With opening day just around the corner, we thought it would be interesting to see how the draft worked out ...

#Love 'Em (Draft Picks Making Opening Day Rosters)

1st Round

Charles "Bullet Joe" Rogan, the overall #1 pick in the draft, makes Philadelphia's opening day roster, expected to be their 4th OF and provide bullpen support. The Stars' other first-rounder, Dave Stieb, made their opening day rotation.

Two outfielders were taken with the 7th and 8th picks, and both should be in their team's opening day lineups, as San Francisco took CF Turkey Stearnes at 7 and Los Angeles RF Ichiro Suzuki at 8.

2nd Round

Miami took Julio Rodríguez with the 2nd pick in round 2 thinking the 19 year old would be a project for the future; instead he breaks camp as their starting CF.

Homestead's Tim Lincecum makes the opening day roster in their bullpen, and Houston's César Cedeño will start the season as their reserve OF (although this is expected to only last until George Brett's return from injury, but you never know).

Portland drafted 26 year old Walter Ball expecting him to be ready for the WBL, and he delivered, starting the season in their rotation.

Some mention should be made of Kansas City's Matt Morris, who was expected to make their rotation before tearing his labrum.

3rd Round

Dobie Moore exploded on the scene for Memphis and should see essentially full time usage alternating between SS and 2B.

Philadelphia breaks camp with Bill Gatewood in the bullpen.

5th Round

The New York Black Yankees didn't expect Noah Syndergaard to make the opening day roster, but he did.

Detroit is even more surprised at the performance and poise from 18 year old Billy Hoeft, who will start the season in their bullpen.

6th Round

Jess Barbour was a throw-in in the Albert Belle/Andy Pettitte trade, but his defensive flexibility and speed kept him around for Birmingham.

8th Round

Ottawa's staff was essentially open going into Spring Training, so while Dupee Shaw making the team was a surprise, it wasn't a shock.

The Black Yankees' bench received a complete overhaul, with Elliot Maddox earning a spot out of the gate.

9th Round

Jack Billingham starts the season in Indianapolis' bullpen.

12th Round

Indianapolis took Edward "The Only" Nolan with their final pick of the draft. Nolan starts the year on their staff as the WBL's version if Mister Irrelevant.

Other than the inexplicable treatment of Chino Smith, this all looks fine. Topsy Hartsel should find a home somewhere, the rest may or may not.

Welcome to the opening day of games in Year 2 of the WBL!

We'll start with last year's victors from the Whirled Series, as the Detroit Wolverines visit the champs, the Baltimore Black Sox, with the Wolverines' Hal Newhouser opening their season against the Black Sox's Dennis Martínez.

New Wolverine Charlie Gehringer opened the scoring with the first homerun of the season, a 3 run shot in the top of the 3rd, and Bob Bailey added an RBI single in the following frame to give Detroit a 4-0 lead.

El Presidente lurched through his 5 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs while Newhouser was far better, allowing only 1 score in his 6 innings. Newhouser did walk 6 Black Sox, so there is some concern there.

Larry Gardner got one back with an RBI single for Baltimore in the bottom of the 5th, and then the Black Sox came all the way back against Chad Bradford in the bottom of the 8th, with singles from Curt Blefary and Ken Singleton driving in the runs to tie the game at 4.

So, opening day brought us extra innings!

Detroit would use a single from Hank Greenberg, a double from Al Kaline, and a sacrifice fly from Oscar Gamble to take a 5-4 lead in the 10th, and Mike Henneman--far from dependable last season--would shut down Baltimore on 5 pitches for his first save of the year and Detroit's first win, 5-4.

The win went to Buddy Napier while Buddy Groom took the loss.

This was a great opening day for Detroit: the newcomers (Gehringer, Billy Hoeft) delivered and Henneman made the end look easy.

#Other Games

Jim Thome delivered a walkoff game winner against Portland's closer, Johan Santana, as Miami came from behind to beat the Sea Dogs, 5-4.

HRs: POR - Hooper (1), Bell (1); MCG - Thome (1).

Homestead rode homeruns from Chris Sabo and Rick Reichardt and three hits from Josh Gibson (along with 3 errors by Philadelphia) in a 13-4 drubbing of the Stars. Francisco Liriano got the win with 5 decent innings and, perhaps more encouragingly, both Grays' rookie arms--Doug Drabek and Tim Lincecum--were strong in relief.

Duke Snider went deep twice and John Briggs and Roy White added 3 hits apiece as Brooklyn gave Don Drysedale plenty of support in an 8-3 win over the New York Gothams. The only concern for the Royal Giants was reliever Dave Von Ohlen's departure in the 9th through injury.

The House of David torched Roy Oswalt for 9 runs (5 earned) in the first 2 innings, and then held on for a 12 to 6 victory over Houston. Pete Browning had 3 hits, Ryne Sandberg drove in 3, and every starter had a hit in support of a mediocre start from Jack Taylor. Tony Gwynn had 3 hits for Houston.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Gavvy Cravath hit 2 homeruns, but it wasn't enough as the Black Sox fell to Detroit, 5-4, in 10 innings.

#Detroit Wolverines

Mike Henneman continued his perfect start with his 2nd save in as many chances as Detroit pulled out a 5-4 win over Baltimore.

The Wolverines ran out of arms early, having to move Juan Beníquez to AAA bring up Claude Passeau for a start. Ty Cobb had 4 hits and 5 RBI's as Detroit came back to grab a 7-5 win over Memphis. Passeau headed back to AAA after, with Beníquez returning.

#Memphis Red Sox

SP Dean Chance headed to the DL with an injured toe, which will cause him to miss at least his first 2 starts on the season. Eddie Cicotte was recalled from AAA New Orleans.

The Red Sox scored 10 runs in the 5th inning of their season opener, keyed by triples from Ted Williams, Bill White, and Wade Boggs, which is as unlikely a trio to hit 3 triples in an inning as you can find. Reggie Smith and Claude Ritchey had 3 hits each as Memphis came from behind to win 12 to 5. David Bush got the win with 4 effective innings in relief of a wild Stubby Overmire.

#New York Black Yankees

Babe Ruth went deep twice and drove in 6 as the Black Yankees came from 4 runs down to top Los Angeles, 9-5.

#Chicago American Giants

Kevin Mitchell began a rehab assignment at AAA, and was almost immediately recalled after Duffy Lewis hit the 10-Day DL with blurred vision.

Dick Allen had 4 hits including a walkoff 2 run homerun to lead the American Giants to an 8-7 come from behind victory over Portland.

#Los Angeles Angels

Bobby Grich hit his first 2 homeruns of the season in an 11-5 loss to San Francisco.

#Miami Cuban Giants

The Cuban Giants did it again, using Julio Rodríguez' second homerun of the game for their second walkoff victory to start the season. Rodríguez and Alejandro Oms had 3 hits each, with Sandy Consuegra picking up the victory.

