with the race between my ex-club and arch-rivals Cincy again looking tasty:

Indy's Heavy Johnson remains the league's top-rated prospect. Gary Sheffield, who has entered the league as a FA but garnered little interest until Decatur signed him on an MiLB option deal, is at #4, "Junior" Griffey at #6.

There's no doubt the way I like to build a squad - high versatility with players used in multiple roles - only works when you can source the right mix. I never managed to do so with the Whales, thus my relative lack of success there.

You could tell even before the first pitch that Jon Weigle and Bucky Harris had put together a really good group this year. Some of the guys acquired under my stewardship were let go, new ones brought in. Players' roles certainly look less fluid and more clearly defined than they did when I was running things.

It seems to be working. In spades. 11 wins in a row after an OD loss, with the pitching in rare form indeed. Scherzer has struck out 45 in just 22 IP, including a bunch in his latest start against the Pelicans.

Only early days of course, but a most promising start indeed.

Boy there are some terrific teams being built and so many talented players in this league now it's fun to watch (although I admit I'm itching to get back in and run a club - not long now...).

The defending Champs show no sign of slowing down; neither does their young ace, who lives up to his nickname and gives the AtHoL its first no-no of the year against the Beavers, tying the KA record with 19 strikeouts in the process in an utterly dominant outing.

Tough breaking into the AtHoL what with so much talent to go around. This 3BL AAA game alone features familiar names such as Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Elliott Maddox and Vic Harris. But it's clear there's only one who will get the attention here.

The 1950 AtHoL Champion Knickerbockers have got their hands full trying to keep pace with the defending Champion Terrapins, who are looking strong again this year. But the KBs have a good squad and should be thereabouts come stretch time.

One of their key guys has a fun night against the Peppers.

First and foremost among which, Raleigh's Bump Hadley no-hits the Aviators, fanning 15 in the process.

While he was doing that, Louisville's David Wright - who is putting together some sort of season so far - destroys the Wilmington pitchers with a 3 HR game.

Montgomery look headed in the right direction, currently holding a narrow lead in the KA Rickey. They've made some key moves of late as well, trading for catcher Mickey Tettleton and locking down Chipper Jones on a 3/432 deal. Along with Frank Robinson, these guys are giving the bombers plenty of pop as Chipper shows here with this fine performance against Boston in a losing cause.

Plenty to play for as we enter the rivalry section of the season, with Cincy's 8-game break in the LA Flood the widest. Perhaps intensifying the races to win the Bands outright is the fact that the WC races are slightly less frenetic than is usually the case. Still, with all of these remaining games played between those directly fighting for the same spot, so much can happen.

New York's Bernie Williams has a real shot at the KA Triple Crown.

The battle for supremacy in the LA Cleland remains fierce, with the defending champs still a couple adrift of Louisville. Mel Ott steps up big time here to get them a vital victory.

The Wichita Falls Spudders are again the dominant regular-season team with 95 wins, but they can't pull off the repeat as the Clarksville Colts take them down 4-1 in the 2B AA World Series, with Jose Herrera named MVP.

Fulton's Ownie Carroll wins the Baldwin Conference pitching Triple Crown.

An utterly dominant playoff run by the Lufkin Lumbermen, who win 10 straight including a sweep of Port City in the World Series to easily claim their first 3BL AAA Championship. Mookie Wilson is named series MVP.

Only the LA Adams goes down to the wire and what a thrill for "placeholder" club Decatur, who only finish 83-83 but hang on to win the Band by a game from Norfolk. Defending champs Baltimore win 110 and once again look the team to beat. The Whales overcome the loss of Max Scherzer with a month of the season left and then the loss of Closer Camilo Pascual a week or so later to see off a determined challenge from Dallas and take the second WC.

Batting titles to Wichita's Cap Anson (361) and Tris Speaker of Pittsburgh (344). Montreal's Joe Kelly leads the way with 49 HR, while in the end the only TC cat Bernie Williams leads is RBI, with 139.

While Baltimore's Tom Seaver nails down the most wins (25) and lowest ERA in the KA, he comes nowhere near the strikeout title, as Denver rookie Steel Arm Tyler sets an astonishing new AtHoL record with 520. Tyler also posts the best pWAR total in AtHoL history with 13.48. James Paxton of St. Louis also has an outstanding season, with the league's lowest ERA at 2.08 and several new pitching records to his name including a WHIP of 0.88. Sadly it ends on a sour note as he is injured late and is only a remote chance of appearing in the playoffs.

Defending champs Baltimore win 110 and once again look the team to beat. The Whales overcome the loss of Max Scherzer with a month of the season left and then the loss of Closer Camilo Pascual a week or so later to see off a determined challenge from Dallas and take the second WC. Batting titles to Wichita's Cap Anson (361) and Tris Speaker of Pittsburgh (344). Montreal's Joe Kelly leads the way with 49 HR, while in the end the only TC cat Bernie Williams leads is RBI, with 139. While Baltimore's Tom Seaver nails down the most wins (25) and lowest ERA in the KA, he comes nowhere near the strikeout title, as Denver rookie Steel Arm Tyler sets an astonishing new AtHoL record with 520. Tyler also posts the best pWAR total in AtHoL history with 13.48. James Paxton of St. Louis also has an outstanding season, with the league's lowest ERA at 2.08 and several new pitching records to his name including a WHIP of 0.88. Sadly it ends on a sour note as he is injured late and is only a remote chance of appearing in the playoffs.
