IBF/WBO JWW unification

Recent WBO champ, Ray Mancini, decided to come to Puerto Rico to face new IBF champ, Subriel Matias.

Even though Subriel is 31 years younger than Ray, Ray's people decided it was worth the risk & to jump on the young champ before he became too experienced. That strategy worked out well for Ray as he dominated & dropped Subriel 4 times & ended the fight with an uppercut @ 1:50 of the 12th.

Subriel won the belt with a 14 DQ of Chris Algieri.

Ray dominated on the cards: 107-99 all 3 judges & PL: 363 (34%) to 149 (16%).

Ray's now 15-2-1.

Making his 3rd defense (2nd reign as a champ), Japan's Takashi Uchiyama's power gradually wore down Panama's, Jaime Arboleda & at 1:12 of the 12th, the ref stepped in to stop the fight due to severe eye swelling of Jaime's right eye. TU also sent Jaime to the deck twice during the fight.

Takashi was in total control, the cards read 108-98 & 107-99 twice for the tough Japanese champ who's now 13-1 with 12 KO's. 322 (26%) to 149 (26%) also favored the champ in PL.

The 12th round stoppage is the 2nd time he's stopped someone in the 12th.

He also has 1 KO in the 13th & 4 stoppages in the 15th (2 TKO's & 2 KO's)

Even though I used his original rating, it's like the game knew James Kirkland is past his prime as it took an 8th round left cross KO for James to beat a 0 rated fighter. James trailed on 2 of the cards: 67-67, 65-68 & 65-69.

James is now 19-1 with 15 KO's, his lone lost years ago when Manny stopped him in the 8th in his only title shot to date.

Making his 2nd defense, Luke Campbell faced hot but untested American prospect - Devin Haney.

For the 1st 7 rounds it appeared being in London & on the big stage might be too much for Devin as Luke was in control due to more activity & harder punches. But in the 8th it looked like Devin found his footing & just outboxed the British champ going down the stretch & won a 15 UD: 144-141, 146-139 & 145-141.

DH also won the PL battle: 355 (36%) to 301 (24%).

Underestimating your opponent is always a dangerous thing, especially if you're a world champ.

UK's Luther Clay talked a lot about what a lucky hick Billy Collins Jr. was to be getting a title shot & Clay ended up paying for all his lip as he absorbed a 15 round beating - Clay was dropped 4 times & lost on the cards: 150-132, 150-133 & 148-134.

These were 2 evenly matched fighters but Clay came in soft mistakenly thinking the Tennessee import would be an easy touch. Billy fought like the old song - Coward of the County, 20 years of crawling was bottled up inside him!

Billy PL: 453 (26%) to 234 (37%).

End of the line for K-9?

K-9 Bundrage was finally able to get back into the ring to defend his WBO JMW belt for the 4th time taking on Patrick Texteria in Brazil.

There were no knockdowns but this came close to a St. Valentine's Day massacre as the much younger (by 17 years) Patrick basically couldn't miss - landing a whopping 66% of his punches - 326 to 139 (21%) for K-9.

Years ago Patrick came up short in another title bid against Sechew Powell losing by decision but not tonight down in Brazil in front of his crazed fans! In the 10th Pat came out determined to end matters & the ref stepped in @ 2:15 to save K-9 from further punishment.

Cards read 86-85 & 88-83 twice for the new champ.

After surprising Peter Quillin to take the belt last year by MD, Peter Manfredo decided to make his 1st defense in Germany (for the good $) against Nuhu Lawal - out of Nigeria.

Peter looked sharp as ever dropping Nuhu 4 times over the fight until the ref stepped in to save Nuhu @ 2:57 of the 10th.

Peter was up 268 (30%) to 162 (22%) & on the cards 87-81 & 88-80 twice.

He improves to 15-2 with 9 KO's & plans to return in May.

Former WBA JLW champ - Argenis Mendez, was given a crack at another 130 pound crown & to fight for the vacant WBO strap in his home country.

His opponent is a newcomer to the division, Leo Santa Cruz (a recent Ice Tea creation).

Mendez came into the fight 9-1-1, his lone loss to Evgeny Chuprakov by 15SD when he lost his WBA title after making 3 title defenses.

In a 1 sided rout, Leo out landed AM 145 to 32, dropped him with a combo in the 4th for a 3 count & then iced him with an uppercut to take the belt at 2:53 of the 4th.

Easy money!

WBC SMW champ, Anthony Dirrell came to New Zealand for his 6th title defense against the mysterious & unknown local - Mose Auimatagi, Jr.

The Kiwi lasted all of 39 seconds as a hook from Dirrell ended the fight, so AD hopped back on a plane & cashed in another check to move to 20-1 with 18 KO's.

JMW title eliminator

In a fight between 2 boxers trying to get another title shot, Tony Harrison came Down Under to battle Dennis Hogan.

