American League Player of the Week
Fans of the Philadelphia Athletics already knew that shortstop Honus Wagner is a master with the bat, so it was not a surprise to learn that Wagner was named American League Player of the Week. In picking up the award, he batted .400 (12 for 30) with 1 Triple, 1 Homerun, 6 Runs, 8 RBIs, and 2 Stolen Bases to finish with a slash line of .400/.400/.567 which was good for a 180 OPS+ and 0.4 WAR. This was his first PofW honor.

Detroit Makes Deal With Brooklyn
In what appears to be a playoff-push effort by the Detroit Tigers, they sent 3rd baseman Andy Oyler to the Brooklyn Superbas in exchange for pitcher Jack Taylor and 3rd baseman Frank Martin. What is interesting about this trade is that it reunites Frank Martin with the Tigers, as he was dealt in the offseason along with Hobe Ferris in return for Stan Yerkes and Ed Abbaticchio. Looking at player ratings, Oyler and Martin is pretty much a wash of low-impact 3rd basemen. The potential gem here is Detroit getting Jack Taylor as they make a strong run at the Boston Americans.
Player stats at the time of trade show Oyler with a Double-A slash of .324/.437/.606 (216 OPS+ and 1.6 WAR) and a Triple-A slash of .246/.326/.332 (99 OPS+ and 0.9 WAR), while Martin has MLB slash of .259/.305/.297 (78 OPS+ and 0.4 WAR) and Taylor has MLB record of 1-0 with 2 saves, 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings of 11 games.

Game 103: Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Americans
It was a shaky start to the game, but the Boston Americans (70-33) buckled down and cruised to a 9 to 4 win over the Baltimore Orioles (58-45).
After the rough 1st inning, Noodles Hahn (18-8) settled in to pick up his league-leading 18th win of the season, limiting the opposition to 4 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks on 132 pitches to finish with a Game Score of 58. Baltimore starter Wiley Piatt (15-10) lasted only 1 2/3 innings, serving up 8 earned runs on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of -2. Ted Lewis covered the final 6 1/3 innings in relief, allowing 1 earned run on 8 hits and 1 walk. The Boston hitting-attack was locked in, as they pounded out 17 hits on the day. They were led by Frank Chance (3 for 5, 3 Runs, 1 Stolen Base), Bill Lange (4 for 5, 2 RBIs), Kid Elberfeld (3 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and John Farrell (3 for 4, 1 Run). The Orioles were benefited by Jimmy Bannon (1 for 4, Homerun, 1 Run, 3 RBIs) and Harry Davis (2 for 4). Player of the Game: Frank Chance (Season: #4 / Career: #5)

Game 104: Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Americans
While the series ended with a 3-game sweep, the outcome of this game was in doubt until a 7th inning blast by Jesse Hoffmeister put Boston (71-33) up for good with a 7 to 6 win over the Orioles (58-46).
Picking up the win for the home team was Cy Young (18-6) who while not at his best, nonetheless limited the opposition to 6 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 4 walks to finish with a Game Score of 54. Ed Murphy (10-13) took the loss, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) for a Game Score of 32. Jake Boyd pitched 1/3 of an inning before handing the ball over to Christy Mathewson for the final inning. Hitting for the Americans was led by Bill Lange (2 for 5, 2 RBIs, 2 Stolen Bases), Frank Chance (2 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Cy Young (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), and Jesse Hoffmeister (1 for 1, Homerun, 1 Run, 3 RBIs). Baltimore's offense was powered by Jimmy Collins (2 for 5, Homerun, 1 Run, 2 RBIs) and Jesse Burkett (1 for 4, Homerun, 1 Run, 2 RBIs). Player of the Game: Jesse Hoffmeister (Season: #2 / Career: #3)

Game Performance Spotlight: Rube Waddell & Bill Carrick
From several days ago, but a game performance highlight in which Rube Waddell tossed 14 2/3 innings in a 1 to 0 loss in which Rube struck out 15 batters and finished with a Game Score of 107. Not to be overlooked, Bill Carrick tossed 15 innings of shutout ball to finish with a Game Score of 102. What a dominant pitching performance by both players!