The news wasn't so good for Rodríguez later in the week as a nasty collision at second base left him with a bruised rib and a trip to the DL. The Cuban Giants recalled P Ed Brandt to take his roster slot.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Bobby Murcer hit his first 2 homeruns of the year in a 6-4 loss. The game was Johan Santana's second blown save in a row, and wasted a solid start from Bert Blyleven. Trevor Hoffman and Santana blew a 4-1 lead in the 8th inning.

It's not clear which news is worse: Johan Santana had his third consecutive horrible outing to start the year, blowing his 3rd save, falling to 0-3, and seeing his ERA nearly reach triple digits at 94.50. In the same game, Rogers Hornsby suffered a separated shoulder and will miss several weeks. The Sea Dogs recalled veteran IF Jeff Cirillo to take Hornsby's spot.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

The Sea Lions hit 5 homeruns--2 by Sal Bando--in an 11-5 win over Los Angeles. Bando had 3 hits and 4 RBI's, Turkey Stearnes drove in 3, and Reggie Jackson had 3 hits, with Bando, Rickey Henderson, and Jimmy Bloodworth all going yard in a 6 run 6th inning.

Lefty Grove tossed the first complete game shutout of the season, twirling a masterful 3-hitter against Cleveland. Grove struck out 6, and homeruns by Stearnes and Jimmie Foxx were more than enough to lead the Sea Lions to victory.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

It was not good news for the Royal Giant as as Dave Von Ohlen, a bullpen stalwart for them last season, was diagnosed with a herniated disc and will miss about 3 months. Dutch Leonard was recalled.

In slightly better news, both Germany Smith and Trevor Hildenberger were sent to AAA on rehab assignments as they make their way back from their injuries.

Hildenberger was recalled as Terry Forster was placed on the 10 day DL.

#Homestead Grays

Chris Sabo hit a pinch-hit, walk-off 3-run homerun to lead the Grays to a wild 12-11 victory over Ottawa. Honus Wagner had 4 hits and Rick Reichardt and Andy Van Slyke 3 each in a game where the Grays pounded out 4 homeruns, with Willie Stargell, Reichardt, and Del Crandall joining Sabo.

Josh Gibson's first homerun of the season was a doozy: a grand slam to give the Grays another walk-off win over Ottawa, this one 8-5. Roberto Clemente had 3 hits and rookie Doug Drabek continued his strong start to the season with a couple 1-hit innings in relief.

#Ottawa Mounties

Old Hoss Radbourn started the Mounties' season off strong, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run over 7 innings in a 10-1 drubbing of Philadelphia. Larry Walker drove in 4 and Bob Watson had 3 hits for Ottawa.

The Mounties pounded out 25 hits, scored 11 runs, and held leads in the 8th, 9th, and 10th innings. And, lost 12-11 in 10 innings to Homestead. Walker had 4 hits and Gary Carter drove in 3 in a game where Ottawa's hurlers gave up 4 homeruns, including a walk-off shot.

Gary Peters will miss about a year with an elbow injury. Bob Brown was recalled from AAA, although for now at least it's not clear who will take Peters' spot in the rotation.

#Philadelphia Stars

The Stars may not win many games this year, but there is some talent on this team that should be fun to watch. To wit, OF Aaron Judge obliterated the record for the longest homerun in the history of the WBL, launching a pitch from Homestead's Bob Friend 558 feet for his first dinger of the year.

Ray Collins lasted 2 innings in his debut before having to be removed with back spasms. Collins will be out a couple of weeks, and the Stars have once again turned to veteran Robin Roberts, giving the 33 year old what may be his final chance at the WBL. The next day, Judge went down with a strained muscle, and the Stars decided to continue to try to reinforce their mounds corps, recalling hard throwing Brad Kilby.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Gene Tenace went deep twice as Birmingham pulled away late in a 9-2 victory over Philadelphia. Albert Belle hit his first homer of the year as he and Bob Nieman each had 3 RBI's, supporting a strong start from Alejandro Peña.

Eddie Mathews went deep twice and Greg Maddux and Jim Whitney combined on a 6-hitter as the Black Barons blanked the Stars, 7-0.

#Indianapolis ABCs

The ABC's pounded out 17 hits and 10 walks (4 to Joey Votto) in a 15-9 win over Birmingham. Joe Morgan, Denis Menke, and Oscar Charleston had 3 hits each, and Johnny Bench drove in 4.

The ABC's pitched the first shutout of the season, a combined 8-hitter as they topped Houston 2-0 despite managing only 4 hits themselves. Johnny Cueto threw 6 innings for the win, followed by Dick Tidrow, Jack Billingham, and Clay Carroll, who picked up his 2nd save of the season.

Carroll will happily return to his setup duties as Indianapolis welcomed Rob Dibble back from injury. Billingham was sent to AAA very briefly, being recalled after only a day when Ewell Blackwell was diagnosed with bone chips in his elbow, putting him on the shelf for about 7 months.

#Kansas City Monarchs

C Ted Simmons launched a 507 ft bomb in a 9-5 loss to Birmingham.

It took a great start from Smokey Joe Wood to deal Indianapolis their first loss of the season. Robinson Canó and Ozzie Smith had 2 hits each and Dale Murphy hit an inside-the-park homerun as the Monarchs beat the ABC's 3-0. Wood allowed 4 hits in over 7 innings, and Eddie Guardado and Jeff Pfeffer closed it out without allowing a baserunner.

Willie McGee had 4 hits (including 2 triples), drove in 4 and scored 4, leading the Monarchs to a 9-3 win over Indianapolis.

#Wandering House of David

Ryne Sandberg had 2 homeruns (one a grand slam) and drove in 6 as the House of David pummeled Houston, 10-1 behind a good start from Bob Rush.

Promising teenager Ad Gumbert strained his shoulder and was placed on the DL with Kyle Peterson being recalled from AAA. Peterson's stay was brief, however, as Bruce Sutter was activated from the DL the following day.

Sandberg and Sammy Sosa hit 2 homeruns apiece as the House of David destroyed the Gothams 10-1. Perhaps most importantly, Jack Taylor put in a good shift, allowing 1 run in just over 5 innings. Sandberg's start to the year is absolutely ridiculous, hitting .455 with 6 homeruns and 15 RBIs in his opening 5 games.

#Team Starts

3 teams have a single loss--Chicago, Brooklyn, and the House of David, each at 4-1--and 3 teams have a single victory on the year (Los Angeles is 1-4 while both Philadelphia and Houston are 1-6).

#Individual Starts

Nobody comes close to matching House of David 2B Ryne Sandberg, whose slash line is a ridiculous 455/458/1.273, and he leads the league in homeruns (6) and RBIs (15). Ottawa's Larry Walker (11) and Birmingham's Albert Belle (10) are the other batters in double digits in RBI.

Houston's Tony Gwynn is the sole player with a BA over .500, at .552. That's only good enough to put Gwynn 3rd in the OBP rankings, behind Portland's Harry Hooper (.577) and Indianapolis' Joey Votto (.571).