Tony showed he might have something left in the tank after all, 10 rounds into the fight it looked like TH was going to cruise to a win by decision but in the 11th really stepped on the gas & went for broke finally forcing the ref to step in @ 2:38 of the round by landing 31 unanswered punches.

Tony was up on the cards 98-92 & 97-93 twice as well as PL: 332 (33%) to 177 (31%).

TH is now 12-3 (10 KO's), Hogan 4-3 (1 KO).

Youth vs. Experience

And this time experience won as Matthew Macklin gradually wore down the upstart Denzel Bentley & knocked him out with a right cross at 0:55 of the 12th.

Denzel hit the deck 2 other times (left hook, rib shot) earlier in the fight.

MM was up on the cards: 107-100 & 106-101 twice & PL 277 (29%) to 203 (40%).

This was MM's 5th defense of his WBA MW title & is now 30-2-1 with 23 KO's.

K-9 vs. Cornflake

Former WBO JMW champ, K-9 Bundrage in a return bout after the brutal beating he took from Patrick Texteria looked old & slow against the much taller & younger Thomas LaManna.

But the old vet bided his time & in the 8th dropped Cornflake twice. Then in the 9th, K-9 dropped the game younger fighter 3 more times before the ref stepped in to stop the fight on the 3rd KD per USBA rules.

With the win K-9 is now 23-3 with 20 KO's.

WBO champ Grzegorz Proksa finally got his chance vs. a big name opponent when Erislandy Lara moved up 6 pounds to face the Polish champ making his 4th title defense. In a fight where it appeared the talented Cuban was going to be too much for him, Proksa pulled out the fight late with a 14th round combo KO @ 2:08 of the round.

Lara was up 126-121 & 124-123 twice on the cards but the hard punching Pole pulled the fight out late - the 3rd time he's defended his belt with a stoppage in the 13th round or later.

Lara was up 282 (34%) to 210 (16%) in PL.

British sensation, Joe Laws, came into the ring to "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest & brought the crowd to their feet.

Too bad Joe's title shot didn't last much longer than the song as Puerto Rico's Nicklaus Flaz knocked Joe out with a right cross @ 1:57 of round 2 to a stunned & now silent English crowd.

Flaz won the title earlier this year & was making his 1st title defense.

After his failed attempt to take the WBC JMW title last year (12th TKO loss to Antonio Margarito) Eddie Hearn convinced Kell Brook to drop back down to 147 for a big $ fight against the WBO champ - Danny Garcia.

Brook is 25-0 with 14 KO's @ WW & is the former IBF champ. Danny, 10-0 with 7 KO's @ 147 & was making his 1st defense after a controversial SD over Devon Alexander.

Danny thought coming back down would be too much for Kell & also wanted to stop him sooner than Antonio had late last year.

Turned out Danny was almost stopped when he got dropped in the 1st. Garcia's power & skill kept him from getting blown out in 1 round & returned the favor in the 5th dropping the Brit. He hoped to turn the tide but Brook showed a champion's heart as well & dropped Danny 2 more times on his way to a 15UD - (143-139, 144-138, 143-138).

The huge win puts Kell in a great position to make another run at a JMW title.

Danny said he may have both undertrained & underestimated Kell & also wondered if he juiced?

AM now 21-3 with 19 KO's.

Tony's title fights @ 154:

Won WBC belt with 2nd round TKO - 2:30 of Erislandy Lara for the vacant belt.

2nd defense - 5th round TKO (2:34) of Patrick Allotey

WBC JWW title

Making his 6th defense, it appeared Julius Indongo was on cruise control against Jose Ramirez. He'd dropped Jose twice with left crosses for counts of 6 (in the 3rd & 4th rounds) but when the announcement of a SD came, there was stunned silence in Namibia as Jose pulled out the decision 140-143 & 142-141 twice.

Even despite being dropped twice & losing the PL count too: 304 (30%) to 337 (23%), somehow Jose won the title & is now 5-0 with 3 KO's.

Indongo is now 10-2 with 6 KO's.

Yes I agree! Most of the time I have a pretty good feel for how the decision will go but last year had a similar result where Devon Alexander appeared to do enough to defend his WW title against Danny Garcia but the judges felt otherwise.

Decisions like that make the game more realistic - just like real boxing which is part of the fun!

Making his 4th defense of his 2nd reign as IBO champ, Takashi Uchiyama came to Namibia to face the untested Jeremiah Nakathia.

JN didn't take long to show the tough champ he wasn't here just to collect a payday as he dropped Uchiyama with a hard combo in the 1st.

Over the next 14 rounds, Jeremiah used his big right hand to drop the champ 4 more times with right crosses - including a final one right before the final bell in the 15th!

JN won on the cards: 147-136, 144-137 & 145-136 & in PL 411 (37%) to 200 (13%) to stun the long time champ, possibly ending his career?

Uchiyama is now 13-2 with 12 KO's.