Game 105: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans
It took some 8th inning drama, but with the 4 to 3 comeback win over the Chicago White Sox (44-61), the Boston Americans (72-33) now have a 4-game win streak going. Jesse Tannehill (17-10) picked up the win, tossing 119 pitches in which he allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walk for a Game Score of 64. Bill Carrick (10-16) was tagged with the loss after giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score of 56.
Limited hitting performance for the home team, but Jesse Tannehill (1 for 3, Triple, 1 Run) and Chick Stahl (1 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) made solid contributions. The visitors received solid hitting from George Treadway (2 for 2, Double, 2 RBIs, 1 Stolen Base) and John Anderson (2 for 4, Double, Triple, 2 Runs). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #15 / Career: #36)

Game 106: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans
A hitting-attack that was firing on all cylinders today, as the Boston Americans (73-33) trounced the Chicago White Sox (44-62) by a score of 18 to 5.
Sam Leever (18-6) was the beneficiary of the offense, picking up the win after allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits and 1 walk to finish with a Game Score of 58. Brickyard Kennedy (12-15) lasted just 4 2/3 innings before he left the game after allowing 9 runs (8 earned) on 13 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score of 3. Bock Baker pitched 2/3 innings of relief but was yanked after giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits, 3 walks, and 1 hit batsman. Bob Dresser covered the final 2 2/3 innings by allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman. A rough pitching day for the White Sox! With 20 hits (3 for extra bases), 5 walks, and 2 hit batsmen, you know there are multiple offensive performances worth mentioning. In fact, all 9 starters had a least 1 base hit and got on base at least 2 times today. Bill Lange (4 for 5, Double, 3 Runs, 3 RBIs, 1 Walk), Chick Stahl (3 for 6, 4 RBIs), Dave Brain (3 for 5, Double, 3 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), Jiggs Donahue (2 for 5, 3 Runs, 2 RBIs, 1 Stolen Base), and Kid Elberfeld (1 for 3, 3 Runs, 1 RBI, 2 Walks) played outstanding. George Treadway (3 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI) and Hughie Jennings (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Bill Lange (Season: #1 / Career: #2)

Game 107: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans
Another sweep runs the win streak to 6 games, as the Boston Americans (74-33) prevailed over the Chicago White Sox (44-63) by a 5 to 2 score. The Americans now have a 13 game lead over the 2nd place Detroit Tigers in the American League standings.
Noodles Hahn (19-8) was the winning pitcher, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits to finish with a Game Score of 67. Bill Phillips (0-7) took the loss after giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and 5 walks for a Game Score of 51. To note, Phillips is having a rather interesting year as he was not only named to the All-Star game, he was named PofG despite not having yet recorded a win this season. This was a much slower day in regards to the hitting-attack, so noteworthy performances are rather limited. With that said, John Farrell (1 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 2 RBIs) and Chick Stahl (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Walk, 2 Stolen Bases) played well. For Chicago, John Anderson (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI) and Henry Krug (1 for 3, Double, 1 Run) made solid contributions. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #18 / Career: #43)

St. Louis Makes Deal with Philadelphia
With just 4 days left before the trading deadline, teams are actively wheeling and dealing. In the latest move, the St. Louis Cardinals reached agreement to send catcher Bill Bergen and pitcher Buck Hooker to the Philadelphia Athletics in exchange for pitcher Doc McJames.
Not sure what the Cardinals see in McJames (MLB: 1-2 record with 6.25 ERA and -0.3 WAR), as I think the Athletics are getting a steal here with Bergen (Double-A slash of .282/.340/.398 -- 124 OPS+ 4.1 WAR) and Hooker (MLB: 13-11 record with 2.66 ERA and 2.3 WAR). Moreover, Hooker has allowed just 1 earned run in his last 26 2/3 innings pitched and was named the National League Player of the Week on the day he was traded.

American League Player of the Week
The recent Boston Americans win streak is due, in large part, to the outstanding hitting of outfielder Bill Lange. In picking up American League Player of the Week honors, Lange went 11 for 22 (.500 batting average) with 1 Double, 5 Runs, 7 RBIs, 2 Walks, and 4 Stolen Bases to finish with a slash line of .500/.542/.545; good for a 219 OPS+ and 0.5 WAR on the week. This is Lange's first PofW award.