#Featured Series

Each week we'll take a look at single series, preferring 4-game sets and teams we haven't taken a close look at before.

This week, we'll be focusing on Indianapolis' visit to Brooklyn. The Royal Giants are 4-1, and the ABC's started the season 5-0 before losing their last 2 contests.

For Brooklyn, Duke Snider, John Briggs, and Roy White have all started the season with OPS' over 1.000 while offseason acquisition Pedro Guerrero is scuffling with a slash line of 143/250/214.

Bob Bescher and Joey Votto have been mashing the ball for the ABC's while Ed Charles is still trying to get some traction going, slashing 190/308/238 over the opening half-dozen games.

Both Johnny Cueto and Frank Knauss had good starts, but while Cueto blinked first (Maury Wills walked, stole a base, and scored on a John Briggs double), Knauss was hit harder, giving up a 2 run shot to Oscar Charleston in the 6th before an Ed Charles double chased him in the 7th. Burleigh Grimes relieved Knauss and gave up RBI doubles to Denis Menke and Joe Morgan.

Lefty James and Rob Dibble followed Cueto with just over 2 innings of hitless relief to seal the deal for Indianapolis. Johnny Bench had 3 hits for the ABC's.

Game Two

Pedro Guerrero launched a 3 run shot in the bottom of the 1st, but the Royal Giants couldn't hold it with RBIs from Oscar Charleston and Jake Stenzel tying the game at 4 in the top of the 5th. After a brief rain delay in the bottom of the 8th, Mike Piazza and Ray Dandridge singled runs home, allowing Brooklyn to bring in their closer, Eric Gagne, with a 6-4 lead. Gagne set the side down in order, and Brooklyn evened up the series, 1-1.

Game Three

We had a pitchers' duel in game 3 of the series as Luis Padrón and Smokey Joe Williams were each excellent, but a bit unlucky: despite giving up only 1 earned run in over 6 innings, Williams took the loss and Padrón did not get the win, despite 5 scoreless. Joe Morgan went deep for the ABC's.

Game Four

It sure looked like the ABC's would take the series: after scoring 6 in the 6th, they had surged to a 8-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 7th. But Art Griggs hit a key 2-run double in that frame, and the Royal Giants were able to rough up Indianapolis' closer, Rob Dibble, in the bottom of the ninth, scoring runs on a sacrifice fly from Jackie Robinson, an RBI single from Pedro Guerrero, and a game-winning sac fly from Duke Snider.

Robinson hit his first homerun of the year and drove in 4 on the day, and Guerrero, Mike Piazza, and Beals Becker each had 2 hits. Both Brooklyn starter Sandy Koufax and the ABC's Doc White pitched better than their scorelines represent, but the key was Dibble's implosion (2 walks and 3 hits in 1/3 of an inning) and Brooklyn's Darren Dreifort chipping in with 2 scoreless innings for the win.

Of concern for the ABC's, 2B Joe Morgan had to be lifted for a pinch runner with an apparent elbow injury, but so far no further information is available as to his status.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Dennis Martínez spun a masterful 2-hit shutout and Baltimore sent 13 people to the plate in a 9 run 6th inning as they demolished Detroit 12-0. Martínez fanned 4 without giving up a walk in the complete game effort, evening his record to 1-1. Frank Robinson and Manny Machado had 3 hits each for Baltimore.

Curt Blefary went deep twice, including a long grand slam, as the Black Sox topped the Wolverines, 14-6. Blefary scored 4 times, drove in 5, and had 3 hits total.

#Cleveland Spiders

Lance Berkman went deep twice, driving in 4, and Evan Longoria delivered a walkoff blast as Cleveland beat Portland 8-7. Johnny Bates and Tris Speaker had 3 hits each for the Spiders.

Speaker drove in 4 and Berkman 3 as the Spiders took a 10-0 lead, and then held on for dear life in a 10-8 victory over Memphis. Berkman would continue his hot start the following day, driving in the winning run in the 10th in a 3-2 win for the Spiders.

#Detroit Wolverines

Ty Cobb had 4 hits--3 of which were doubles--leading the Wolverines to a 7-6 victory over Chicago. Mike Henneman continued his perfect start to the year, earning his 4th save.

Whitey Wilshere was sent to AAA temporarily as the Wolverines needed a starter. George Bechtel was recalled for the start, with an expectation that Wilshere would be recalled shortly after the game. Bechtel did fine and got the victory, but was returned to AAA that evening.

#Memphis Red Sox

Reggie Smith went deep twice, but those were the only runs Memphis could score in a 3-2 loss to Cleveland.

#New York Black Yankees

Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle each had 2 homeruns as the Black Yankees outslugged Baltimore 14-11. Ruth drove in 6--his 2nd 6 RBI game of the young season--and Mantle and Manny Sanguillén had 3 hits each for New York.

Eric Davis went deep twice and Elliott Maddox had 3 hits as the Black Yankees beat up on San Francisco, 12-4. Waite Hoyt had a decent 8 innings, moving to 3-0 on the year and Lou Gehrig and Mantle each also had homeruns for New York.

#Chicago American Giants

Eddie Collins had 4 hits and scored 3 times as Chicago topped Detroit 9-2. David Price improved to 2-0 with 5+ scoreless innings, and Ed Walsh closed it out for the rare 3-inning save for the American Giants.

Joe Jackson had 4 hits and 3 doubles helping the American Giants to a 6-4 victory over Detroit. Frank Thomas had 3 hits and Mark Buehrle threw 6 strong innings, improving to 2-0.

Needing a starter, the American Giants moved Ted Lilly to the minors, bringing up veteran Jamie Moyer. Moyer delivered a solid 5 innings, and Thomas had 4 hits as Chicago beat Miami 8-3. Moyer's performance--and his left-handedness--will keep him in the WBL for a little while longer.

Mike Fiore had struggled quite a bit in the early going for Chicago, but given some at-bats in a blowout, he delivered with his first 2 homeruns of the season. That was about all the good news as the American Giants fell to Miami, 13-5.

#Los Angeles Angels

Elmer "Mike" Smith went to the DL with a dead arm with Ross Reynolds being recalled from AAA.

Don Buford went deep twice to give the Angels an early lead, and then they piled it on in a 12-2 thrashing of Portland. Steve Garvey drove in 4 and Bobby Grich 3 in support of a nice start from Doc Gooden, who allowed 3 hits and 1 run in 7 innings.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Back to back homeruns in the bottom of the 9th by Robin Yount and Ryan Braun rescued the Cuban Giants against the Sea Lions. Leading 10-5 at the start of the 9th, Miami saw Adonis Terry get hammered for 7 runs before Yount tied the game and Braun provided the walkoff in the bottom of the frame.

Jim Thome had 3 hits, including 2 homeruns, but it wasn't enough as the Cuban Giants fell to the American Giants, 7-5. Thome went deep twice again in a game against Chicago, and this time it was enough, as every starter had at least 1 hit and José Canseco, Yount, and Gary Sheffield also went deep in a 13-5 walkover for the Cuban Giants.

