1985 - Regular Season Ends!
The regular season has ended and the playoffs have been set. While Milwaukee faltered in the end, you can't blame it on Willie Upshaw. The Brewers first baseman captured the AL Triple Crown hitting .337 with 56 HR's and 151 RBI's! He also led the AL cracking 216 hits and scoring 128 runs while posting a .415 OB%, .658 Slugging %, a 1.073 OPS with a WAR of 10.1. His closest competition was 9 points behind in average (Paul Molitor, SEA), 11 HR's behind (Jose Canseco, TOR), and 26 RBI's back (Jose Canseco, TOR). It was truly a season without peer!
Meanwhile, my 1st round pick Dan Pasqua joined the team on August 1 and hit .294 with 18 HR's and 46 RBI's in 59 games. When you add that to his AAA totals, he accounted for 64 HR's and 165 RBI's while hitting .317/.407/1.078 over 160 games in AAA and the Majors. Hopefully, he'll give Upshaw some competition over a full season next year. |

The Mariners will have home field advantage thanks to their 7-5 record against the Indians. The Mariners sport one of the top offenses in the league, leading the AL in Runs, Batting Avg. and OB% while second in HR's. The Indians offense was right behind in runs but had 60 fewer HR's than the Mariners. Both teams sport strong starting rotations but the Indians sported the top bullpen in the AL which featured closer Mark Littell (5-3, 1.29 ERA, 47 Saves, 98 K's in 77 IP). The Indians will be without rookie sensation Andres Galarraga (.299, 23 HR's, 98 RBI's) who was lost at the end of September with an abdominal strain.

1985 - ALCS - Game 1
Game 1 sees the Indians sending Mark Gubicza (15-15, 3.70) against Seattle’s Bill Gullickson (21-3, 2.75). Cleveland got on the board first when Ken Griffey hit the first pitch he saw from Gullickson over the center field wall for a home run in the 2nd inning. The Indians had one of the lowest HR totals in the AL this season but they started the game playing some long ball. Cleveland continued to beat Seattle at their own game when Ron Gardenhire hit a 2-run homer in the 5th innint to give the Indians a 3-0 lead. Gardenhire was called up to the majors to take Andres Galarraga’s spot when he got injured. This was Gardenhire’s 2nd career Major League homer and it came in a big spot! Seattle didn’t get their first hit until Paul Molitor smashed a single into left field in the bottom of the 6th but the Mariners couldn’t make anything out of it. Cleveland chased Bill Gullickson got chased in the top of the 7th after a lead-off walk. Buddy Schultz was brought in to face a series of lefties but he got touched by a double and a single allowing 2 more runs to give Cleveland a 5-0 lead. Cleveland added an insurance run in the 9th to take a 6-0 lead but it was unneeded as Seattle was shutdown in the 9th to preserve a 6-0 win for Cleveland and they took a 1-0 lead in the ALCS. There were any number of heroes for Cleveland but Mark Gubicza (1-0) took the player of the game award pitching 8.2 innings of 2-hit ball, striking out 6 while walking 4. On the offensive side, Ron Gardenhire was 2/3 with a walk, 2 RBI’s, and 2 runs scored after having only 7 at-bats in the Majors this year. Gene Richards was a candidate going 3 for 4 from the leadoff spot having a single, a double, and triple while scoring 2 runs. Richards always seems to destroy the Mariners. Meanwhile, the Seattle offense was held in check, managing only 2 hits and only getting 2 men to second base – on an error and a passed ball.

1985 - ALCS - Game 2
Cleveland will send Alan Hargesheimer (17-6, 2.77) to the hill against Seattle’s Mike Witt (15-9, 3.99). Seattle started the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd with back-to-back doubles by Oddibe McDowell and Paul Molitor to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Mike Witt was cruising until the 7th when got into a jam in the 7th and loaded the bases with none out. A short fly ball to left field was dropped by Ivan Calderon allowing Geno Petralli to score and tie the game at 1 run apiece. But Cleveland scored 2 more –sac flies be Ken Griffey and Ron Oester to give Cleveland a 3-1 lead going into the 7th inning stretch. Seattle cut into the lead scoring a run in the 7th on a walk and two singles, including the RBI single by Paul Molitor. Cleveland added 3 insurance runs in the top of the 9th to take a 6-2 lead with only 3 outs separating them from victory. Scott Holman put down the Mariners in order to preserve the 6-2 win and Cleveland came into Seattle and swept the Mariners to take a 2-0 lead in the series as we move back to Cleveland! Parker earned the Player of the Game award going 3/5 with a HR and 3 RBI’s, including the game winner.
