BNN Report News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL by Nat Wright-Kawolski 1 August 2319 The August 1 Super Post CBO Top Performances Hitter - Needham Tickler's Opening Day performance is no longer #1. That distinction now belongs to the July 3 performance by Southie's Clean Blake Dean in the Brews' 17-3 shellacking of Vault 81. Dean was 5 for 5 with a double, two home runs, five runs scored, and eight RBI, earning him a game score of 141. His five runs scored tied the SCA record, which interestingly was also tied by FHE's Phil Brodie the day before. Pitcher - Well, here is a rarity. Five pitchers earned a game score of 85, all tied for the best performance in July. The accomplishment in order with base stats: July 3 - Leyden Aigg, Concord - 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 11 K July 8 - Mister Burns, Nordhagen Beach - 8.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 8 K July 14 - Macho Lopez, Diamond City - 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 9 K July 25 - Scooter Yaghmour, Cambridge - 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 K July 31 - Kevin Gauzeman, Concord - 8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 12 K CBO Players of the Month NCA Hitter - Johnboy Zikmund, the Sunshine Tidings second baseman, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .354 batting average with 29 hits, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 24 times. That kind of hitting earned him the North Charles Association Batter of the Month honors for July. Thus far this year, Zikmund has hit .316 with 23 home runs and 76 RBIs. SCA Hitter - Enigma Montgomery battered South Charles Association pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around Commonwealth Baseball Organization long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Montgomery told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 23 games, Montgomery hit .369 with 5 home runs, 20 RBIs and scored 26 runs. For the year, Montgomery is hitting .329 with 16 home runs. His stats include 53 runs batted in and 94 runs scored. NCA Pitcher - The Pitcher of the Month Award in July has been selected and the North Charles Association honor went to Starlight hurler, Mercury Morris. For his excellent performance he has been named the league's top pitcher. During the month, Morris was superb with a 1.64 ERA and 5 wins and 1 loss. In 44 innings he struck out 41 and gave up 31 hits and 4 walks. So far this season, Morris has a record of 12-7 with 140 strikeouts and 25 walks in 189.1 innings and a 3.28 ERA. SCA Pitcher - A standout performance in July earned Meribrand Docybuck the Pitcher of the Month Award in the South Charles Association. When his name was penciled in to start by the Spectacle Island skipper, it meant trouble for opposing teams. For the month the Reapers star racked up 5 wins and no losses. In 44 innings of work, Docybuck limited opposing batters to 33 base hits and a .209 batting average. He notched 36 strikeouts, issued 12 walks and had a 2.25 ERA. This year, Docybuck has made 26 starts, thrown 169.1 innings, fanned 158 batters and walked 48. His won-lost record is 13-7 with a 3.88 ERA. NCA Rookie - Marl Moriarty earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the North Charles Association for last month's performance. The boyish Bunker Hill first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Moriarty hit .311 with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 23 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. Moriarty is currently hitting at a .323 pace with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs. He has played in 69 games and scored 55 times. SCA Rookie - When it came to hitting the baseball, Bix Bimbleman had few peers in the South Charles Association last month. The gifted right fielder for Roxbury tagged opposing pitchers for a .364 average and was voted the Rookie of the Month for July. Included in his stats were 32 hits, 4 homers, 17 runs scored and 14 RBIs. This year, Bimbleman has collected a .350 batting average to date with 126 hits in 360 at-bats, 61 RBIs, 17 home runs and scored 62 times. He has played in 97 games. NEBL Analysis There are only five more games in the NEBL regular season. Only one division, the Old Glory, has been wrapped up. Another could be as early as tomorrow night. In the PL Stars, Brockton is that team with a chance to end the division race early, currently up three games on the Manchester Mammoths. In the PL