#Portland Sea Dogs

After the opening game of their series against Cleveland, Johan Santana has now pitched in 4 games, giving up 7 hits in 1.1 IP, including 5 homeruns. His record is 0-4 with 4 blown saves and an ERA of 60.75: that's right, he threw 2/3 of an inning, gave up 2 runs, and saw his ERA go down.

Ken Griffy, Jr. is still finding his footing in Portland, but hitting 2 homeruns in a 9-2 win over Cleveland is a good sign. As important for the Sea Dogs, Pascual Pérez improved his record to 2-0 with 6 shutout innings and has yet to allow a run over his 2 starts.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Jack Clark hit 2 homeruns and Rickey Henderson, Jimmie Foxx, and Mickey Cochrane also went deep as the Sea Lions defeated the Cuban Giants 10-8.

The Sea Lions scored 7 runs in the 9th to take a 12-10 lead over Miami, but lost when Rod Beck blew his first save of the year in the bottom of the frame. Turkey Stearnes had 4 hits and Jimmy Bloodworth drove in 3 in the loss.

Tim Hudson will be out about 4 months with a forearm injury that has to put the 37 year old's career in jeopardy as well. Watty Clark will complete his transition to starter by taking Hudson's spot in the rotation initially, with Bobby Seay being recalled to take Clark's spot in the bullpen.

The Sea Lions lost a 6-1 lead before scoring 5 times in the top of the 9th to top the Black Yankees 11-9. San Francisco hit 6 homeruns in the game, with Stearnes going yard twice and Reggie Jackson, Henderson, Foxx, and Cochrane each going deep as well. Beck pitched a scoreless 9th for his 5th save of the year.

#Homestead Grays

Josh Gibson launched a 538 ft. moon shot and Andrew McCutchen drove in 4 as the Grays topped Philadelphia 7-3. When Bob Friend had to leave with an apparent foot injury, the impressive rookie Doug Drabek threw 3 effective innings in relief to gain his first WBL victory.

#New York Gothams

The Gothams rode a strong start from Christy Mathewson and a long, long, long, long moonshot from Buster Posey to a 5-2 victory over the Stars. Posey's 3rd homerun of the year was measured at 538 ft. Benny Kauff hit his 4th homer of the year, and Robb Nen picked up his 4th save.

George Van Haltren will miss about a month with a back issue, with the Gothams electing to summon veteran arm Guy Hecker from AAA.

#Ottawa Mounties

With Johnny Podgajny not looking to recover any time soon, the Mounties have placed the righthander on the DL. Bill Smith was recalled from AAA.

#Philadelphia Stars

This is what the Stars were hoping for: Bullet Joe Rogan allowed 2 runs in 7 innings of work and had 3 hits including his first homerun of the year, leading the Stars to a 5-3 win over Homestead.

After 130 pitches, Hardie Henderson needed some help to finish out a 3 hit shutout of the Grays. Henderson struck out 10 and Robin Roberts got the last out in a 9-0 win, supported by 3 hits from Rico Carty and homeruns from Scott Rolen and Harmon Killebrew.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Both Steve Bedrosian and John Malarkey were injured on the mound, forcing Birmingham to turn to 1B Jake Beckley to close out the 17-7 drubbing at Houston's hands. Neither Malarkey nor Bedrosian are expected to miss more than a week or so, but the team really can't afford to carry both for that duration. Bedrosian was pushed to the DL, with Warren Spahn being recalled from AAA.

#Houston Colt 45's

Craig Biggio had 2 triples, Andrés Galarraga 3 hits, and Grant Johnson 3 RBI's as the Colt 45's blew out Birmingham, 12-2. Toad Ramsey went the distance for Houston, improving to 1-1.

The Colt 45's offense kept rolling as Tony Gwynn, Johnson, and Russ Adams had 3 hits each to lead Houston to a 17-7 win over Birmingham. Gwynn went 3-for-6, and say his BA go down, a testament to how strong his start to the year has been.

Two amazing performances from an 11-0 thrashing of the Gothams: Gwynn had 3 hits including 2 homeruns and drove in 5 and Ramsey was the first WBL hurler to notch double digit strikeouts in a game, ending with 11 whiffs in just over 7 innings of work. Ramsey had the knuckler working, but only walked 1 and Bones Ely finished the game by striking out 3 of the 5 batters he faced. HR Johnson, Biggio, Pete Hill, and Galarraga each went deep for the Colt 45's. Perhaps most surprising of all, both Gwynn and Hill hit absolute bombs, Gwynn's going 512 ft and Hill's a whopping 538.

Roger Clemens delivered a complete game, 3-hit shutout as Houston beat the Gothams, 2-0. Jeff Bagwell showed signs of emerging from his slump with 3 hits and his first homerun of the year, and Clemens walked one and whiffed 5 in moving to 2-0 on the year.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Joe Morgan will miss about a month with a sprained ankle. Tommy Helms was recalled from AAA.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Albert Pujols went deep twice, and he and Ducky Medwick drove in 4 runs each as the Monarchs topped the Grays, 10-6.

Boog Powell hit his first 2 homeruns of the year in a 12-6 victory over Birmingham. Stan Musial and Robinson Canó had 3 hits each for the Monarchs.

Smokey Joe Wood improved to 2-0 and has yet to allow an earned run as he delivered 8 innings of 2-hit ball in a 6-1 triumph over Homestead. Pujols had 4 hits and Willie McGee 3 hits and 2 RBIs for Kansas City.

#Wandering House of David

Just when things were looking up for the House of David: Pete Browning has once again hit the DL, this time for about a month with an oblique issue. 1B/OF Bob Robertson was promoted to take Browning's roster spot.

George Stone had 3 hits and Bob Rush carried a shutout into the 9th inning as the House of David beat the ABC's 6-2. Stone went deep, as did Ernie Banks, whose grand slam in the 4th was his first dinger of the year. Rush improved to 2-1.

The best record in the league falls to the Kansas City Monarchs, who have won 9 in a row and sit atop the Marvin Miller Division at 10-2. The Chicago American Giants are 9-3.

At the other end, the Portland Sea Dogs are off to a rough start at 4-10, and Birmingham and defending Whirled Champion Baltimore are barely better at 4-9. Very early days, of course.

Kansas City's Albert Pujols was the NL Player of the Week, hitting .500 (10 for 20) with 2 homers over the span. Miami's Jim Thome took home the honors in the AL, hitting .458 with 6 homeruns and 12 RBI for the week.

#Injury Watch

A few important ones over the first couple weeks (only considering injuries that will last a couple of weeks at minimum):

• Once more the House of David is without their offensive leader, as Pete Browning will miss about a month.
• San Francisco's Tim Hudson may have suffered a career-threatening shoulder injury; at a minimum he'll miss about 4 months.
• Miami's Julio Rodríguez is out for 2 more weeks, as is Portland's 2B Rogers Hornsby.
• Joe Morgan of the Indianapolis ABC's will miss about a month with a badly sprained ankle.

