August Good News/Bad News
There's been good news and bad news as we grind through August.
In good news, we've opened up a 16 game lead in the AL West while California has floundered. In bad news, a very healthy season has turned for the worse. First, Kirby Puckett, who was called in at the end of July to replace Oddibe McDowell in center field, got injured on a defensive play in center field. The diagnosis is a herniated disc and he'll be missed for about 4 weeks. Puckett had filled the 2-hole admirably, hitting .328 with 14 RBI's in 28 games. McDowell was called back up from AAA to take back the CF spot. So far, he's responded in going 3/7 with a double, triple, and scoring 3 runs in 2 games. Then, starting 3B Tim Wallach was hit by an Alan Fowlkes pitch and will go on the 15-day DL with a bruised elbow. Wallach was filling the cleanup spot admirably, hitting .286 with 73 RBI's and hitting a team leading 25 homers. Kelly Paris will be recalled from AAA to take Wallach's spot. |

1985 August Standings
Here's a summary as we head into the home stretch
AL East Cleveland put up a torrid August going 22-7. That record coupled with a 14-15 effort from Milwaukee has catapulted the Indians into a 9 game lead! AL West My Mariners had a middling 16-12 August after losing 4 of 6 to end the month. However, we were able to increase our lead from 11 to 16 games thanks to California tanking with an 11-18 month and Oakland matching us going 16-13. NL East St. Louis has opened up a small lead on the Mets and it appears to be a dog fight between the two of them for the East crown. NL West San Diego made a run and took over West lead but then dropped right back to where they were at the beginning of the month. We'll see if Cincinnati has enough to hold on for the West. |

I'm not sure they had such tests back in 1985 or not ... perhaps? Nevertheless, he's having a monster year! The only thing that may stop his Triple Crown bid is if my Paul Molitor gets hot and he goes cold because I don't see anyone passing him in HR's and RBI's. If not, he might earn the Triple Crown for the entire Major League, not just the AL!

MajorMet, here's a summary of Upshaw's time in my universe.
He was a 2nd round pick by Milwaukee after the 1977 season. After 3 years on a club friendly salary, Willie got a bump to $220K for the '82 season and even higher to $370K for '83. Then, prior to the '84 season he signed a mammoth 6-year, $6.8M contract to stay in Milwaukee. While Upshaw has held up his end of the bargain, since the big contract the team hasn't done better than 3rd until this year where they're in 2nd behind the Cleveland Indians. Unfortunately, the Brewers are 9 games back with 25 games to play. They actually made the playoffs 3 straight years before the contract. 1985 - AL West Status
It's the Ides of September and my Mariners are sitting on a 19 game lead over Oakland and California with 20 games to go - so that means our Magic Number was 2 entering today's game. So, we could clinch the West with a win and a loss by both Oakland and California! All we had to do was get past the White Sox at home in the Kingdome.
Burt Hooton (14-11) went to the long and pitched well but left in the 7th after giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. Meanwhile, we had only managed a single run when Oddibe McDowell hit a solo homer (12) in the 6th. The bullpen let in another Chicago run after Hooton left in the 7th and we entered the bottom of the 8th down 4-1. Meanwhile, we got good news out of Anaheim where we heard that the Rangers beat the Angels 7-1 and saw that the Royals were ahead of the A's 6-2 in the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 8th, Dale Murphy led off with a walk and Dave Stapleton singled so we were off to a good start. Then Oddibe McDowell tripled off the center field wall to plate 2 and give us a chance! After a Molitor strikeout, McDowell scored the tying run on a Mike Parrott! But, we weren't done yet. Greg Walker worked a walk and was replaced with pinch runner Kelly Paris. Tim Wallach promptly into the left field corner giving us the lead 5-4. Unfortunately, Wallach pulled up lame at 2nd with a pulled groin muscle. We promptly loaded the bases but Dale Murphy struck out to end the 8th. In Oakland, the Royals still led the A's 6-2 going into the top of the 9th. It was up to closer Tom Gorman to close out the game for Seattle. Gorman was throwing smoke striking out George Bjorkman and Jesse Barfield. Then, singles by Jack Perconte and Luis Salazar and a walk to Rickey Henderson loaded the bases for Rob Deer. Gorman struck him out on 4 pitches for his 32nd save and a win for Seattle. The team went to the mound to congratulate him and then they joined the crowd to see how the game ended up in Oakland. What everyone saw was the Royal put up 7 runs in the top of the 9th to raise the score to 13-2. There were 45 thousand plus still in the Kingdome when the Kansas City's Bill Dawley struck out Mitchell Page to end the game Seattle clinched the AL West with 3 weeks to go in the season! This was our 2nd AL West title in a row and 4th in the last 5 years! We've built a juggernaut in our 9th year in the Major Leagues! We'll take these next 3 weeks to get some players rested up ready to hit the playoffs running. All signs are pointing to Cleveland as they currently sit with a 10 game lead over Milwaukee in the AL East. Meanwhile in the National League, The Mets hold a 4 game lead over the Cardinals in the East while the Reds are holding on to a 4 game lead over the surging Braves. |