Stripes, three teams are still alive, with the Fairfield Greasers possessing a two-game lead over Greenwich and a three-game lead over New Haven. The Lowell Sentry Bots have clinched the YL Old Glory and the top record in the Yankee League. In the YL USA, Hamden has a one-game lead over the Bridgeport Gulchers. NEBL Players of the Month PL Hitter - When Jokie Josey stepped up to the plate in July he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the Patriot League Batter of the Month award. The young Newton center fielder posted a .388 batting average with 5 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 22 runs. Josey also worked pitchers for 6 walks to post a .434 on-base percentage. So far this season, Josey is batting .417 with 10 home runs. YL Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to New England Baseball League, Sawmill Sarabia put up some good numbers in July and earned the YL Batter of the Month award. He was one of Hamden's offensive leaders with a .371 average in 28 games. He also racked up 8 home runs, 19 RBIs, and 25 runs scored. So far on the season, Sarabia is hitting .333 with 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He has 46 hits and played in 66 games. PL Pitcher - In July, Bunter Mayberry tore through the Patriot League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 23 years old. The young New Haven starter posted a 4-1 mark and an ERA of 1.57 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 40 innings he collected 25 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .217 average. To date this year, Mayberry shows a 5-3 record, 14 starts, 85 innings, 70 strikeouts and a 2.12 ERA. YL Pitcher - Francisco Araiza really put his best foot forward in July with 5 wins and no losses and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month honors in the Yankee League. When he got the start for the Hamden Lifegivers, it was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition. In 34.1 innings of work, Araiza limited opposing batters to 29 base hits and a .234 batting average. He notched 30 strikeouts, issued 11 walks and had a 1.57 ERA. To date this year, Araiza has compiled a 8-1 mark with a 2.66 ERA in 18 starts. MML Analysis Like the NEBL, the MML is down to its last five games per team. Unlike the MML, only one division is not decided, but that could happen today. teams clinching division championships are the Everett Mutant Hounds in the LL Boggs, the Brookline bandoliers in the LL Murtagh, and the Middletown Sextants in the SL Yastrzemski. In the SL Williams, the East providence Townies have a four-game lead over the Attleboro Mongrels. MML Players of the Month LL Hitter - Aaron Annis of the Methuen Spy Hunters has won the Legends League Batter of the Month award, and it's no surprise. It was difficult to keep the 27-year-old off the bases in July, as he batted .350, hit 6 home runs, drove in 16 runs, scored 18 times and compiled a .419 on-base percentage. Annis on the season is batting .318 with 20 home runs. His totals include 60 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He has played in 90 games. SL Hitter - Saint Orleans used that sweet swing with great success for Milford last month, garnering him the Stars League Batter of the Month award. The 27-year-old right fielder put up a .341 batting average and collected 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and 21 runs scored. This year, Orleans has hit at a .286 clip with 75 hits, 16 home runs, 42 RBIs and 49 runs scored. LL Pitcher - When Cuff Collins takes the hill, there's a good chance for a Waltham victory. At least that's the way it was in May. He excelled with a 4-1 mark and a 1.37 ERA in 6 starts, tossed 39.1 innings, fanned 30, and held enemy hitters to a .227 average. That's why the Wanderers star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Legends League. Collins has gone 6-2 this season with an ERA of 2.49 and 68 strikeouts in 90.1 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .263 against him. SL Pitcher - It was a sensational July for Fergus Parker as he mystified, mesmerized and terrorized opposing batters to capture the Stars League Pitcher of the Month trophy. Parker locked down a 4-0 mark in 6 starts last month, striking out 35 while walking 9 in 40.1 innings and posting a 2.68 ERA. On the year, Parker has compiled a 7-2 mark with a 3.94 ERA. BMU Playoffs The BMU playoffs are down to the final two teams: the Melrose Eyebots (Qui) and Foxborough Minutemen (Good). In the