Some players are, of course, healing, with Baltimore's Ned Garvin--the most dominant pitcher in the league when he went down last year--likely to begin a rehabilitation assignment sometime this week. Philadelphia's promising stud Aaron Judge should return this week, as will Portland's young hurler, Walter Ball.

#Featured Series

This time we're going to go with a 3 game set between the 6-5 Ottawa Mounties visiting the 10-2 Kansas City Monarchs.

We picked this series because the Monarchs have won 9 in a row and Ottawa is a shock in the young season, carrying a team OPS of 1.001--their overall slash line as a unit is 343/406/595, figures that easily lead the league (it's not like the Monarchs are struggling at the plate, posting a 329/370/566 line as a team).

Ottawa was horrible on the mound last year, and really haven't been much better so far, with a 6.14 team ERA while Kansas City's hurlers have been, as you may guess from their record, excellent as a unit, one of only 2 teams with a sub-4.00 ERA at 3.83.

Game One

The one game that seemed least likely to be a pitching duel was, in fact, a pitching duel. Both Ottawa's Bob Moose (2 hits and 1 earned run in 6 innings) and Kansas City's José Rijo (4 hits and 2 earned runs in 6 innings) were excellent, but Ted Simmons' second 500 foot plus moon shot of the year was a 2-run walkoff blast, propelling the Monarchs to victory in the opening game of the series.

Game Two

It didn't take long for Ottawa to score off Smokey Joe Wood: Tim Raines doubled to lead off the game, stole third, and scored on a sac fly from Roberto Alomar, events made noteworthy as it was the first run off Wood all season. Ottawa would add 2 more in the inning, and then 3 more in the top of the 3rd behind a double from Larry Walker, a triple from Carlos Beltrán, and an inside the park homerun from Sam Thompson.

Randy Johnson was slated to start the game for the Mounties, but when he was unable to go, Ottawa turned to Clark Griffith. Griffith gave up a 3 run shot to Boog Powell in the bottom of the 3rd, halving Ottawa's lead. Griffith didn't pitch poorly, allowing only 5 hits in 5 innings, but the Monarchs have been masters of timely offense so far, converting those 4 hits into 5 runs.

Dupee Shaw relieved Griffith, giving up a long RBI double to Robinson Canó to tie the game.

An Adrian Beltré homerun off Bob Shawkey put Ottawa back in front, 8-6.

There was some more scoring--a solo shot from Walker in the 9th and Powell's second of the game in the bottom of the frame--but Ottawa held on for the 10-7 win, evening the series.

Walker went 4 for 4 and scored 3 times and Thompson finished with 3 RBIs for Ottawa while Powell drove in 5 on 3 hits for the Monarchs.

Game Three

This is what Ottawa hoped for from Randy Johnson: 6 fairly dominant innings with 6 strikeouts and only 2 runs allowed. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as some timely hitting from the Monarchs--a 2 run double from Willie McGee, a homerun from Ducky Medwick, and Lou Brock and Ozzie Smith scoring 3 runs from the bottom of the lineup as Kansas City took the rubber match, 4-2.

Frank Castillo was even better than Johnson, allowing only 3 hits in almost 7 innings, with Dustin Hermanson, Craig Kimbrel, and Jeff Pfeffer combining to allow a single hit in 2.1 innings of relief.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Gavvy Cravath hit his 5th and 6th homerun of the year, driving in 4 and leading Baltimore to a 9-7 victory over San Francisco. Dennis Martínez pitched well to improve to 2-1, with Buddy Groom earning his first save of the year in relief of an injured Joe Beggs, who will be unavailable for a few days with an oblique strain.

Connie Johnson finally had a good start: 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, and 11 strikeouts. It resulted in his first win of the year, a 2-1 victory over Cleveland. Johnson had been so poor so far that his ERA only dropped to 9.50 with the superlative effort.

#Cleveland Spiders

With Whit Wyatt ready for recall from his rehab assignment, the Spiders had a choice between Bob Feller and Huston Street, both of whom have been absolutely battered in the early going. They opted to waive Street and retain Feller, but will ask the 20 year old to throw from the bullpen for a while, with his roster slot taken by either Wyatt or Mel Harder.

Jake Stahl had 4 hits and Tris Speaker drove in 3 as the Spiders beat Detroit, 9-6. Stan Coveleski got the victory with 6 solid innings and Terry Adams picked up his 3rd save.

Ron Blomberg had 3 hits and drove in 5 as Cleveland came from behind to beat Detroit in 11 innings. 7-5. Yordano Ventura got the win with 2 scoreless innings of relief and Cory Gearrin, filling in for the injured Adams, got his 2nd save with a perfect inning.

Speaker hit 2 homeruns--one in the 9th as Cleveland came from behind to tie the game and one in the 10th to go ahead--as the Spiders topped Baltimore 6-5.

Evan Longoria doubled his homerun total with 2 longballs in a 5-4 win over Baltimore.

#Detroit Wolverines

Buddy Napier was put on the DL (against his protests that he would be fine in a day or three), with Ray Sadecki being promoted to the big league club for the time being.

Sadecki was magnificent, allowing 1 hit in 7 innings. He walked a man to lead off the 8th and was relieved by Chad Bradford ... who promptly, with a little help from Billy Hoeft, blew a 3-0 lead. Whatever else happens, Sadecki's performance guarantees his time with the Wolverines for a little while at least.

Chili Davis went deep twice, but the Wolverines' bullpen got hit hard, giving up a late lead in 7-5 loss in 11 innings. Ty Cobb had 3 hits and Tony Phillips led off the game with his 2nd homerun of the season.

Charlie Root fanned 13 in 7 innings, but it wasn't enough as he gave up 5 earned runs in a 6-2 loss to the Black Yankees.

#Memphis Red Sox

Despite a better showing than 2000, Eddie Cicotte was the first to go when the Red Sox needed a starter with Jameson Taillon being recalled from AAA. Taillon was magnificent, clearly earning a chance to stick around, tossing 8 innings of 2 hit ball with 8 strikeouts in his WBL debut. Skel Roach and Andrew Miller combined for a 3-0 shutout win over Miami. Wade Boggs had 3 hits for the Red Sox.

Travis Shaw hit two homeruns as the Red Sox beat Miami 5-1. Len Barker got his first victory of the year with 8 strong innings.

#New York Black Yankees

The Black Yankees hit 5 solo homeruns and Dave Righetti moved to 2-0 with 6.2 solid innings as New York downed Miami 7-5. Derek Jeter, Babe Ruth, Don Mattingly, Mike Schmidt, and Eric Davis each went deep and, perhaps as important for New York, Sparky Lyle threw a perfect 2.1 in relief, whiffing 4.