1985 - Indians Clinch AL East!
Having already heard that the Yankees lost 4-2 to Baltimore, it took the Cleveland Indians 14 innings to beat California and clinch the AL East. With one out, Ron Oester hit a first pitch fastball over the left field fence for a 2-run homer to give the Indians a 4-2 lead over the Angels. The homer was Oester's 2nd of the season but it was a big one as Scott Holman finished the Angels in the bottom of the 14th to record his 3rd save and secure the AL East crown for Cleveland! Only the die-hard fans were up back home celebrating as this game ended late on the West Coast. This will be Cleveland's first playoff appearance since 1954!
This sets the AL playoffs as the Indians will face the Mariners for the AL crown. Cleveland holds a 2-game lead over Seattle with 12 games to go to see who will be the home team for the series. So far this season, Seattle holds a 6-4 lead over Cleveland in head-to-head play though the teams will meet for 2 more games in the last week of the season. An incredibly long dynasty. Hats off to you. Have enjoyed following. I just started my second dynasty, as it's been awhile. Promised myself I would "stick" with this one a bit longer, and seeing dynasties like yours, I know it can be done!

Thanks but remember that I had a 6+ year gap in doing this. I'm happy that I've gotten back to it as it's been really fun!

1985 - Who's the GM here?!?
I'm nearing the end of the 1985 regular season and I got an email from pending free agent shortstop Dave Stapleton that he was looking forward to re-signing and he made his demands known. Well, he was asking for an 8-year, $7.6M contract (remember, it's 1985 here so the numbers are modest by today's standards). Stapleton has been very productive from the 9-hole, hitting .290 while averaging 13 HR's and 83 RBI's over the past 5 years. That said, I don't know that I'm going to give a 31 year old an 8 year contract. I then checked and Tim Wallach (3B), who's also a pending free agent, was asking for a 10-year, $13M contract. Wallach (28 years old) is having a career year with 30 homers as we hit the end of the season.
I had looked into this earlier this season and their requests were more modest, 4-5 years at around $500K per season. Who the hell is the GM here and let this balloon?!? Dammit, that was me. I'm going to have some major decisions to make if they don't accept shorter duration offers. This may be the end of this dynasty and the start of a new re-build. The only salve to this wound is that they will definitely be Type A Free Agents and I'll get decent compensation if I lose them. |

1985 - NL East Champs
Tony Fernandez was on a tear through the end of July when he landed on the DL for 5 weeks with a strained MCL. But, he's hit the ground running since he came back to the starting lineup on September 1st. Today in the top of the 7th, he took a first pitch fastball from Pittsburgh's Bob Sebra (11-8) over the right field fence for a 3-run homer (12) to give the New York Mets a 4-0 lead. Despite giving up a run in the bottom of the 7th, the Mets held on for a 4-1 win to clinch the National League East crown with 7 games remaining in the regular season. New York's Jack O'Connor (13-12) pitched 6 innings for the win while closer Mark Lee pitched the 9th for his 33rd save.
The only playoff spot undecided is the NL West. Currently, the Cincinnati Reds hold a 5 game lead over the San Diego Padres with 8 games to go. The Reds' magic number is 4. |

1985 - Key Injury
09/29/1985 - The Cleveland Indians were dealt a severe blow when Andres Galarraga was hurt running the bases recently in a game against the California Angels. After the game, the team trainer reported Galarraga might have to spend a lengthy time on the disabled list. Today doctors confirmed it, ruling the 24-year-old first baseman out for the rest of the season with a strained abdominal muscle. They indicated it would take Galarraga at least 4 weeks to heal.
This year Galarraga is hitting at a .299 pace with 23 home runs and 98 RBIs. He has played in 130 games and scored 77 times. This is a huge blow to Cleveland who appear to have lost their star first baseman (and potential Rookie of the Year) for the playoffs against Seattle. Galarraga was leading Cleveland in RBI's while second on the team in both batting average and home runs. The odds just changed for the ALCS! |

1985 - September Standings
Here's how things are shaking out as we enter the last week of the season!
AL East - Cleveland cinched the AL East going 15-9 in September. AL West - Seattle clinched the AL West going 17-9 in September while California (14-13) and Oakland (11-16) foundered. NL East - The Mets clinched the NL East going 21-6 this month - a wonderful record. They were helped by the Cardinals abysmal 10-17 month. NL West - Cincinnati has a magic number of 2 over San Diego as we enter October. The Reds were 16-10 in October but so far seem to be fighting off Atlanta (17-10) and San Diego (16-10). While it looks dire, the Padres do have 2 head to head games remaining against the Reds. |

1985 - NL West Champs
Cincinnati got their magic number down to 1 but had to face San Diego's Cy Young candidate Rick Reuschel (22-6) but they pounced on him to the tune of 7 runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings on their way to10-3 win and an NL West championship! The offense was paced by Jerry Remy (3/5, 3 Runs, 2 RBI's), Rick Peters (2/3, 4 RBI's) and 2 hits apiece from Howard Johnson, Larry Parrish, Mickey Tettleton, Dan Driessen, and Lee Mazzili. Mike Norris (8-12) pitched 7 strong innings for the win. The Reds will face the New York Mets for the NL crown.
This gives Cincinnati their 4th crown in the past 6 years and they won the World Series in '80 and '83. |