Association Finals, the Eyebots defeated the Brunswick Brainiacs (ST), 4 games to 2. The Minutemen downed the Meriden Attack Dogs (Cam) in five games, 4 games to 1. Right now, Melrose has a 2-0 series lead, winning Game 1, 8-0, and Game 2, 5-2. SP Pin Luu, a second-round pick in 2315, threw a complete-game shutout in Game 1. BMU Players of the Month CA Hitter - Not known for his offensive prowess, Beast Reid set the league afire in July and took home the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month award. The Melrose shortstop posted a steady .367 batting average, 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 7 runs. At present, Reid is batting .226 and has collected 13 home runs, 35 RBIs, .308 OBP and scored 35 runs. MA Hitter - Meriden Attack Dogs fans believe they've got a talented young star in Striker Priester. He did nothing to dissuade that notion in July, as he hit .364 with 5 home runs, 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored. The end result was the right fielder being named the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month. Priester has collected 46 hits for the Attack Dogs this year, 9 of them home runs. He has also netted 30 RBIs and scored 23 runs while batting .315. CA Pitcher - Nash Stylvian left little doubt in the minds of Commonwealth Association officials that he should be named July's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance. "I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Stylvian. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down." The 22-year-old tossed 19.2 innings of quality baseball -- going 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA and 15 strikeouts. This year, Stylvian has registered 4 wins and 4 losses in 15 starts with a 2.38 ERA while registering 75 strikeouts and 37 walks in 87 innings. MA Pitcher - Ray Darkseid of Foxborough had an excellent July with a 3-0 record and was selected as the Pitcher of the Month in the Massachusetts Association. He finished the month with a 3.09 ERA while piling up 15 strikeouts in 23.1 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .205 batting average. GBRL Playoffs The GBRL is now in the Greater Boston Series with two of the four playoff teams remaining: the Graygarden Action Boys (Atom) and the Mayoral Shelter Tricentennials (BH). In the Heroes League Championship Series, the Boys downed the Sandy Coves Freaks (), 4 games to 3. The Tricentennials edged the Somerville Place jets (), 4 games to 3 in the Saviors League Championship Series. In the Greater Boston Series, the teams are tied at one win apiece. Mayoral Shelter took Game 1, 8-2, behind the bat of Phillip Rafferty, who scored twice and drove in two runs. In Game 2, the Action Boys fought back, winning it 4-3. SP Lorne French received Player of the Game honors after allowing just two earned runs in 6.0 innings. GBRL Players of the Month HL Hitter - Quintin Spicer has a lot going for him. The Augusta shortstop just broke into the majors this year and now the Heroes League has just picked him as its top hitter for July. In 13 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .380 with 3 home runs, 18 RBIs and 12 runs scored. So far this season, Spicer has gotten 47 hits in 129 at-bats for a .364 batting average with 5 home runs. His stats include 37 RBIs and 28 runs scored. He has played in 34 games. SL Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 18 Cam Hall has a lot of baseball ahead of him. But for now the young Stamford Cappies star can enjoy the numbers he put up in July, which have garnered him the nod as the Saviors League Batter of the Month. His breakout month featured a .466 average with 6 home runs, 18 RBIs and 19 runs scored. So far in 2319 Hall is batting .350 with 25 home runs, 77 RBIs and 88 runs scored. He has 114 hits in 326 at-bats and a .458 OBP. HL Pitcher - In July Kingsport starter Stop Sign Welsh mystified Heroes League hitters and carried off the Pitcher of the Month honors by chalking up a 3-0 record in 3 starts. The 18-year-old Welsh added 26 strikeouts in 19.2 innings and 6 walks to his season record and compiled a 1.83 ERA. Opposing batters hit .229 against him. This season, Welsh has registered 4 wins and 3 losses in 18 starts with a 4.31 ERA. SL Pitcher - Kirwin Farley really tore up the Saviors League this past month. He went 3-0 in July and won the Pitcher of the Month award. In 5 starts he struck out 26 in 33.2 innings with a 3.48 ERA. This year, Farley has compiled a 9-2 mark with a 3.36 ERA.