Righetti tossed 7 innings of 2-hit relief in the completion of a suspended game, leading the Black Yankees to a 9-3 win. Righetti improved to 3-0 on the year, and Davis failed to homer, ending his consecutive game streak at 6 (four of his teammates did go yard: Jeter, Mattingly, Thurman Munson, and Mickey Mantle). Lou Gehrig went deep twice (including a 500+ ft moon shot) in the "regular" game, leading New York to an 8-6 victory.

Ruth went deep twice and, perhaps more importantly for New York, Ron Guidry threw 6 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits, as the Black Yankees topped the Wolverines 6-2.

#Chicago American Giants

Ed Walsh finally had a solid outing--more than solid, as he twirled a 2 hit complete game victory over Portland. Paul Konerko had 3 hits and drove in 2 with his 2nd homerun of the year and Carlton Fisk also went deep for Chicago.

#Los Angeles Angels

George Wright will be out a week or two with a bruised knee. With Wright heading to the DL, the Angels recalled Eddie Joost, acquired in the off season for just such an eventuality.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Iván Rodríguez went deep twice, the second being a go-ahead shot in the 11th inning as Miami lost the lead, then won in extra frames against Memphis, 8-7. Pudge drove in 3 and Ryan Braun 2 in the win, and Braden Looper and Barry Latman combined for 5+ innings of 1 hit ball to end the game.

Veteran C Clyde Sukeforth confirmed that this season will be his last, with the 37 year old planning to retire once it's done.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Jeff Burroughs went deep twice in support of a solid outing from Dizzy Trout as the Sea Dogs beat Chicago, 5-2.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Reggie Jackson went deep twice but it wasn't enough as the Sea Lions fell to Baltimore, 9-7. Turkey Stearnes was injured, but it looks like he won't require a trip to the DL.

Bobby Bonds, mired in a massive slump to start the season, went deep twice, including a walkoff blast in the bottom of the 10th as the Sea Lions beat Los Angeles 5-3. Watty Clark struggled early, but settled down in his first start of the year, and Dennis Eckersley, Bobby Seay, and Rod Beck combined to allow 1 hit over 4 innings, with Beck getting the win.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Germany Smith was recalled from his injury rehab, with Maury Wills heading to AAA. For now, Smith will split time at SS with Ray Dandridge, but his power my force his name onto the lineup sheet more often.

#Homestead Grays

Willie Stargell's 4th homerun was a walkoff job in the bottom of the 11th, giving the Grays a 3-2 win over Brooklyn. Bob Friend--long gone when Pops struck--pitched excellently for Homestead, striking out 10 in just over 6 innings.

#New York Gothams

Will Clark went deep twice and drove in 6 runs as the Gothams built an early lead and held on, topping the Black Barons 12-8. Buster Posey had 3 hits and Juan Marichal evened up his record at 1-1 with a good outing.

Johnny Callison (3 hits and 6 RBIs) and Pete Runnels (4 hits) had great days, but a very poor outing from Christy Mathewson led to an 11-8 defeat at the hands of the Grays.

#Ottawa Mounties

Gary Carter continued his scorching start with 2 homeruns, giving him 8 on the year. Carter had 3 hits and 3 RBIs and Tim Raines, Larry Walker, and Roberto Alomar also went deep in a 9-5 win over Birmingham. After Old Hoss Radbourn struggled a bit, Bob Brown, Atlee Hammaker, the newly recalled Bill Smith, and BJ Ryan combined to allow only one hit in almost 5 innings of relief.

Carlos Beltrán went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the Mounties fell to Birmingham, 12-10. Dupee Shaw was pounded in his first career start, giving up 5 homeruns (4 consecutive) and while Ottawa tied the game after that, despite a strong outing from Smith, the bullpen just couldn't hold it together.

#Philadelphia Stars

The Stars recalled Aaron Judge from his rehab assignment, sending Harmon Killebrew to AAA for regular playing time. Judge's first at bat resulted in his 2nd homerun of the season, a welcome sight for Stars fans. Ted Kluszewski and Art Fletcher drove in 2 in the come from behind win over Houston as Larry Jackson, Ted Kennedy, and Bob Howry allowed only 1 hit in 3.2 innings of relief for an ineffective Steve Carlton. Kluszewski tied the game in the 8th and Fletcher drove in the winning run in the 9th, with Kennedy getting the win and Howry his 3rd save of the year.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Eddie Mathews smashed a ball 544 feet for his 5th homerun of the year, but it wasn't enough as the Black Barons fell to the Gothams, 3-2. Matthews continued to mash, sending a ball 551 feet the next day, again in a losing effort. Bob Nieman and Jim Pagliaroni went deep twice each, but disastrous outings from both John Malarkey and Warren Spahn were too much to overcome as the Black Barons fell to the Gothams, 12-8.

Curtis Granderson and Albert Belle each had 3 hits and each went deep twice and Hank Aaron added a longball of his own as the Black Barons beat the Gothams 11-6. Jim Whitney continued his brilliant start to the season with 2 perfect innings, picking up his first victory of the year.

Gene Tenace, off to a great start at the plate, will miss about 2 weeks, with JP Arencibia being recalled from AAA to backup Pagliaroni. With Arencibia able to play 1B, the Black Barons demoted the mightily struggling Jake Beckley and brought up Frank Viola from AA to make a start. Viola was absolutely torched, giving up 4 homeruns in 2 innings, and heading back to AA after the game with Bill Phyle taking his roster spot.

Granderson went deep twice in a 6-2 victory over Ottawa, the second shot giving the Black Barons the lead in the top of the 12th. Perhaps as importantly, Sam Streeter, Lefty Gomez, Juan Rincón, Larry Benton, and Bruce Chen all put in strong shifts on the mound, holding the Mounties to only 5 hits.

Birmingham hit 5 homeruns in an inning, including four in a row, and still needed some late inning heroics to pull out a 12-10 win over Ottawa. Recently recalled Arencibia was the star of the show, going 4 for 4 with 2 homeruns in his first WBL game. Arencibia's first followed consecutive homers from Mathews, Andy Pafko, and Adrián González. Pafko had 3 hits and Belle also went deep for the Black Barons.

#Houston Colt 45's

Tony Gwynn and HR Johnson had 4 hits each and combined for 7 RBIs as Houston put a beating on Philadelphia, 13-4. Bret Saberhagen was a little shaky, but evened his record at 1-1 in a game where the Colt 45's pounded out 19 hits and saw Johnson and Carlos Correa each go deep. Gwynn ended the day batting .536 on the year.

Andrés Galarraga hit his first 2 homeruns of the year, but it wasn't enough as a poor showing by Billy Wagner led to a 6-5 loss to Philadelphia.

Russ Adams was a bit of an afterthought coming out of spring training, but he's making a case for more playing time. Adams had 4 hits in a 12-6 victory over the House of David. Johnson and Galarraga each drove in 3 in the win, with Roger Clemens improving to 3-0 with a decent outing.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Both Lefty James and Dick Tidrow were forced out of the game via injury in an 8-4 win over Kansas City. James was immediately placed on the DL, anticipated to miss about 2 weeks while Tidrow's injury was less clear. Rob Murphy was recalled to take James' spot in the pen.