National League Player of the Week
What a whirlwind week for former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Buck Hooker. On the same day his team shipped him off to Philadelphia, Hooker was named the National League Player of the Week for his strong pitching outings. On the week, Hooker went 2-0 by tossing 18 scoreless innings good for 0.4 WAR.

Game 108: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics
Falling behind early and playing sloppy defense is never a good mix for a win, but the Boston Americans (75-33) overcame these challenges to top the Philadelphia Athletics (47-61) by a score of 6 to 5. Cy Young (19-6) picked up the win while allowing 5 runs (0 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks to finish with a Game Score of 68. Lave Winham (3-4) took the loss after giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits, 4 walks, and 2 wild pitches in 7 innings of play; Game Score of 39. Bill Reidy covered the final 2 innings with a scoreless relief appearance.
Boston's offense was led by Chick Stahl (2 for 3, Triple, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk), Bill Lange (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 Walk), Dave Brain (1 for 4, Double, 2 RBIs), and Frank Chance (0 for 3, 2 Runs, 2 Walks). The Athletics kept the game close thanks to Honus Wagner (1 for 2, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 2 Walks, 2 Stolen Bases) and Larry McLean (1 for 3, 2 Runs, 1 Stolen Base). Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #13 / Career: #30)

White Sox Eliminated From Playoff Race
While not a surprise, it became official with a 4 to 1 loss to Cleveland that the Chicago White Sox were mathematically eliminated from the American League playoff race. Better luck next year...

Game 109: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics
Make that 8 games in a row, as the Boston Americans (76-33) came back to top the Philadelphia Athletics (47-62) by a 7 to 6 score. Pitcher Jesse Tannehill (18-10) earned the victory, giving up 6 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks while throwing 132 pitches; Game Score of 55. Earl Moore (13-14) was tagged with the loss after serving up 7 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 2 hit batsmen; Game Score of 49.
Limited hitting by Boston but still a few noteworthy performances that is worth noting including Bill Lange (2 for 3, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, 1 RBI), Jesse Tannehill (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), and Fred Clarke (1 for 4, Homerun, 1 Run, 2 RBIs). The Athletics were aided by Socks Seybold (2 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Honus Wagner (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 Walk, 1 Stolen Base), and Earl Moore (2 for 4, 2 RBIs). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #16 / Career: #37)

Athletics Deal Reidy to Chicago
A noteworthy trade made by the Philadelphia Athletics, as they send Bill Reidy (the reigning American League Fireman of the Year) to the Chicago Orphans for Double-A catcher Jack Robinson. Unsure why Philadelphia was willing to ship off Reidy who is having another solid year (MLB: 0-2 with 2 saves, 2.16 ERA in 16 2/3 innings) in relief for a minor league catcher (Double-A slash .223/.290/.311; 83 OPS+) that is several years away from making in to MLB.

Boston Finds Partners for Minor League Trades
With the 1902 trade deadline fast approaching, the Boston Americans found willing trading partners for the exchange of minor league players. While both trades bring in players who will not see any playing time at the MLB level, they do bring in younger talent that might eventually contribute years from now.
The first trade saw the Americans shipping off 2nd baseman John O'Connell (Double A: .223/.299/.314 1.0 WAR) to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielder Jack Hayden (.316/.316/.316 0.3 WAR). I have had Hayden on my radar for a little while now, but held off after seeing a recent ratings dip. While he may not rebound from the hit, he does bring a little youth and with the offset of money, is a low-risk proposition that will start at Double-A. The second trade is more sentimental in nature, though admittedly it does again bring youth at no additional cost. In a previous historical franchise I had with OOTP 16(?), I became a big fan of pitcher Jake Volz. He was never great (or even good for that matter), but there was something I liked about having him on the team. In making the trade, the Americans sent pitcher Dick Cogan (Double-A: 17-5 with 2.01 ERA and 5.4 WAR) and two draft picks (9th and 10th rounds) to the Beaneaters in exchange for Jake Volz (5-6 with 3.60 ERA 5 Saves -0.3 WAR) and 1st baseman Bert Conn (Double-A: .267/.334/.412 127 OPS+ 1.5 WAR). Both players will be assigned to the Double-A team.