Ed Charles broke out of a slump in a big way with 4 hits and his first homerun of the season, but the real star of the game was Luis Padrón, who drove in 4 and got the win with 6 solid innings on the mound. Johnny Bench drove in 3 and Padrón, Bench, Denis Menke, and Oscar Charleston all joined Charles in going yard in the 13-5 win over the Monarchs.

After the game, the ABC's put Tidrow, who is expected to be out for just over a month, on the DL. Gorham Leverett was recalled from AAA to take Tidrow's place.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Albert Pujols hit 2 solo shots, but it couldn't overcome a poor start from Bob Gibson--who couldn't make it out of the first inning--in a 13-5 loss to Indianapolis.

Smokey Joe Wood is the best pitcher in the WBL right now. He improved to 3-0 with a 2 hit shutout of the ABC's. Dale Murphy went deep twice for the Monarchs in the game.

With 3 weeks in the books, teams will have their first real overhaul this week, so expect some changes to lineups, rotations, etc. to be covered in the TWIWBL's, making them a little longer than usual.

#NO NO and Near No No

José Rijo of the Kansas City Monarchs tossed the very first no-hitter in WBL history, blanking the House of David 7-0. Rijo didn't walk a batter and struck out 12 in the 114 pitch masterpiece, supported by a 15 hit attack (including 9 doubles). Ozzie Smith had 4 hits, Albert Pujols drove in 2, and Boog Powell scored twice to lead the offense, but it was really all about Rijo, who improved to 2-1 on the year and dropped his ERA by roughly 2.5 points. It still stands a shade over 5 at 5.08, making the historic performance even more surprising.

Christy Mathewson and John Montgomery Ward combined for one of the best pitched games in WBL history as the Matty's New York Gothams bested the Philadelphia Stars 1-0 in 10 innings. Mathewson threw over 7 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits and was--by far--the inferior hurler, as Ward allowed a single hit over 9 innings while striking out 12. Buster Posey took Ward's relief--Bob Howry--deep to lead off the 10th for the only score of the day.

Miami's Gary Sheffield was the AL Player of the Week, hitting .500 with 2 homeruns. In the NL, Ottawa's Larry Walker took the award, hitting .444 with 4 homers and 6 RBIs.

#Team Performance

Three teams have exploded out of the gate: the Chicago American Giants and Kansas City lead the WBL in winning percentage, with both teams at .722 (13-5). The New York Black Yankees are at .700, starting the season at 14-6.

At the other end, the Detroit Wolverines have the worst record in the league at 6-14 (.300) while the Baltimore Black Sox and the Portland Sea Dogs are barely better at 6-13 (.316).

For those of you who remember Year I, the theme here is parity--or inconsistency, depending on your streetcorner. Baltimore are the defending champions, Detroit and Portland both made the playoffs, Kansas City was among the worst teams in the league last season, and the Black Yankees were a major disappointment, missing the postseason entirely.

We're only 20 games in, so take it all with a grain of salt, but it's fun to see.

There are some surprises here for sure: Correa and Johnson in Houston finally coming good, same with San Francisco's Lundy. But it still looks like it's Babe Ruth's league, assuming Sandberg's performance falls back to mere excellence.

Pitchers

Still not enough to really get into stats: 13 starters have 3 wins, nobody has over 30 IP, etc. But some things to note:

• It seems like there is always a single starting pitcher head and shoulders above the rest at any given time in the WBL. Right now, it's Portland's Smokey Joe Wood, who is 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA.
• Houston's Toad Ramsey is the ERA leader at an impressive 1.57, just ahead of Wood. Chicago's Mark Buehrle is the only other starter with an ERA beneath 2.00 at 1.86.

Relievers have yet to really separate as well, as 5 of them have 5 saves on the season so far.

#Featured Series

This time we'll focus on a four game set as the Los Angeles Angels visit Chicago to take on the American Giants. The Angels come into the game at 10-9 which is essentially "as expected," while Chicago has roared out of the gate, sitting 1t 15-6.

Game One

It was a rough start for David Price, as he gave up 2 runs in the top of the first on an RBI single by Mike Trout and a sacrifice fly from Doug Rader. But Price settled right down, and was virtually perfect the rest of the way before being relieved by Hoyt Wilhelm in the 7th. Tom Seaver was as good, leaving in the 6th inning having given up only 1 run.

The American Giants would score again in the 7th, but that would be it until the bottom of the 10th. Mike Fiore led off being hit by a pitch from Julio Teheran, Joe Jackson doubled him to 3rd and, after Ross Reynolds took over on the mound and issued an intentional walk to Frank Thomas, Dick Allen lifted a ball deep to center, where it was caught by Don Buford, but he had no chance to catch Fiore before he crossed the plate with the winning run.

Game Two

The story for most of the game was Los Angeles' Doc Gooden, who was spectacular through 8 innings, allowing only 3 hits while fanning 10. The only blemish on Gooden's day was a solo shot to Duffy Lewis, which tied the game at 1 in the 8th.

We were headed to extra innings once again, but there was less drama this time as the Angels used 3 homeruns in the top of the 10th (Doug Rader, Bobby Grich, and AJ Pierzynski) to ease to the 5-1 win.

Game Three

Mark Buehrle just keeps rolling along, allowing 5 hits and 1 run over 9 innings and improving to 5-0 on the year. But the Angels' pitchers were almost as good, and the only tallies in the game came from solo shots from Chicago's Dave Nilsson and the Angels' Mike Trout, who seems to be waking from an early season slumber. The game came down to a walkoff single from Joe Jackson in the bottom of the 9th. Jackson, Eddie Collins, and Paul Konerko had 2 hits each for Chicago.

Game Four

Another great pair of efforts from the starting pitchers, as Los Angeles' Brett Anderson and Chicago's Ben Sheets each went 7 innings allowing only a single hit each, and no earned runs (errors had allowed runs to score for each team). A key hit from rookie Ichiro Suzuki drove in 2, providing the margin the Angels needed for a 4-1 victory, splitting the series 2 games apiece. Neither team had an extra base hit, and they combined for only 6 singles (4 for Los Angeles and 2 for the American Giants).

#Baltimore Black Sox

Ned Garvin should start a rehab assignment some time this week, which is great news for a struggling Baltimore staff. The team won't make any changes for now, but both Johnny Sain and the surprising John Tudor are pushing to replace Connie Johnson and/or Jim Palmer in the rotation. Garvin did indeed begin a stint at AAA, with many in the organization paying very close attention.

Frank Robinson might be emerging from his early season doldrums, going 3 for 4 with 2 homeruns in a 4-1 victory over Los Angeles. Dennis Martínez continued his strong start, improving to 3-1 with 7 strong innings, allowing 6 hits and a single run for the Black Sox, with Joe Beggs picking up his 2nd save of the year.

Baby Doll Jacobsen hit the DL with a sprained knee, with Cal Ripken, Jr. being recalled.

Gavvy Cravath had 2 hits, including a walkoff grand slam as the Black Sox came back to win 8-6 over the Black Yankees.

#Cleveland Spiders

Yordano Ventura was pressed into emergency duty as a starter and performed magnificently, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings, but he was not involved in the decision as the Spiders came from behind for a 3-2 win over Miami. Lance Berkman went deep twice for Cleveland.

#Detroit Wolverines

The Wolverines put on the largest beatdown of the WBL season so far, a 23 to 5 thrashing of Portland. Charlie Gehringer drove in 7 and Bob Bailey 4 while Bailey, Billy Nash, and Ed Bailey each scored 4 times. Bob Bailey and Juan Beníquez each had 3 hits for Detroit. Ed Bailey walked 4 times and Gehringer, Bob Bailey, and Hank Greenberg each went deep. Gene Conley wasn't great, but he didn't have to be as he improved to 1-2 with an 8 inning effort.

Ty Cobb went deep twice as the Wolverines pulverized Memphis, 15-3. Gehringer and Chili Davis had 3 hits each, with Cobb and Davis driving in 3 runs as part of a 16 hit attack. Charlie Root threw a strong 8 innings, earning his first win of the year.

Ernie Lombardi and Greenberg had 3 hits each (with Greenberg smacking 3 doubles), and Bob Bailey and Al Kaline had 3 RBI's each as Detroit trounced the Red Sox, 13-6.

#Memphis Red Sox

The Red Sox clearly need to find more playing time for Travis Shaw and David Ortiz, who combined to go 5 for 8 with 7 RBIs and 3 homeruns (2 for Shaw) in a 10-7 win over the Black Yankees. Memphis roared out to a 10-1 lead then had to survive a bad outing from Andrew Miller for the win, which went to David Bush who threw 4 plus hitless innings in relief of an injured Shane Bieber.

#New York Black Yankees

After a rough start, Thurman Munson is starting to come around. The Black Yankee backstop had 3 hits, including 2 homeruns, and drove in 5 as New York topped Memphis, 9-2. Andy Pettitte had a solid outing, improving to 2-1.

Lou Gehrig went deep twice, leading the Black Yankees to a 4-3 win over Baltimore. Jack Scott improved to 2-2 with a solid outing and Goose Gossage picked up his 2nd save of the season.

#Chicago American Giants

The mystery of Mike Fiore continues. Fiore led the WBL in walks last year, and his on base/power combination made him a useful part for Chicago. But the American Giants looked poised to move on, until Duffy Lewis was injured, opening up playing time for Fiore ... who is posting a .963 OPS despite a batting average in the .220's.

Now that Lewis has started a rehab assignment, Chicago will need to figure out what to do with an overly crowded OF.

Mark Buehrle threw 8 scoreless innings and Paul Konerko homered twice as the American Giants trounced the Sea Dogs, 12-0. Buehrle became the league's first 4 game winner, lowering his ERA to 1.32 in the process while Konerko had 3 hits and drove in 5.

Sometimes it's not the stars: Kevin Mitchell and Vernon Wells delivered consecutive singles in the bottom of the 9th, with Mitchell's tying the game and Wells' giving Chicago a walkoff 4-3 victory over San Francisco.

It wasn't enough to save Mitchell's job, however: with Lewis getting a few AB's in at AAA, it was time to recall him to the big league club, with Mitchell heading the other way. Lewis' return is complicated: Fiore and Konerko, the most likely players to lose playing time to Lewis, are performing fantastically.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Ryan Braun went deep twice leading the Cuban Giants to a 9-1 win over Cleveland. José Méndez allowed 1 run in 6 innings, improving to 2-0. Iván Rodríguez and Minnie Miñoso both went deep, perhaps signaling their emergence from offensive slumps to start the season.

Horrible news for the Cuban Giants, as staff ace Camilo Pascual will miss most if not all of the rest of the year with a knee injury. Miami recalled Kenshin Kawakami to join their bullpen, but declined to name a 5th starter for their rotation to take Pascual's place.

José Canseco was the first person this season to hit 3 homeruns in a game, but it wasn't enough as the Cuban Giants fell to Cleveland, 9-6.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Needing a starter, the Sea Dogs moved struggling Frank Williams to AAA, recalling Mike Cuellar. Cuellar pitched well enough, but took the defeat in a 6-2 loss to Detroit.

Walter Johnson, Wade Miller, and Trevor Hoffman combined on a 2 hit shutout in a 9-0 drubbing of Cleveland. Johnson was sailing along for 5 innings, and it's not quite clear why he didn't come out for the 6th. By that time, it was 6-0 in favor of Portland, who got 4 RBIs from Jim Fregosi and 3 hits from Bobby Murcer.

Jeff Burroughs will miss about 2 weeks with a sprained elbow, with Kiki Cuyler called up from AAA.

Gil Hodges went deep twice and drove in 3 and, perhaps more importantly for Portland, Johan Santana got his first save of the year in relief of a solid outing from Bert Blyleven, who picked up his first victory in a 6-3 win over Cleveland.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Tommy Bridges replaces Nick Altrock in the Sea Lions' rotation.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Terry Forster began a rehab assignment, with an eye towards returning to the active roster later this week.

Ray Dandridge's offensive struggles have accelerated Germany Smith's return to full time status, with Smith taking over at SS. Dandridge will still see a lot of playing time around the diamond, but he--along with Frank Isbell--are in danger of (not) hitting themselves right out of the league.

Juan Mateo will miss about 4 months of action, clearing space for Forster's return.

#Homestead Grays

The Grays recalled Corey Kluber from his rehab assignment, sending the struggling Tim Lincecum to AAA.

#New York Gothams

Willie Mays had 4 hits and 3 RBIs and Pinky Higgins went deep twice as the Gothams beat the Mounties, 8-2. Don Sutton improved to 3-1 with 10 whiffs in 7 plus innings of work for New York.

Mays and Benny Kauff each went deep twice as the Gothams poured it on late for an 8-3 win over Philadelphia. Gaylord Perry improved to 2-3 with 7 solid innings of work.

#Ottawa Mounties

With Ryan Dempster's struggles, the return of closer Tom Henke after a year away can't come soon enough. Henke should start a rehab assignment later this week, joining Johnny Podgajny in trying to make their way back to the active roster.

#Philadelphia Stars

With Dave Stieb seemingly massively overmatched, the Stars sent him to AAA, recalling Ray Collins from a rehab assignment. Collins will slot into the bullpen for a while, with Larry Jackson taking Stieb's spot in the rotation.

Bullet Joe Rogan has been the best hitter for the Stars so far this season, and while he'll move around a lot, it's expected that he'll be out there virtually every day from here on out.

Hardie Henderson continues his great start, combining with Brad Kilby, Tim Belcher, and Ted Kennedy on a 4 hit shutout in a 5-0 win over the House of David. Henderson improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.64 on the day.
